The standard radio for Kalina 2 and Grant has all the necessary functions for a modern car. The audio system works flawlessly, there are no freezes, all operations are performed instantly. The build quality is at a high level. The only disadvantage is the lack of a CD/DVD drive, but nowadays discs are becoming a thing of the past. The standard radio of the Lada Kalina 2 and Granta without an LCD display is a good alternative for those who find physical buttons more convenient than a sensor.
The standard radio for the Lada Granta model is an improved device, the design basis of which is the “Sirf Atlas” processor, supplied by the well-known. In addition to the presence of a radio receiver, the device is equipped with a large touch screen and has the ability to connect an external source via a video input by replacing the software and performing firmware. However, in the basic configuration of a domestic car there is only a push-button radio. Many owners are not happy with this fact and want to connect a more modern radio. This article will tell you how to install a radio.
Hidden capabilities of standard Lada radios
In order to improve the sound quality in Lada Granta, Vesta, Priora, Kalina cars, it is absolutely not necessary to purchase a new radio. You can set up a crappy radio on these cars and get acceptable sound quality, suitable even for building a basic audio system in a car. But how to do this? How to set up the standard radio in Lada Granta, Vesta, Priora, Kalina? Let's find out!
Lada Granta head unit settings
To improve the sound quality, we need to adjust the equalizer on Grant's standard radio. To do this, press the center key on the console once, go to the equalizer, then to the user settings. In this menu, we enable the loudness function, adjust the high and low frequencies, as well as the sound balance and sound volume distribution between the front and rear speakers. Watch the video below to see how to do this:
Setting the equalizer of the Lada Granta (Kalina, Datsun) head unit:
It is important to know! On standard Lada Granta, Kalina radios, the equalizer must be adjusted for each sound source separately! That is, you need to configure loudness, high and low frequencies and other settings separately for the radio, music from a flash drive, music from a phone (AUX). For information on how to turn off the sound signal when pressing a key on the standard radio of a Grant or Kalina, see the chapter - Hidden capabilities of standard Lada radios
PS To improve the sound on standard Lada radios, it is very important to turn on the loudness function!
Lada Vesta head unit settings
The basic quality settings of the Lada Vesta radio are as simple as those on the Grant. You can customize the sound in just a couple of minutes. To get into the equalizer we need to press the center key on the radio console. The first thing we need to do in the equalizer is to enable the loudness function. By activating it, we will immediately hear a richer and more vibrant sound from the car speakers. Next, we can now adjust the high and low frequencies, as well as the sound balance, at our discretion. (Sound balance is the time interval at the beginning of music playback between the left and right speakers. Balance settings help center the sound in the car.) In order to turn off the sound signal when pressing the button of the Lada Vesta standard radio, we need to find the item in the radio settings menu - Signal and turn it off.
Setting the sound of the Lada Vesta head unit:
Lada Priora head unit settings
To connect a phone or player to a shaky Priora radio via Bluetooth, you need to turn on the Navi mode (a2dp) and press the call button, and then the af key. If Bluetooth requires a PIN code, then you need to enter 0000 - the default.
Setting up the Lada Priora head unit:
PS If the Priora's stock radio is frozen, you can reboot it quickly and easily. To do this, you need to press the Reset button, which is recessed into a very small hole. You can press it using a toothpick or similar thin object.
Lada Kalina head unit settings
The standard radio on Kalina is configured in exactly the same way as on Grant. Here you also need to go to the equalizer settings menu and enable the loudness compensation function. Next, you need to adjust the high and low frequencies as you wish. The sound signal when you press the radio buttons can be turned off in the hidden radio options menu. How to get to the hidden settings menu, see the chapter - Hidden capabilities of standard Lada radios.

About setting up standard radios for Grant, Vesta, Priora, Kalina
Friends, let’s once again briefly go through the most important points in setting up the standard radios of the Lada Grant and Kalina, Vesta, Priora. The most important thing to improve the sound quality of the standard radio is that we need to go to the equalizer menu item and there, in the settings, enable the loudness compensation function. It will use the radio processor and begin to automatically equalize the frequencies of the songs. For even better sound quality, we can adjust the low and high frequencies, as well as the sound balance, to your taste. The sound settings in rickety Lada Priora radios are much simpler and easy to adjust. It is much more important to know that the Bluetooth function is enabled through Navi mode (a2dp) and pressing the call button and then the af key. If the Bluetooth function on the Priora's standard radio requires a PIN code, then you must enter 0000 - this is the default password.

