During the production of the first engine, the engines were improved and the VAZ 2106 and 2107 engines are considered to be the best representatives. Before we begin to describe maintenance and repair, it is worth understanding which VAZ engines were installed on the “Classic”:

VAZ 2107

This vehicle was produced at the AvtoVAZ plant for the longest time, for 30 years, after which it was discontinued because it was morally and technically outdated. If this car had been produced to this day, there would have been a very high demand for it, since the low price and simplicity of the design won the trust of motorists.

Both carburetor and injection engines were installed on the VAZ 2107 car. The first ones were marked 2103, 2105 and 2106. As for the injector, the VAZ engine was marked 21071 and 21073.

The legendary classic was equipped with four different gasoline engines, as well as one diesel engine. The first petrol unit is 1.2 liters. Its power was 64 horsepower, and a carburetor was responsible for supplying fuel. Fuel consumption per 100 km of this configuration was registered at 7.6 liters.

The next engine was 1.3 liters, the power of which was also 64 horsepower. The carburetor was also responsible for fuel here. There was also a special version with a rotary engine, the peak power of which was as much as 140 hp. Gasoline consumption here varied from 7.6 to 7.9 liters.

The first power plants, where an injector was installed, had a volume of 1.5 liters. The power of this version was 71 horsepower, and the consumption was 8.9 liters. The highest consumption was in the version with the 1.6 liter engine. With a power of only 74 hp, it consumed up to 9.1 liters of fuel. Both a carburetor and an injector could be installed here.

The diesel representative had a volume of 1.5 liters and developed only 50 horsepower. However, its consumption was at 6.1 liters. All power plants were controlled by five-speed manual transmissions.

Review of the Lada 2105 model

The VAZ-2105 car was produced at the Tolyatti Automobile Plant (as well as at the KraSZ factories in Ukraine and Lada Egypt in Egypt) for 31 years - from 1979 to 2010, i.e. it was in production longer than any other VAZ model. By the end of the 2000s, thanks to the minimum configuration, the “five” was cheaper than each of the Volzhsky Automobile Plant models produced at that time - 178 thousand rubles in 2009.

Having replaced the first-generation Zhiguli, the VAZ-2105 received a more contemporary appearance at that time with angular shapes and matte black decorative elements instead of the previously used chrome ones. The creators of the new model sought not only to simplify assembly, but also to achieve an acceptable cost for the car. For example, the abandonment of chrome-plated parts made it possible to get rid of the long and labor-intensive technological process of applying several layers of non-ferrous metals to steel. Among the innovations that were not present on previous VAZ models were:

  • timing belt (instead of the previously used chain);
  • polyurethane panels in the interior, made by solid stamping;
  • block headlights equipped with hydraulic corrector;
  • combination of clearance lights, turn signals, reversing lights, brake lights and fog lights under one rear lamp shade;
  • heated rear window as standard.

In addition, the rotating wind triangles on the windows of the front doors of the new car were removed, and side nozzles began to be used to blow these windows. The driver could now adjust the position of the side mirrors from the passenger compartment; height-adjustable headrests were provided for front passengers.

The VAZ-2105 body number can be found under the hood near the windshield closer to the passenger seat. The vehicle's registration data is indicated on a special plate located on the bottom shelf of the air supply box. In addition, the vehicle identification code indicated in the table is duplicated in the luggage compartment. To obtain the above engine characteristics, the manufacturer carried out experiments:

  • piston stroke reduced to 66 mm;
  • the cylinder diameter, on the contrary, is increased to 79 mm.

The result was a revving, powerful engine with an aluminum valve cover that absorbed the sounds of the drive. Another feature of the internal combustion engine is the fastening of the timing belt pulley - users do not need to unscrew the bolt on the crankshaft, unlike previous VAZ engine models.

In the operating instructions, the manufacturer recommends which oil to pour into the engine - 5W30 - 15W40.

