DIY firmware for Lada Granta 8 valve

Lada Granta is one of the few domestic cars that has an electronic control unit.

The practicality and rationality of such an innovation, namely the integration of the M74CAN ECU into the vehicle system, is noted by a number of positive factors, which, in turn, are noted by the owners of the Lada Grant.

It is also worth noting a noticeable drawback, which lies not in the device itself, but in poor sealing of the ECU. As a result of water entering the device, the microcircuit burns out, which leads to unstable engine operation, and the Lada Granta ECU requires replacement.

The only solution is to replace the ECU itself, which, in turn, is located opposite the front passenger seat, or rather under the glove compartment, layers of trim and sound insulation of the floor.

Chip tuning of Lada Granta/Kalina/Priora engine, reviews

Engine tuning (chip tuning) allows you to change its behavior.
For example, the car will become “faster”, pick up speed better and accelerate more dynamically from a standstill. The power will increase, which will allow you to overtake and maneuver faster. The gas pedal will become more responsive and fuel consumption will decrease. All this is promised by the masters who are engaged in chip tuning of Lada cars, but is this really so? To answer this question, we decided to turn to the reviews of drivers who had their Lada Granta engine chip-tuned.

1. The author of this video tells the first impression:

According to him, before chip tuning, the Lada Granta was a little sluggish, the gas pedal response was slow. After tuning the engine, the car began to drive simply amazingly, it just “came to life.” In the races it is not inferior to Renault Logan and Hyundai Getz. Fuel consumption has not increased. The author also shows how, after chip tuning, his car began to accelerate (up to 100 km/h in 10 seconds).

It is worth noting that the majority of channel users did not agree with the review. They did not notice improved dynamics during overclocking. The price of chip tuning was unreasonably high, and they were dissatisfied with the results after tuning the engine.

2. Another video review about chip tuning of a Lada Granta with an automatic transmission in the “luxury” configuration. The driver immediately notices the difference after replacing the factory engine software. If previously the speed switching occurred at 4500 rpm, then after adjustment the switching occurs already at around 5000-5500 rpm. The response to the gas pedal has become faster. The power has increased, which allowed the Lada Granta with automatic transmission to slip. The driver was pleased with the work done.

And again, the main audience does not agree with the author’s opinion. They claim that 5500 rpm “turns” even without firmware, grinds without problems, sometimes even on the second. It is worth noting that both video reviews were published for advertising purposes, as evidenced by the name of the author and the advertisement during viewing.

Thus , the real review about chip tuning of the Lada Granta was formed from the comments on the video. The majority of users do not share the opinion of the authors of the videos and prefer not to change the factory firmware of the engine. Do not forget that there are many firmwares that allow you to approach chip tuning of each car individually. And what the result of replacing the software will be depends on the specialist.

Help determine the need for engine tuning by participating in the survey. Tell us about your experience of chip tuning on Grant, Kalina or Priora. Let us remind you that on the site you will find other ways to do car tuning yourself.

What you need for firmware

In order to flash the electronic engine control unit you will need several essential things.

Attention: if a car enthusiast has never carried out brain flashing operations, then it is not recommended to do it yourself. Since an incorrectly performed procedure can lead to catastrophic consequences, such as the ECU failing, the car will not start, or even an electronic part will fail and require replacement, which in some cases will significantly hit the owner’s wallet.

Self-reflashing the ECU will require the following resources:

  • A laptop, tablet PC or a special computer used by experienced auto electricians and tuning specialists.
  • Software according to the vehicle.
  • Directly the firmware software of the corresponding version.
  • OBD II or K-line cable. Recently, in order not to carry wires, wireless connection via Bluetooth channels has become popular.
  • Well, the last, important factor is the presence of brains and hands growing from the right place.

Dynamics

External view of engine 21116

This is not a racing car, but there is enough power for both city driving and highway driving. If we compare it with the 16-valve engine of the Lada Granta, which is installed on the Luxury versions, then it has more torque at the bottom. This means that you can drive in 5th gear at a speed of 40 km/h.

For example, you are driving at 5 speed, the traffic light in front lights up red. You release the gas pedal and the car brakes with the engine. The light turns green and you can continue driving in 5th gear even if the vehicle speed has dropped to 40 km/h.

I was pleasantly surprised by the elasticity of the motor. Considering that I previously owned a Priora, and it has a 98 hp engine, then the engine is 87 hp. I like grants better.

Tuning the multimedia system

In addition to the ESUP, you can also reflash the multimedia system. After the procedure, new functions will become available to the car enthusiast, and the system itself will be more modern. After the procedure, you can install rear view cameras, you will be able to access the Internet, and the player will read new file formats. You can install navigation.