Advice for future and current owners of VAZ push-button radios
The release of standard VAZ “devices”, devoid of an expensive “sensor”, has been expected for a long time. Back in the first half of the year, we were told that such a unit should appear in the fall. As you can see, VAZ was embarrassed to build a graphic display into the radio, and all information on the screen is displayed in standard symbols. The only available backlight color is emerald (there will be more of these colors in crossovers). The device is a “turn on and listen” device, and in standby mode the display displays the time.
The fact that the manufacturer placed the USB port right on the face of the radio is not bad. Now owners have the opportunity to quickly connect a USB drive, or use the standard port as a power source. It will be easy to connect a smartphone or tablet and place it on the dashboard. This is cool! It is recommended to immediately install a short USB flash drive into the USB port to protect it from dust. And it’s also advisable to occupy the port intended for SD cards with something.
All radios produced by Itelma LLC are well aware of a file system such as FAT32. This means that you need to format flash drives in it, onto which audio files in MP3 and WAV format will then be recorded. The signal to the speakers standardly installed in the doors comes without distortion, and the power of the built-in amplifiers is unlikely to seem insufficient to anyone. Enjoy it for your health.
We can state the fact that the new head unit developed by AvtoVAZ turned out to be more than twice cheaper than the touch media center. So, there is no need to succumb to the persuasion of sellers to buy a 7900010-40 radio for 10, 8 or 6 thousand rubles. However, we will leave the choice to the owner.
First impressions
At first glance at the radio, you can say that it fits harmoniously into the interior of the car. There is nothing superfluous that would raise questions from a design point of view. The build quality is pleasing; it is worth noting the smooth, smooth movement of the buttons, the absence of backlash and the plastic of the radio that is pleasant to the touch. The radio backlight is green.
The radio is turned on by pressing a special button in the upper left corner of the radio. Loading occurs within a few seconds, during which the inscription “Lada Kalina” is briefly displayed on the display.

Also, in some Pioneer radios, you can call up the clock settings menu by simultaneously pressing the CLOCK + FUNC keys or by going to the SYSTEM item and finding the corresponding sub-items CLOCK SET/CLOCK OFF, which is located in the main settings block.
How to change language
To change the settings language, go to the system settings (SYSTEM), located in the main settings block, which may require holding down the SRC or SOURCE buttons. After this, we find the LANGUAGE sub-item, where we select the language we need.
Radio capabilities
On the right side of the radio there is a USB connector, which is designed to connect:
- USB Flash card (USB 2.0 and 3.0 up to 64 GB);
- USB Flash player with a memory capacity of at least 1024 MB;
- USB HDD with FAT32 file system;
- Mobile phone (only in charging mode).
On the left side of the radio there is a slot for SD cards. SD Memory Card Slot: Supports SD, SDHC cards of size 32 X 24 X 2.1 mm. SDHC up to 32 GB, SD up to 32 GB.

The Kalina 2 and Granta radio has its own battery, which allows you to save user settings after disconnecting the battery for 10 days.
Control your cell phone and view photos
There are no problems viewing photos on the device; you just need to press the required menu button. Slight delays may occur when scrolling through high-resolution images. They have a fairly large volume (over 10 MB), so it takes a few fractions of a second to load them into the radio’s memory. You can view photos downloaded from your cell phone.
All functions related to device management are located in the “Phone” menu item. After your cell phone is connected, configured and saved in memory via Bluetooth, you can control calls using the Granta's standard radio. It is very convenient to use the buttons on the display, which are clearly visible and at hand, instead of using your cell phone on the go.
You can talk by speakerphone or using a Hands free headset. You can also load your phone book into the radio's memory for convenience. In the same way, you can play music that is stored in the device’s memory, controlling the process exclusively using the LCD display. You can simply put your cell phone in a convenient place in the car and not touch it until the very end of the trip.

Let us remind you that AvtoVAZ installs radios with an LCD display on the “Lux” configuration.
A few words about the radio of the “normal Kalina-2”
When looking at the “device”, which AvtoVAZ designates with the numbers 2190-7900010-40, it immediately becomes clear that installing such a device in a standard 1DIN compartment will not work. VAZ cars in the “Norma” configuration come from the factory with an empty compartment (its height is 1DIN), and in the “Norma+” radio tape recorder occupies the entire central part of the console. That is, the owner has the following choice: you can install a standard VAZ radio, but then the easy-to-use shelf will disappear, or you can look for and install a unit of standard height. The VAZ radio does not fit into the 1DIN high compartment. There is no touch screen on it, but under the “twist” there is a whole array of plastic buttons.
