Painting the Niva with a raptor is a wise decision. Especially if you use a car for safari, trips to the forest, or travel. This coating will reliably protect the car body from minor defects, scratches, and abrasions. The Niva car is considered one of the best creations of our automobile industry. This is the first domestic comfortable jeep, which has been produced for almost 40 years. It was even exported to different countries. The car never ceases to be popular among the people. After all, Russia is a country of “fun roads” and vast open spaces. The element of this VAZ is off-road and extreme conditions.

The next step was to degrease the car before applying primer (a composition applied as the first layer to a surface prepared for painting or finishing to create reliable adhesion of the top layers).
I insisted on the method of spraying with a spray bottle in order to save time and my hands from technical solvent. My father said this won’t work, it needs to be done manually.
About raptor
The difficult economic situation forces many to do the work with their own hands, there is nothing difficult about it. Saving and acquiring new skills is encouraged now.
The main advantages of this coating:
- ease of cleaning,
- It does not require special care,
- excellent coating strength,
- chemical resistance to many substances,
- friction resistance,
- not afraid of sun rays and rain,
- resists corrosion.
The Raptor also has a list of disadvantages:
- The surface of the body does not look glamorous, it has a shagreen appearance.
- In case of technological violations, chips are possible.
- The body cannot be made shiny.
- Harmful to the body when painting.
Raptor comes to the retail chain in special packaging. The package contains 4 bottles of the main substance. Each has a volume of 0.75 liters. The fifth 1 liter bottle is a hardener. The set is equipped with an anti-gravel gun, which is configured to work primarily with the raptor. And the bottles are adapted to fit a pistol. There are several color options. The owner of the car can come up with the color and shade himself. Instructions, descriptions and safety precautions are written on the packaging. Purchasing from a legal retail chain will protect you from counterfeiting!

The next day, the stage of sanding the primed areas was underway, a sanding machine was used in the process, which I used to remove the paint, with a sanding attachment, but it did not do its job well and I had to do this hellish work manually with 600-grit sandpaper, pouring water on the area and doing circular movements, the primer turned from a rough surface to a smooth one.
Applying paint
Please read the instructions for use carefully. Read it a couple of times, this will minimize possible errors. Mix the coloring component with the hardener in a ratio of three to one. For convenience, the bank usually has measuring marks. This greatly simplifies the process.
After mixing the substance, shake well and mix. This will take a few minutes. The quality of mixing will affect the quality of the coating. You can add a little S2040 thinner to the mixture. This will reduce the surface texture. To speed up the drying process, you can use different types of hardeners.
A spray gun or compressor is screwed onto a can of dye. It is better to start the process from the roof of the car. Movements should be smooth and uniform. Optimal distance from the surface: 45 - 55 centimeters. The layer should lie evenly, without overflow or gaps. It is important to remember that the larger the paint layer, the less durable it is.
The second layer is applied after a break, which can be from 36 to 60 minutes. After the procedure, the body must dry for at least six days. This is necessary for the polymerization process. Although the car can be used within 10-14 hours after completion of the painting work. You just need to avoid stress. Fresh paint can be damaged by precipitation and dirt. The longer the body dries, the better.
Spray gun type
Paint consumption is significantly affected by the design of the spray gun. HVLP spray guns have a high percentage of paint and varnish material transfer to the surface being painted. For high-quality HVLP spray guns, this percentage is at least 75%. When painting with such spray guns, the paint gets onto the part as much as possible, and does not fly to the sides.

From personal experience I can say that when I take high-quality paint in the quantity recommended for painting the parts I need, the paint often remains (sometimes more than half). I paint with an Iwata W‑101 spray gun, purchased from an official representative in Russia. From my own experience I am convinced that a high-quality, economical spray gun significantly reduces paint consumption.