So, you can look for problems in the mechanical part of the car for a long time and not find them. Or you can simply reflash the electronic system, and a lot will be resolved by itself.

What to expect from ECU tuning

Reflashing allows you to correct errors and optimize the performance of the car.
Companies offering chip tuning services develop and offer various software that allows you to optimize the basic performance of cars.

This process allows you to correct all sorts of errors, create a backup copy of the initial settings, study and adjust characteristics, as well as make changes and test new firmware of electronic components.

If you need to return to default settings, this is done almost instantly. But those who have already reflashed Granta will never return to the standard factory settings. After flashing you can get:

  • reduction in fuel consumption by 5%;
  • high speed characteristics;
  • 10% increase in power;
  • smooth operation of the automatic transmission;
  • improved traction.

And that's not all. In this case, not a single intervention is made in the mechanics. This is one of the cheapest ways to make Granta better. There is one caveat. If the car is currently under warranty, after flashing the ECU, the warranty is invalid.

What modes are optimized when chip tuning a Granta power plant?

The plant periodically makes some warranty adjustments at service stations, but not everyone uses this service, and those who undergo warranty maintenance do not always receive it. As a result, owners continue to operate obviously faulty cars, not suspecting that it is enough to correct the electronic algorithm. The point of changing the ECM software is to optimize the operation of the engine and transmission.

Lada Granta modes that require improvement:

  • ignition timing;
  • injection time value;
  • exhaust emission control systems;
  • algorithm for determining the octane number of fuel;
  • automatic transmission operation.

Engine Features

Due to the design of the car's cooling system, the engine does not warm up above 80 degrees. The management of AvtoVAZ does not see anything wrong with this; they have an official information letter on this matter. You can read it in the material: What is the operating temperature of an 8 valve engine.

The engine design is as simple as an axe. There are no hydraulic compensators, no sores were noticed. Mostly problems can arise due to malfunctions in the engine management system.

Video of acceleration to 100 km per hour

I haven’t shot my video yet, it’s winter, so we’ll wait for the weather to warm up. That's when I'll post it on our YouTube channel. In the meantime, here's a video from Grantovodov.

Here's another interesting video. It is interesting because the measurement is made using an application with a navigator , which means that the speedometer readings are more accurate if the navigator is well calibrated. Everyone knows that the higher the speed, the more the car’s speedometer lies.

Features of flashing SRS AIRBAG

Airbeg (airbag) - designed to protect passengers during a collision. When Airbeg is activated, the SRS electronic control system is blocked.

The manufacturer stipulates that after the airbags are deployed, the SRS AIRBAG unit is replaced with a new one. However, this procedure is quite expensive. It is more advisable to reflash the SRS AIRBAG. To do this, you simply need to erase information about the deployment of airbags from the system memory. In some car models, it is also necessary to calibrate the SRS AIRBAG sensors.

Reasons that require modification of the Lada Granta ECU

As mentioned above, VAZ equipped the new 2190 with an M74 controller 11186-1411020-12. The essence of its functioning is radically different from earlier models, i.e. other blocks and reprogramming methods do not work here. Data transmission is carried out via the CAN bus, which has a higher speed than the K-channel of previous versions.

A car with factory settings generally satisfies many drivers, but some still decide to update the ECM for several reasons:

  • the engine does not maintain idle speed when the air conditioner is on;
  • difficulty starting a cold engine;
  • incorrect temperature conditions;
  • engine stop;
  • lacks dynamics;
  • excess fuel consumption.

A VAZ 2190 with an automatic transmission at medium speeds experiences some difficulties in choosing the appropriate speed - the automatic transmission is constantly trying to switch to a lower gear. For an urban environment with little traffic, this solution is not critical, but on the highway or in heavy traffic it will be problematic to maneuver.

There are also numerous comments regarding the lack of smooth transitions and weak traction at the lowest revs. Experts agree that the factory workers did not finalize the parametric characteristics of the controller a little. From this we can conclude that any self-respecting driver should still make adjustments to the program.

Firmware from Paulus for VAZ M74 + GBO

M74 firmware set The torque of the low and middle ranges has been optimized, slips and delays in throttling have been eliminated, the power level of the upper range has been slightly raised due to the “departure” from vegetable compounds of the E4 standard.
The E2 version is included for the possibility of physically removing the catalyst and a second L probe. The M74 ECU of VAZ cars is constantly subject to modification of the hardware structure of the controller. With each new version of the software, all previous modifications are always taken into account. This allows the interchangeability of software from previous factory versions, but only WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE LINE. Only replacing old ones with new ones, replacing new software with old ones is not acceptable!