VAZ push-button radio for Kalina-2
Such a radio, as we see in the photo, can be found in the only configuration of the Kalina Cross. The “device” in question differs from the Granta radio in the presence of a frame with holes. There were rumors about the release of specific units intended only for crossovers, but in the end everything turned out to be simpler - VAZ always ordered radio tape recorders from Itelma, and this tradition was continued. What exactly is offered as part of the “budget” head unit? Let's try to figure it out.
First of all, let's say that the main task of a built-in radio is to play music. To do this, it provides two hardware ports (USB, SD) located on the front panel. Radio stations can be switched using the lower buttons, and the device can also perform the functions of a Bluetooth headset - it’s not for nothing that there are “Receive” and “End End” buttons. The amplifier power is standard, the number of channels is four.
Review of standard luxury radio Lada Granta
The text is based on reviews from car enthusiasts who have a standard luxury radio (2 din) in their Lada Granta. So, Itelm's radio tape recorder runs on WinCE 6.0.0.3. and it takes a couple of seconds to turn it on.
Screen . Bright, sensitive, resistive (capacitive ones work very poorly in cold weather, while resistive ones are better in this regard, and are able to work in more difficult conditions, but working with them is not as convenient as with capacitive ones). The picture has ordinary color rendering (there can be no comparison with LED panels), but is quite readable in the sun. A couple of shots in bright weather: USB . Supported file systems: FAT16, FAT32. There is a USB button in the radio menu, but there is no connector on the front panel. In fact, there is a USB connector, and it is located on the back of the radio, wrapped in dark foam rubber, and was not wound with other wires. Some dealers deny the presence of USB. By the way, in the glove compartment itself, there is an empty window for the USB connector.
SD cards . We tested an 8GB memory card and there were no problems identifying or playing music. The manufacturer warns: The USB and SD connectors are designed for connecting SD cards and USB flash drives. Connecting other devices may damage the radio or the connected device.
Hands free . The standard radio of the Lada Granta even has such a function as pairing with a phone via bluetooth. We managed to connect a couple of phones (android 2.1 and WM 6.5), but you have to wait to load the phone book. In addition, you can play audio via bluetooth. However, it’s difficult to call the work of the phone-radio combination stable, and remembering two phones on the list is a whole epic. Video . Supported format WMV 320*240. We tried to play a video in AVI 720p format, but the car radio couldn't handle it. The picture slows down a lot and lags behind the sound. Thus, to view higher format videos, you will need to use a converter (for example, Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate).
Audio . Supported formats are MP3, WMA and WAV. The sound quality is not bad. The sound is clear, pleasant, without audible cuts in the highs or lows. The screen displays information about the album, artist, and also shows the album cover, if available. There is an equalizer in which you will find several preset “presets” such as Jazz, Rock, Voice, etc.
Photo . There is support for viewing photos. Supported formats: JPEG, .JPG, .JPE, .BMP, GIF, .PNG. If a 1MB 800x1397px photo takes 1 second to open, then a 1978x3456px, 7MB photo will load the radio for as much as 9 seconds.
Antenna . The 2 din Granta radio comes complete with an antenna that is mounted on the roof of the car. When listening to FM radio channels, it happens that the sound volume fluctuates, the antenna is to blame.
Settings.
- General settings (screen saver that only works with the radio, factory reset, language settings, date settings, clock settings).
- Phone settings
- Sound settings
- Display settings
- Photo viewing settings
- Video player settings
- Radio settings
Unfortunately, an operating manual for the luxury radio , but learning it at random was not a problem, especially since the interface is in Russian.
(Media system instructions (2190-7900010)). There is no option to connect a rear view camera.
The standard speakers are 13 cm, obviously weak for a luxury radio, so it is recommended to install speakers in the rear doors and replace the existing ones. Installing soundproofing will make the sound in the cabin even clearer.
In conclusion, we can say that you shouldn’t expect much from the Granta luxury radio; it is still far from a full-fledged multimedia system. The slow processor (even though it is declared Dual Core), the meager amount of RAM memory (128MB), the lack of AV output and navigation are upsetting. The positive aspects include a simple and intuitive interface, support for USB and SD memory cards and the ability to play video clips (albeit only in a strictly limited format, but the option itself is quite rare). The good news is that AvtoVAZ has work in this direction, and this means a lot.