If you find that your car suddenly begins to pull weaker or accelerates more slowly, do not start checking with the injector. First of all, check the condition of the air and fuel filters, then determine the tire pressure, then measure the engine compression and use a strobe light to check the OZ. Carefully inspect the hose that goes from the intake manifold to the brake booster. Perhaps one of the clamps is not tightened well or there is an air leak at the point of contact with the amplifier. Fuel consumption

  • Fuel consumption in urban conditions is 9.4 liters per 100 km.
  • On a flat road at cruising speed it will already be 6.9 liters per 100 km.
  • In mixed mode, consumption will be from 8 to 9 liters per 100 km. Such figures do not allow us to call this engine economical, but in this case a lot depends on the driver himself.
  • Another parameter that depends on the driver is oil consumption per 100 km. For the average driver of a car with this engine, it is 700 g per 100 km. This, of course, is not small, but with careful driving you can reduce this consumption down to 450-500 g/100 km.
  • The weight of the 2103 engine when fully assembled is 121 kg.

Installing a zero resistance filter

You can slightly increase engine power and make driving more comfortable by installing a zero-resistance filter. Its essence lies in high throughput, that is, air enters the engine with less resistance. The work can be done as follows:

1. We remove the pan from the carburetor.

2. We install the turtle, which was borrowed from 2141. It does not fit a little in size, but with a little pressing, it will fall into place. Let us note that the structure is quite fragile, which means that a large load should not be applied.

3.The turtle has large holes, so you need to use washers to secure it.

4.The zero resistance filter can be secured with a clamp.

In addition, you will have to disconnect the battery mount and push in the filter, since the hood may not close. In this way, you can add up to 10-20 horses. At the same time, the costs are not significant; there is no need to carry out complex work on changing the engine.

Technical characteristics of VAZ-21053

This modification could be equipped with several engines. Initially, the VAZ-21053 was equipped with a carburetor engine from the Troika. It was an eight-valve one and a half liter engine with a timing chain and a power of 72 horsepower. Torque – 104 Nm. The gearbox could be different. At first, the “five” was equipped with a four-speed manual, and then with a five-speed one.

In 2000, the carburetor engine was replaced with an injection engine. So, under the hood of the “classic” there was a “four” engine with distributed injection. With a volume of 1.5 liters, it developed the same 72 horsepower. However, the torque has increased. Now it is 110 Nm. Also, the power unit began to comply with the Euro-2 environmental standard. There was no alternative mechanics offered as a transmission. As experience in operating the VAZ-21053 shows, the box began to howl over time due to the bearings. But this was not considered a serious disadvantage.

Among the main disadvantages of the Zhiguli, the owners noted poor acceleration dynamics. Depending on the type of engine and gearbox, the “five” accelerated to hundreds in 17-20 seconds. The maximum speed ranged from 142 to 150 kilometers per hour. At the same time, the car was voracious. The classic engine consumed an average of 10 liters of 92-grade gasoline per 100 kilometers. Moreover, on the highway this consumption did not drop significantly, due to the “brick” aerodynamics.

The engine had the same shortcomings as other Zhiguli engines. These are rapid wear of the camshaft, the need to adjust the valves, increased oil consumption, problems with the ignition system, etc. With proper maintenance, the engine life before major overhaul was about 180 thousand kilometers.

Adjustment procedure

The initial setting is performed during the installation of the carburetor on the car after washing. In this case, you need to adjust the following elements.

  1. Starting cable. The braid is secured with a bolt in the socket, and the end of the cable is inserted into the hole in the screw clamp. The purpose of the setting is to ensure that the air damper closes completely when the handle is pulled from inside the passenger compartment.

Ideally, the final adjustment of the carburetor is done using a gas analyzer that measures the content of carbon monoxide CO in the exhaust. In order for fuel consumption to be within the normal range and the engine to receive a sufficient amount of combustible mixture, the CO level at idle should be within the range of 0.7-1.2 units. The second measurement is performed at 2000 rpm of the crankshaft, the permissible limits are from 0.8 to 2.0 units.

