Lada Vesta battery: replacement, selection, operation

Serial production of the Lada Vesta sedan began in the fall of 2015. The car replaced the Priora in the AvtoVAZ lineup. The prototype of this model was first officially presented back in 2012. The platform for the Lada Vesta was developed by AvtoVAZ specialists, borrowing some solutions from Renault. Production was established in Izhevsk. In 2022, serial assembly of the Lada Vesta station wagon began. At the time of writing, there are already quite a few different modifications and engines of this car. In this article we will look at how to select a Lada Vesta starter battery, for which we will use the battery selection service on our website.

What kind of battery should be in the Lada Vesta?

From the factory, all Vesta cars (including those with the H4M engine) are equipped with a standard battery. This battery is not original, but recommended by the manufacturer. If there is a need for replacement, you should learn or write down the ordering article in advance: 6CT 62VL.

This battery has the following characteristics:

Capacity62 Ah
EN600 A
PolarityReverse

It is allowed to install other batteries on Vesta, but the characteristics must be no less than those indicated in the table. Otherwise, the manufacturer will not be able to guarantee successful engine starting under extreme conditions.

Battery maintenance on Vesta - useful tips

It is important to understand that the stability of the battery on Vesta directly depends on how its maintenance will be organized. To extend the life of the device, you must follow the following recommendations:

  • if the battery discharges faster than in a couple of years, it is worth diagnosing the car;
  • You should regularly check the density of the electrolyte, its quantity and operating temperature;
  • if the density of the electrolyte is not normal, it must be diluted with distilled water or acid.
  • If you adhere to the above rules, the battery of the Lada Vesta model will work for a long time without any problems.

What to do if the battery drains quickly?

Like other car devices, the battery has its own resource and sooner or later it expires. If the starter does not turn, and the low charge lamp lights up on the instrument panel, this means that the battery is discharged and does not have enough power to function properly.

The main causes of discharge are:

  • short trips and frequent engine starts;
  • long trips at low speeds;
  • other devices are not turned off, such as a DVR or radio;
  • headlights are not turned off after a trip;
  • The battery life has expired;
  • broken or stretched alternator belt;
  • short circuit.

The simplest solution to avoid discharge is to replace the battery. However, in other cases, the tensioner must be repaired, or the alternator belt itself must be replaced. Without minimal knowledge, it is better to avoid intervention and contact a service station.

For a battery, charging and discharging is a common occurrence in vehicle operation. To prevent it from discharging for other reasons, you should regularly carry out visual inspections and turn off non-standard devices after a trip.

Applied technologies and their features

Modern batteries are created using Ca/Ca technology, which makes it possible to attribute the products to the highest class. Motorists will no longer have to go through this cycle: remove the cover and add water, constantly monitoring this indicator. All thanks to the reconciliation of technology, which involves the process of adding calcium to the positive and negative plates.

The frost resistance of the product allows the battery to be used in any temperature conditions. The body is made of polypropylene. High cold cranking current, low water consumption, self-discharge rate.

What should you look for when buying a battery?

Before changing the battery, you need to find out if it is out of warranty. As a rule, it is equal to the warranty period of the car and should not depend on mileage. At your next service visit, you must tell the dealer that the battery has lost all its characteristics and needs to be replaced. Most likely, the dealer will install a new battery.

If the warranty has expired, you can safely go to the store for a new one, but before making a choice, you need to select a battery according to the criteria in order of priority:

