Background

As you know, August 2015 was marked by the presentation of the second Lada X-Ray concept car. It was then that the discussion regarding future wheels flared up. It must be admitted that the 15-inch wheels installed on the concept did not “look” at all on the car - they literally “sank” in the large wheel arches, which affected the proportionality of the entire car.

The debate was serious. AvtoVAZ representatives tried to prove the need for installing small wheels. They argued this by the fact that the Lada XRAY was originally developed as a front-wheel drive urban SUV, and not an SUV with a 4x4 layout. Consequently, its main “field of activity” is the city, where small cars are in the most advantageous position. And 15-inch wheels guaranteed X-Ray an acceptable turning radius, excellent traction and throttle response. In addition, the price aspect was not the least important, because the car was developed with an eye toward a buyer with an average income; accordingly, serious fluctuations in cost could not be allowed.

As a result, AvtoVAZ agreed with consumers and installed 16-inch wheels on the X-Ray.

But after the start of sales, all doubts disappeared - AvtoVAZ listened to potential buyers and equipped the car with 16-inch wheels. In addition, Oleg Grunenkov promised that the upcoming all-wheel drive version of the car will immediately receive 17th wheels.

Vesta Cross, SW Cross and Sport

The operating manual indicates only one size of permitted tires and wheels: 205/50 R17. And the OTTS indicates three acceptable sizes:

Starting from July 2, 2022, a note appeared in the OTTS for commercial modifications of Lada Vesta TS RU E-RU.AB58.00956 and subsequent ones (TS RU E-RU.AB58.00978, TS RU E-RU.AB58.00869 :

It turns out that the installation of tires 185/65 R15, 195/55 R16 and 205/50 R17 is allowed on Lada Vesta Cross, SW Cross and Sport, provided that the car’s OTTS does not contain a restriction on Cross and Sport (at the moment there is one only in OTTS for commercial modifications).

Lada XRAY Cross

The operating manual indicates only one size of permitted tires and wheels: 215/50 R17. And the OTTS specifies five acceptable sizes:

• 195/65 R15
• 185/65 R15
• 205/55 R16
• 205/50 R17
• 215/50 R17

There are no restrictions for the Cross version. It turns out that on the XRAY Cross you can legally install a different wheel size R17, as well as R16 or R15.

Parameters of factory wheels and tires Lada XRAY

The standard characteristics of tires and wheels are indicated in the instruction manual - these are options 195/65 R15 (91, H) or 205/55 R16 (91, H/V).

In addition, AvtoVAZ abandoned the practice of equipping basic versions of cars with stamped wheels. The X-Ray is initially equipped with castings, and the marketers of the Russian concern definitely got the design right - the 5-spoke wheels look very good.

Regarding tires, tires were initially planned to be supplied by Michelin. However, they chose to abandon the partnership with this brand, concluding a contract with BelShina OJSC, which has been cooperating with AvtoVAZ for a long time. According to the signed agreement, this company undertakes to supply AvtoVAZ with 100,000 tires.

Michelin - it was decided to refuse cooperation with this company in favor of BelShina OJSC.

Lada Granta Cross and Kalina Cross

The owner's manual specifies only one size of acceptable tires and wheels: 195/55R15. And the OTTS indicates the following permissible dimensions:

2. 175/65 R14
3. 185/60 R14
4. 185/55 R15
5. 195/55 R15
6. 195/50 R15 (only in OTTS Kalina)

There are no restrictions for the Cross version, however, when choosing wheel rims, take into account the size of the brake discs installed on the car. It turns out that you can legally install R14 or even R13 wheels on Granta/Kalina Cross.

What wheels and tires are suitable (compatibility)

Are you into tuning and have decided to buy bigger wheels? When choosing wheels, we recommend taking into account the parameters of standard wheels:

• full wheel diameter;
• rim offset (ET);
• rim width;
• wheel hub bolt pattern (4x100, like on Vesta). Wheels from previous VAZs (Grant, Priora, Kalina, etc.) will not work.

The full diameter of the wheel should not differ much from the factory one, otherwise the tires will touch the fender liners and the speedometer will show the wrong speed. The left tire compatibility table is built for 195/65 R15, and the right one is for 205/55 R16:

Green indicates the minimum deviation of the wheel diameter (up to 3 mm); Orange indicates a diameter deviation from 3 to 6 mm.

Which rim width rims are suitable for XRAY :

When installing tires or wheels that differ in parameters

from those recommended by the factory, you can:

• be refused warranty repair of the chassis;
• be stopped by a traffic police inspector, who has the right to draw up a report on the car’s non-compliance with the requirements of the Technical Regulations;

Options for replacing wheels and tires on Lada X-Ray

Although AvtoVAZ met customers halfway by installing 16-inch wheels, many people find them not entirely appropriate. But before purchasing new ones, you should familiarize yourself with a number of nuances.

The choice of discs is huge; you can find copies with the same parameters, but with an overhang 1-2 millimeters more or less. It is not possible to list all the options.