Financial moment
The cost of this DIY job is to purchase supplies, dye, and a small amount of electricity to run the compressor. But if you decide to purposefully buy a compressor for this job, then it is cheaper to turn to professionals. Healthy competition in times of crisis forces us to keep prices within reasonable limits. Otherwise, you may be left without clients at all. Moreover, even a beginner can perform the process at home.
The price of painting one element with raptor in the salon is 1,500 rubles. Much depends on the amount of preparatory work and the need for additional processing of the body. The advantage of the Niva car is its compact size. You need to figure out 15,000 rubles or more for painting the entire car.

Color
Many people are interested in: “How to paint it the right color?” There is a special kit from U-POL Corporation. This is a substance for selecting car colors. You can buy ready-made pigment for coloring. The best person to help you is at the representative office of the company, where they will give you the right advice and instructions for use. Painting follows the same scheme. Raptor is mixed in a ratio of three to one, 10% of the main pigment is added. If difficulties arise, contact a professional colorist. The raptor itself has a natural milky color, which can give a characteristic shade.
When working with this substance, it is important to remember personal protection. The substance irritates the eyes, dries the skin, and may cause loss of consciousness. Open flames are prohibited.

Car painting
Let's look step by step at what it looks like to paint a car in camouflage with your own hands. It is best to carry out work in a well-lit garage, where there is no dust that could interfere with the painting process. Good levels of lighting and ventilation must be provided. After this you can start working:
- We cut out large fragments from the vinyl film and make slits in them, which will later become stains.
- We glue the cut out fragments randomly onto the body, after which we apply a layer of black enamel from an aerosol can onto the cut out areas. We wait for the paint to dry and apply the second layer.
- We paste the film prepared for brown spots. The main condition here is that the brown spots overlap with the previously applied black ones. Apply a layer of enamel from an aerosol can, wait until it dries and apply a second layer.
- We paste stencils for the green color. We observe the same condition: the green spots should overlap with the black and brown ones. It should be borne in mind that green is the lightest color, so we put as many layers as needed so that there is no bleed through of the lower layers.
- After this, we remove all the vinyl from the body and inspect the quality of the paint. If you want to avoid clear boundaries of the spots, you can complete the finishing touches using airbrushing.
Painting the Niva in camouflage with your own hands
After removing the films, remove the newspapers and masking tape. We carefully inspect the entire car. If we see that paint has accidentally spilled onto areas that we did not plan to paint, we carefully remove it with a solvent.
Painter experience
The amount of paint required to paint a car body also depends on the professionalism of the car painter. An experienced painter will set up the paint gun correctly and distribute the paint correctly. The paint should not be applied in the form of dust, but should spread well when it hits the surface. It is wiser to first paint over repair areas and replacement body panels that are a different color than the rest of the body. Then you can proceed to the step-by-step painting of all body parts.

Required tools and materials
It is logical that painting a Niva in camouflage with your own hands will require special tools and materials. So, for the workflow we will need:
- high-quality automotive aerosol enamel: green, brown and black;
- 4 cans of each color;
- vinyl film;
- sponge and polish;
- matte varnish for cars;
- 0.5 liters of solvent grade 469;
- 0.2 liters of gasoline;
- 7 cm painting spatula;
- dry, clean flannel rags;
- kilowatt halogen lamp;
- old newspapers;
- 5 rolls each of narrow and wide masking tape.
After we have stocked up on everything we need, we can begin to prepare the Niva for painting.

Topic: Paint or raptor?
Belaya Niva 2011. Saffron milk caps began to appear, as I understand it, at the factory they paint it without a primer at all, right on top of the metal or what? I'm thinking of painting it, but I don't know what would be better.

Re: Paint or raptor?
Strip the paint off the entire car down to the metal?

Re: Paint or raptor?
Ideally, I think the body should be sandblasted. Otherwise, these saffron milk caps will be under the raptor, but they won’t be visible. And the body will simply rust.

Re: Paint or raptor?
The painting itself is more expensive. If the goal is to remove rust, then these are rather questions about preparing for painting.
Can you tell me more about preparation? Does old paint need to be stripped down to bare metal?

