How to replace the VAZ-2109 heater cables with your own hands

The VAZ-2109 interior is heated by warm air heated by a radiator. There are times when the heating system in a car begins to work poorly and does not properly heat the interior space. The reason may lie in a failed radiator or pipes, but sometimes, in order to solve problems with heating the interior, you need to replace the heater valve cables.

Replacing the cables of a VAZ heater is not an easy task, but it is quite doable on your own.

Removing the speedometer

To determine the cause of incorrect readings or their absence and to replace the VAZ 2109 speedometer cable if necessary, in any case you will have to remove the speedometer. Let's consider the procedure if the speedometer in your car is round, for example from a VAZ 2106, as in the photo below:

Round device like on a VAZ2106

  • To remove a speedometer of this type, you must remove the front panel of the instrument panel
  • First, unscrew the two bolts securing the plastic linings on the steering column, then alternately remove the lower and then the upper parts of the linings
  • During this procedure, we remove the sealing ring from the ignition switch; it is important not to forget to install it back during assembly.
  • On the front panel (its lower part) there are two recesses, at the same level as the steering column. They have holes through which we gain access to the brackets securing the panel
  • We pry off the panel by inserting two flat (slotted) screwdrivers into them
  • If these holes are covered with film or factory-made polymer, you just need to poke them out with a screwdriver, awl or knife
  • The instrument panel will easily come out of the seat, providing free access to the speedometer and the place where the VAZ 2109 speedometer cable is attached

Cable location

The cables are located at the heater tap and are attached to it with a latch. To get to them, you will need to completely disassemble the dashboard.

They are usually changed for several reasons, usually these are problems with the tap, which lead to failure of the cables:

  1. The heater tap turned sour and the cable fastening broke off, making it impossible to open it. Thus, warm air does not penetrate into the cabin.
  2. The faucet is leaking and the valve is not working - this is a serious problem and requires prompt intervention. If you don't catch it in time, the coolant can leak into the cabin and ruin the carpet on the floor.

Why do breakdowns occur?

As noted above, the shut-off valves of the heater are a very vulnerable element of the VAZ-2109. If it fails, then it will not be possible to ignore the breakdown. First of all, on the floor, at the base of the passenger seat in the first row, a puddle forms under the carpet. In addition, leaking antifreeze emits a very characteristic odor, which should also suggest a malfunction of the stove.

Leakage occurs for three main reasons:

  • use of low-quality cranes by a domestic automaker;
  • oxidation;
  • mechanical destruction.

The Volzhsky plant supplies its products with membrane-type locking fittings. This system has one inherent drawback - poor tightness. Even with careful use, such taps break very quickly.

The second malfunction occurs due to the fact that the heating system is not used for at least 4-5 months a year. This period is quite enough for the valve casing and moving elements to become covered with sediment. As a result, his insides literally stick together. The owner of the car makes a significant effort to open it, and as a result the unit simply collapses. That is, a third type of breakdown occurs.

Diagnostics of the operation of the VAZ 2114 stove cables

In order to inspect the valve cable of the VAZ 2114 stove, you need to dismantle the side panel trim on the driver's side (to the right of the gas pedal). Further details:

  • Start and warm up the car engine thoroughly.
  • Unscrew the three side trim mounting bolts.

  • Turn your gaze towards the heater valve.

  • Check to see if the cable has come loose from the faucet.
  • Move the heater lever on the instrument panel to maximum heating mode.
  • Pull the cable towards you and hold it in this position
  • Check if hot air is coming from the deflectors.

Now that the source of the problem has been identified. It is required to fix, give constant tension and thereby ensure good operation and correct throughput.

One of the options for increasing the tension is a method in which a part (0.5-1 centimeter) of the cable is bent at the point of direct connection to the heater lever. To do this you will need:

  1. Remove the second trim, only from the passenger seat side.
  2. Take pliers and pull the cable towards you (at this moment, the temperature switch should be at maximum heating mode).
  3. Bend the additional amount of cable formed (its amount is selected experimentally, and in each specific case it differs and, as a rule, amounts to 0.5 centimeters).
  4. We hook it up to the temperature switch of the stove.

Attention! To avoid damage, perform all tension-related actions carefully and do not use excessive force. If you overdo it with tension, you can damage the system and the functionality of the heating system.

What to do if the VAZ 2109 stove blows cold air. Modernization of a standard stove

The cold weather has arrived, and most owners of the VAZ 2109 are once again faced with a problem: from the nozzles of the heater pipes at the operating temperature of the coolant (about 90 degrees), barely warm, and often completely cold air is blowing into the cabin; in short, the heater does not heat well. In this state of affairs, in severe frost, even frosty side windows in the cabin “do not come off.”

