What does code P0343 mean?

P0343 is triggered when the engine control module (ECU) receives a faulty signal from the camshaft position sensor (CPS).

A common cause is a faulty camshaft sensor or damaged wiring. The DPRV is installed on one of the camshafts. P0343 is a common trouble code that has been used by all automakers since approximately 2000.

Some engines have multiple camshaft position sensors. Since the camshaft must be in sync with the crankshaft sensor when starting, a common symptom is that the engine will be hard to start or not start at all.

The four-stroke crankshaft rotates two revolutions per cycle, and the camshafts rotate one revolution per cycle. Older cars usually do not have a camshaft sensor, but only a crankshaft sensor. This is because older cars don't need to know what RPM the crankshaft is at.

Each cylinder is supplied with ignition and fuel once every two revolutions of the crankshaft. To do this, the DPRV is used to determine whether the cylinder is in the intake or combustion cycle.

In older cars without a camshaft sensor, the spark plugs fire twice per revolution, this is called "wasted spark." Thus, to avoid firing the ignition coils twice per revolution when only one is required, a camshaft sensor is used.

Symptoms of malfunction

How to get rid of error p0340

Methods for getting rid of malfunctions that caused the formation of error p0340 (malfunction in the camshaft position sensor circuit) depend on the causes of their occurrence, as well as the specific car model - for example, Nissan, Ford, Chevrolet, Opel, Toyota. , VAZ (in particular, VAZ 2114). However, the general verification algorithm will be as follows:

  1. Using an error scanner, check the ECU memory for errors p0340 and possible others. Make sure that the engine has the correct sensor for this particular motor. In particular, not only in terms of fastening, but also in model, since sensors may differ in both geometric shape and size, and because of this, the sensitive element of the sensor will not detect the passage of a rapper near it, which will lead to the absence of corresponding signals on the ECU. If the sensor is not suitable, you need to buy a new camshaft sensor and replace it.
  4. Visually check the condition of the contacts and terminals in the electrical circuit for connecting the camshaft sensor. In some cases, oxidation (rust) occurs on critical terminals, which leads to a decrease in the quality of contact. This is due to exposure to moisture and/or simply old age. If oxides are detected, you must get rid of them by thoroughly wiping the contacts. To clean difficult stains, you can use special electrical contact cleaners.
  5. Using a multimeter in continuity mode or measuring insulation resistance, you need to verify the integrity of the wires coming from the computer to the camshaft sensor. Usually there are three wires. In addition to checking the integrity of the wires, it is also necessary to check the insulation resistance value in pairs between them, as well as between each of the wires and the machine body (“ground”). However, in the latter case, the ground wire will “ring” with the body. Moreover, in the process of the described test, the multimeter probes must be placed on the contacts of the corresponding connectors.

VAZ 2114: error 0343 - causes, symptoms, solutions

Error P0343 for VAZ 2114 (8 valves) indicates a malfunction of the camshaft position sensor. It indicates that this sensor emits a very high signal level that is not provided for by the automaker. This means that there is increased voltage in its circuit.

If you are absolutely sure that the phase sensor is faulty, you can replace it yourself. It is located at the end of the cylinder head next to the air filter.

Replacing the phase sensor begins by disconnecting the power from the battery. In this case, the control unit memory will be reset.
