Operating principle
The heated windshield could not be created using the same principle as the rear one. Since pronounced threads will greatly interfere with the view. Because of this, the production of “warm” front windows costs much more. There are several types of implementation of heating in the windshield. The most common is heating filaments built into the glass. They are practically invisible, especially from the inside (after some getting used to). This design is very effective, but practically unrepairable. If one of the threads burns out, it cannot be restored. Only the control unit or connection connectors can be repaired.
The second method is implemented using a metallized layer between parts of triplex glass. It plays the role of a heating element. This technology is not afraid of chipping, unlike the threads from the previous version.
The third type is not quite full-fledged heating. Windshields with heated wiper zones are more common due to their simplicity and low cost. Implemented using rear window heating technology. Special heating tracks are located at the bottom, and in addition to the wipers, they can heat the lower half of the glass. Helps a lot when windshield wipers freeze up. You won't have to break ice at traffic lights or tear your windshield wipers off the glass after parking.
Defects requiring replacement
For car windshields on Granta, standard triplex is used, two layers of 2 mm tempered M1 glass are pressed with polyvinyl butyral (PVB) film, the minimum thickness of the windshield is 4 mm. When hit by a stone that flies out from under the wheels of the vehicle in front at a speed of more than 80 km/h, a deep chip is formed, and cracks spread throughout the area due to vibration. If such damage occurs, the part must be replaced. Replacement will also be required in other cases where there is no direct impact of gravel. These include:
- Significant wear on the windshield, reducing visibility by more than 15%.
- A crack that goes from edge to edge. Appears if there is a violation of the geometry due to body deformation.
- Deep scratches that cannot be repaired, polished or varnished.
What are the benefits?
People are usually willing to pay more for additional comfort. Moreover, this option is available not only from premium car brands, but also in many Ford Focus trim levels. Heated windshields have recently become available even for domestic cars.
The main advantage of such glasses is the possibility of a quick start in winter. Defrosting of a heated windshield occurs several times faster than with a standard ventilation system. In addition, at the same time the issue of fogging in wet weather is resolved.
A heated windshield retains its transparency much longer. Ordinary glass is constantly cleaned with scrapers in winter. This inevitably leads to micro-scratches. After a few years, a network of scratches leads to clouding of the glass.
Flaws
The windshield heating system has a number of disadvantages, which is why it is not widely used. The main one is the cost of production. Any type of heating increases the cost. Here it’s up to you to decide whether you’re willing to pay 2-3 times more than usual for a windshield. True, maybe you will be lucky and never have to change it. In case of lack of funds, heated and non-heated glass are interchangeable. Although, if your car had regular glass in the base, then when installing heated glass, additional difficulties will arise with connecting the electrical component.
An important drawback is the distorted glare from the headlights of oncoming cars at night, which is created by a heated windshield. Ford, for example, applies a special coating that eliminates this effect.
The additional load on the electrical system of the car is not dramatically large, but it can “kill” a weak battery at the wrong moment.
What else can you heat up?
Heated windshield washer nozzles are another type of winter help. This option is attractive due to its accessibility and efficiency. Injectors with heating elements are inexpensive and can be installed on almost any car. If you can’t find heated injectors designed specifically for your model, you can use universal ones or pick them up from another car. As a bonus, you may also get a fan sprayer instead of a jet sprayer, which covers the glass area much more effectively and uses washer fluid economically. The problem may only arise with the fastening, but in most cases this can be solved.

Why heat up the injectors?
Warm washer fluid cleans the glass much better from ice or wet snow. The wiper rubber also becomes more elastic and does not scratch the glass with ice particles. Not to mention the confidence on the winter road, which is much higher with good visibility.
In addition to comfort, heating the nozzles is useful in that it prevents possible breakdowns of the washer system. If the nozzles are frozen, there is a risk that the washer motor may fail. Due to excess pressure, the coolant supply hoses may tear or be torn from their connection points. And they are not always located in an accessible place, so repairs are likely to be difficult.

A frozen windshield in winter is a big problem, since driving a car requires good visibility. Removing ice crust from glass takes a lot of time, which is critical in the morning. Expensive cars are equipped with built-in heated windshields, but what should owners of cheaper cars do? There are ways out and there are many of them.

Installing heating on windshield wipers
Inside these wipers there is an element that is heated by current. Heat from the element is transferred to the rubber band and blade body, which helps melt the ice on the windshield in a short time. There are two types of heated wipers:
- Activated when plugged into the cigarette lighter
- Activated by pressing a button on the remote control that comes with them.
All two options are connected via the car's cigarette lighter. It’s just that in the first option, to turn off the heating, you need to disconnect the connector from the cigarette lighter, and in the second option, you can simply press the button on the remote control. All two options are mounted as follows.
Installation
It's easy to heat the brushes. The essence of the connection diagram: The wire is connected to the cigarette lighter and led out of the passenger compartment into the engine compartment to the brushes.
Advice. After installation, you should not place the wire near the motor or connector, as it will melt.
From the engine compartment, the wire is connected to the brush. It is fixed on the brush with special clamps that come with it.
Advantages: fast heating, relative ease of installation

