It is positive that AvtoVAZ has begun active work with its dealerships on rebranding, which concerns not only the external and internal design of buildings and repair areas. Customer service functions are also undergoing a qualitative change, which is good news, because the attitude towards the brand of the leading domestic automaker largely depends on this.

Primrose, Snow Queen and Peanut: remembering the paints and colors of Soviet cars

Despite the relatively small range of cars in the USSR, the color range of cars in the Land of the Soviets surprised from time to time not only with the unusual shades, but also with the type of paint! Our review today includes not only ordinary enamels, but also the spectacular “metallics” that were used to paint Ladas and Muscovites.

The first Soviet passenger cars of the pre-war years corresponded in color scheme to the concept of the great automobile industrialist of the early last century, Henry Ford: both the famous “black funnel” and the less ominous GAZ-M1 “emkis”, with rare exceptions, were painted black. And the government ZISs, of course, were painted similarly. The “nomenklatura-official” color scheme looked quite appropriate, but the still rare traffic flow from this looked rather dull and monotonous. Occasionally we came across “emkas” with a dark green or light gray body, and brighter “spots on wheels” were practically not found in the USSR until the forties.

And only after the Second World War ended, the traffic flow in Soviet cities was full of unprecedented colors, because “Victory” appeared on the streets. Unlike its predecessor, the new model was painted in different colors - several shades of beige and green, coffee, blue, gray.

The most unusual were cars painted in turquoise and pistachio colors, and this was not a trade name for the shade, but an official designation in the “Pobeda Car Body Finish Standards,” approved by the USSR Minister of Automotive Industry. But there simply were no black Victories: this “official nomenclature” body color became the prerogative of more prestigious cars - the ZIS-110 and GAZ-12 ZIM.

“Government” cars were painted with nitro enamels in seven (!) layers with intermediate polishing of each of them. In addition to the traditional black color, although rare, there were cars painted gray, and cars with a two-color body were even sent for export! However, for most citizens of the USSR, ZIM was associated with a gloomy black color.

...although there were also such bright and two-tone color options!

The “People’s” Moskvich-400-420, like its modernized version 401-420, did not differ much from the Pobeda in color scheme - all the same soft pastel shades characteristic of European cars of the forties. Dark gray, dark beige and blue-green - that’s, perhaps, the entire “palette” from which you could usually conditionally choose “your” body color when buying a Moskvich.

Everything changed with the start of production of the GAZ-M21. Despite the fact that most of the new Volgas flashing along the streets were painted in a single-color body color (and a rather calm one - gray, beige, white, etc.), the color scheme developed at GAZ included not only a wide variety of bright shades, but also a two-tone painting available at additional cost.

Four options were offered for dividing surfaces by color: for example, a roof of one color and the bottom of another, or a roof with stamping of one color, and the remaining parts of another. Twelve color combinations ensured complete uniqueness - the chances of meeting a second “two-color” car in the stream were slim. Especially when you consider that over the 14 years of the “twenty-first” conveyor life, over 160 articles (!) of colors were used to paint the GAZ-21 body, and the shades could differ noticeably from batch to batch. This was explained by the imperfection of technology in the production of automotive enamels, which is why the plant received paints with significant differences in shade from the standard denomination. That is why GAZ was forced to introduce new articles. Therefore, the same tone, depending on the year of manufacture and even the batch of cars, could differ noticeably in shade, which is why the very concept of “body color” for the GAZ-21 was rather vague and conditional.

The two-tone paint, like the styling of the GAZ-21 body, evoked associations with American cars of those years. And, I must admit, the bright shades and multi-colored colors looked very appropriate on the Volga - no worse than on Ford and Chevrolet sedans of those years.

Both the paint scheme and many of the colors of the Volga seem to be borrowed from these American cars of the fifties. Or not as if...

Unlike Pobeda, GAZ-21 was also painted black - as you might guess, such Volgas served officials and party nomenklatura, and “private owners” got them in exceptional cases.

Thus, the Soviet pilot-cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin drove a black GAZ-21. It is interesting that the “Gagarin” Volga, with a monochromatic black body standard for “nomenklatura” cars, differed from other cars in its light blue interior trim - an unusual combination for the “twenty-first”, it must be admitted. Two-tone body painting was also available for new MZMA models (402/403). At least on export Muscovites there were contrasting combinations of the upper part of the body and the sidewalls (below the moldings).

The Drom.ru website has published a preliminary version of AvtoVAZ’s production plan for 2022. This document must be approved at a meeting of the company's board of directors on December 9 of this year. This information was later denied by the company's press service.

According to the preliminary version of the production plan, next year they plan to produce 64 thousand Lada Vesta sedans in Izhevsk, and closer to the fall, a regular station wagon and a station wagon in the Cross version will be put on the assembly line, but in total only 7.5 thousand of these cars will be made. The production volume of Lada XRAY will increase by one and a half times - up to 30.3 thousand cars.

The main model of AvtoVAZ will remain the Lada Granta: 72.8 thousand sedans and hatchbacks are going to be produced in Togliatti and Izhevsk. The production plan for Kalina is 18.5 thousand units, the production of Priora will also continue (11.2 thousand cars), but 2022 will be the last year for this model.