The simplest solution to this problem is as follows. It is necessary to tighten the heater damper control cable. To do this, you can make one or two turns of this cable on the damper control lever. This lever is located on the body of the VAZ 2109 stove, next to the gas pedal (see photo).

Location of the VAZ 2109 heater damper lever

All the joints of the air ducts and the edges of the stove damper are covered with foam rubber, which is difficult to fully compress using the damper control lever. This leaves a gap of several millimeters. In this case, the damper directing the flow of air either from the street directly or through the heater radiator does not close completely. It closes “up”, while air flows into the front nozzles through the heater radiator, and into the top and side nozzles from the street, through those same millimeters. When the heater fan is running, and the car is moving, these millimeters are quite enough.

Heaters old and new

Finally, we note that the VAZ-21099 of different years of production used heaters with certain design features that related to the angle of the radiator and the location of the main damper.

In so-called old-style stoves (on cars before 1998), the radiator was installed almost vertically, and the main damper was located under the heat exchanger. There was a partition between the rear wall of the case and the radiator, which formed a channel that provided air supply down the case.

When the damper was open, the air flow moved through the radiator, where it was heated and supplied to the air ducts. In ventilation mode, the main damper closed the heat exchanger, forming, together with the front wall of the housing, another channel through which the flow went directly to the air ducts.

In the new model stoves (on cars produced since 1998), the radiator position angle was significantly smaller than on old heaters, which is believed to provide a larger contact area of the air flow for heat exchange.

The position of the main damper and its shape also changed (it became arched). It began to be located above the radiator. In the closed position (ventilation mode), the damper ensures air movement along the shortest path to the air ducts. In heating mode, it blocked the cold air supply channel to the air ducts and directed the flow down the housing, from where it went to the heat exchanger.

Winter has come and you, anticipating a comfortable and warm ride in your car, start its engine and wait for it to warm up. And now, the moment to turn on the stove has come! You redirect the airflow towards you, and what happens? Absolutely nothing! It's all because of the VAZ 2114 stove cables.

The side and central deflectors give out a portion of barely warm air, and blowing the glass does not melt the ice as quickly as we would like. Many car owners put up with such injustice, the quirks of the domestic automobile industry. But you and I are not one of them and are going to radically move the situation forward!

Refinement of the pipe

When the air flow from the left deflector is too small, you can force its intensity. To do this, you need to insert a small (about 50 mm) fan into the pipe. A cooler used in computers is suitable for tuning.

First remove the deflector. Make a hole for the cooler and install it. Seal. Put the branch pipe with the fan in place. Restore electrical.

An alternative is to connect the cooler directly to the heater contacts. In this case, it will only work when the ignition is on.

Properly carried out modernization will add warmth to the interior and save the owner of the VAZ 2114 from many problems.

Selecting a heating tap and cost of the part

A driver faced with a leaking heating tap will inevitably be faced with the question: which tap to buy as a replacement? The question is not as simple as it might seem at first glance. Because there are three types of heating taps, which differ not only in cost, but also in design. Let's list them:

  • faucet with membrane. This is exactly the crane that the manufacturer installed on the “nines” that came off the production line. Cost - from 400 rubles. This is the cheapest faucet that can be found on the market today. However, the low price should not deceive the car owner: the reliability of membrane taps leaves much to be desired. And you can purchase them only in one case: when you couldn’t find anything else;
  • ball valve As the name suggests, the locking element in this device is a massive ball, which is much more reliable than a standard membrane. However, the above ball is made of steel. And therefore susceptible to corrosion. Therefore, a car owner who decides to open the tap with the onset of cold weather may be in for a very unpleasant surprise. The cost of such a crane starts from 550 rubles;
  • ceramic faucet. The most reliable and at the same time the most expensive option. Corrosion is not a problem for such devices: their body is made of plastic, and the antifreeze is locked by two tightly pressed ceramic plates. The cost of a ceramic faucet starts from 700 rubles, and if the car owner is not short of money, then ceramics should be purchased.

Features of the heating system at Pyatnashka

On the VAZ 2115, the heating system includes the following elements:

  • the VAZ stove itself, which includes a plastic housing, a radiator assembly, and a ventilation device;
  • VAZ heater valve, used to block the access of antifreeze to the radiator device and the mechanical drive of the unit;
  • a control unit used to regulate air flow, located in the center console.