Removing old glass
Car dealerships always replace the seal. When making repairs yourself, you need to check the part and if there are no creases or stretch marks, then the elastic band can be reused. Dismantling old glass in stages:
- Make a through hole in the sealant in the side of the windshield with an awl.
- Stretch the string.
- Tilt the string towards the glass and forcefully cut out the part around the perimeter.
- If there is a danger of damaging the paintwork because the string is crooked, it is better to cover the frame with tape.
- Pull out the windshield.
The most important step in self-installation is preparing the seat. The frame must be cleaned of old glue and primed. It is recommended to use assembly cutters or a construction knife. You cannot clean the seat down to the metal; it is better to leave up to 1-2 mm of the old sealant. When gluing, this will give additional grip and increase adhesion.
Heated windshield wiper rest area
Heating of the wiper area is carried out by gluing a special film into which heating elements are built. These elements are powered from the vehicle's network. The heating tape is applied to the windshield on the passenger compartment side.
The entire windshield is not heated by this method, but the most important part of it for viewing is heated, so this method is good.
Installation
To apply a heating film with heating elements to the windshield wiper rest zone, you will either have to remove the dashboard or remove the glass. The second option is simpler and cheaper if you contact a specialized service.
Heating elements are glued to the removed glass, as shown in the photo. It is important to leave a distance of 2 cm from the edges of the glass, since the sealant will lie there.
It is best to power this electric heating with a wire with a cross section of 1.5 mm.
The simplest option for connecting the defroster: in parallel with the button for turning on the heated rear window. This means that when the rear window heating is turned on, the front window heating will also work.
Now you need to find the plus of the network. It can be used from any electrical option of the car, for example, from heated mirrors. You need any wire where there is a voltage greater than or equal to 12 volts. This wire is connected through the switch and relay.

This type of heating not only helps to melt the layer on the glass in winter, but also to wash away dirt in summer, since warm water washes better than cold water. There are two ways to heat the washer fluid:
- Heating the washer barrel
- Heated washer nozzles
Keg heating
The washer is heated using special plates with a thermostat. You can purchase them at any radio electronics store.
Just like heating the brushes and windshield, these plates are connected via a 12 Volt wire. For example, you can take the wire from the heated mirrors. Since these elements have a built-in thermostat, they are able to turn off when the temperature reaches above 50 degrees.
It is not difficult to fix the plates on the barrel, since they are self-adhesive.
Advice. When using this method, it is better to insulate the washer barrel itself so that it retains heat better. This is done by covering it with three layers of foil.
Heating of injectors
The heating of the nozzles washing the windshield is carried out due to the built-in resistance inside them. Under the influence of current, this resistance heats up and transfers heat to the washer fluid.
You can either buy such nozzles or make them yourself. The second option is preferable, since the first is expensive. You can buy ordinary cheap injectors and install a heating element in them. This element is a 300 ohm resistor, which can be purchased at a radio electronics store for 20 rubles. You will need 4 pieces.
To place the resistor inside, you need to drill a groove in the plastic body of the nozzle.
By inserting a resistor into the groove, we connect it.
We solder the wires to the ends of the resistor and connect them, for example, through the heated rear window. This windshield heater is characterized by the rapid heating of the liquid.
Purchasing a new heated front window
The option is good if your car is equipped with a heated front window. You can simply purchase such glass and install it instead of the old one. This item will be original and of high quality.
If such equipment is not available, you can purchase Chinese non-original heated glass. This option is already a lottery, because it is not a fact that this frontal approach will work well.
Do not forget that this glass will have to be installed either independently or at a service center. It’s best to do it yourself, because purchasing new heated glass is an expensive purchase (the cost of such glass starts from 10,000 rubles).
Advantages: when buying the original, the highest quality option.
Disadvantages: high cost, risk of low-quality products when buying non-original ones.
Stages of windshield replacement for Lada Granta
Technologically, replacing the windshield of a Lada Granta consists of several stages:
- dismantling,
- treatment of the installation site,
- inserting new glass.
After removing the old auto glass, the frame is cleaned of any remaining adhesive and then degreased. At the next stage, a primer is applied to increase the adhesion of the glue and body parts. Purchasing special additional airflow
This is the cheapest and worst performing method. Many advertisements for these devices on the Internet and on TV say otherwise, but you shouldn’t believe them. The problem with such a windshield heater is that the heat will not spread evenly, but at a certain point. These heating fans themselves are low-power, so you will have to wait a long time for them to melt the glass. However, such additional airflow is very easy to install: just install it on the dashboard and plug it into the cigarette lighter. Additional electric blowing is good only if you warm up the car engine for a long time (you can also warm up the windshield at the same time).

Disadvantages: Long warm-up time, uneven heating plane
Heated windshield
There are two types of electric windshield heating:
1. Heating the entire area of the windshield.
2. Heating the rest zone of the windshield wiper blades.
Heating the entire glass surface is not a cheap pleasure (due to the complexity of manufacturing), so not every car has such a winter-friendly option. They are so thin that they are practically invisible (especially in cloudy weather). When connected, these threads heat up and heat the glass.