Other features of standard multimedia
The general feelings of owners who have a standard radio in their car are positive. The display is informative and easy to read. The touch keyboard functions flawlessly. The standard radio itself is capable of high-quality reproduction of sound programs from micro-SD cards. However, using USB format media can be challenging.
The device also has some nice options:
- equalizer;
- activated replay mode;
- random sequence of playing tracks (“Random”).
Multimedia LADA Granta is capable of supporting images in 5 formats, which allows you to view photos without any problems. But not everyone can make the correct settings for the “phone” option on the first try. This function will be convenient for a busy owner who is forced to communicate by telephone even while on the road.
Installing a radio in a Lada Granta with your own hands. Advice from the experts
Since the beginning of 2011, all Lada Granta models have been manufactured with audio preparation: factory radios and receivers. The quality of reception and sound is not always at the highest level due to its cheapness and simplicity. When purchasing a Lada Grant from the showroom, the owner receives audio preparation, acoustic wires, and installed electrical wiring.
The door panels have already prepared openings for installing speakers. True, few people use the standard seat, as they prefer the rear shelf to improve the sound.
What can and should be configured in the equipment of this company
Depending on the model of the audio recorder, the user has the ability to independently adjust parameters such as:
- equalizer;
- radio stations;
- menu language;
- time;
- enable or disable the Bluetooth wireless protocol (if available) and AUX;
- activation/deactivation of demo mode, etc.
Among all that has been said, special attention should be paid to setting the equalizer, as well as the radio, where the first is useful for those who like to listen to their own music, and the second for car owners who prefer radio stations to music from a disk/flash drive. Special adjustments are also required for the subwoofer.
Choosing the right radio size
We carry out installation either independently or by contacting specialists at the service center. In the second case, the service is paid.
By default, all VAZ and Lada models are equipped with a 1-DIN radio. The opening dimensions correspond to: 180 x 50 mm. This is an old standardization that has been in force since the times of the USSR. Modern audio modules can be purchased complete with a pre-installed LCD display. The size of the opening must comply with the standard: 180 x 100 mm, that is, doubled in height. Size marking: 2-DIN.
To install the radio in the Granta liftback, cut out the top pocket, remove the plastic, and install the assembled module. For a beginner, the process will seem somewhat complicated, so strictly follow the instructions.
Video: “deep” settings menu + disabling DEMO mode + disabling time
Turn off the demo
To disable the demo mode, turn off the car radio, and then turn it on again by long pressing the SRC button (maybe the SOURCE button), after which we get to the start settings menu, where using the joystick or the right-left buttons we find the DEMO ON sub-item, and then change it parameter to OFF.
How to adjust the bass
To adjust the bass level, you need to switch the rear speakers to subwoofer mode, which is described in detail in subparagraph 1. Also, to obtain richer bass, correct adjustment of low frequencies through the equalizer, as well as activation of the BASS BOOST function, which is disabled by default, can help. To do this, turn off and then turn on the radio using the SRC (SOURCE) button, and go to the preset menu, where we look for the BASS BOOST sub-item, after which we activate it.
Depending on the Pioneer audio recorder used in the car, there may be other parameters, which you can familiarize yourself with by carefully reading the instructions for the device, which is included in the kit or can be downloaded via the Internet.
How to connect a Lada Granta head unit with a 1-DIN connector
- We carry out the work inside the car, having previously disconnected the terminals from the battery in order to prevent a short circuit in the circuit;
- We remove the plastic partition - pocket. It covers the hole, preventing objects from falling inside the torpedo. We use a flat-head screwdriver to unscrew the bolts;
- Two ISO plugs are visible behind the partition body. These types of wire terminals are manufactured in accordance with international automotive standards. More than 98% of all automakers use the standard when equipping technical equipment;
- We remove the metal frame - the block - from the body of the audio unit and place it in the cavity of the torpedo.
- We first connect the blocks with wires. Fitting into the connectors is accompanied by a characteristic click;
- We insert the module into the metal frame.
Note to the driver. Incorrect terminal connections result in a short circuit. To ensure the safety of the connection process, the connectors have guides that allow you to install the block in only one position.
High pass filter
Next we find the HPF (High-passFilter) item. This is a high-pass filter that cuts the frequency of the sound supplied to the speakers below their specified limit value. This is done because it is very difficult for standard speakers (13–16 cm) to reproduce low frequencies due to their small diaphragm diameter and low power. As a result, the sound is reproduced with distortion even at low volumes. By cutting the low frequencies, you can get clear sound over a larger volume range.
