The relay and fuse box is also called the mounting block or black box. If problems are identified in the car related to electrical equipment, first check the fuses and relays. If they burn out, we replace them with the same ones, but first we must determine the cause of the burnout.

What is a turn relay?

Turn relay (turn signal breaker relay, current breaker) is an electrical or electronic device designed to close and open the circuit of a vehicle's light direction indicators in order to generate an intermittent signal to warn that the vehicle is performing certain maneuvers.

This device has four main functions:

  • Formation of an intermittent signal from the direction indicator lights on one side of the car (on the right or left) when performing the corresponding maneuvers;
  • Formation of an intermittent signal of all direction indicator lights when the hazard warning lights are turned on;
  • Formation of an intermittent signal from the corresponding warning lamp on the dashboard;
  • Generating an intermittent sound signal informing the driver that the direction indicators are on.

The breaker relay is part of three electrical circuits: two turn signal light circuits on the right and left sides of the vehicle, and one hazard warning circuit (which includes turn signal lights on both sides of the vehicle). To turn on the light alarm, the relay is connected to the corresponding circuit using the steering column switch. Therefore, usually only one turn relay is installed on vehicles.

Current traffic rules and standards establish that all motor vehicles operating on the territory of the Russian Federation must be equipped with direction indicators, and the use of this signaling is mandatory when performing any maneuvers. If the light alarm is not working, it is necessary to take measures to eliminate the malfunction; most often, repairs come down to simply replacing the turn signal breaker relay. But before you buy and change a relay, you need to understand the types of these devices that exist today, their design and characteristics.

For Lada Granta FL

The Lada Granta FL (updated family) has a 66.3787 relay installed, which differs from the previous ones in that SMD resistors are soldered into it. They are very small, so re-soldering them with your own hands will not be so easy. To replace, you will need an SMD resistor number 183 (18 kOhm), and they can solder it at a phone repair service for 50 rubles. It is necessary to replace the resistor 3922 (39 kOhm) with the 183rd one. After modification there will be 2 sweeps of the wipers, not 4. Author Stanislav Ivanov

Let us remind you that you can improve windshield cleaning by replacing the standard jets (washer nozzles) with fan jets.

Most fuses are located in the mounting block inside the car. The serial numbers of fuses and relays are indicated on the housing of the mounting block. The purpose of the relay and the circuits protected by fuses are indicated by symbols on the inside of the instrument panel trim, which covers the location where the fuses are installed. The current strength for the fuses is also indicated there. Additional relays can be installed to the left of the Lada Granta mounting block.

Cars VAZ 2190, VAZ 2191 - 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015.

Cars Lada Granta Liftback, Granta Luxury, Granta Standard, Granta Norma were also considered.

Where is the mounting block located on the grant?

In the cabin. The fuse and relay mounting block is installed in the instrument panel on the left side.

1. Pull and remove the instrument panel trim

2. Using the number on the inside of the trim, we find the fuse for the faulty circuit.

3. Using tweezers, remove the faulty fuse

Sometimes the fuse thread remains intact, while its connection inside the fuse is broken. It is impossible to visually determine such a malfunction. In this case, you can assess the condition of the fuse using an ohmmeter or a test lamp.

Classification, design and principle of operation of the turn relay

Two main types of relays are used on cars, tractors and other equipment:

Devices of these types differ in the physical operating principles embedded in them and, accordingly, in their design.

Electromagnetic thermal current interrupters. These are turn relays of an old design, which have been used on cars for several decades, but thanks to their simple design and reliability, they have not yet lost their relevance.

The basis of this device is an electromagnetic core with a coil and two steel armatures with contact groups. One armature is pulled away from its contact by a thin string of nichrome (a metal with high resistivity and a high coefficient of thermal expansion), the second armature is held at some distance from its contact by a springy bronze plate. The operation of this type of relay is quite simple. When the turn indicators are turned on, current flows through the core winding, nichrome string and resistor, the resistance of this circuit is high, so the lamps glow at full intensity. Within a short time, the string heats up and, due to thermal expansion, lengthens - the armature is attracted to its contact and closes the circuit - in this case, the current flows bypassing the string and the resistor, the turn signal lamps glow at full intensity. The de-energized string quickly cools, shortens and pulls the armature away from the contact - the circuit breaks, the current flows along the string again and the process repeats.

