Lada Priora: replacing the auxiliary drive belt on a car with air conditioning

The alternator belt on the Lada Priora drives all attachments. And since there were many configurations with different combinations of units, there were also several belt options: for cars without additional equipment, versions with air conditioning and power steering, or cars with one additional unit.

Note that in practice, alternator belts for Priora are often selected not according to codes, but according to sizes and recommendations - this is simply a method that has already been proven by the experience of other car owners and has proven its effectiveness.

Preface

Every car owner has encountered such a problem as creaking and slipping of the alternator belt when turning on the headlights, air conditioning, or when driving the car in wet weather. In most cases, to solve this problem, you just need to tighten the belt and everything will fall into place, the creaking and slipping will disappear.

There are times when tightening does not help and the belt has to be replaced, and then Prior owners have a question: what size belt is installed on my car?

The alternator belt in a Lada Priora car can be made in several sizes depending on the vehicle configuration.

In this article we will talk about alternator belts for the Lada Priora car. Below we talk in detail about belt sizes, their manufacturers that you can easily trust, and of course about the process of replacing the alternator belt.

The belt should not have cracks, tears, or separation of rubber from the fabric base. We replace the defective belt.

Signs of belt replacement

Signs for which it is recommended to replace the alternator belt are presented in the list below. It is not recommended to go on a long journey, for example at sea in the summer, with an already worn-out belt, since replacing the alternator belt on a Priora in the field is quite problematic.

List of signs:

  • Belt whistle;
  • Cuts and cracks;
  • Delamination;
  • Dryness;
  • Sticking threads are visible;

If such factors exist on your belt, it is advisable to replace it soon.

To check the belt tension, hold the belt with your fingers in the middle between the tension roller and the generator pulley and turn the belt.
To check the belt tension, hold the belt with your fingers in the middle between the tension roller and the generator pulley and turn the belt.

The belt should not rotate more than 90°. Otherwise, the belt tension needs to be adjusted. To tighten the belt, turn the tension roller counterclockwise, and to loosen it, turn it clockwise. To do this, insert a special key into the holes of the tension roller in the form of two rods with a diameter of 4 mm, welded to the base of the key (the distance between the rods is 18 mm). You can use the key for the old-style timing belt tension roller, installed on all front-wheel drive VAZ cars. If you do not have a special key, you can insert two pins (screws) with a diameter of 4 mm into the holes of the tension roller. Using the screwdriver shaft located between the pins, turn the roller.

Priora alternator belt size

As for the size of the alternator belts on the Priora, this is a matter of debate and discussion on all forums and platforms where the owners of these cars communicate. On the one hand, this information is not that important. Because practice shows that for a specific configuration, the issue of the exact belt length is compensated by the tension of the roller or the position of the generator. On the other hand, you always want to have accurate and specific information. More details about this below - in the description of each specific configuration.

What is absolutely the same for all belts is 6 streams. This is also noticeable in the markings. For example, many belts have the symbols 6РК115 or 6РК125 in their names or descriptions, where 6 is the number of rivules, РК is the type of belt section, and 1115 or 1125 is the belt length in millimeters.

The width of all belts is the same - it is 21 millimeters. Please note that the description of spare parts often indicates the thickness of the packaging - it can be greater, up to 30 mm. But what is important to you is the thickness of the belt, and it is always 21 mm. Now let's go through specific trim levels.

Priora alternator belt without power steering (power steering, power steering) and air conditioning

If you are looking for an alternator belt without power steering for a Priora, then it is important whether you have air conditioning or not. If you don’t have one, then you need a short belt - a model with a length of 738, 742 or 745 millimeters is suitable.

Alternator belt for Priora with air conditioning, without power steering or power steering

What kind of alternator belt is the “Priora” with air conditioning? If you don’t have power steering or electric steering, then the best option is a belt with a length of 1113-1115 millimeters.

Alternator belt Priora without air conditioning, with power steering or power steering

If you are looking for a Priora alternator belt without air conditioning, but you have power steering or electric power steering, then you again need a belt with a length of 1113-1115 millimeters.

Priora generator belt with air conditioning, power steering or power steering

And finally, if you need an alternator belt for a Priora with power steering or electric steering, then the length recommended by the operating instructions is 1123 or 1125 millimeters.

But with this “Priora” configuration, everything is not so simple. We quote the forum of prior leaders: “Attention!!! Through experience, forum members came to the conclusion that the 1125 belt is too large for installation on a Priora car. It stretches very quickly and begins to whistle, but it is no longer possible to tighten it. The best option for a car with any air conditioning and with power steering/electric steering is a belt with a length of 1115 (or even 1113) millimeters.”