If you do not have a subwoofer, we recommend installing an HPF filter at a frequency of 50 or 63 Hz.
You can then exit the menu using the return button and check the result. It is better to do this at a volume of 30.
If the sound quality is not satisfactory, or if you are outdoors and want to have a loud disco, you can raise the lower limit from 80–120 Hz or more. It is recommended to use the same level of boundary cut if you have a subwoofer. These measures will allow you to increase the purity and volume of the reproduced sound.
There is also an adjustment for the frequency attenuation rate. On Pioneer it comes in two positions - 12 and 24 dB per octave. We advise you to set this indicator to 24 dB.
Common mistakes when installing a standard Granta liftback radio with your own hands
- when connecting additional terminals, manual twisting of wires is used instead of classical soldering;
- regular insulating tape is used on connections instead of heat-resistant sleeves;
- Incorrect connection of a large number of speakers on one branch leads to overload, heating, and short circuit.
Installing a sound amplifier
By liftback radio amplifier we mean:
- crossover installation;
- subwoofer installation.
The choice is up to the owner of the Lada Grant, as different goals are pursued: cleanliness, sound quality. Obviously, the cost of equipment will also increase. Crossovers are installed in the cavity of the glove box, since their dimensions do not exceed 100 x 150 mm and are rectangular in shape. Subwoofers are fixed in the luggage compartment. Equipment requires more space.
Connection of an external device is carried out strictly in accordance with the operating instructions:
- brown wire color: responsible for the operation of the system;
- black: power supply to equipment;
- yellow: audio module activation;
- red: settings and programming.
At the very end, do not forget to connect a red wire with a pre-installed fuse to the positive terminal of the battery. It directly connects the amplifier (subwoofer) to the current source.
Installing two speakers in the front doors
- dismantle the door card, handle, control unit;
- We compare the standard cutouts for the speakers with the actual dimensions. If necessary, expand with a file or fine sandpaper. It is strictly forbidden to use cutting objects, as there is a high risk of damage to the plastic of the door card;
- we check for the absence of roughness in the hole, install the speaker, fix it, connect the standard terminals with wiring;
- we check the operation of the speaker, install the door card, and fix the metal grille to protect the speaker from mechanical damage.
Working in audio mode
The device allows you to listen to songs in the three most common formats. At the same time, according to reviews from Lada owners, the sound in the cabin is of average quality. The fact is that the 13 cm speakers built into the front doors of the car do not reproduce music very well due to the fact that they are a budget option. The radio itself has nothing to do with it.
Experts recommend buying a set of new good quality speakers and installing them in the rear and front doors; structurally, such a possibility exists. It is possible to connect an amplifier and a subwoofer to the standard radio. This is done in a certain order. After successfully carrying out the above activities, listening to music in the Lada Granta salon will bring you real pleasure.
- Stretch and connect a thick red power wire (“plus”) from the battery to the amplifier.
- The black wire is the negative wire. Connect it to the amplifier and lead it to the car body.
- Hidden the wires for connecting the speakers and subwoofer and connect them to the amplifier.
- Run a wire from the amplifier to the radio. This wiring should be routed separately from other vehicle wiring to avoid interference with the sound.
- Connect the wire from the amplifier to the radio.
Characteristics of the standard radio "Lada Grants Liftback"
The radio for the Lada Granta liftback is supplied as standard equipment. Product in 2-DIM format (100 x 180 mm).
In addition to the classic radio, there is a built-in card reader, Bluetooth, and a USB output for connecting flash drives. The only disadvantage of the audio module is that it is a push-button type. Which is not to the liking of many car enthusiasts, which is why they install more modern modifications.
During the startup of the audio module, a greeting from Lada Kalina 2 is displayed. This is not an error, as many owners think. This type of audio was originally developed for the Lada Kalina 2. Obviously, the manufacturer did not change anything and started production for the Granta. Installation/disassembly of the module is somewhat complicated due to the tight fit, so be prepared for this.
It is based on the Windows operating system, which allows you to connect to the World Wide Web via a 3G modem. There is no such option out of the box; you first need to reflash the device, but more on that later.
Via Bluetooth, it is possible to connect to a phone, and the “hands-free” option is activated. Which is very convenient and practical when driving. The owners were also pleased with the stock radio. At first glance it looks simple, but it turns out not to be so. Available programming function for a specific channel on a given topic.
