Setting a secret code
The APS-6 module, if it has been activated, cannot be taken and turned off for the entire duration of further use. But there is a procedure for setting the code that you will later use to start the engine. If you set the code once, you can start the engine with a blank, but you will have to enter the code value with the gas pedal. Here we will look at how to set a value that is thought up in advance and consists of 6 decimal digits. Read carefully.
Setting the code is always combined with the operation of “writing” the keys. That is, you will need all the keys that you plan to use. This also applies to the “training” key.
Red mark on the training key
The ignition switch is equipped with three marks: 0, I, II. You will move the key between the first two. Close all doors and follow these steps:
- Place the training key in the lock, move it to position I, and after 6 seconds again to position 0 (the lamp with the “machine” will begin to blink);
- Change the key to “normal”, turn on the ignition (position I), wait for the sound signal;
- If multiple keys are used, perform “step 2” for each of them, first removing the “previous” key;
- Reinstall the training key in the lock, move it to position I. After the sound signal, turn off the ignition (position 0), wait for the signal and move the key to position I. The horn will sound, the “dimensions” will blink;
- The learning key remains in the lock and the ignition is on. Wait a minute until the Check Engine light goes off;
- Start dialing: short presses set the first digit, and the transition to the next digit is initiated by a long press (until the “Check Engine” goes out);
- After dialing the 6th digit, the Check Engine light does not go out. Wait 12 seconds, release the gas pedal, remove the learning key.
Congratulations on successfully completing the secret sequence.
Be aware that the numbers in the code sequence can take values from “1” to “9”. Zero is excluded.
Methods for independently registering keys in immo
So, if the immobilizer does not see the key, and you are sure that the malfunction is of a software nature and not mechanical, then you can try to register a new key. If this is the problem, then the system should work better with the new registered key.
Let's look at an example of prescribing APS immobilizers on VAZ cars:
- To record a new code, you will need a master key; there is a special red mark on its body. If you do not have a master key, then you will not be able to carry out the programming procedure yourself. So, when you have the key in your hands, you need to disarm the vehicle and close all the doors. If you plan to use multiple keys for control in the future, you will need to keep them next to you.
- Using the master key, you need to activate and turn off the ignition, and between these actions you should maintain an interval of 6 seconds. Having done this, you will see the immo light begin to blink.
- The next step is to install another key along with the main one that you used first. After inserting the key, you must repeat the above procedure for turning off and turning on the ignition, and sound signals should be heard.
- Having done this, you will need to turn off the ignition and make sure that the immo indicator light is blinking normally. These steps should be repeated several times depending on how many attached key fobs you have.
- After this, take the master key again and wait until the immobilizer gives several beeps, after which the ignition can be turned off. However, the key fob itself should not be removed from the lock.
- The system should give another single beep, after which the ignition should be turned on again. At this moment, the horn may sound, if this happens, then the side lights should also blink.
- Now all you have to do is wait until the immo indicator goes out. This will indicate that the registration procedure was completed successfully. Next, take the prescribed key fob and activate the ignition, wait about six seconds - the immo should start blinking, after which the ignition should be turned off and wait about 10 seconds. After these steps, the device will be ready for use.
Restoring synchronization
If the keys have been “registered” again, it is often necessary to restore synchronization. Restoration is carried out in 1 step.
Main (non-learning) key in the ignition switch
Take the key you are going to use to start the car. Turn on the ignition, wait 6 seconds. Let's say the immobilizer light starts flashing. Then turn off the ignition and wait another 10 seconds. The error will be fixed.
If, after following these steps, you cannot correct the error, there is only one piece of advice: you will have to “record” all the keys again.
General recommendations
- do not start the engine on the “last breath” of the battery, this may lead to immobilizer problems;
- remove the battery terminals only with the ignition off;
- Be sure to make a duplicate of the key, or in extreme cases, the chip. If a single chip is lost, troubleshooting will cost significantly more;
- If your key ring contains keys from another car, especially the same brand, separate the keys. If the chip from another key accidentally “responds” when the ignition is turned on, the immobilizer system may fail and repair will be required;
- Do not store keys near powerful sources of electromagnetic fields (microwave ovens, induction electric stoves, etc.).