If you study the reviews of car owners on forums and reports on replacing belts on the Drive2.ru resource along with comments, then the option with a smaller belt is really suitable for most. Although you can easily come across reviews like “1115 doesn’t stretch, put 1123 and it’s fine.” The preponderance in favor of smaller belts, according to subjective assessment, is somewhere around 75% to 25%.

How can we explain this situation? The simplest thing is that AvtoVAZ simply does not know how to make identical cars. But there are several other factors to consider. Firstly, the possibility of tension with a roller. Secondly, belt tension can be adjusted by changing the position of the generator (difficult, but possible). And thirdly, belts from different manufacturers stretch differently, so they can be tensioned or not tensioned on the roller. But keep in mind that too much tension is also bad, as the roller may fail. Therefore, be prudent!

In general, the advice from experienced Prior owners with air conditioning and power steering/electric steering sounds like this - buy two belts, 1115 and 1125, and negotiate with the seller so that one of them can be returned. So you definitely won't go wrong.

Analogues and price of Lada Priora alternator belt

Somewhere since 2008, original belts for the AvtoVAZ conveyor and in the original Lada-Image packaging have been made by the world-famous manufacturer Gates. And these are one of the most popular analogues to original spare parts.

The second most common analogue to the original ones is belts from BRT (BalakovoRezinoTekhnika). Their quality is consistently high, and they are sold in retail outlets as often as Gates.

The third popular analogue is belts from the world famous German manufacturer Contitech. Although there are complaints about them that they are very drawn out. But it may be a matter of fakes.

Dayco belts, despite the authority of the manufacturer, are not recommended by many. Perhaps due to the large number of fakes. A list of the most popular analogues, with codes and prices, is in the table below.

To tension the belt, use a 17mm spanner to loosen the bolt securing the tension roller and use a special wrench to turn the roller counterclockwise.

Having adjusted the belt tension, tighten the tension roller mounting bolt to a torque of 34–41 Nm.

To replace the belt, place an adjustable stop under the oil pan through a wooden block.

Symptoms of malfunction and their elimination

You can determine whether a replacement is needed or whether you can simply tighten the power steering belt with air conditioning on the Priora 16 valves only after inspecting this component. To do this, just open the hood and examine the belt; it is located next to the right front wheel. There are signs that indicate it's time to check the alternator belt: something whistling and squeaking from under the hood.

The reasons may be the following:

  • Antifreeze, oil or other working fluids have come into contact with the generator pulley or belt.
  • The belt is worn out - you can tell by its appearance.
  • The tension has dropped - in this case, the component must be tightened.
  • The bearing in the generator is worn out.

When the belt whistles in a Priora with 16 valves, it’s time to carry out diagnostics. If there are cracks, tears or other serious damage on its surface, then replacement is required. If the generator component with hydraulic booster and air conditioning looks normal, you should check its tension; the optimal level of deflection is 6-8 mm - you need to press the component in the middle between the generator and the pulleys.

Original Priora alternator belt codes

But first, let's go through the original codes. They and the belt sizes are presented in the table.

Lada Priora is equipped with different sets of attachments. Firstly, without any units - then you need the shortest belt. In the case of just one unit (power steering or air conditioning), you need a medium-sized belt. If you have both air conditioning and power steering, then you need the longest belt. As you can see in the table, the belt for one unit has the same original code and length - regardless of what it is.

When selecting analogues, keep in mind that according to the original code you will be offered belts of different lengths suitable for this configuration. For example, when selecting using code 21100-3701720-00, you will find analogs with a length of not only 742 millimeters, but also 738 and 745 mm. So look at the description.

Also remember that any Priora generator belt does not depend on whether your engine has 16 valves or 8 valves - the parts will be the same. Belt models do not depend on the engine, but on the number of attachments. In the same way, it makes no difference what kind of air conditioning system you have, Panasonic or Halla - the drive belt will be the same.

Step-by-step instruction

  1. First of all, we need to wet the bolts that hold the bracket and motor mounts. Wait 10-15 minutes for the lubricant to spread over the surface;

The replacement is complete, all that remains is to adjust the alternator belt with power steering and air conditioning. The new consumables on the Priora will have to be tightened several times until you get the required tension. If the component whistles or there is a hum coming from under the hood, then it is necessary to carry out repeated adjustments until these defects are eliminated.

How to determine the need for replacement or adjustment

The condition and tension of the belt must be checked at least once a quarter.

This will allow you to quickly detect weak tension or damage to the belt. A whistle that appears when starting the engine and accelerating the car indicates weak belt tension. Rapid battery discharge (as well as weak charging current) may also indicate a loose alternator belt. The service life of a high-quality alternator belt is 40–60 thousand kilometers or 2 years. After this, the belt must be replaced, even if it looks normal. If cracks or breaks appear on the belt, it must be replaced, regardless of mileage. To determine the condition of the belt, it is necessary to carry out diagnostics.