Attention! The latest versions of the software have undergone changes from the factory, namely, the manufacturers have changed the storage location of the training data. Previously, this data was stored in EEPROM, but now training has moved to the processor memory area. In this case, if you update the old software with a newer one, with a different location for storing the training, the inevitable will happen, a complete reset of the controller’s training (Immo, ch.ya., etc. will fly off). To avoid unnecessary problems, be sure to make a backup copy of EEPROM (4kb)/Training_Data (FULL or 64k) if necessary.

Noise level

I switched to this car from the Renault Megane 2. My Renault was equipped with a 1.6-liter engine, a power of 113 horses, and the number of valves was 16.

After it, the Granta engine works like a tractor. Regardless of the car's mileage. Even the engine on the carburetor VAZ-21093 seemed quieter to me.

I specifically compared the noise level on a new Grant with a mileage of 5,000 km and on mine with a mileage of 55,000 km. As it warms up, the sound becomes quieter, but most likely you just get used to it.

But it is also worth considering that there are no hydraulic compensators, so you will have to adjust the valves. By the way, the engine in the luxury version (98 hp) also rumbles.

Paulus (Pavel Ivanov, Paulus) and Kstovchanin (Alexey Sokolov, ADAKT) are the most famous firmware calibrators in Russia. Together they were the first to develop the field of chip tuning and collaborated for a long time. Paulus worked on gasoline engines, Kstovchanin on diesel ones. Today, everyone has their own company and they are the leaders in popularity among Russian drivers. The authors work in different cities (Paulus - Moscow), but periodically collaborate.

Paulus and ADACT firmware are used by the Speed Laboratory tuning network.

Paulus' prices for chip tuning are average.

On the club forums and the official website of Paulus, the author of the firmware constantly warns that his works are not publicly available on the Internet. The options offered are scams.

Re-flashing process

The M 74 CAN module in the Lada Granta is located in front, opposite the passenger seat. To flash the firmware it must be removed. First, you should bend the trim and sound insulation of the interior and unscrew the 3 bolts. Now you need to disconnect the wires. This can be done by squeezing the clamp of the bracket; the connector will easily come out of its place. Of course, this work should be done with the negative terminal disconnected. The ECU has been removed, you can proceed to programming it.

In addition to the available adapter, program with an additional module and firmware, you will need a 12 V power supply, or even better, a battery. Next comes the most important part of the work. You need to connect the connectors of the adapter and the ECU with wires. You will need any 2 switches. With their help, + 12 V will be supplied to the required contacts when necessary. The connection is made in the following order:

  • connector 1 (large);
  • J1 - switch 1, switchable voltage (K15);
  • B2 - switch 2, programming permission (12V);
  • A4 - switch 2, programming permission (12V);
  • E2 -CAN-L;
  • E3 -CAN-H;
  • K1 - 510 Ohm jumper on E3;
  • connector 2 (small);
  • G2;G3;G4 — mass;
  • H1;H2 - non-switchable voltage (K30);
  • F2 - switchable voltage (K15);
  • D2 - K-Line.

How to remove the ECU of a Lada Granta step by step instructions

In order to remove the Lada Granta ECU, you will need to perform the following procedure:

  1. De-energize the system by removing the terminals from the car battery
  2. The ECU controller is located under the glove compartment under the passenger's feet and hidden under the upholstery. The upholstery is attached to the body on the right with a self-tapping screw. We unscrew this screw.
  3. Next, we move the sheathing away from the floor with our hands as shown in the figure.
  4. Now we bend the soundproofing material to the side
  5. After unscrewing the nuts, we move the ECU away from the body.
  6. Now we squeeze the clamp of the wire harness fastening bracket and fold back the bracket.
  7. We disconnect the connector from the block and similarly disconnect the second harness with wires, after which we remove the ECU from the car. Make the necessary repairs, then install in the reverse order.

Engine life

Under the hood in the “Norma” configuration

The question that causes the most controversy. Officials talk about a mileage of 150,000 km before major repairs; some have traveled 200 thousand km or more without problems. I have a friend who already had his engine repaired at 40 thousand km because the timing belt broke. Yes, the engine here is “plug-in” - this means that if the timing belt breaks, the pistons meet the valves and you can see the fist of friendship.

Engine resource 87 hp. 21116 according to the passport - 150,000 km!

Studying the forums, based on my own experience, I can say that it all depends on how you will operate the engine. The most banal thing: the quality of the oil (choose correctly) and engine operating modes - this is what the mileage before you need to do major repairs depends on.