Disadvantages of heating filaments
The disadvantages of such threads are that in bright sunny weather they become visible (you sit as if in a cage). At night, these threads “glare” from the headlights of oncoming cars. And of course, the durability of such glass is much lower than heated glass with a metallized composition. If a pebble hits or one thread burns out, then some area on the glass, and maybe the entire glass, will no longer be heated. This windshield cannot be repaired.
And the cheapest of the car’s winter options is heating not the entire glass, but only the area where the wiper blades stop. Everything here is simple and is made using the same technology as heated rear window. The heating element in the form of tracks (very similar to the heating tracks of the rear window of a car) is located in the area where the brushes stop.
Despite the differences in the manufacture of the heating zone and the cost of the windshield, the operating principle of electric heating is the same for all glasses. When you press the heating button, an electric current flows through a relay to a metallized surface or to thin wires located on or in the glass. These heating elements begin to heat up under the influence of electric current to a certain temperature. The windshield heats up and melts the ice.
Everything is very simple. The glass got hot and turned off. The glass cooled down and the heating turned on again. It’s even surprising why all cars intended for use in cold climates are not required to have heated windows installed?
Principle of the windshield heating system
The operating principle of electrically heated windshields is quite simple. Between the layers of triplex, thin special metal threads are mounted, to which power is connected. The main difference between domestic electrically heated windshields and their foreign counterparts is that thin wires are located along two circuits. One of them provides heating for the driver's area, and the other heats the passenger area.
Electrically heated windshields using a dual-circuit scheme are characterized by low energy consumption, which makes it possible to successfully use these devices on domestically produced cars that are equipped with low-power generators. Plus, reducing energy consumption is beneficial in terms of fuel economy.
The operation of the system is controlled by an electronic unit (ECU), which is most often called the “Heated Windshield Relay”. In fact, the design of the ECU includes 2 open-type relays and a microprocessor. The operating algorithm of the dual-circuit windshield heating system provides two operating modes: North and South.
How does the heated windshield work according to the “North” scheme:
- First key press . When you press the heating button, the left circuit (driver's area) and the rear window heating are activated. If there is no need to heat the rear window, you can press the button and turn it off. In this case, heating of the driver's area will continue for 5 minutes. Then the left circuit is turned off and the right circuit (passenger zone) is turned on for 5 minutes.
- Press the key again . If the driver's zone defrosts before 5 minutes, you can press the heat button again and turn off the left circuit. At the same time, turn on the heating of the passenger area for 5 minutes.
- Pressing the key twice . When you press the electric heating button twice, the driver's zone circuit is turned on for 40 minutes. Continuous operation of the left circuit allows you to effectively eliminate fogging or frosting of the windshield at low temperatures in drizzling rain conditions, when the glazing is covered with a thin crust of ice.
To protect the battery from complete discharge when the generator is not running, the windshield heating system is turned off. If the battery charge level drops to a certain value in cases where the generator fails while the windshield heating is on, the microprocessor will automatically turn off the system.
How does windshield heating work according to the “South” scheme:
In conditions of elevated temperatures, when the glass constantly fogs up, the heated windshield can be switched to the “South” circuit. In this case, both circuits will turn on simultaneously. At the same time, the heating power is reduced by 2/3 and this is quite enough to effectively combat fogging. The system switches from the “North” to the “South” mode and back within 15 minutes.
Installing a heated windshield
As practice shows, it is possible to install a heated windshield system on a car, even if this is not provided by the manufacturer. There is nothing complicated about this, you just need to buy a heated windshield complete with a relay and fuse.
Installation of a heated windshield can be done by connecting to the standard rear window heating wiring, as provided, for example, on a Lada Kalina car, or by switching on via a separate line.
Standard scheme . The easiest way to connect power to the heated windshield is outlined in the instructions that come with the relay. According to this diagram, the power and relay must be connected through the heated rear window/mirror button to the standard wiring. In order to connect the heating relay block to the glass wiring, you need to cut off the standard connectors and replace their connectors, which are included in the kit. However, it will be easier and more reliable if the wires are twisted, soldered and insulated.
We connect the cable that comes from the heating relay through a fuse (30 A) to connector No. 87 of the K4 heating relay. As a rule, this is a yellow-blue or blue wire. We connect the cable that goes to the power button to the connector of the green-red wire of relay K10.
The alternator warning lamp cable should be connected to the white-brown wire of terminal No. 22 of any instrument panel connector.
The ground contact of the glass, located on top, must first be extended and then connected to the roof reinforcement in the area of the ceiling light. To do this, drill a hole in the amplifier so that the ceiling does not interfere. Insert the bolt and secure the wire with a nut and a wide washer.
Your vehicle does not have a heated window option.
What to do, because the winter is long and cold? You can buy glass for your car that already has heating elements. Finding such a windshield is not a problem.