Code typing and alternative launch
Let's say you come to the conclusion that the immobilizer cannot read the key. Then, without removing the key, perform the following steps:
- Try to start the starter, then return the key to position I;
- The lamp with the “machine” will blink;
- Wait 60 seconds for the Check Engine light to go out;
- Dial the code value using the gas pedal (see above);
- Even though the Check Engine light is on, the engine can be started.
If you decide to erase your code, simply follow what is stated in "Chapter 1". When dialing the first digit, press the gas and do not release the pedal for 20 seconds.
Engine start blocked? Don't rush to conclusions
There are situations when many car owners blame a blocked immobilizer, but in reality the problem is different.
Please note the following points:
- Battery discharge. Modern immobilizers have a protection function that prevents the engine from starting when there is low voltage or no voltage in the on-board network. For example, you start the car, the starter made an attempt to crank the engine and that was all over - the protection system worked. Most likely you need to charge the battery. Or start it from the cigarette lighter. Also pay attention to the terminals, they should not be oxidized and should be in close contact with the wires; it is also important to know how to lubricate them correctly.
- The battery in the key fob is low. Many people forget that there is also a battery there (not the training key, but the working one), as a rule, it is CR2032. Replace it and you won’t need to unlock the immobilizer, everything will work without it. Many will say that the battery only affects the standard alarm and door opening, and the chip in the key is non-volatile. But as practice shows, replacing the old battery with a new one solves the problem.
- Circuit breakers. Check them and replace if necessary.
- Limit switches. Distorted signals may arrive at the control board due to oxidation of the contacts on the limit switches. As a rule, they are located in the area of the engine and luggage compartment. They need to be checked and, if necessary, cleaned and treated with alcohol.
You will not be able to do without the help of specialists when:
- Problems with the key itself. Most likely you will have to register a new key at a car service center. If you have the knowledge, you can do it yourself.
- The immobilizer software has failed. The only way out of this situation is by flashing the device. And since you don’t have a PIN card in your hands (since 1998 they have not been issued to car owners), you will have to contact a dealership, where they will check all the documents for ownership of the vehicle and only then re-flash it. This applies to those cars in which the immobilizer is supplied by default from the manufacturer.
Characteristics of the immobilizer on Kalina
On VAZ, immo is a standard anti-theft device that is installed on all injection Ladas, except classic models. During vehicle production, these systems are in an untrained state; accordingly, their protection option is disabled. The immobilizer package includes three keys - two working and one so-called master.
Where is?
In Kalina, Priora and other models, the device that allows you to block the internal combustion engine is located inside the center console. The control unit can be seen behind the plastic lining in the car interior, in particular, in the area of the stove, where the air flow deflectors are located. To gain access to the microprocessor module, you will need to remove part of the dashboard. The antenna adapter, which is designed to connect the control unit with the tag key, is installed on the steering column next to the ignition switch.
In reviews, consumers call this installation location unsuccessful. It is difficult to access, and the plug on the connection connector is often filled with working fluids that enter the air channels. This problem is often encountered when flushing the radiator unit of the air conditioning system.
How to bypass the immobilizer
If a malfunction occurs in the anti-theft system, the car cannot be started with the key, the immobilizer sends a signal to the ECM to block the main systems. If the need arises to install autostart, the driver has a question about how to disable the Priora immobilizer himself.
Using a crawler
The use of an immobilizer crawler allows you to use the autostart procedure for a vehicle without dismantling or disabling the APS. You can make a device to bypass the system yourself or buy it and install it at a service station.
A simple walker consists of a relay, an inductor for pumping power to the chip, and a diode. A working key is wound to the coil, the circuit is mounted in parallel to the standard pumping coil.
Without a lineman
At the service station, a procedure is carried out to reflash the engine ECU in order to disable the immobilizer. If you have an adapter, laptop and software, you can perform this operation yourself.
To do this you need:
- Disconnect the negative cable from the battery terminal.
- Gain access to the ECM, disconnect the unit from the vehicle network.
- Remove it from the car.
- Remove the cover from the ECU, solder the resistor on the board to a position that allows reprogramming.
- Connect the board to the adapter that provides communication with the computer and supply power to it.
- Using the program, erase data from non-volatile EEPROM memory.
- Save changes, disconnect from computer.
- Resolder the resistor to its original place.
- Install the ECM into the vehicle's electronic system.
When this operation is carried out, the engine ECU stops receiving signals from the immobilizer.
