The Lada Granta family underwent an update last year: in particular, the front and rear parts of the car changed, and new options appeared. However, in addition to cosmetic changes, the model range of the family has also expanded: in addition to the already familiar sedan and liftback, a hatchback, station wagon and all-terrain station wagon called Lada Granta Cross have appeared. These models were not developed from scratch - they all came from the Kalina family, which they decided to completely abandon.

The most interesting model can be safely called the new Lada Granta Cross. This is a so-called off-road station wagon with increased ground clearance and additional plastic lining around the perimeter of the body. The new model is presented only with a front driven axle and two variants of the 1.6-liter engine. The ground clearance is 198 mm, which is 18 mm more than that of a regular Grant.

It is noteworthy that the entire family of updated Grants was shown and began selling in the fall of 2022, and only Granta Cross was delayed for almost a year.

The 2022 Lada Granta Cross is available with two 1.6-liter naturally aspirated petrol engines. The differences are that the “junior” engine has 8 valves (two per cylinder), and the “senior” one has 16 valves (4 for each cylinder). Power, therefore, also varies. The output of the standard 8-valve unit is 87 hp. at 140 Nm of torque. The engine only works with a 5-speed manual transmission. A more powerful engine with 16 valves produces 106 hp. with a thrust of 148 Nm. The manufacturer offers both a 5-speed manual transmission and a 5-speed “robot” in combination with this unit.

Otherwise, the car has a standard suspension with a MacPherson-type shock absorber strut at the front and a semi-independent torsion beam at the rear. The braking system, like most domestic cars, consists of disc elements in the front and drum elements in the rear. It is worth noting that compared to the Lada Kalina station wagon, the ground clearance of the Grant Cross has increased to 198 mm. For a car, this is an excellent indicator, since not all modern crossovers can boast the same ground clearance. But the wheelbase length of 2,476 mm provides a small amount of space in the station wagon's cabin. In addition, the manufacturer has allocated 360 liters for the luggage compartment. By the way, the backrest of the rear sofa folds in a 60/40 ratio, increasing the trunk to 675 liters.

The length of the car is 4,148 mm, which is 3 cm longer than the length of a regular station wagon, but this increase did not in any way affect the space inside the car, since the increase was obtained due to modified bumpers. The width is 1,700 mm, and the height is set at 1,560 mm, but this is with roof rails, which add an additional 22 mm to the model. By the way, the latter are available even in the basic configuration. Regardless of equipment and configuration, the vehicle’s weight is 1,160 kg. The fairly lightweight model provides additional fuel savings.

Dimensions

Lada Granta Cross is a subcompact five-seat all-terrain station wagon. It measures 4148 mm in length, 1560 mm in height, 1700 mm in width and 2476 mm between the axles. The ground clearance has been increased compared to the regular version. Despite its compact dimensions, there remains about 198 millimeters between the road surface and the bottom point of the underbody. The off-road modification platform has not received significant changes. There are also independent McPherson struts with a stabilizer bar at the front, and a semi-independent torsion beam at the rear. The main difference lies in the racks themselves. They are equipped with gas-filled double-action telescopic shock absorbers and higher springs, which provide an increase in ground clearance. Also worth noting are the unique silent blocks and steering. The size of the trunk, in the standard position, when loaded under the rear parcel shelf, is 360 liters. To transport large items, the rear seats can be sacrificed and you can get up to 670 liters.

Classic

The basic Classic package is available with an 87 hp power unit. The price of the model is stated at 616,000 rubles. In this configuration, the car is offered on 15-inch stamped wheels. External lighting is entirely LED. The side mirrors are equipped with turn signal repeaters, electrically heated and, like the door handles, are not painted in body color. Roof rails are installed as standard.

Robotic gearbox is not available. The main features of the Quest version are an electrically heated front windshield and the presence of rear parking sensors.