For example, as soon as a news broadcast comes on, the radio automatically switches to the programmed channel. The audio module reads the following formats: MP3, WMA, WAV, WMV. Control of the standard radio of the Lada Granta liftback is accessible and intuitive, even for an inexperienced owner.
Specifications and overview of device functions
We should start with the fact that the manufacturer of the radio with an LCD display is domestic, this is NPP Itelma, Moscow. The company produces and supplies its products (electronics and digital equipment) to the largest automotive enterprises in Russia. Multimedia system MMC 2190, catalog number 2190-7900010-00 for Granta, is an updated device with a new processor and transistor stage. The production of old products with number 2190-7900010 has been discontinued, and it is not possible to buy them. The technical characteristics of the radio are presented in Table 1.

Note: The kit includes an antenna designed for installation on the roof of a vehicle.
The standard radio has a resistive screen, which, unlike a capacitive screen, works better at low temperatures, although it is inferior in ease of use. The controls are completely touch-sensitive, with the exception of the puck that regulates the sound. The central panel also has buttons for quick mute and mode switching, which is very convenient in various situations. The main menu of the device consists of 6 items:
To tune in and reliably receive FM radio stations, there are 4 playlists; in addition, it is possible to receive signals from radio stations operating in the AM range. This function may seem useless if you are in a city or more or less large settlement.
However, in the periphery, there are not FM transmitting stations everywhere, and signals from AM radio stations are present everywhere and can be listened to. You can tune in to a specific station either manually or automatically.
All these functions can be implemented by clicking on the “Radio” menu button. The antenna for receiving FM signals that comes with the device, according to reviews, has flaws in its design. While driving, the sound volume fluctuates when listening to the radio, so some car enthusiasts purchase an additional antenna.
You can watch the video on the radio of your Lada Granta car by pressing the corresponding menu button. The device plays the most popular AVI video file format with great difficulty and the picture lags behind the voice acting. This is due to the small amount of RAM and insufficient processor performance. However, if you use a desktop computer and a converter, the film can be converted to WMV 320x240 format (Windows Media Player) and watched in a car with fairly decent quality.
How to flash the firmware
- Buy an SD card, format it in FAT, exFAT format;
- We download the firmware for free on the manufacturer’s official website;
- We save the data in the root directory of the SD card;
- We insert the SD card into the slot on the radio, start it, wait for the update to finish;
- Turn on and off the module;
- We customize the new interface for ourselves.
If the firmware is installed incorrectly, additional screen calibration using the CAN bus will be required. It is impossible to do this yourself, only in a service station. After successful flashing, the following is available:
- graphic equalizer;
- viewing photos, pictures, videos;
- improved sound quality;
- possibility of installing a navigation system.
Disadvantages of a standard radio
- Outdated firmware from the “box”;
- Not all options are initially available;
- The need for periodic software updates;
- Push-button interface.

Pioneer
If you are wondering how to set up the radio on your Pioneer radio, don’t worry, setup is very easy. When automatically setting up the Pioneer, press FUNC, followed by BSM. To start searching for radio channels, press the right or up button; after finishing, the music of the first radio station found will turn on.
For manual installation in BAND mode, long press >>|. A search will be launched for any first station within this radius. After which the device will stop scanning and start playing the found station. Then you will need to save it; to do this, hold the key with the desired number for a long time. If you do not need the found station, you need to press the right key and hold it. Scanning will continue until a new station is found.
With this function, you can store up to 6 stations in the first bank. After this manipulation, press the BAND button and get into the second bank, it is shown on the display as F2. In the second bank, you can similarly store up to 6 stations in memory, and there is also a third bank. Most often there are three banks, but there are more. As a result, if you have three banks, you will have 18 stations active and saved. Now you know how to set up the radio on your Pioneer radio.
Setting up the radio in the Sony radio will also not be a problem. Searching for stations is usually carried out in two common ways: manually or automatically. Automatic memorization of radio stations:
- Turn on the radio. Long press the Source button and wait until TUNER appears on the display.
- The range is changed by pressing the Mode button. If you press the joystick, a menu of options will appear.
- Rotate the joystick until the VTM option appears. Radio channels are assigned to numbered keys as standard.
The radio does not work without the ignition
We will start with the very case in which problems arise. That is, the recommended case for connecting a radio from the manufacturer. Take a look at the diagram. Everything is very simple and clear. Two wires for power. At the same time, the yellow one is power and provides power to the memory, and the red one is the control one. To turn on the amplifier stages in the radio when it is running. If the red one is left on constantly, along with the yellow one, then the radio will not go into energy-saving mode and, of course, all this will end badly for your battery. That's why red is turned off through the ignition switch. But as we already understood, this does not suit us. This means we come up with another circuit that would ensure operation when the ignition is turned off. Take a look at this option.