In garage conditions and in the absence of a gas analyzer, candles serve as an indicator of optimal fuel combustion. Before starting the engine, they need to be checked for functionality and cleaned, ideally - new ones installed. Then manual adjustment is performed.

  1. Unscrew the quantity screw by 6–7, the quality screw by 3.5 turns. Using the “choke”, start and warm up the engine to operating temperature, then push the handle down.

The adjusting screws have a significant impact on the composition and quantity of the mixture during idle. After pressing the accelerator and opening the throttle, the main dosing system is turned on, preparing the fuel mixture according to the throughput of the main jets. The screws can no longer influence this process.

When repairing and adjusting the DAAZ 2107 carburetor, it is important not to lose sight of the little things - change all worn parts, gaskets and rubber rings. The slightest leak leads to air leaks and improper operation of the unit.

Jets require careful handling - picking calibrated holes with metal objects is unacceptable.

Design

VAZ-21053 is the progenitor of the “seven”. Externally, it is very similar to the VAZ-2107, with the exception of the radiator grille. It became the first model in which they strongly decided to abandon chrome (in order to reduce the cost of the design). Thus, the radiator grille was completely black, and the shiny moldings usual for the “Classics” were absent on the body. Other differences include new rectangular headlights with integrated turn signals. Also, other bumpers appeared on the “five”. They were also metal, but more voluminous and lacking “fangs”.

The design of the front side windows has also changed. Previously, the Classic had windows. With the advent of the “five”, the door received solid glass. The design of the rear lights has changed. Otherwise, the body structure remains the same. By the way, initially only 13-inch stamped wheels were offered for the Zhiguli. In the 2000s, 14-inch alloy wheels became available for the VAZ-21053.

Among the disadvantages of this car, owners note the quality of corrosion protection. The car is rotting badly. Therefore, it is not surprising that the “five” could be repainted several times. And touch-ups are completely normal for her. The weak points of the “five” are the sills, bottom and arches. There is no protection against corrosion here. In order to somehow protect against rust, the owners themselves coat the bottom with mastic, treat the thresholds with anti-gravel and other means. Plastic fender liners are also often installed on the car.

So, it all started with my purchase of a car (the choice fell on the VAZ 2107). And as you know, purchasing a car obliges the owner (to begin with) to understand at least a little about its maintenance and, accordingly, repairs. But for me (a novice car enthusiast) everything that was under the hood was a huge secret. Of course, experience is gained over the years, and since I didn’t have the latter (and I knew very little, practically nothing about the “insides” of the car), little by little I began to understand the design features of my Zhiguli. Therefore, so that to my colleagues (novice car enthusiasts) the engine compartment and everything in it does not seem too “dark”, in this article I will tell you what is where and what is responsible for what.

Now about the main thing.

1. Battery – Designed to power electrical equipment when the engine is not running or at low engine speeds. When the engine is running, the power supply is mainly provided by the generator, which also recharges the battery. The battery is one of those items that should be under special attention.

2. Air filter - serves to clean (process) the air entering the engine cylinders. It consists of a housing with an inlet pipe, a cover and a filter paper element. Know that the correct “air” supply to the engine depends on the condition of the filter element. If there is severe clogging or destruction, quite strong losses in power are possible (poor traction).

3. Radiator - serves to remove high temperature from the engine, thereby preserving and reducing wear of engine parts (after all, when the engine is running, temperatures up to 2500 ºС arise, and such a temperature causes strong heating of the parts and their expansion, which can cause intense wear).

4. Radiator cap – hermetically closes the radiator filler neck and serves to automatically regulate the temperature and pressure of the coolant. Structurally, it has inlet and outlet valves.

5. Ignition distributor (distributor) - refers to ignition devices, designed to supply high current to the spark plugs. It consists of a low voltage current breaker and a high voltage current distributor combined in one housing.

6. Gasoline pump (or fuel pump) - serves to supply gasoline (fuel) from the fuel tank to the carburetor under excess pressure. Diaphragm type.

