THERE is a fairly common misconception that a station wagon can carry heavy loads that a sedan or hatchback cannot. In fact, the gain is only in the volume of cargo, and the difference in carrying capacity, if we talk about the compact class, as a rule, does not exceed a couple of tens of kilograms. The Priora station wagon has a carrying capacity at the level of its Western counterparts - 505 kg. But compared to its brothers - the sedan and hatchback - it increased by only 15 kg.
However, even because of this small difference, the designers had to slightly change the suspension settings. And as a result... the car's driving performance has become worse.
...Roads in the Kaliningrad region, as in any other part of Russia, are far from ideal. However, the station wagon's suspension copes with potholes more or less tolerably. But a series of gentle “waves” on the asphalt made our car sway so much that it was time to stock up on seasickness pills. Actually, this is a long-standing disease of models of the “tenth” family, but the “Priora” sedans and hatchbacks have already recovered from it. And here’s a surprise – on the station wagon, the chronic illness made itself known again. The reason is the unsuccessfully selected characteristics of the springs and shock absorbers. Therefore, in more or less serious turns, the Priora does not perform well and reluctantly reacts to the rotation of the steering wheel - first it almost completely selects the suspension travel, and only then with a strong trim on board it goes into a turn.
Representatives of AvtoVAZ did not argue with this opinion about the driving performance of the station wagon. We agreed that it is necessary to improve the behavior of the car on the road, to more carefully select the characteristics of springs and shock absorbers - according to engineers, this work is already underway.

When analyzing geometric parameters, it should be understood that some of them, such as the wheelbase, remain unchanged, while others will depend on the type of body.
The general characteristics of the car are as follows (with the exception of the coupe body):
- wheelbase - 2475 mm (for sedan cars - minus 5 mm);
- front wheel track - 1440 mm;
- rear wheel track - 1410 mm.
Car dimensions
A car with a hatchback body has the following individual characteristics:
- total length of the car - 3905 mm;
- front overhang - 770 mm;
- rear overhang - 660 mm.
The Priora variant with station wagon and sedan bodies has the following characteristics:
- total length of the car - 4040 mm;
- front overhang - 740 mm;
- rear overhang - 830 mm.
A car with a coupe body has the following indicators:
- the total length of the car is 4210 mm in the basic version or 4243 mm in the more expensive version;
- wheelbase - 2492 mm.
But the manufacturer does not indicate the car’s overhangs as a sportier option.
Analyzing the presented indicators, the Lada Priora with a hatchback body is better than other options that allow the use of a ground clearance of 165 mm. With a short body, a large wheelbase allows for good cross-country ability. The only warning for the driver is the need to carefully park near high curbs, especially if the car is fully loaded.
Difficult to drive off-road
A car with a coupe body, due to its long wheelbase and large front overhang, cannot be used as a conqueror of forest roads and country lanes. This is still a purely asphalt car. At the same time, you need to be careful about both large potholes and overcoming artificial bumps. Priora has no protruding elements or inconveniently placed components that could negatively affect the maintenance of ground clearance.

This configuration has a touch screen, like on Kalina, we will not pay special attention to it. The instrument panel has also not changed very much: on the left is the tachometer, below it is the temperature sensor indicator, and on the right is the speedometer. Between them is an on-board computer, such as on the 2nd Kalina. Everything is clear, simple and ergonomic.
Also included in the package is air conditioning, electric mirrors (heated), fog lights, and two power windows. The steering wheel has been modified, it looks almost the same as that of the Granta, and the panel has a conveniently located “hands-free” button that works via Bluetooth. One of the significant advantages is the heated windshield - an excellent option for the Russian climate. The gearbox is unchanged. In general, the restyling did not cause negative emotions, although car enthusiasts expected more.
Interior
The high level of ergonomics also did not cause any complaints. Finishing materials, relatively inexpensive, but of sufficient quality, are combined according to color scheme and make the interior of the car cozy and relaxing. Italian designers used the finishing tone in a double, layered version. The upper tier of the cabin is decorated with light-colored materials, while the lower tier is decorated with darker materials. There is no contrasting transition between these two levels; one color replaces the other smoothly, in halftones. In fact, the entire interior trim is done in a two-tone version, which creates the impression of integrity. The driver's door armrest is equipped with semi-automatic power window control buttons, and there is also a joystick for adjusting the exterior rear-view mirrors. All buttons are designed in an anti-press format; accidental touches will not turn them on.