This solution cannot but please the eye and mind if you know how to read diagrams. And if not, then we will now tell you what is happening here. Actually, we turn on the ignition, voltage is supplied to the red and yellow wires, which means the radio can be turned on. At the same time, power is also taken from the radio from the blue wire. This is power for an amplifier or active antenna. You can find out where to get all these wires by looking at the ISO connectors in the article “How to connect a radio in a car.” The result is self-pickup, through diodes that converge according to the circuit and are connected to the control voltage. That is, the radio will power its control wire itself, even if the voltage from the ignition switch suddenly disappears. This is very similar to a self-pickup relay circuit. Well, in the end, the algorithm works like this. Turn on the ignition and turn on the radio. Everything is working! We arrive, turn off the ignition, everything works! We turn off the radio and that's it, it turns off. In this case, it will not turn on again until we turn on the ignition and turn it on with the power button.
Actually, such a scheme and such an algorithm are quite pragmatic. For most motorists, you can stop there. However, let’s also fantasize about the convenience of powering the radio. Let's say we forgot to turn off the radio, or we just don't want to bother ourselves with this, but we just get out of the car, set it to the alarm and our radio turns off. In this case, the possibility of turning on appears again when we remove the car from the alarm system and turn on the ignition. The end result is something like this.
What to do
You can remove interference from the radio yourself, the main thing is to be able to work with electronic devices.
To do this you will need a minimum of spare parts and simple tools. You can eliminate interference as follows:
- Replace the antenna cable with another one or make a shielded braid. With such protection, the antenna will not pick up extraneous radio waves.
- A cheap radio of poor quality also serves as a source of noise. To eliminate them, it is enough to change the equipment to a good quality model.
- Elimination of interference can be done by replacing the switching power supply of the recorder with a linear model.
- Sometimes a ferrite ring installed on the power cable helps solve the problem. Ferrite rings (cylinders) are sold in all specialized stores. They are selected according to the cable diameter. The rings are installed in two places: near the adapter and the DVR power plug. In this case, the cable is pulled 3-4 times through the ring.
- Extraneous noise in the radio can be minimized if the elements of the recorder and antenna are placed at the maximum distance from each other.
- Installing a stabilizer also helps solve the problem.
- If the DVR is connected not to the cigarette lighter, but to the on-board network of the car, then the interference will disappear, because most of them occur due to the power supply. Technically, this is difficult to do, and not every beginner will be able to integrate the device into the car’s power system. Therefore, for those who have never done this type of work, it is better to turn to specialists. Otherwise, incorrect installation will lead to breakdown of the entire system.
Before you take on complex work, changing the power supply or the design of the gadget, you first need to try simpler methods for eliminating noise on the radio.
How to improve radio reception in your car
...Probably everyone has noticed on the cables of monitors, printers, video cameras and other computer equipment, a ferrite cylinder in a plastic sheath.
What is it for?
A ferrite cylinder is a shield that protects against electromagnetic interference and interference: it prevents the signal transmitted through the cable from being distorted by an external electromagnetic field, and also prevents the radiation of the electromagnetic field (interference) from the cable into the external environment.
What is the principle of protection based on?
Internal and external cables of computer equipment can act as miniature antennas as they convert so-called voltage and current noise into electromagnetic radiation.
Reasons for radio loss
First of all, car owners begin to check the power cable. As a rule, it is routed on the left side of the driver, and the interconnect wires are routed on the right side. The speaker wiring, located on the left side of the car, is routed along with the power cable and radio antenna.
Interference when turning on the radio ignition
And indeed, if you mess up the connection of interconnect wires in the connectors, then noise and interference cannot be avoided.
Often the problem is caused by the subwoofer. If it is de-energized, everything returns to normal.
No exception is the power supply of the head unit. Again, incorrect connection of the speaker system. As a rule, the power cable should go to the amplifier separately, and the other power cable should go to the power unit separately, with the obligatory insertion of a fuse near the battery. And, of course, the car radio should be grounded to prevent interference.
If everything is fine with the wiring and interconnects, doubt automatically falls on the amplifier. It is quite possible that the rulers on the sound amplification device have burned out. It will help to check the installation of a known-good amplifier. If the noise disappears, then the only thing left to do is buy and install a new amplifier.