7. Expansion tank - it contains a certain amount of coolant, designed to compensate for the constantly changing volume of liquid in the cooling system of a running engine (by the way, the “supply” of liquid is regulated by a valve in the radiator cap).

8. Windshield washer reservoir - serves to store a certain amount of water, which is supplied to the jets, which, if necessary, clean the glass. Structurally combined with an electric pump.

9. Relay – designed for switching (turning on, turning off, switching...) electrical circuits from an external signal. Structurally, it consists of a relay element (usually a coil) and a group of contacts that open or close depending on the state of the relay element. There are a large number of relays - electrical, optical, thermal, etc.

10. Mounting block - it contains fuses for electrical circuits that protect the car’s electrics from possible short circuits. In addition, it contains relays for switching headlights (high/low), turning on the sound signal, etc.

11. Engine – serves to set the car in motion.

12. Spark plugs - used to ignite the working mixture in the cylinders with a spark. Structurally, it consists of a metal casing, inside of which a ceramic insulator is placed. Inside the insulator there is a central electrode, the upper part of which is steel, and the lower part consists of an alloy of nickel and manganese.

13. Brake fluid reservoir – serves to compensate the brake fluid in the brake system. Structurally, the nutrient tank is combined with a brake fluid level sensor.

14. Clutch fluid reservoir – serves to compensate for the volume of clutch fluid during operation.

Turbine on a VAZ engine

You can also come across a common question regarding the installation of a turbine on VAZ engines. This is due to the fact that the turbine can increase engine power by approximately 20% without loss of service life due to more efficient enrichment of the mixture with air and the creation of a high-quality fuel-air mixture.

The TKR-7 turbocharger is more suitable than others for installation on VAZ engines. It has a radial centripetal turbine type, the wheel diameter is 74 mm, the pressure ratio in the system is 1.6, and the air flow is about 0.4 kg/s. Recommendations for installing a turbine on a VAZ are as follows:

  • First, you should reduce the pressure, since too high will cause the pistons to burn out and the exhaust valve to burn out. The recommended pressure should be 1.2. This figure will be enough to increase power by at least 20%.
  • The degree of supply of exhaust gases is also reduced, for which a bypass pipe is installed. You can install replaceable throttling washers at the inlet to the TCR.
  • We remove the battery to the left side of the compartment.
  • Remove the carburetor and air filter.
  • We install an aluminum intake pipe on the standard site.
  • We install the gas supply pipe through the standard gasket.
  • The TKR is fixed on the horizontal flange of the pipe.
  • We fix the rectangular flange of the pipe through the copper gasket.
  • Instead of a pressure plate, a throttle valve drive bracket is mounted, to which the slides and long rods are attached.

The work is quite complex and requires knowledge of all the operating features of the internal combustion engine and turbine.

Tuning model

Increasing the power of a VAZ 2105 with a belt motor is much more difficult than, for example, a VAZ 21053. For example, when using a “humpbacked” camshaft, it will be necessary to install a split drive gear. But it simply does not exist for the “five” engine with a belt; it will not be possible to set marks. It would be better then to replace the engine completely, for example, install a 2105 diesel or purchase a kit for conversion to an injector. Still, of all types of VAZ fuel, diesel fuel is the cheapest. And the injector, although gasoline, will also reduce fuel consumption, because its design is such that the jets are controlled electronically.

Deep tuning of a VAZ engine should be carried out only for certain creative reasons. Light modifications to the VAZ 2105 can be done with your own hands without spending a lot of money. For example, if the VAZ 2105 engine is overheating, it is quite possible to modify the power system. And, in addition to this, reduce fuel consumption on the VAZ.

Before starting work, you should carefully read the recommendations, draw up an approximate tuning budget and parts estimate, and familiarize yourself with where the markings and marks are on the parts. It often turns out that the set aside funds are not enough. Probably everyone can guess why this happens. Reliability

The VAZ-2105 is considered a fairly reliable engine. An important indicator of reliability is mileage. The declared 125 thousand km in practice is exceeded almost three times. It all depends on the car owner’s attitude towards the engine.