At the moment the contacts close, a large current flows through the electromagnetic core, a magnetic field is formed around it, which attracts the second armature - the second group of contacts is closed, which turns on the lamp on the dashboard. Thanks to this, the operation of the direction indicators is duplicated by the intermittent operation of the lamp on the dashboard. The described processes can occur with a frequency of 60-120 times per minute (that is, each cycle of heating and cooling of the string takes from 0.5 to 1 second).

Electromagnetic-thermal type relays are usually housed in a cylindrical metal housing with screw or blade contacts and can be mounted in the engine compartment or under the dashboard.

Electronic turn switches. These are modern devices that are used on all new cars. Today there are two types of electronic relays:

• With an electromagnetic relay for connecting the load (turn indicator lamps); • With an electronic key for connecting the load.

In the first case, the turn relay consists of two functional blocks - a simple electromagnetic relay and an electronic key on a semiconductor device (transistor or microcircuit). The electronic key acts as a clock generator, which, at a preset frequency, supplies current to the winding of the electromagnetic relay, and the relay contacts, by closing and opening, ensure that the direction indicators are turned on and off.

In the second case, instead of an electromagnetic relay, an electronic key with a powerful transistor is used, which ensures the connection and disconnection of the direction indicators with the required frequency.

Electronic relays are usually housed in standard plastic housings with blade contacts, they are usually installed in the relay and fuse box, less often - under the dashboard or in the engine compartment.

Useful tips

If the fuse constantly blows, then this is a reason to think about the correct operation of this circuit. We also do not recommend making changes to the design unless absolutely necessary.

Thank you, your article helped me a lot, for a long time I couldn’t figure out which fuse was from what, an eternal problem, thanks to your diagram I can easily find the breakdown.

On my 2013 Grant Luxury, the diagram on the cover does not correspond to the actual location of the relay, because... There is no relay for turns, windshield wipers and some others. These functions are controlled through the “brains”. According to the old Zhiguli tradition, the lids are made identical. This is a known fact and it is strange that the authors of the article do not know about it. It’s very easy to find out how your fuse box is arranged. Swing the turn signal lever, swing the windshield wiper lever....

If the turn signal blinks three times and the windshield wiper makes one pass, then you do not have a relay.

Questions regarding the correct purchase and replacement of a turn relay

Relay failure is one of the common problems with the electrical system of cars, and although the rules of the road do not prohibit the operation of a vehicle with faulty turn indicators (as the signals can be given by hand), this part should be replaced as soon as possible if it breaks down. For replacement, you need to choose a relay of the same type and model that was previously installed on the car. However, today there are many analogues of the most common turn relays on the market, and among them you can choose the right device. To make the right choice, you need to consider the following:

  • Supply voltage - the relay must correspond to the power supply of the vehicle (12 or 24 volts);
  • Number and location of contacts (pinout) - the relay must fit into its place in the relay and fuse block or in a separate connector without any modifications;
  • Case dimensions - the relay should not exceed the dimensions of the relay and fuse box (although there are exceptions).

We offer the following instructions:

1) By pulling, remove the cover of the mounting block, simultaneously overcoming the resistance of the latches. There are five of them here;

2) Disconnect the wire block from the trunk drive switch (trunk lock);

3) As in the engine compartment, on the inside of the cover there is a diagram showing the purpose of the fuses and their location;

4) Using small tweezers, remove the fuse;

5) We take out the burnt fuse and insert a new one to replace it.

For the Grant model range, the mounting block provides only standard fuses that are designed for the appropriate current value; the use of others is strictly prohibited!

What are turn signal relays for?

A turn signal relay, also called a breaker relay, ensures that the turn signals operate correctly. Unlike other lighting devices, turn signals operate intermittently, that is, they blink. This ensures additional attention from others to the vehicle driver’s intention to perform a maneuver: change lanes, make a turn, etc.

The intermittent operation of the direction indicators is ensured by the breaker relay. It closes and opens the electrical circuit, causing the turn signal lamps to flash, attracting the attention of others. Also, the breaker relay additionally ensures the creation of an audible click, which reminds the driver of the car that the turn signal switch is on. And the last function of the turn signal relay is the operation of the hazard warning lights, so in modern cars the operation of the turn signals and emergency lights is provided by one relay.

The absence of blinking of the direction indicators is equivalent to their malfunction, so a breakdown of the relay will not allow the driver to pass the inspection. Also, incorrect operation of turn signals is regarded as a failure to comply with traffic regulations to warn other drivers about the maneuver and can lead to a fine from the traffic police in the amount of 500 rubles.

Work principles

The variety of turn relays is quite large, but they are all divided into two main types:

  • classical electromagnetic-thermal relays;
  • electronic relays.