+100500 I'm the same garbage, I didn't understand the joke. This coating was originally intended for interior body treatment of pickup trucks. Accordingly, it is resistant to small impacts, scratches are not so visible, and that’s probably all.

Sandblast more to completely remove pockets of corrosion. There is no need to peel off paint in places where there is no rust or putty.

Thank you, otherwise I was thinking that the whole car needs to be stripped of paint, then the whole car needs to be primed, and then painted. from Savely’s ...

Re: Paint or raptor?
No, well, stripping an entire car is not an acquired taste. And sandblasting is not a cheap pleasure these days. It’s just that no preparation gives the same effect as sandblasting. True, there are also 3M discs. They also remove rust and paint very well. You put it in the drill and off you go. The effect is very good in the fight against rust. It knocks down to metal and out of shells as well. Well then, respectively, primer and paint. I don’t know what these things are called correctly, but they are available in body repair shops.

Re: Paint or raptor?
So, as I understand it, there are 2 options for preparing for painting:
- the first, in which the entire car is stripped, then the whole thing is primed and painted. - the second, in which only problem areas are peeled and cleaned.
It is best to do this with sandblasting, or with 3-m discs mounted on a drill.

Here's the second option. I passed the first one in my UAZ, but there was no other way. It’s better not to, it takes nerves and time. Clean up problem areas first with this disc, then with sandpaper. Prime and paint locally or completely. But if you paint completely, then you need to matte the entire car with sandpaper.

Re: Paint or raptor?
The most important thing is to remove the rust so that it no longer creeps out from under the coating.

How did the distribution of this coverage begin?
Raptor was originally designed to protect concrete and wood surfaces to provide a protective coating against moisture. But high adhesion and constant improvement of the material have made it possible to use the paint on almost any coating.
There are several main advantages that self-processing of a car with Raptor provides:
- The paint does not fade in the sun
- Resistant to oil and other chemicals
- It is easy to remove dust and dirt from the surface
- When applied correctly, it avoids corrosion
One of the disadvantages is the appearance of the coating. Raptor produces a matte, rough surface reminiscent of an orange peel. This should be taken into account before painting, since this effect cannot be avoided due to the special structure of the material. It is prohibited to use other materials on top of the Raptor or polish the surface.
You should also follow the painting application technology to avoid the formation of coating defects and chips in the future.
How much does it cost to prepare a Niva for off-road use?
Hello to all mud lovers. Today I decided to figure out how much money Nivovod will need to prepare his Niva for off-road use. There are several stages of preparation and we will consider each separately.
Well, let’s start with the wheels, because driving a stock Kama through mud is somehow impractical or something. For the Niva, you need appropriate shoes. And here is the first nuance - what you will do in the future depends on the choice of tires.
If you install a little more than the standard one, but don’t intend to modify anything in the car, then in terms of size then it’s quite possible to set it to 205/70/R15 with a price tag of 3,300 rubles per cylinder. True, you will also have to buy 15″ wheels; they will cost 1,100 rubles apiece. In total, to install good 15-inch mud tires on a Niva, you will need 17,600 rubles. With a spare tire - under 20k.
Then we narrow the bar and take simpler tires - Kama Flame size 205/70R16 - their price tag is also about 3300 rubles per cylinder, but on wheels the savings will be 4400. However, know that the Korda’s cross-country ability is exactly 2 times better than the Flame’s. It has more teeth, the tread is more aggressive.
Next - if you want cooler, then you need to take 29″ tires - size 235/75/R15. However, before installing them, you will have to properly prepare the car itself, and this will not be cheap. See:
To install 29-inch tires on the Niva, you will need to cut the arches. In principle, you can get by with one sharp cut, but it is better to also make a 5 cm lift, then in the maximum diagonals there will be nothing to rub anywhere. You can cut the arches yourself, fortunately there are a lot of video instructions.
