Recently, six months have passed since I became the owner of a LADA X-Ray Lux. I never thought that I would ever buy a domestically produced vehicle.

During this time, more than 8,000 km have been covered. To be more precise, my wife and I spent 17 days in the car and moved no more than 60 km per hour, without stopping for 8 hours a day.

During this time, we sat in hot traffic jams, drove through melted snow, ice, got caught in an autumn downpour, and even tried transport on snowy winter roads. In general, a complete set. I won’t say that this is a lot, but I think we can already draw conclusions about the vehicle.

Our first family car was a Nexia. When buying, we chose between it, Kalina and 2115, but the choice remained with Nexia due to popular interest.

Now times, the situation in the world has changed, progress has reached our VAZ and we have made our choice in its favor. Of course, you can argue endlessly whether this is a good car or not, diligently looking for pros and cons in it, but I think there will be no consensus.

A Russian car is made for Russian roads. The engine sump from below is protected from damage by steel protection, and the engine itself consumes 92-octane gasoline. Servicing the car is quite simple. In general, the car is practical. The budget hatchback crossover has a good chance of achieving even greater success than it has now. Let us remind you that sales of Xray began in the winter of last year, and during this time the model entered the top 10 of the Russian market. In addition, the car itself is nice, thanks to AVTOVAZ chief designer Steve Mattin. Lada XRAY will no longer be called a “zhigulyatina”.

Improved Control

The steering wheel is made well, it is convenient and comfortable to hold. It has the right thickness and comfortable tides (there weren’t any of these on the Opel). Bold plus – height adjustment, minus – no reach adjustment.

Compared to the Astra, the steering wheel in the X-Ray Prestige is somewhat more comfortable. On the previous car, I always tried to raise it higher, but ran into the limiter. There is no such problem here - I adjusted the steering wheel to suit my height and needs. There are multifunction functions, but the tracks do not switch. It's upsetting, but not too much. In general, it’s a big plus for the manufacturers for the performance of the steering wheel.

Now I’ll tell you about the pedal assembly. Everything here is somewhat ambiguous. I like the soft grip. There are no complaints about the gas pedal; the response to pressing is quite fast. The brake pedal is ordinary and does not cause any impression at all. Cons – the brake is located a little high – you need to get used to it. The dimensions of the pedal assembly are quite suitable for my size 44.

The steering column switches are well made. There are also no complaints about the climate control unit. The buttons on the air conditioner on the previous car were somewhat more pleasant and softer in tactile sensations. In general, for everything together you can put a small minus, but mainly because of the clutch pedal.

Right to certainty

A safe car is one that is visible on the road. LADA XRAY will never get lost in traffic, thanks to bright LED daytime running lights. The LED strip also performs a styling function, highlighting the chrome “X” of the front end.

Summing up

LADA X-Ray Prestige is a good vehicle. If we compare it with the previous car, it’s a little worse, but taking into account the class and cost, everything is at a fairly high level.

Advantages - excellent visibility, optimal dimensions (subjectively), good equipment, external characteristics and ground clearance.

The disadvantages include mediocre behavior on the road, incomprehensible plastic, an almost unreadable Logan dashboard with no dial indicators for fuel temperature, as well as some economic miscalculations - the light control is located on the steering column switch, and the seat heating buttons are in the blind spot.

However, after a short period of driving, I can confidently say, taking into account the class and cost of the vehicle, that the car was a great success and justifies its cost one hundred percent.

Disadvantages you can ignore

Of course, a car has its shortcomings, you can’t live without them. Some of them I mentioned above, some of them are insignificant. I will note those that upset me.

The first minus is the chairs. I won’t say that they are bad, but they are as simple as a stool – Logan seats. The interior trim is cheap plastic. In winter, until the car starts to warm up, it smells cold. There is no finishing on the doors - they are completely made of plastic. There's not even fabric.

There is no plastic trim on the trunk sill. Questionable savings considering that the handles are made of aluminum. There is also no armrest.

You can't switch tracks on the steering wheel - this is a big minus. The multifunction steering wheel only allows you to answer calls and adjust the volume. They say that third-party firmware can solve this problem, but I have not tried it.

The quality of sound insulation is not bad, but at speeds over 110 km per hour, low-frequency noise appears in the car. The problem is solved by an additional ShVI. Another disadvantage is that when you pour liquid with a smelly smell under the washer reservoir cap, it splashes out, so the cabin smells like washer fluid. The problem can be easily solved - just don’t pour smelly washers under the plug.