Electromagnetic-thermal relays are considered obsolete and can now only be found on very old cars, for example, classic Zhiguli cars. This type of relay consists of a core with a copper winding. There are two contact groups in the upper part of the core, and metal anchors in the sides. The structure is placed in a metal case, in the lower part of which contacts for connecting to the network are output.

When the turn switch is turned on, the network is closed - the lamp does not light. Then one of the anchors, under the influence of the nichrome string in the core, straightens and closes the contacts. After this, the current begins to flow in a bypass circuit, and the lamp lights up at full power. The click of the turn signals is ensured by the impact of a metal armature on the contacts.

Where are the fuses for LADA GRANT?

Probably not everyone knows the location of the fuses on the Grant, especially if you just purchased this car. In fact, everything is simple: the main mounting block is located in the cabin on the left side directly to the right of the headlight control unit.

To open the lid, pull the lower left corner of the lid and release the left locking point. Then release the top points and remove the cover. The lid is closed in the reverse order; you just need to make sure that all the latches snap into place.

On the plastic cover on the reverse side are drawn all the symbols and elements for which each fuse and relay is responsible.

Causes of malfunctions

Malfunctions of the turn relay are usually associated with a violation of the electromagnetic patency in the relay itself. The cause may be burnt or shorted contacts, swollen capacitors, failure of the electronic circuit, etc. Typically, the cause of relay failure can be identified by the characteristic manifestations of the malfunction.

  1. If the turn signals are constantly on and do not blink, then most likely the cause of the malfunction is a breakdown of the electromagnetic part of the relay. Most often, this is due to shorted contacts due to their burning.
  2. Unusual blinking of the turn signals (too fast or too infrequent) may also be due to the turn signal relay. However, in this case, you can look for the problem in other places. Possible reasons for this behavior of the indicators may lie in oxidation of the lamp socket or base, or a break in the wire going to the lamps. This phenomenon also often occurs after replacing standard incandescent lamps in direction indicators with LEDs. If none of these possible reasons is confirmed, then, most likely, the breakdown still lies in the relay.
  3. Another option for incorrect operation of the turn relay is that the indicator lamps do not light up at all. This phenomenon occurs when the relay contacts burn out. However, this manifestation of a malfunction is also typical for other breakdowns: a blown fuse, an open circuit or a broken turn switch.

DIY repair

Repairing a failed turn signal relay usually involves replacing the part. Its cost is not so high as to take a radio electronics course and try to repair a failed relay. The turn relay itself is located in the relay and fuse box, usually located under the front panel of the car. In some car models, the turn signal relay is placed in a separate connector.

Replacing the relay is not difficult. To do this, you need to determine its exact location (you can find it in the manual for a specific car model or look up a diagram on the Internet). The broken relay is dismantled, and a new one is installed in the relay unit or in a separate connector. The voltage of the new unit must correspond to the vehicle's electrical power supply (12 or 24 volts).

For those who still prefer to do the repairs themselves, here are some tips. If the contacts of the relay are burnt, you can try to clean them, but this measure is unlikely to last long. You also need to solder broken contacts if there is this type of damage. If there are cracks in the power terminals of the relay, then they also need to be soldered. Capacitors that have lost capacity or are swollen should be replaced with new ones.

Naturally, for such repairs you need to have a soldering iron and know how to use it. Repairing a relay in this case is no different from repairing any radio-electronic part. You will need flux and solder, and when replacing capacitors, you must not forget about the correct polarity.

Changing the lamp

So, we have the following task: Lada Granta turn signals do not work. The first step is to check whether the lamp has burned out. Let's say it burned out. This means it needs to be replaced. The front turn signals are equipped with PY21W lamps; you can purchase a new lamp and replace it yourself.

In order to pull out the lamp, you need to press on the socket and turn it. The direction of rotation depends on which side the headlight is located on. If on the right, then turn it clockwise. On the left - against, of course. Next, it should be pulled out of the cartridge. To do this, press the lamp and turn it counterclockwise all the way. Now you can insert a new lamp and return everything as it was.

A W5W lamp is installed in the side turn signal. How to get it? Let's say you are on the right wing. In this case, you need to move the turn signal housing to the right (correspondingly, the left one - to the left) and remove the indicator. The lamp socket rotates counterclockwise. Having taken out the lamp, you can replace it and put everything back together, after inspecting the rubber gasket. If you are not satisfied with it, this is a good time to replace it.

Everything is fine with the lamp, but the turn signals on Grant still don’t work? Let's move on.