Replacement instructions

In most cases, the reason lies precisely in the radiator device, so below we will talk about how to replace the VAZ 2109 heater radiator.

How to change the unit on cars with a high or low panel, read on:

Some car owners believe that if the backlight on the center console in the heater area disappears, this is due to the operation of the stove. Remember that the backlight of the stove has nothing to do with the operation of the unit as a whole, so if the backlight has disappeared, you need to find an open circuit and repair it.

I replaced the heater radiator - I’m at a loss as to why it’s not heating.

With the old radiator (which burst) in the weather like now - on a warm engine, it was unbearably hot to hold your hand near the exhaust of the stove.

I just plugged in an unknown used radiator. I washed it 10 times with a shower hose in both directions, everything flows fine there.

from guesswork: 1) I found a slightly torn heat/cold damper. but I don’t think it could have that much of an impact

2) Got in with antifreeze. I bought a ready-made solution of -35 degrees labeled G11. Even then I was alarmed that the exact same “G11 -40 was in white labels with PINK dye.” I took the -35 option because it seemed blue. actually turned out to be green in the light.

Could this be the reason why it won't heat up at all? (salt soon)

3) The hoses may have been mixed up. I now have a pipe going from the side flange of the engine to the RIGHT pipe, and from the iron pipe to the left. could this matter?

PS I drove the traffic jam like hell.

    I played and didn’t guess a single letter! You have an air lock in the heater radiator! How to treat: remove one of the pipes (NOT “supplying” coolant!), start the engine and wait until coolant flows from the fitting. You may be able to do without removing the hose by simply squeezing the thick upper radiator hose with your hands while the car is running and the expansion cap is removed.

    PS Why is there a radiator?!

    Yes, they somehow gave me the entire stove as a burden when I went to buy a motor (I tortured the old one with a script). The new one also creaked very quickly.

    And when the radiator exploded and everything in the cabin flooded, I was kind of happy to see how lucky it was to have an “original” radiator. The fact that it is not original, but in general I don’t understand what it is, I only realized when I had already thrown off my stove. And the day was a day off and there was nowhere to buy spare parts (((

    I played around with the stove for half an hour. Maybe it has become a little better, well, if just a little. There is no trace of the previous heat of the stove.

    What can break?

    The problem that the VAZ 2109 stove does not heat well is by no means new and occurs in every third driver. We need to find out what exactly happened inside the VAZ 2109 stove:

    1. The fuse has blown. Eliminated by replacing the failed part.
    2. Damage to wires. At the initial stage, it is necessary to check how efficient the heating system is and, if necessary, eliminate the break or clean the charred contacts with a special tool.
    3. The fan of the VAZ stove does not work. Eliminated by replacing the failed component. Of course, a low panel will somewhat complicate the process of removing this element for an inexperienced driver, while a high panel, on the contrary, will open up an additional field for activity.
    4. Open circuit resistor. It is necessary to check the serviceability of the components, and then find out where exactly the break occurred. This issue is best dealt with by a professional electrician, while a non-specialist can look for a problem for a very long time. Even a stove diagram that literally breaks the system down into components won’t help.
    5. The heating switch has failed. The most common cause is burnt contacts or direct sticking of the pusher. In some cases, it can be eliminated only after the switch is replaced.

    Another classic and no less common reason that the heater in a car does not heat is a malfunction of the radiator. The easiest way is to clean it, which gives a positive result in the vast majority of cases. Of course, in order to get to the radiator, it will be necessary to remove the dashboard and the heater housing, but all these manipulations will take no more than an hour.

    After the radiator is removed and cleaned, you can put it back in place and check how the heating system now functions, whether the problems that caused the work have been resolved.

    If the stove still blows cold air, the radiator will definitely have to be replaced.

    After such changes and provided there are no other damages, there is no doubt: the stove on the VAZ 2109 will work correctly.

    The VAZ 2109 stove must be in good working order. If in summer this is not so critical, then in winter it is simply impossible to drive a car with a non-working stove: firstly, it is cold, and secondly, the windows fog up, freeze and you cannot see the road. Many times I have seen comrades who drive in winter with the window open - it’s because their stove is not working. If you do not open the window, the windshield will very quickly become covered with steam, which, when frozen, becomes a crust of ice. This method of driving should be reserved as a last resort if the stove breaks down on the road. And so the stove needs to be repaired.