When communicating on thematic forums, car enthusiasts emphasize the reliability of internal combustion engines. The reliability of the motor is indicated by its high safety margin. It must be remembered that increasing power significantly reduces mileage.

Although the use of simple types of tuning (replacing the carburetor, etc.) will give a slight increase in power, reliability will not suffer from this.

For lovers of powerful engines, it is easier to consider the option of a swap than to remake an installed VAZ-2105.

Weak spots

The engine is prone to malfunctions that are typical for all VAZ engines. It is worth noting that the majority of malfunctions are caused by car owners themselves.

  • Noisy engine operation. This is usually due to unadjusted valve clearances. The manufacturer recommends performing this work after 10 thousand kilometers.
  • Overheat. Caused by a faulty thermostat or faulty cooling fan.
  • Engine tripping. The reason must be sought in the electrics. Checking the spark plugs, high-voltage wires, cover and distributor of the breaker (distributor) is often enough to find the fault and restore normal engine operation.
  • Unstable engine speed. As a rule, clogged filters or carburetor jets cause this particular problem. Cleaning them eliminates the problem.
  • Destruction of the cylinder head gasket. This is perhaps the only weak point in the engine, where the blame lies entirely with the manufacturer. Of course, if the engine did not overheat.

Other problems also arise, but they are not critical and can be easily fixed on your own (leaks of technical fluids through seals, oil seals, etc.).

Engine and transmission

The engine from the VAZ-2106 was installed on the VAZ-21074 model without any modifications. The technical characteristics of the engine made it possible to achieve a power of 74 hp. With. There are 2 valves per cylinder. The “five” had a belt drive of the camshaft, which made the engine less noisy. However, a belt is less reliable than a chain. Therefore, on a more powerful engine, it was decided to leave the timing chain transmission unchanged.

The gearbox compares favorably with its predecessors. It has a fifth speed, the gear ratio of which is 0.819. All other speeds have lower gear ratios compared to previous analogues. As a result, the gearbox operates more “softly”. The rear axle gearbox with self-locking differentials has 22 splines - it was borrowed from the VAZ-2106 model.

The suspension of the front pair of wheels is independent. The rear suspension has a rigid beam. This design significantly improved the car's stability when cornering.

Engine tuning

By analogy with the manufacturer’s previous internal combustion engines, the 2105 engine can increase power in several ways:

  • boring the cylinders to fit the size of the larger piston;
  • increasing the stroke length of the connecting rod;
  • installation of a sports camshaft;
  • installation of 4 or 2 carburetors;
  • boring of cylinder head channels.

This version was discontinued either in 2002 or five years later. This inaccuracy is associated with the anarchy that reigned at that time on the VAZ assembly line and at the assembly facilities in Izhevsk. Then the sevens were assembled from what was available and few people thought about the conformity of the modification. In addition, there was a directive to reduce the cost of the car design as much as possible. For example, in the middle of the first decade of the 11th century, you could buy a seven with the following factory tuning:

There may be no ashtrays on the rear door cards;

soft two-layer plastic could be missing, and instead of it, ordinary oak plastic could easily be found;

the armrest handles could also be cast from this very hard plastic;

the horns in the latest versions resembled moped tablets, which, when first wet, emitted a gentle squeak instead of the powerful signal of the standard seven horn;

the door pillars are no longer painted black;

The combined moldings along the sides disappeared.

It was also often possible to find new sevens without headlight washers at all. But all this did not stop the public and they willingly bought cars. The result was a revving, powerful engine with an aluminum valve cover that absorbed the sounds of the drive. Another feature of the internal combustion engine is the fastening of the timing belt pulley - users do not need to unscrew the bolt on the crankshaft, unlike previous VAZ engine models.

This modernization could not satisfy users of the domestic automobile industry. The main drawback was the regular breakage of the timing belt, AvtoAZ management reduced production volumes, then removed the 2105 engine from production, so only three modifications of the Zhiguli were equipped with the engine:
