Lada and Dacia will be united: one platform for all


Perhaps one of the most long-awaited new products from AvtoVAZ is the second generation Lada Granta. From the moment it entered the market, this model became the most popular car in Russia, maintaining the title for several years. However, by now the sedan is morally and technically outdated. In 2022, AvtoVAZ restyled the Granta, which brought innovations to the design of the body and interior. Some changes were made to the engines, as well as to the list of on-board equipment. However, all this can be called, rather, cosmetic repairs than a full-fledged update of the car.

Our designers have prepared the first renderings of the new Lada Granta 2021-2022, showing what the Russian sedan could become after the debut generation change in its history. And judging by the published images, the car will undergo major changes this time. Moreover, the sedan can really enter the Russian market.

Externally, the concept of the new Granta is very similar to the current version of Vesta. The choice of this design is not accidental. Firstly, Vesta received a lot of positive reviews precisely because of its appearance. Secondly, by adopting the body design from the “older” model, AvtoVAZ will thus be able to save on both the development and modernization of production for the new generation of Granta: the Volzhsky Automobile Plant will not have to spend a lot of money on changing stamping presses.

At the same time, after changing generations, the Russian sedan may become noticeably more expensive. The fact is that, according to previously published information, the second generation Lada Granta should become one of the first AvtoVAZ models to be built on the French-Japanese CMF-B-LS platform. This could lead to the sedan losing its usual engines. Although it is possible that in order to keep the price of the model at an acceptable level, AvtoVAZ will leave it with the same technical part, which will include a 1.6-liter “aspirated” engine. But its design will most likely be changed.

There is a possibility that for the new Lada Granta 2021-2022 they will prepare new 1-liter turbocharged engines, which will be provided by Renault. This option is completely justified, as it will help maintain car prices, increase engine power and improve its fuel efficiency.

Differences

Such a car was recently launched on the Turkish market. We will have it on the same assembly line with the new Lada Granta in 2023. If the new Grant will actually copy the entire exterior of the Dacia, then the same car under the Logan brand will receive a more interesting design. In addition, such a car should receive its own original interior in the style of modern European Renault models.

In order to differentiate Grant and Logan into different market niches, they will have different ranges of power units and transmissions. Plus, for Logan in expensive versions, those options will be available that are not offered for Grants at any price. Externally, the new Renault Logan will differ from the Lada Granta with a different design of the front and rear parts. The car will have its own hood, headlights, grille, bumper, front fenders, trunk lid, taillights and rear bumper.

The front of the model is made in the corporate style of the Renault brand. The headlights are LED, and just like on other models they will get big fangs. The taillights have additional sections located on the trunk lid.

When viewed from the side, the cars look almost identical. They have identical rear fenders, front and rear doors. As a result, the new Lada Granta and Renault Logan 3rd generation differ in appearance just as much as the current Volkswagen Polo and Skoda Rapid for our market.

The basis of the new product

The prototype of this car will be the third generation Renault Logan. The Lada Granta will be built on the basis of the CMF-B/LS, but the Russian version will be characterized by a simplified design. The Renault-Nissan concern plans to unify Lada and Dacia cars with each other to reduce production costs.

By 2025, all these models will be produced on a single platform. AvtoVAZ's own developments will not be taken into account. The new car will be almost identical to the new generation Renault model.


On the other hand, some simplifications will be made to the design. Thanks to this approach, the car will be more affordable on the Russian market.

Interior

The difference between the two cars will be felt more strongly in the cabin. Granta will actually borrow its interior from Dacia. The only difference will be that Grant will receive a branded VAZ steering wheel, as well as a modified instrument panel with orange scales.

In turn, the 3rd generation Renault Logan for our market, in order to justify its high price, can receive a more modern interior, made in the style of modern European Renault models. Such a car will receive a large vertical display of the multimedia system. In expensive trim levels, a digital instrument panel is installed.

The base Renault Logan, unlike the Lada Granta, will have 4, not 2, airbags. But at maximum speed there will be 6 of them here and there.

But Logan has in expensive trim levels the following active safety features that are not available for Grants:

  • automatic braking system;
  • active cruise control;
  • lane keeping system.

For Logan, an eco-leather interior is offered. In general, the interior of the new Logan looks more attractive than that of the new Lada Granta. But the same available materials are used in the finishing. The cars will remain identical in some details. In particular, the front and rear seats will be common to both models. They differ only in materials and upholstery design.