  • Polarity . Vesta was built using Renault technology, and therefore we can safely consider it a foreign car. On almost all foreign cars the polarity of the terminals is reversed. Determining this is quite simple - place the battery so that the terminals are facing you. If the minus is on the left, then the polarity is considered reversed. This is exactly what is needed for the Lada Vesta. Installing another battery will be problematic due to the characteristics of the terminals.
  • Size . At first glance, this is an insignificant detail, but the sizes can really be confused. For example, many Japanese have a much smaller battery and installing it in Vesta simply won’t work. You shouldn't try to put a truck battery in it either. It will be too big. Lada Vesta has a battery of standard European sizes 242x175x190mm.
  • Capacity. This is the maximum battery charge. The larger the capacity, the longer the battery can work without recharging. This parameter is relevant in winter, when it is not always possible to start the car the first time. In addition, with a large capacity, the car can be parked for a long time and start successfully in the future. Vesta's capacity is not too large - only 62 Ah. 70 and above is considered good. The smaller the capacity, the faster the battery drains.
  • Starting current. This is the same maximum current that the battery is capable of delivering in a short period of time at the moment the starter is turned on. The higher the current, the easier the electric motor will rotate, which means that the motor will start without much difficulty. A standard battery has a starting current of 600 Amps. But when replacing, it is better to focus on the numbers in 720(EN).
  • Brand. It does not play the most important role, but it affects the price. If the car remains in possession for a period of 3 years or more, then you should not neglect the brand. In this case, it is recommended to pay attention to TYUMEN:

TYUMEN is the best option at a good price and quality. It will cost approximately 5 thousand rubles, but can last from 5 to 10 years, as it is well-maintained and one of the most reliable on the domestic market.

These and “Varta” also deserve attention. But they will cost much more.

Many people try to choose a battery with a charge indicator. But its presence is a rather controversial point, since there is no sense in it. Only the load plug accurately reflects the state of charge.

Let's sum it up

With proper maintenance, the battery of the Lada Vesta can last from 3 to 5 years. If you follow simple operating instructions, this period can be extended. The most important thing is proper battery maintenance.

Monitor the electrolyte level in the battery; The electrolyte level should be between the MIN and MAX marked on the translucent battery case. Do not operate the battery with the electrolyte level below the line marked MIN. If MIN and MAX on the battery case or the case is opaque, then the electrolyte level should be 10-15 mm above the top edge of the separators.

Rice. 9. Battery

Due to the fact that the electrolyte is an aggressive liquid, the impact of which is dangerous for your health and for car parts, we recommend that the battery be serviced by dealers.

Avoid deep discharge of the battery by promptly recharging it if necessary. The battery charge level must be such that the battery voltage (without load) is not lower than 12.5 V (at a temperature of 25 °C this corresponds to a 75% charge level).

Check the battery charge level regularly if:

— You use the car mainly for short city trips.

— You operate the car at negative ambient temperatures. As the temperature drops, the battery capacity decreases. In winter, try to turn on only those electrical appliances whose operation is really necessary.

— You have connected a number of additional permanent consumers to the vehicle's electrical network, for example, watches and other accessories installed during after-sales service.

— Your car is parked for a long time, especially in cold weather. In this case, for better safety, the battery can be disconnected or removed from the car and stored in a warm room.

If the battery has an indicator of density and electrolyte level (“eye”), then the condition of the battery can be determined by its color:

Keep the harness terminals and battery terminals clean and their connections secure. Remember that oxidation of the terminals and leads, as well as their careless connection, causes sparking at the point of unreliable contact, which can lead to failure of the vehicle's electronic equipment. It is also not allowed to check the functionality of the generator while the engine is running by removing the harness terminal from the battery pole terminal.

Do not remove the terminals from the battery terminals while the ignition is on, as this may cause errors in the operation of the ECM or lead to failure of electrical equipment.

When purchasing a new battery to replace an old one that has failed or has expired, be sure to take into account the location of the battery pole terminals. The battery of your car has “reverse” polarity of the pole terminals or “Europolarity”. Trying to install a “straight” polarity battery on a car will lead to problems connecting the wiring harnesses to the battery.

When installing a battery on a vehicle, connect the wiring harness terminals to the battery terminals in accordance with the indicated polarity (the positive terminals of the harness and the battery terminal are larger than the negative terminals).

When charging the battery from an external charger directly on the car, be sure to disconnect the battery from the car's electrical outlet.

Checking the condition of the battery.

If there is a white coating on the terminals and clamps, remove it with sandpaper and apply a thin layer of lubricant to the terminals and clamps. Make sure the battery is securely mounted on the site. Connect the starter and generator wires (spanners 10, 13, VTV-1 technical petroleum jelly in aerosol packaging, sandpaper with a grain size of no more than 10-P or felt with PMA-2 abrasive paste).