Small and impressive, with a high silhouette and at the same time swift.
The compact hatchback LADA XRAY is designed in a specific SUV style and is classified as a small class crossover. It is precisely these sports-utilitarian cars that are popular in our countries due to the expressiveness of their forms and functionality. When developing the machine, the designers managed to achieve a reasonable combination of innovative technologies, the highest level of safety and environmental friendliness. The LADA XREY crossover was created as a city crossover. Small dimensions, excellent maneuverability and excellent dynamics allow the driver of such a car to feel confident in heavy traffic. The car has modest external dimensions but has good capacity thanks to a well-thought-out interior with plenty of space for small items. It has everything provided for comfortable accommodation of the driver and passengers.

Visibility, dimensions and light

Visibility of the vehicle is excellent, it is much better than in Astra. In my previous car there were problems with this, I even almost had an accident. The mirrors are not bad, the X-Ray has built-in repeaters - this is a plus.

As for the dimensions of the car, my opinion is subjective. I don’t like big cars and I don’t like being cramped with other passengers, so I prefer small hatchbacks, which, alas, are not very popular in our market. Astra was big for me. Its width and poor visibility combined with small clearance created significant restrictions when choosing a parking space. X-Ray is an ideal option for me in this regard.

In front there is exactly enough space for two people to stay comfortably, and no more. For me, there is enough space in the back, but it can be a bit cramped for three passengers. X-Ray Prestige has ideal conditions for my needs.

As for the light, there are LED DRLs, they are bright and visible from afar. Rear optics - parity. For visibility and the size of the vehicle, solely in my subjective opinion, I give it a big plus.

Exterior of the model

The hatchback body design is designed in the updated corporate style of LADA, called X-Style due to its characteristic features. The prototype for it was a concept developed by Steve Mattin's team and demonstrated to the public at the 2012 International Motor Show in Moscow. The exterior of the crossover fits perfectly into the urban landscape of a modern metropolis and has a number of features:

• The side surfaces of the wings and doors have characteristic stampings that give them relief.
• The radiator grille, smoothly flowing into slightly raised headlights, forms a sign of corporate identity.
• The original design of the rear lights and the unusual method of glazing (with a hidden frame) help avoid the feeling of massiveness.

The rounded lines of the body smoothly flow from one part to another, ensuring the unity of the image and making it harmonious and complete.

Model interior

The developers of the interior of the Lada XRay crossover were based on the principle: “The car is a second home for the driver and passengers.” All interior elements without exception are subject to this:

• The front panel has convenient niches for small items, retractable cup holders and a glove box with a cooling circuit.
• Plastic panels on the doors have fabric inserts and spacious pockets.
• The trunk has brackets for installing nets, niches are located behind the wheel arches, and under the flat floor there is a compartment for storing various small items.

The interior is made transformable: the back of the rear seat is split in a 40/60 ratio, which allows you to transport long items. If necessary, the sofa folds, which, in combination with the large opening of the fifth door, allows you to transport large items.

An important advantage is the design

If we talk about design, the model is quite bright and stylish, especially for the LADA brand. Compared to previous models, this is a completely different level. Maybe I was lucky, but all the components of the interior and exterior fit smoothly and neatly.

There are no creaks either in thirty-degree heat or ten-degree frost. There are no jambs either in the field or in the trunk.

The wiring is in its place, everything is neatly covered with electrical tape, all the clips are present. Under the hood everything is like a foreign car - neat tubes, hoses, cable ducts. Perhaps I got excited, but just in case, I wrapped a couple of hoses with electrical tape, which I was worried about.

Compared to premium cars, the X-Ray Lux is inferior in capacity and comfort. The interior in the back is somewhat cramped, but the trunk, without folding the seat, can accommodate four 16-piece wheels. This is a good indicator for such a hatchback.

Technical characteristics of Lada XRay Crossover

The car is designed for use in difficult road conditions, it has good dynamics and excellent handling. The crossover's increased ground clearance and energy-intensive suspension provide a fairly high level of cross-country ability. The vehicle is characterized by maneuverability due to the use of an engine subframe and gas-filled shock absorbers.

Particular attention is paid to safety issues; a number of active systems are installed on the car:

• ESC - directional stability.
• ABS - anti-lock braking system.
• BAS - Brake Assist.
• TCS - traction control.
• EBD - brake force distribution.

The LADA XRAY crossover is equipped with airbags for the driver and front passenger. This, coupled with belts equipped with a pretensioner, allows you to avoid injuries during emergency braking or an accident. The rear doors are equipped with locking mechanisms, and the seats are equipped with ISOFIX systems for installing child seats.