Resolder the chip in the control unit
If there is no adapter and it is possible to supply power to the ECM during programming, it is recommended to unsolder the EEPROM memory chip. In its place, put a new clean chip or the same chip, but only reset it using a programmer.
Disconnect the control unit
Physically disabling and removing the immobilizer from the Lada Priora is not possible, because it is integrated into the car’s comfort unit circuit. Disabling the power supply unit will disable the vehicle.
Immobilizer malfunctions and what to do about them?
If the device does not work, the owner needs to determine the cause of the error, otherwise driving the car will be impossible:
- One of the symptoms is that the engine’s starter mechanism cranks the crankshaft, but there are no flashes of the air-fuel mixture in the cylinders of the power unit. On the control panel in the car interior, the indicator of a faulty immobilizer lights up. Such signs indicate desynchronization of the operation of the control device and the tag in the key. To perform repairs, the transponder will need to be retrained. If this does not help, then the problem must be looked for in the operation of the electronic circuits of the ignition key or controller.
- If a malfunction occurs in the immo, the speed of the power unit may float at idle. The reason is usually the incorrect operation of the microprocessor due to liquid getting on the connector. To restore the action of the blocker, you will need to dry the block and circuit. If the control unit is faulty, it will have to be replaced.
- The control module does not receive power as a result of a breakdown of the safety device located in the mounting block. On Kalina 1 cars, a 10 ampere part is responsible for the operation of the blocker, on Kalina 2 - 15 A. If the safety elements burn out frequently, it is necessary to diagnose the car’s electronics.
User Igor Bakhirev reported about the malfunction of the locking device on this car model.
What's the result?
Taking into account the above information, it becomes clear that the immobilizer on the Lada Kalina, in case of malfunctions in its operation, should be turned off and turned on again. Such a “reboot” in some cases allows you to start the engine and continue to operate the car without problems.
If it is necessary to completely remove the immobilizer, then certain manipulations with the unit will be required, which are not recommended to be performed independently. In this case, you need to contact experienced specialists who specialize in repairing such devices.
Finally, we note that in addition to the standard immo, starting the engine can also be blocked by a car alarm. In this case, it is necessary to accurately determine the source of the problem, and then select the most appropriate methods to eliminate any failures or malfunctions of the alarm system, immobilizer (both standard and third-party) or the entire security system in the car.
Instructions for activating immo
System programming is usually carried out by dealers when selling cars.
The blocker training procedure is carried out differently in Kalina cars of the first and second versions.
Activation on Kalina-1
To enable the immobilizer yourself, perform the following steps:
- A training master key is prepared and equipped with a red mark. It must be installed in the lock.
- The key is then turned in the switch to the ignition activation position. As a result of the blocker being disabled, after 6 seconds the indicator light on the control panel will turn on. If the light does not light up, this indicates that the system is active. Accordingly, the blocker is trained and its activation is not required.
- Then the ignition is turned off, and the immo indicator light will operate in rapid flash mode. The car owner has six seconds to install a regular key in the switch.
- Then the lock cylinder is turned until the ignition is turned on. If the actions are performed correctly, the beepper will turn on three times. If the buzzer does not sound, the reason may be that the time interval allocated for installing and turning the key has been exceeded. Perhaps the problem lies in the engine blocker itself.
- Then you need to wait about six seconds, the beepper will emit another double signal. Afterwards the ignition in the car is turned off. The key is removed from the lock.
- Now the car owner has another 6 seconds during which he must activate the ignition with the master key. The immo indicator diode will blink on the control panel of the car.
- After activation, the beepper will emit a triple beep; until the next series, which consists of two separate beeps, you need to wait 2-3 seconds.
- The ignition is turned off, but the key does not need to be removed from the lock. After a certain time interval, the beeper will give another signal, and the indicator on the control panel will blink at high frequency. About 15 seconds will pass between deactivation of the ignition and the light switching to accelerated mode. But the time interval is also determined by the model of the microprocessor unit.
- Then within 10 seconds you need to quickly turn on the ignition for 3 seconds. and turn it off.
- The machine's light alarm will give three signals, this indicates the successful completion of the programming procedure.
- Then you need to wait until the indicator light on the control panel stops blinking completely. The master key is removed from the ignition switch.