    The main reasons that the stove 2108 2109 21099 does not work: 1) The stove fan does not work 1.1 The stove fan motor is faulty 1.2 The fan switch and wiring are faulty 2) The air ducts are clogged 2.1 The air ducts are clogged with leaves, pine needles, fluff and other debris 2.2 The dampers are not open air ducts 3) The stove (radiator) itself does not heat 3.1 The radiator is clogged with dirt (no coolant flow) 3.2 The heater tap is not open 3.3 The coolant level in the VAZ 2109 cooling system is low 3.4 There is an air lock in the heater radiator 3.5 The VAZ 2109 engine does not warm up to operating temperature 85-90 degrees 3.6 The pump is faulty As you can see, there are only three main reasons why the VAZ 2109 stove does not heat, however, each of these three faults can be caused by a number of other faults. We go in order: 1) Check whether the stove fan is working. We get into the car, turn on the ignition and turn on the heater fan using the switch.

    The switch has four positions: off and three speeds. Turn on the stove fan at first speed and listen. If the fan is running it should be clearly audible. If you don’t hear anything, then open the hood and listen from under the hood.

    If there is no sound of the fan running, then it needs to be removed and checked by a familiar electrician.

    If the check shows that the fan motor is working, then you need to deal with the wiring. Look for why there is no voltage coming from the switch to the fan motor. If the fan is working properly and works well at all speeds, then the reason that the VAZ 2109 stove does not work is not in it. 2) Check how well the air is blowing from the furnace air ducts: turn on the fan and place your hand alternately on the windshield and side windows.

    There should be a good feeling of air flow. If the fan works, but there is no blowing of the glass, check whether the blowers themselves are open.

    Also check how the boxes from the stove to the side window blowers fit.

    If everything is open, but the air still does not blow, then you will have to disassemble the stove and look for the reason inside. 3) Doesn't heat up. The VAZ 2109 heater radiator does not heat for one reason only - there is no coolant flow through it. There are many reasons why the coolant does not circulate through the radiator, let’s consider them in order: 3.1 If you have never drained the coolant from the engine cooling system since purchasing the VAZ 2109, then you need to make sure that it is clean. The service life of antifreeze and antifreeze used as a coolant is five years. If the fluid has not been changed for a long time, then a sediment forms in the cooling system of the VAZ 2109 engine, which circulates through the tubes. This sediment clogs the heater radiator tubes and the heater stops heating. Therefore, first of all, we drain the coolant; if it is covered in dirt and sediment, then the cooling system must be flushed with special flushing fluids sold in car dealerships. Having purchased such a liquid, you pour it into the cooling system of the VAZ 2109 and start the engine. The instructions say how long it is necessary to circulate the flushing fluid in the system before draining. Then you drain the flushing fluid, it will be covered in silt and sediment, its task is to flush the cooling system. Then fill in new antifreeze and check the operation of the stove; if it still does not heat, then you need to remove the heater radiator and wash and blow it out.

    If you cannot wash it, you will have to buy a new heater radiator. 3.2 The heater tap is the weak point of the cooling system of the VAZ 2109. The tap opens and closes using a lever on the panel, which is connected to the tap using a rod.

    Move the lever and see for yourself whether the heater tap opens. If the draft moves the faucet very weakly, or does not move it at all, then it is necessary to adjust the draft normally. 3.3 The VAZ 2109 stove does not heat well when in the cooling system.

    When the level is low, part of the heater core is filled with air and the stove heats very weakly. If your coolant level is low, add antifreeze to the normal level. You will immediately notice that the stove heats up better. 3.4 It is rare, but it happens that in a VAZ 2109 an air lock forms in the engine cooling system. To remove the air lock, do the following: a) Unscrew one of the heating pipes.

    This is the highest point of the cooling system, so all the air collects there. b) Remove the cap from the expansion tank and blow into it with your mouth, squeezing air out of the system. The hose removed from the carburetor will hiss - this is air escaping. c) As soon as antifreeze flows from the carburetor heating hose, immediately put it on the fitting. That's it, the air lock has been removed from the VAZ 2109 cooling system. 3.5 If the VAZ 2109 engine does not warm up to an operating temperature of 90 degrees, then the stove will also blow barely warm air. The main reason that the VAZ 2109 engine does not warm up to operating temperature is. 3.6 The VAZ 2109 stove will not heat if the pump is faulty. If the pump is faulty, the VAZ 2109 engine boils, but the heater blows cold. This is explained simply - there is no circulation of liquid, it stands in one place and boils. Treated by replacing the pump. Well, we have looked at the most common reasons why the VAZ 2109 stove does not heat up.

    Heating of the VAZ 2109 interior is provided by the operation of the heater radiator, connected in parallel to the main radiator, which is part of the engine cooling system.