Technical characteristics and filling


The current generation salon is in the Drive Active configuration.
The future Lada Granta 2023 model year will become a more practical, safe and convenient car, since it will receive all the technologies from Renault Logan. The new platform will rid the car of many “childhood diseases” that literally originate from the 80s.

The car will have a subframe, which will immediately improve the interior comfort and handling of the vehicle. The range will include new engines that meet higher environmental standards. The brake mechanisms will be replaced, to which not all even the most experienced drivers can adapt to the current version of the Granta.

As for the technical part of the current Lada Granta, the manufacturer itself has long recognized the futility of its further modernization. But the market is driven by demand, so such cars will remain in the price list of the “new” LADA brand, which will soon become Russian-Romanian-French.

Technical part

To a large extent, the 2 models will be differentiated into different market niches through the use of different engines and gearboxes. Lada Granta is mostly equipped with VAZ engines.

Among them:

  • proven 16-valve 1.6 liter for 106 liters. With.;
  • an updated 8-valve engine of the same volume, which produces 90 horsepower and is installed on the restyled Lada Largus. It is also expected to appear soon on the current Grant;
  • 1.8 liters per 122 liters. pp., which will be installed exclusively on the Cross version;
  • Nissan 1.6 liter engine with 114 horsepower as a top-end one.

The latter engine is available exclusively with the Jatko CVT. While the 1.6 and 1.8 engines are equipped with a VAZ 5-speed manual transmission. In turn, the new Renault Logan will have a 1.6 Nissan engine as a base engine, which significantly increases the initial cost of the car. Moreover, on Logan it is available not only with a CVT, but also with a Renault 5-speed manual.

For an additional fee, the new Renault Logan will be offered a 1.33-liter turbocharged engine with a capacity of 150 hp. With. Currently it is installed on Renault Arcana, Duster and Captur. This engine is combined exclusively with the Jatko variator, and a car equipped with it can accelerate to hundreds in approximately 9.5 seconds.

This Logan will be a direct competitor to the turbocharged Volkswagen Polo and Skoda Rapid. The new Logan is already equipped with rear disc brakes as standard. While for the Granta they are offered only in versions with a 1.6 engine and a CVT.

Logan also has an electronic handbrake in its database, which is offered for Grants only in maximum versions. According to currently available information, the new Renault Logan will be offered exclusively as a sedan. While the cheaper Granta will be available as a sedan, Cross hatchback, as well as a station wagon in regular and cross versions.

Design

At the presentation, a car in Extreme performance was shown. The latter will be distinguished by a protective plastic body kit around the perimeter of the body. In Russia, such a design will quite logically receive the name Cross. With all this, the car, as before, will be available exclusively in front-wheel drive, at least in the European market.

It is worth expecting that the Russian Lada Granta may also receive all-wheel drive versions, which are very popular in our country. On the front, the new model is completely unified with Logan and Sandero. But then we see the differences.

In fact, the model is a cross between a regular station wagon and a minivan. The Jogger features a raised roofline, which provides more headroom for passengers. The back of the model is completely original. Compared to the sedan and hatchback, the Jogger also received larger rear doors. In addition, the station wagon received completely original vertical taillights. They are made completely LED. The basic headlights will only have LED low beams. Full LED optics are available to the car only at an additional cost.

It will also be possible to order optional roof rails for the car. Their carrying capacity is 80 kilograms. The new Dacia Jogger and Lada Granta SW based on it will be available in both 5-seater and 7-seater versions. At the same time, the salon has a cascade layout. The second row of seats is set 55 millimeters higher than the first, and the optional rear row is 25 millimeters higher than the second. The developers themselves compare the Jogger to a Swiss folding knife, because as many as 64 seat configurations are available. The 7-seater versions of the car will have folding rear windows.

Optionally, folding tables can be installed in the backs of the rear seats. The trunk also offers a high level of practicality. There are 2 bag hooks and a 12-volt outlet. The 5-seater version of the car includes 708 liters of usable space. The length of its luggage compartment is 1150 millimeters. If you fold the second row of seats, the trunk volume reaches 1819 liters. In the 3-row version, the car has a luggage compartment of 160 liters, and if you fold the third row seats, the volume increases to 565 liters. The volume of glove compartments and niches for small items scattered throughout the cabin is 24 liters.