"Lada Priora" is sold in the basic "norm" configuration, which includes: an airbag for the driver, electric power steering, central locking with a remote signal, a steering column with a height adjuster, an electric two-position drive for front door windows, an on-board computer, a software immobilizer, electronic clock, rear seat headrests, rear seatback with armrests, headlight range control.
The VAZ Priora is equipped with a modern heating and ventilation system, which allows you to maintain a given microclimate in the cabin, and also ensures instant defogging of the windows. Although fogging is extremely rare, since all the windows in the car are athermal, and the rear one is electrically heated. Active safety is not provided in the “norm” configuration; the ABS system is installed on the car in the luxury configuration (since 2008). Front suspension
The gearbox is 5-speed, with a reinforced clutch mechanism oriented towards a torque of 145 Nm. The gearbox uses sealed bearings with increased service life. The latest modification of the vacuum booster allows you to significantly reduce the effort when pressing the brake pedal and increases the efficiency of the entire braking system of the car. The front suspension is calibrated to include coil springs and shock absorbers, selected in the optimal combination. The shape of the spirals used was changed quite radically - from cylindrical springs they turned into barrel-shaped ones, but the effect of this metamorphosis has not yet manifested itself. However, despite the fact that the approach to the issue was almost scientific-experimental, an impressive result was still obtained: the running of the car became soft and smooth. The anti-roll bars of the front suspension also played a role.
Geometry violations
Different cars can have completely different values between CTs. Domestic models, such as Priora, Niva, 2106, 2107, 21099 and 2110, as a rule, have their own values. Manufacturers of foreign cars Peugeot, Opel, Nexia, Lanos may set other values.
The geometry of the body can be disrupted for a number of reasons. As a rule, most problems arise during active use of the car on roads with uneven surfaces, regularly overcoming obstacles and due to accidents.
Depending on the reason that influenced the design change, the standard values between CT scans are also transformed. In other words, if a car like a Peugeot 605 or Lanos accidentally hits a solid obstacle, the suspension takes the brunt of the impact. But other elements of the body are also deformed, taking on the influence of physical force. This happens in most cases gradually and unnoticed by the owner.
The incentive to carry out a qualified inspection usually appears before purchasing a used car. The buyer, fearing to be deceived, tries to thoroughly check all the shortcomings of the car. Determining the distances between CT scans helps him figure out whether the Priora he bought was in an accident or not.
And in general, the check will allow you to find out how the same Priora was operated throughout the entire time. In rare cases, the dimensions between CT scans are diagnosed in order to determine the quality of repairs carried out on the body.

What you need to know when installing or replacing spacers
To ensure safety at the work site, wheel chocks will be needed to prevent the vehicle from moving, putting people at risk. It is mandatory to fix the jack in a vertical position without any deviation at an angle to prevent the machine from falling. Other safety rules that must be followed include:
- never do work alone. There should be at least one person who can help with the individual steps of disassembling the vehicle and putting parts back into place. For example, one person simply cannot cope with removing a spring, but a second or even third person will always hold the car and help pull out the necessary unit;
- When performing work outdoors after precipitation, it is better to place a board or other solid object under the jack. The best option is to carry out all work on a hard and level surface such as concrete or asphalt;
- there should be a first aid kit nearby (including the car itself) to provide immediate assistance;
- When placing the vehicle on a jack, be sure to put it in first gear and turn on the handbrake - this eliminates the risk of wheel movement;
- Before climbing under the car, after installing the jack, you need to check the stability by rocking from side to side. If the car has not fallen, work can begin.
It is not recommended to use homemade spacers, as they are most often made with a gross violation of technology. Similarly, the use of “refurbished” products is unacceptable. Before changing the clearance, you will need to measure its value so that there is not too much difference from the passport parameters. Increasing the distance between the bottom and the road cannot improve driving performance if the vehicle was not originally designed for off-road use.
There is a small legislative aspect: when insuring a vehicle, exactly the factory parameters are indicated, from which you cannot deviate, since in the event of an insured event, a refusal may occur due to a deliberate departure from the factory settings by changing the parameters of the car. You can increase the ground clearance using spacers to ensure comfortable driving conditions on an existing car.
Tuning
Like all VAZ models, the LADA Priora Universal (VAZ 2171) can be easily tuned, with the help of which it can be transformed into a completely different car, unlike the production one. In this case, changes can be made to almost all nodes.
The easiest way to implement changes is in the station wagon's interior. It is enough to change the original upholstery material to a more textured and brighter color, and also decorate the dashboard and door panels with original metal or wooden (imitation of precious wood) inserts. The Priora will also be given more solidity by replacing the standard front seats with Recaro seats. The salon will immediately acquire individuality.
Station wagon styling
You can completely change the exterior of the VAZ 2171 Priora station wagon by:
- glass tinting;
- installation of new thresholds and aerodynamic body kits;
- use of forged wheels and low-profile tires;
- tuning of front optics and radiator grille.