The maximum Luxe package is available only with a 106 hp engine. If the engine is paired with a manual transmission with five gears, the price is 682,900 rubles, and with a robotic gearbox - 707,900 rubles. In this version, the manufacturer has slightly improved the lighting - front fog lights, rain and light sensors have been added. The electrical package has been supplemented with rear electric windows, and the security system has been supplemented with cruise control.

More powerful engine with 106 hp. and 148 Nm of torque are also coupled to a five-speed manual gearbox, but its 0-100 km/h acceleration time is 10.8 seconds and its top speed is the same as the smaller version. At the same time, fuel consumption with this engine is reduced to 6.5 liters per 100 km. In addition, the motor interacts with a 5-speed robotic gearbox. At the same time, fuel consumption remains at the same level, but acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h increases to 12.2 seconds, and top speed decreases to 166 km/h.

The driver and front passenger will be able to conveniently control the main options. The only drawback of the interior is that budget materials are used for its decoration. But this makes the station wagon affordable for buyers. The dashboard has changed slightly. Sensors have become larger. The back row is quite comfortable. It can easily accommodate three adult passengers.

Competing models: is it worth buying?

The 2022 Lada Grant, like its predecessors, definitely has a cost advantage over imported cars. Thanks to the combination of an affordable price and good technical capabilities, this AvtoVAZ model has long been a sales leader in the automotive market.

The new Lada Granta is able to compete with the most popular models from the leaders of the automotive industry - Volkswagen Polo, Renault Logan, Nissan Almera, Kia Rio and Datsun on-DO.

AvtoVAZ products, despite high competition with imported cars, confidently retain the laurels of the leader in the domestic market. This means that the 2022 Lada Granta has every chance of becoming the next flagship of the domestic automotive industry.

Selecting the optimal Lada Granta Cross station wagon

Cross with eight-valve 1.6 (87 hp) and manual transmission in the basic Classic configuration costs 559,900 rubles. The surcharge for a 16-valve valve of the same volume is 15,000, for a “robot” – another 25 thousand. Red Aurum, like other metallics, will cost 6,000 rubles.

Having merged two models into a common family under the banner of restyling, AvtoVAZ got rid of the name Kalina. Now they are all Grants: hatchback, liftback, sedan and station wagon. The latter became the basis for the all-terrain version - Lada Granta Cross entered the market almost a year later than other modifications. For us, this is our first acquaintance with a representative of the updated line of the most affordable front-wheel drive vehicles from Tolyatti. To complete the picture, we took two cars: with a manual transmission and an AMT “robot”.

Before restyling, Kalina Cross existed in the VAZ range, and Granta is not very different from it. Thanks to this, she not only looked like the older Vesta, but also grew by 44 mm due to the front overhang extended by the bumper. The interior remained recognizably Kalinovsky, although the button illumination changed from green to white, and additional decor appeared around the central ventilation deflectors.

The ergonomic features are generally inherited. The steering column still does not have a reach adjustment. True, all Crosses are equipped with new front seats with height adjustment and poor lateral support. Alas, even in the lowest position you sit a little higher than you want. Visibility is excellent. But the build quality is traditionally inconsistent. In an attempt to close the window, you pull the window lifter button towards yourself and pull the entire block out of the armrest.

It is incorrect to compare head-on the same-named configurations of regular and elevated station wagons. For example, the top-end Luxe version of the Cross has parking sensors in the rear bumper and a light sensor. In the more democratic Comfort, the cross-country Granta is richer in climate control, which even in a single-zone version is more convenient than an air conditioner. You can roughly estimate that the surcharge for increased ground clearance by 18 mm, larger wheels and a practical body kit made of unpainted plastic is about thirty thousand rubles.

It’s a shame that for the Cross the stabilization system is not offered at all, while in any of the Grants it can be obtained by raising the level of equipment to the maximum Luxe Prestige. Cross is also deprived of a four-speed Jatco automatic transmission: all two-pedal cars are equipped with a modified AMT robot. We already met him at Vesta, but there he assists the 122-horsepower 1.8 engine. Granta has a different engine, and the displacement is two hundred cubic meters more modest.