Low pass filter (subwoofer)
After we have dealt with the speakers, we will configure the radio for the subwoofer. For this we need a low pass filter. With its help, we match the frequencies of the speakers and subwoofer.
The situation looks like this. When we removed the bass from the speakers (set HPF to 80+), we got loud and high-quality sound. The next step is to “dock” the subwoofer to our speakers. To do this, go to the menu, select the audio item, and in it we find the subwoofer control section.
There are three meanings here:
- The first number is the cutoff frequency of the subwoofer. Everything here is the same as with the equalizer. There are simply no specific settings, and the range in which you can “play around” is from 63 to 100 Hz.
- The next number is the volume of our subwoofer. We think everything is simple here, you can make the subwoofer louder or quieter relative to the acoustics, the scale is from -6 to +6.
- The next figure is the frequency attenuation slope. Just like in HPF, it can be either 12 or 24. There is also a little advice here: if you set a high cut, then set the slope to 24, if lower, then you can set it to 12 or 24.
The sound quality depends not only on the settings of your audio system, but also on what speakers you have installed. If you want to replace them, we recommend that you read the article “what you need to know when choosing car speakers”
The sensor or display does not work
If the display on the radio does not work, you need to look for internal faults. The cable connecting the screen to the main modules is often disconnected. Only a specialist can fix the problem. You should not disassemble the device yourself, as this can make the situation worse. Due to the displacement of the cable, the operation of the sensor may be disrupted.
If the sensor on the radio does not work, you can use the remote control to perform the necessary operations. Incorrect installation of the panel may also cause the touchscreen or screen to malfunction. Testing the device in a service center will help you understand why the radio does not work.
Other problems
Problems with reading storage media arise no less often than difficulties with turning on. You can eliminate them yourself.
No sound or noise
This problem can be caused by several reasons, the most common of which are:
- No signal. In this case, the sound disappears or loses volume. Checking the high-level pulse supplied by the fourth pin of IC901 helps solve the problem. If there is no signal, the controller must be replaced. If the sound disappears when you start the engine and adjust the volume, you need to inspect the amplifier contacts.
- No voltage at the base. In this case, the sound fades or disappears completely when you try to increase the volume. This problem is determined by checking the bases with a voltmeter. If the tested parameter is zero, the transistors must be replaced.
- The Mute button is broken. The change in sound quality in this case is due to a controller malfunction. If you have problems with volume control, you need to check transistor Q802.
- Amplifier chips burn out. If there is no sound, you need to inspect all the cables connecting this module to the tape recorder. Repair involves replacing capacitors and microcircuits.
Does not read the disk, flash drive or the disk is stuck
When using the car radio, the following problems with reading information may occur:
Additional signal amplifier
In some regions, even a working, powerful radio system has poor signal reception, since local transmitters and repeaters are either low-power or located far away. In this situation, a weak radio will find it very difficult to pick up the radio signal.
An additional signal amplifier solves the problem. It enhances the amplitude of received radio waves and makes reception stable. But keep in mind that if the main radio equipment of the car is of poor quality, or the geolocation is unsuccessful (in a lowland, surrounded by high-rise buildings, in close proximity to other sources of radio interference), it is unlikely to help you.
To prevent the radio system from malfunctioning, you should handle the equipment correctly, check it regularly, do not leave it turned on in the cabin overnight, remove dust and dirt if necessary, clean it and replace worn out parts in a timely manner.
In conclusion, we note that the car’s radio system is quite simple - it includes an antenna on a holder, a connecting wire and a radio with a radio tuner. If suddenly the quality of radio signal reception in the car is disrupted, malfunctions, interference, and loss of sound begin - the reasons may be mechanical (the equipment constantly operates in extreme conditions, in dust, in any weather, and under high vibration loads).
If no damage is found in the devices themselves, you should look for internal damage or misconfigurations. The easiest way is to completely replace the radio system by installing a high-quality, latest generation radio and a new external receiving antenna. You can also give the equipment to specialists for testing and repair.
When the ignition is turned on, the radio on the car radio disappears
When you turn on the ignition, the radio disappears. As a rule, this problem does not arise much at first. The radio hisses faintly only at high volumes; at low and medium volumes it is not annoying. Gradually, everything becomes more serious: as soon as the ignition is turned on, irritating noises and interference in the speakers begin to appear, nothing works. What can you do if the radio disappears when you turn on the ignition?