Price

As for prices, if for Grant they will range from 0.7 to 1.1 million rubles, depending on the type of body and equipment, then prices for the new Logan will range from 0.95 to 1.5 million rubles. At the moment, these prices clearly look high. However, they include inflation for the next 3 years.

Will the engines remain Russian?

This is also an interesting question. On the one hand, the policy of cost reduction and general unification implies that the Renault group will get rid of “extra” engines and gearboxes. It is not difficult to assume that Russian age-old engines and a “howling” gearbox are begging for the role of “pensioners”. On the other hand, they provide lower cost of cars. And again, according to some reports, the same New Niva will receive the “native” 1.8 engine.

You will say that on current Dacia models priority is given to modern, that is, technologically advanced small-displacement turbo engines, which are unlikely to be particularly in demand in our region. Yes, but in some markets the same 1.6-liter “AVeste” remains available, and as for automatic transmissions, the “automatic” and Jatco CVT are pure imports.

In general, we can assume that in the distant future priority will still be given to imported engines and gearboxes, even if they are localized in Russia. But at least in the coming years, VAZ units will not disappear. But the same cannot be said about the “original” models themselves.

Localization can be key

It is clear that the French have their own vision for the development of the group, their own plans for the measures taken. Close one or two factories, transfer all models to one platform and unify them according to the component base - remove the “original” motors, gearboxes, and other components in favor of unified ones. All this is logical, but the question is how the Russian government will react to this. After all, such plans threaten the closure of one or even two automobile enterprises (and the same plant in Izhevsk is important for the region), a revision of relationships with suppliers (at least those of them that produce parts for “outgoing” models are under attack) . There is also the question of the degree of localization, which threatens to decrease with the transition to a new imported platform.

In the end, let’s not forget that in order to receive preferences, foreign manufacturers enter into an investment contract with the Ministry of Industry and Trade, that is, they undertake certain obligations to invest funds, develop production, and introduce new technologies. In general, plans are plans, but in relation to the Russian market and the auto industry, they will at least have to be coordinated. And here it may turn out that factories cannot be closed and local suppliers cannot be deprived of orders either. And then you will have to adjust the strategy locally...

Our verdict

How stable the new strategy will be as it is implemented and what will actually happen will only be known after some distant time. But in any case, it is obvious: if for the first few decades the Lada model range was a derivative of Fiat cars, then before our eyes history is taking a turn - now we face a period of adaptation, reconfiguration and updating of equipment from Renault-Dacia. The main thing is that the era of technological (and any other) stagnation does not come again.

Maintenance and repair

Once again, when evaluating the Renault Logan versus the Lada Grant, you can see the higher cost of both the French car itself and its subsequent maintenance. But with careful operation, the quality of foreign transport will allow you to use it much longer.

For example, basic sound insulation on Renault is better. Granta, in turn, with subsequent annual maintenance reaches the same level, and sometimes requires more costs than Logan.

Therefore, preference should be given to transport that meets the buyer’s requirements in terms of quality, characteristics and resulting practicality. Regardless of the manufacturer, the purchased car must fully pay for itself during subsequent use.

Someone will say that since the Lada Granta is a Russian car, it will be much cheaper and easier to maintain than a car of a foreign brand.

And this is a fairly common misconception. Both cars are, by definition, budget-friendly, and there is no talk of any expensive maintenance here. For AvtoVAZ, one of the key aspects of successful sales was to provide customers with an appropriate level of service, availability of spare parts and the ability to carry out repairs themselves.

Although not perfect, the enterprise coped with its tasks. Spare parts for Granta are very easy to find; they are quite cheap compared to many competitors, but not Renault Logan. Carrying out independent repairs will also not be difficult when you have at least minimal experience and some basic knowledge.

But all this applies to domestic cars. It would be strange to produce Russian cars in Russia for which expensive spare parts or unavailable components are offered.

Despite its French roots, Renault Logan also managed to become a people's car in Russia. It is highly valued and loved because the car is as reliable and trouble-free as possible. Granta is still inferior in this component, since the car from the factory has a number of defects that appear a short time after the start of operation. Logan is also not perfect, but it looks preferable to its competitor.

Although such a comparison initially gives a certain advantage to the Lada Granta, even here the Renault Logan managed to show its best side. For Logan, spare parts are also cheap, the car easily accepts non-original parts, and can work with not the highest quality consumables.