Production volumes of Renault Logans and Sanderos in Tolyatti will increase to 60 thousand cars, but the plan for the production of Datsuns (16 thousand) and Almeras (12.3 thousand) has been noticeably reduced compared to the current year. The production of Nissan Tiida hatchbacks in Izhevsk has long been discontinued, and there are no plans for the Sentra sedan for next year, but, as Drom.ru notes, the representative office of the Japanese company claims that the model will not leave the Russian market.

In 2022, the number of produced Lada 4x4 SUVs will decrease to 24.3 thousand units, and the GM-AvtoVAZ joint venture plans to produce 33.9 thousand copies of the Chevrolet Niva model.

A small number of cars will be produced by the subsidiaries Lada Sport and VIS-Auto, the Grant assembly will continue in Chechnya, and the recently resumed operation will continue to operate.

The range of products from Kazakhstan, where Ladas are made for the local market, should expand next year to include the Vesta and XRAY models. The production of Lada Granta in Egypt will continue its work.

What does this mean for our AvtoVAZ? At first glance, this is the final loss of “our national identity”, because in just four years the familiar and, in principle, very successful models will leave the assembly line and the market: “Granta” (in production since 2004), “Niva” ( produced since 1977) and the youngest of all - “Vesta” (since 2015). And although their sales are at a very good level (last year, 2022 - 126.1 thousand units, 107.3 thousand and 29.1 thousand, respectively), one must understand that each of these models is built on its own platform - as a rule, very outdated (in the first two cases) - and for the production of each you need to keep a special conveyor thread. AvtoVAZ has special assembly lines for Grants, Nivas and Vestas. And another universal one, where they produce very different cars of different brands (Lada Largus, Lada XRAY, Renault Logan and Sandero). Over the past year, about 120 thousand cars were assembled there (not counting assembly kits that are supplied to other enterprises in different countries).

In principle, you can put other models on the same line, the main thing is that they must have one, common platform. Then production will be profitable! So the essence of the reform that is coming at AvtoVAZ is the complete and final transfer of all models to the single French CMF-B platform. The newest “European” Logan/Sandero family has already been released on this basis, as well as the Duster SUV, which they promise to show us in a month.

Alas, this is a fact: any attempt today to create your own original platform specifically for models from Tolyatti is pointless and is doomed to failure from the very beginning. Very expensive (from 2 billion euros), economically devastating if the annual production is less than 1 million cars. But a successful modular modern platform can become the basis for creating a wide variety of cars. For example, four dozen models are built on the MQB platform from the VW concern (Audi A1, A3, Q3; all SEAT models; Škoda Karoq, Kodiaq, Octavia, Superb; Volkswagen Caddy, Golf, Jetta, Passat, Tiguan, Teramont, etc. ). So, on the other hand, there’s nothing wrong with the fact that both the Russian AvtoVAZ plant and the Romanian Dacia plant will create their own (very different, I hope!) models on the same platform; There is a huge field for the imagination of engineers, engineers and designers here.

The car is smaller in size than the Xray model and has an expressive appearance, which is characterized by both power and swiftness. In addition, the design contains all the signature features of the cars currently produced by the company.

The interior in its architecture and decoration will be very close to the Xray interior. The company notes that XCODE will receive rich equipment for domestic models. Among the systems and equipment planned for installation now it is necessary to note:

If the car does go into production (naturally, very vaguely resembling a futuristic concept), then it will be the first domestic supercar.

Largus FL

The restyled, or more precisely the facelifted, version of the 2019 Largus will have a design in the style of the Vesta and Xray models. Therefore, the updated version will change the shape of the headlights, wings, front bumper, and radiator grille. There are few changes in the interior; they will only affect the use of more anti-wear fabric upholstery and the use of additional sound-absorbing inserts.

Largus will continue to retain five and seven-seat configurations, as well as the currently installed power units. Such small changes are due to the fact that the company considers the model to be quite successful and therefore does not require deep modernization.

The new compact car is the company's light commercial vehicle, the production of which will be launched in 2022.

In the AvtoVAZ model range, the Van should become an addition to the Largus car. The new product is based on the Renault Dokker heel design, but the appearance will match the company's existing X-shaped style.

The technical characteristics of the vehicle will be almost identical to the Dokker, but the main advantage of the domestic truck will be a lower price due to the use of Russian-made materials and components.

Vesta

The planned restyling of the 2022 Vesta, first of all, added style to the design due to a greater number of curves, protrusions and interesting transitions. The front of the car is characterized by its signature X-shaped style and embossed hood.

The interior has changed due to the use of higher quality materials in the decoration. The touch monitor of the multifunctional complex has also expanded and therefore become more convenient. The choice of power units will not change and will be presented in two petrol versions of 106 and 122 horsepower. With both engines it is possible to install a 5-speed automatic transmission or a 5-speed manual transmission. The new product will be presented in seven trim levels, with the most affordable costing 550 thousand rubles.

Non-warranty paint defects

AvtoVAZ gives a 6-year warranty on body parts against through corrosion. This period starts from the date of purchase of the car by the first owner.

The following defects are not considered a warranty case:

• significant difference in the thickness of the Lada Vesta paintwork;
• the presence of so-called saffron milk caps on body elements;
• corrosion of metal in places where chips form;
• peeling varnish;
• spray, varnish drips, craters on the surface of the paintwork.