A little history

Probably, many motorists remember old cars, where all controls were carried out using mechanics, but with the development of automotive industry and computerization, these two industries increasingly began to come into contact and connect.

Not everyone knows that automobile control units appeared back in the 80s in Japan. They were the first to be introduced into mass production in Mitsubishi trucks and were responsible for safe braking. These were ordinary boxes with a microcircuit, which, depending on how the wheel brakes, changed these modes.

In the mid-80s, the General Motors plant for the first time installed the first electronic engine control units on a number of its muscle cars. At that time, this was considered a breakthrough in engine building, but already in the early 90s, many automakers began to equip their cars with this device. Thus, many CIS motorists remember BMW and Mercedes-Benz with a bunch of electronics under the hood.

It is no longer possible to imagine modern automobile production without the use of ECUs. This mechanism controls the operation of the power unit, as well as part of the on-board systems, warns and indicates breakdowns, but it itself can break down and require repair and restoration work.

Generations of control unit development

In world practice, there are several generations of electronic control units; let’s look at the main ones:

  1. The simplest control units responsible for injection. Introduced into the automotive industry in 1982.
  2. Control unit with fuel injection control, as well as oil level indicator and ignition status. First put into operation in 1985.
  3. 3rd generation control units with partial control of the power unit. You can see these on BMWs and Mercedes from the 90s.
  4. Generation 4 ECUs are still widely used to this day. They are installed by domestic manufacturers such as Lada and GAZ. They almost completely took control of the power unit into their own hands.
  5. 5th generation control units can be seen on foreign cars manufactured in 2005-2015.
  6. The latest generation of electronic control units not only control the engine, but also a number of other systems that provide the entire functionality of the machine as a whole.

Firmware for VAZ 2114

Publication date Jun 15, 2014, Categories VAZ cars |

Firmware for VAZ 2114, this issue haunts many motorists. It is believed that by cleaning the “brains” of a car, you can make it faster, more dynamic, and easier to drive.

Of course, in order to professionally reflash the standard ECU, it is recommended to contact special tuning studios, but if you are well versed in the essence of the issue and know exactly what you are going to do, you can replace the VAZ firmware on your own.

Before you start work, you need to find the necessary program that will fully match your car, and then the standard firmware of the VAZ 2114 can be replaced.

To search and select a program, you can refer to the extensive information contained on the Internet. Before reflashing the injector, make sure that this procedure is really necessary.

If any of the car systems does not work adequately, this means that operational errors are not due to a malfunction of the injector or the ECU in general.

Before replacing the firmware, be sure to make sure that the standard software of your car does not provide for disabling misfire detection.

If this option is “registered” in the standard program of the VAZ 2114 car, the need for flashing “no longer exists” automatically. Before replacing, it is necessary to accurately determine the type of standard firmware.

This is done with the help of competent diagnostics and scanmatics, the use of which will accurately reflect the system configuration of your vehicle.

Next, the firmware is replaced according to the general rules. Purchase a DF with a cover and a special pin for the camshaft. Connect the adapter and constantly focus on its readings (in real time) during operation.

Communication with the ECU should be restored, but if an error is reported when connecting to the port, you will still not be able to flash the VAZ 2114 firmware yourself. After this, download a new program (at your discretion) and modify the ECU.

For greater convenience, experts recommend that when performing this work, you generally remove the controller from the car. Upon completion of work, check the functioning of all systems: power supply, ignition, main relay, programming permission.

Do-it-yourself ECU flashing

It is better to do ECU flashing at specialized service stations. There is all the necessary equipment to carry out such operations. But if you don’t trust specialists, or you just don’t want to spend extra money, we do everything ourselves.

You need to start by selecting programs (software) for a specific car model. You can download them on the Internet. There are no particular problems with this. You will need to purchase a microchip. It is sold in stores or auto repair shops that specialize in reflashing. Before you start work, you need to make sure that the car is in full working order.

  1. Extracting the block:
  2. remove the panel located above the center console;
  3. disconnect the battery;
  4. remove the clamps and unscrew the fastening nuts;
  5. remove the block together with the bracket;
  6. open the cover of the control unit, change the microcircuit;
  7. We install the laptop securely (during operation it should not move under any circumstances);

Reviews from car owners about the 87 hp engine.

Most reviews are positive.

Mostly problems occur due to low-quality fuel and lubricants. The engine may start to stall and run intermittently (floating idle, stalls, loss of power, etc.). In this case, the “Check Engine” malfunction icon (indicator) should light up on the instrument panel.