The hatchback is equipped with an automatic or manual transmission. The five-speed robotic gearbox combines the advantages of an automatic transmission and a manual transmission. Under normal conditions, gear shifting occurs without human intervention; in difficult situations, the driver takes control of its operation. On the one hand, this allows you to save the resource of the power unit, on the other hand, it provides the ability to get out of snowdrifts and puddles.

The machine is equipped with two types of gasoline engines that comply with Euro 5 environmental standards and have the following characteristics:

• Working volume: 1596 and 1774 cm3.
• Maximum power: 106 and 122 hp. With.
• Torque: 148 and 170 Nm.

On machines with a more powerful engine, it is possible to install both mechanical and automated transmissions. The 106-horsepower engine is mounted exclusively on manual gearboxes.

The 1.8 liter 5MT version of the model has the best dynamic performance, capable of reaching speeds of up to 185 km/h, and will accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 10.4 seconds. At the same time, the car can run on 92 or 95 gasoline and consumes no more than 7.2 l/100 km in the combined cycle.

Handling and overall impressions

During this time, the car never broke down, there were no “surprises” from the technical side. I am pleased with the low fuel consumption, the presence of various useful and comfortable options (in the LUX Prestige package), which were not available on previous cars.

I like the way the heated seats work - it works gently, doesn’t fry the butt like eggs in a frying pan, but simply gently heats it to a pleasant temperature, then turns off and turns on again. And so on all the time.

A special plus is worth giving to the stabilization system. I don’t know why people are complaining about it, everything works correctly for me (maybe the requests are small). In winter, during snowfall, I calmly overtook cars on the highway at speeds of up to 100 km per hour, overcoming the dividing snow strip, without fear of skidding or turning around. The car obeys the steering wheel and drives as if on rails while the icon flashes on the display.

The same situation occurs when accelerating on a slippery road (on ice, slush). By pressing the pedal to the maximum, the car simply picks up speed in a straight line. The car holds its own speed, there is no need to steer.

Very good aerodynamics. It is quite comfortable to move at speeds of up to 140 km per hour.

But at higher speeds, distinct noises , it seems that you are taking off, and driving becomes uncomfortable and tiring. The windshield does not get very dirty with various bugs and dirt from neighboring cars, but the rear window gets dirty at any speed and in any weather: in the rain - with dirt, and in dry weather - with dust.

In general, handling is not bad. There are no super powers here, but the handling is no worse than in the Lacetti, adjusted for height and ground clearance. It takes turns perfectly. Among the shortcomings, I can only mention impacts on the steering wheel, which are felt when turning in places with sharp irregularities - holes with sharp edges, joints of slabs and others.

Braking and dynamics are not bad. ABS and all sorts of electronic assistants make it possible to get maximum efficiency from pressing the brake.

As for the comfort of driving on a highway with good coverage, at 110 km per hour the car maintains 3000 rpm. These are excellent indicators - the golden mean between comfort, speed and fuel consumption (about 8 liters). A more economical mode – up to 90 km per hour (consumption is within 7 liters). The fastest comfortable speed is 140 km per hour.

Options and prices

LADA XRAY is produced by the Togliatti automobile plant in eleven modifications, which differ in the level of equipment. The manufacturer offers three main configuration options for the crossover:

• Standard. The basic version is equipped with LED running lights, a security alarm and an immobilizer.
• Classic. It is produced in two versions: with and without air conditioning, it is possible to disable the passenger airbag.
• Comfort. There are three trim levels and in the maximum version the car is equipped with an audio system, a multifunction steering wheel and central locking with remote control.
• Luxe. Two options. The car is equipped with exterior mirrors with direction indicators and 16-inch alloy wheels.
• Luxe/Prestige. There are three versions, while the top version is equipped with rear view cameras, rain sensors and a climate control system.

The color range of LADA XRAY crossovers is varied: the basic equipment cars are mostly white (“Glacial”). For red, gray-beige, brown, black and silver metallics you will have to pay an additional 12 thousand rubles.

Technical breakdowns and shortcomings

During this time I had only one problem - a third-party alarm system. There was an error on the channel line. Under warranty, I replaced the module and uploaded new firmware. There have been no other technical problems so far. For 8000 km 200 grams were consumed. according to the oil dipstick. Considering my love for overtaking, I think this is a normal indicator.

The manufacturer considers 0.3% of fuel consumption to be the norm - up to approximately 2 liters per 10 thousand km.