Check the condition of the battery clamps and terminals and check that they are securely fastened.

Check the level and density of the battery electrolyte. The electrolyte density must correspond to the values indicated in Tables 1 and 2.

The electrolyte level should be 5-10 mm above the safety shield or 10-15 mm above the upper edge of the separators, or between the “min” and “max” marks, or at the level of the lower edge of the indicator, depending on the battery design.

How to change the battery yourself?

Changing the battery on a Lada Vesta is not difficult. The main thing is to prepare correctly and do everything in the right sequence. In this case, there will be no problems. Conventionally, the process can be divided into three stages:

  1. Preparing for the event.
  2. Removing the old battery.
  3. Installing a new battery.

Each stage must be considered separately.

What tool will you need?

To replace the battery you will need a standard driver's kit. It should contain the following necessary tools: wrenches 10 and 13.

It's nice to have 1/4 sockets and a ratchet, but simple open-end wrenches will suffice to change the battery.

How to remove the old battery?

To remove the old battery, you must perform the following procedure:

  1. Disconnect the negative terminal. To do this, loosen the nut 10(1).
  2. Remove the rubber boot and disconnect the positive terminal, also loosening the nut 10(2).
  3. Unscrew the two 13 nuts and remove the fixing bar (3).
  4. Remove the battery from its seat.

The sequence of actions is shown more clearly in the figure below:

Attention! Be sure to remove the negative terminal first, since when unscrewing the positive terminal, you can accidentally touch the “ground” of the car with the handle of the tool, which can cause a short circuit.

Installing a new battery in Lada Vesta

Install the new battery into the seat. First you need to put on the fixing bar and tighten it:

And after that - the positive terminal and, lastly, the negative terminal. Be sure to lubricate the terminals with copper-containing grease to prevent oxidation in the future.

Self-replacement of batteries: removal and installation

The driver can perform routine work without the involvement of specialists. The battery is removed using a mechanic's tool; this does not require special skills. The operation is performed in the following sequence:

  1. The car hood opens and locks in the raised position.
  2. Using a 10-mm open-end wrench, loosen the nut of the coupling bolt on the negative terminal, turn the unit slightly left and right, remove it and move it to the side.

  3. The action is repeated at the positive terminal, from which the protective cover is first removed.

  4. Using a 13mm wrench, unscrew the two nuts securing the clamping bar, after which it is removed from the studs.

  5. The battery, freed from its fastening, is removed from the socket.
  6. A new battery is installed, observing the correct polarity.

Fastening and connecting the battery to the on-board network is carried out in the reverse order of removal.

How to extend the life of a new battery?

The battery quickly fails if there is no charging from the generator. More precisely, if the charging was insufficient. The battery is killed by short trips and frequent engine starts.

The moment the starter turns on is the most extreme, so after each start you should try to drive a decent distance or not use the car unless absolutely necessary.

Please also pay attention to the following icon:

This is a lamp indicating a lack of charge. It should not blink or light up throughout the entire engine operation. If it lights up, then it is necessary to replace the generator brushes or check the functionality of the generator. Driving on battery power will quickly drain the charge and damage the battery.

Tips for extending service life:

  • Try to travel long distances more often. The battery can be fully charged after covering 60 kilometers. It is better to do such trips at least once every two weeks. Then the battery will always maintain the correct charge.
  • Charge the battery once a year using a charger. If the car is used only for city driving, then the battery will have to be charged once a month.
  • Monitor the electrolyte level. Maintenance batteries require checking the density and electrolyte level. This parameter must be monitored twice a year. This does not apply to maintenance-free batteries.

If you follow these tips, the battery can last beyond the warranty period.

How to open and close Vesta without a battery

Some owners sometimes have to close or open the Vesta door, while the battery is disconnected or completely dead.

To do this, you need to remove the decorative plug near the door handle, under which the cylinder is located, insert the key and we can close or open it. There is another way to lock it; to do this, open the door and lower the lever inside the lock, after which the door can be slammed.