The engine pulls well at low end; on the highway, even with a full load, there is enough power. This is especially noticeable when compared with a Ford Focus automatic: engine capacity 1.6, power 100 horsepower. Granta drives more fun, Focus “deflates” after 80 km per hour. As for Focus - personal experience, I owned just such a car.

Tuning the VAZ-2114 engine - boosting and flashing the ECU | VAZ lovers club

Most of all domestic cars do not have powerful engines, and the VAZ-2114 is no exception. For this reason, many car owners strive to increase its power. To fully exploit all the capabilities of a gasoline engine, you should change the cylinder volume or boost the engine. True, there are other ways to increase horsepower, which will be discussed below.

Increase in cylinder displacement

The most reliable and most proven way to improve the acceleration characteristics of all cars is considered to be changing the volume of a given part. In fact, everything is very simple here, since you only need to bore the piston, then slightly modify the intake manifold and change the crankshaft.

True, to perform such work requires special tools, equipment and knowledge. To bore the piston, high-tech equipment is needed, but before that, accurate calculations must be made and dimensions must be observed.

In the event that a part is ground down a couple of millimeters more than required, then there can be no talk of a positive result. Such machines are located in special workshops, so this method is not suitable for independent tuning of the VAZ-2114.

Do-it-yourself equipment for flashing a VAZ ECU - what kind will you need?

As the sad experience of some car owners shows, not everything that comes off the assembly line is gold. In addition to the disappointing statistics of various parts with manufacturing defects, modern realities have added one more item - electronics. Electronic equipment often has imperfections that can make driving a vehicle very difficult. The main blow, as expected, is borne by the control unit. It is about the ECU and how its firmware and flashing is carried out that will be discussed.

Results

Most Grant owners switched to them from previous AvtoVAZ products. Granta, Priora and Kalina are almost identical cars, the only difference is “in the filling”, and the ancestors of these engines were installed on the VAZ-2108.

By modern standards, the engines are reliable and should not cause trouble to their owners.

At the end of last week, we visited a completely fresh Lada Granta, which we did chip tuning. Engine 1.6 with 8 valves and 87 hp. The exhaust system was replaced with a kit from the Stinger, so Euro-2 firmware was required with modified fuel supply schedules, OZ, etc.

Lada Granta cars were equipped with M74 units with K-line or CAN interfaces. We will program this unit by removing it from the car and connecting it on the table. What’s noteworthy is that the unit has a CAN bus, but “wanted” to be programmed only via K-Line.

For work we will use the original J2534 Openport 2.0 adapter, a universal Combiloader cable and a bootloader from the same manufacturer.

How does the electronic unit on Grant work?

Before making changes to the car's firmware or performing diagnostics, you need to consider the basic principles. As much as some would like to jump right into making practical changes, you need to understand how the electronic “brain” works.

Any computing system, be it an ECU or a home PC, is a storage device. A home PC contains photos, videos, games, and work software. The computer constantly stores the user’s actions, errors, and data about software failures. All this is hidden among system files hidden from view.

The Lada Granta electronic control unit is also a computer, only the tasks it is designed to solve are more specific. There is also diagnostic information here. It is stored in RAM. This memory stores all the data that comes from various sensors. Information is stored until the block calculates everything it needs for some actions, then the information is erased from memory.

When it comes to diagnostic information, the car owner must be very careful. RAM cannot operate without a power source.

The control unit is a mini computer with specialized functionality

However, in addition to the RAM, there are other memory blocks of the controller. They are completely independent of nutrition. The data stored in them is unchanged. Unchangeable until new firmware is updated. These are PROM and ERPZU.

The first chip stores all the firmware data that was made at the factory. All the original algorithms and operation schemes of all nodes are embedded here. All diagnostic information, calibration data, vehicle weight, engine power and other Grant parameters are also stored here.

The second chip stores anti-theft information. Here are the codes that are on the alarm keys. If the codes do not match, then Grant will not go.

Features of the ECU for the Lada Granta

The controller in this car has one feature. Thanks to it, there are enormous opportunities to make changes to algorithms and data.

A special feature is the CAN bus. The technologies used to transmit digital data are a highly complex system. However, it makes driving easier and improves reliability. This is achieved due to the higher speed of calculations based on information from sensors. A complex system in an ECM is a clear logical diagram. This makes it possible to eliminate failures in the electronic unit.

The bus uses broadcast technology to transfer data more efficiently. When additional sensors or other equipment appear, there is no need to make modifications to the firmware. This scheme allows you to increase the reliability of the control of vehicle components and saves wiring.

The bus allows you to combine a huge number of different sensors, control units and all sorts of systems without being tied to a specific control system in the engine. An immobilizer that runs on this bus can easily work with all devices.