Contactless immobilizer device
Common immobilizers of this type are based on the principle of RFID tags. These are chips that do not have their own power source. They generate a signal only after the immobilizer antenna gives a pulse, the power of which is enough to charge the capacitor built into the chip, and the chip has time to broadcast a given set of data. The immobilizer uses the same antenna to receive information. The small size of the immobilizer chips allows them to be installed directly in the key body, so the ring antenna is fixed around the ignition lock cylinder. When the ignition is turned on, the immobilizer unit polls the surrounding air, reading the code from the chip in the key. The received code is compared with the codes recorded in the controller’s memory and, if a match is found, the immobilizer sends a signal to the injection ECU allowing the engine to start.
In complex systems, a floating code is no longer used, but a floating code, similar to how it is implemented in alarms. Such chips are installed in radio keys: the operation of the standard alarm radio channel is tied to codes generated by the chip. A common problem with systems with a dynamic code is the possibility of it desynchronizing with the central immobilizer unit (if you repeatedly press the radio key buttons outside the reception area). After this, you will have to perform the immobilizer training procedure.
Disabling the immobilizer yourself
The procedure for turning off the blocker is performed differently depending on the microprocessor model.
Bosch M7 4 block
To remove the immobilizer you will need:
- PC or laptop on which the Winflashecu v.1.14 utility is pre-installed;
- cable with K-Line adapter, a universal version is suitable;
- a program with which the microprocessor can work with the blocker disabled;
- several cables of different lengths.
The shutdown procedure is performed as follows:
- The wires with terminals are disconnected from the battery. You also need to disconnect the connectors with cables from the ECM, which is located in the engine compartment of the car. To perform this task, remove the top plastic cover, then remove the flat pad retainer. We are talking about a large connector; the small plug can be left alone.
- Then the wire is installed in contacts A4 and B2 from the block side. These conductors are used to provide additional 12 volt power. To perform the task, they must be connected to the battery using an intermediate switch. The plug is installed in place and the lock is secured.
- The K-Line adapter with a wire is installed in the diagnostic connector, which is located in the passenger compartment. To gain access to it, you need to remove the plastic cover located on the center console.
- In the PC settings, the information transfer speed is set to 38400 bps.
- The previously installed program starts. In the settings window, you need to specify the port number, the set speed, as well as the type of microprocessor immo module. The message “No connection” should be lit in the lower corner. Then power is supplied to contact elements A4 and B2. The ignition is activated, as a result of which the inscription “No communication” will change to “Communication with the ECU”. At the same time, the operation start key will become active.
- Data is read from EEPROM, this is the software of the control unit. This information must be saved on your PC.
- Then new software is selected on the computer and loaded into the microprocessor memory. To do this, click the “Write EEPROM” button. The loading procedure begins and must be completed. After this, the utility on the computer is closed, and the ignition in the car is turned off.
- The additional power cables to the connector pins are disconnected. You need to make sure that the immobilizer was removed. When starting the engine without a chip, the indicator on the control panel will light up for a few seconds and disappear.
Bosch block 7 9 7
To disable the immobilizer on Kalina with such an ECU, it will have to be modified. To do this, you need to resolder one resistor element. It is recommended to entrust the procedure to specialists. When the task is completed, the device is flashed.
User Vlad V spoke about independently disabling the engine blocker in cars equipped with a 7 9 7 block.
Block January 7 2
To complete the task you will need:
- K-Line adapter, for example, VM9213;
- PC or laptop on which the ChipLoader 1.97.7 utility is installed;
- a soldering iron with a power of 25-40 W, as well as rosin and tin;
- several cables with a switch;
- resistor element, its resistance will be 3.6-5 kOhm;
- connectors for connecting cables to the microprocessor;
- 12 volt battery.
The shutdown procedure is as follows:
- The power supply to the machine's electrical network is turned off; to do this, the terminal with the clamp is disconnected from the battery. The microprocessor module is being dismantled.
- The control unit housing is wrapped with an insulator. The circuit is assembled in accordance with the photo.
- Then the adapter is connected to a PC or laptop.
- Using the switch, you need to simulate the operation of the ignition system.
- The utility is launched on the computer. After it starts, it is necessary to establish a connection with the microprocessor module.
- The factory firmware is being read from the control unit. The information is saved to the PC hard drive. After successful reading, click the “Delete immo” button. You must wait until a confirmation window with the text “Blocker removed” appears on the computer screen.