On the outside, our two 16-valve station wagons produce 106 hp. absolutely the same. And in the cabin of a car with an AMT “robot”, the selector is only partially reminiscent of West’s. It has the same pad as in Vesta, but the lever itself and the podium are different. There is no parking position. The engine should be started in neutral, and can be turned off in gear. Then in the parking lot it is not necessary to secure the car with the handbrake.

The finished AMT gearbox works tolerably well. I liked her on Grant even more than on Vesta. When driving calmly, the “robosarai” is generally a good boy: it starts off confidently, quickly shifts up and is a little impudent, with a shift downwards. As the pace increases, pauses in switching increase, which are characteristic of all “robots” of this type, but this is not very annoying. With the creeping mode it became easier in traffic jams: release the brake - you roll. However, the clutch works with slippage, and Granta still protects it. After standing for a while, the clutch opens, and when gas is added, it closes with a slight delay.

Outside the asphalt, the “robot” does not cause much trouble. The clutch operates smoothly and it is convenient to control the traction. On developed terrain, there is a lack of an assistant when starting on a climb, which only regular Grants have. In order to move uphill without recoil, you have to assist the box with the parking brake lever. It is better not to allow one of the drive wheels to hang out, but to overcome the folds of the terrain while moving. Highly located bumpers do not give much reason to fear for their safety.

A station wagon with a manual drives about the same on rough roads. In theory, manual control allows you to manage traction more efficiently, but in practice, you can completely stall on a climb, which I was not able to do with the “robot”. And yet, it is the three-pedal Cross that leaves the most pleasant impression, allowing you to make full use of the engine’s capabilities.

In the city it’s easier to start on time and quickly integrate into the flow, and on the highway it’s easier to overtake. The cable mechanism is well tuned, the clarity of switching does not raise any questions. The accelerator drive is sensitive, the responsiveness is almost carburetor-like. I don’t see the point of paying even 25 thousand extra for a “robot”. According to statistics, Grants in general and Cross in particular are usually purchased with a manual transmission, and only every tenth buyer chooses two-pedal cars.

The ability of VAZ cars to drive differently, even if they belong to the same batch, has been repeatedly noted. Ours are managed the same way. The Kaluga electric power steering provides them with a light steering wheel with a clear zero position and a logical increase in reactive force. Both Ladas immediately respond to the steering wheel’s deflection with a roll, coming to the arc with a slight delay and turning slightly as it develops. Both begin to slide their front axles to the outside of the turn early due to the modest grip properties of the Pirelli Cinturato P1 tires.

But the two Grants slow down differently. The one with “mechanics” is disappointing with its weak brakes. The free play of the pedal is indecently large, the moment of operation is difficult to predict. The drive in a station wagon with a “robot” works much better. No differences were noticed in the suspension operation. Any of the Grants pleases with excellent smoothness and some kind of exorbitant energy intensity. At the same time, Granta Cross no longer suffers from the early response of shock absorbers on rebound, which is characteristic of the “cross” Kalina.

Apart from AvtoVAZ, no one else offers inexpensive “sheds”. The main competitor of the economic Grant is its own Largus, which was minimally updated in the summer. The most popular (41% of sales) is the Granta station wagon in the inexpensive Classic configuration for 505,500 rubles. The most popular Largus Classic is more expensive: 624–677 thousand. By the standards of the segment, the price difference is noticeable, but people are willing to pay extra for the more spacious Largus, which, based on the results of the first half of 2019, sells three and a half times better than the Granta.

Largus, like Granta, has a Cross version, and it accounts for as much as 38% of Largus sold. The upbeat Granta has not yet gained momentum, but the results of the first month suggest good potential. Moreover, the Grant Cross is taken at the top, albeit with “mechanics”. Well, we must not forget that crossovers accounted for 65% of sales of Kalina station wagons. Cross looks more elegant, and a couple of centimeters under the belly are not superfluous. So we can assume that subsequently at least half of all sold "sheds" of the Granta family will be cross-matched.