- The program closes and the ignition is deactivated using the switch.
- Before installing a microprocessor on a car, you need to turn off the pulse from the engine blocker. With the connector removed, using a piece of wire, it is necessary to close the contact elements numbered 9 and 18.

What to do if the engine is accidentally blocked?
If for some unknown reason the engine was blocked, then most likely you did something wrong and the immobilizer activated another function, which caused the blocking.
A lot depends on what kind of protection system is installed. But in any case, you need to pay attention to the information on the key fob.
If the StarLine immobilizer is installed, then if a problem occurs, the IMMO inscription on the key fob will be activated, and the light will blink frequently.
Algorithm of actions:
- Remove the key from the ignition switch;
- Press the central locking button.
- Try starting the engine again.
Or:
- Leave the car;
- Set the alarm in security mode;
- Wait a few seconds.
- Remove the car from the alarm system.
- Start the engine.
Emergency shutdown
To complete this task, you will need a digital password. This code must be previously recorded in the ECU memory.
The procedure for adding a new password is performed immediately after immo activation:
- The master key is inserted into the lock and turned to turn the ignition on. You must wait until the indicator light disappears from the dashboard.
- Then the password numbers are dialed; you can use numbers from 1 to 9. The dialing procedure is carried out by quickly pressing the gas pedal all the way. With each subsequent release, the engine blocker indicator on the dashboard will light up, and when released, it will go out. When the numbers are dialed, you need to press the gas pedal and hold it for 6 seconds.
- The procedure for assigning each character to a password combination is performed in a similar manner.
- When the last digit is entered, the IMO icon on the instrument panel will go out. The driver of the car must keep the gas pedal pressed for ten seconds, then it is released.
- The ignition in the car is turned off, and the master key is removed from the switch.
Principle of operation
The main advantage of an immobilizer over an alarm system is its ability to break the chains necessary to start the car and prevent it from moving, while an alarm system can only report theft. Even if a thief turns off the alarm and gets inside the vehicle, he will not be able to start the engine and drive away.
There are models of anti-theft systems that allow you to start the engine and even drive several hundred meters, and only then block the vehicle’s movement.
Practice shows that such systems help not only protect the car, but also catch the criminal.
It is impossible to find out how the immobilizer works by the appearance of the car or keys, so it is almost impossible to bypass the system.
All modifications of Lada Granta are equipped with an immobilizer of the first type, which blocks the ignition when opened with someone else’s key or in the event of a break-in. Anti-theft protection is built into the control module of the electric motor and its components. It includes:
- 2 keys (the first is active, the second is training);
- control module;
- signaling device;
- communication coil in the ignition switch.
The system control unit houses a sensor, and a chip with a code is located on the key. The system reads the code and thereby allows or prohibits turning on the engine. The control light indicator is located on the instrument panel and signals the protection position. The model is also equipped with a door lock, which is controlled from the key fob: activated by a single click and deactivated by a double click.
Anti-theft protection operates in 2 modes:
- The immobilizer option is deactivated. In this case, there is no connection between the protective system and the electronic control unit, and the engine is not blocked when started by a third party.
- The function is active. In this mode, starting the engine is possible only with a valid key. If you try to start the engine in another way, the ECU is blocked.
Bypassing the immobilizer on Kalina
Let's look at how to bypass the blocker on a car with a Starline signaling system installed:
- The main immobilizer unit is flashed to a version no lower than L8.
- The digital interface can be updated using software to version no less than 3.9.
- Then, in the CAN+LIN bus settings, the “Bypass the standard blocker” function is activated.
- All components of the anti-theft complex are assembled and connectors are connected. If the alarm is already installed, then you need to connect the power to the microprocessor unit.
- The ignition is turned off. The service key must be pressed 14 times.
- After the last click, the power unit starts for three seconds.
- The anti-theft siren should emit a double beep, this indicates that the bypass tag has been successfully recorded. If the power unit starts up and the alarm does not beep, then the programming mode was not turned on. Then the recording procedure is repeated.
Removing the immobilizer control unit
1. Remove the negative terminal of the battery.
2. Remove the instrument panel trim.
3. Using a Phillips screwdriver, unscrew the two screws securing the unit to the instrument panel, holding the screw nuts with a 10 mm wrench.
4. Remove the block from the instrument panel and disconnect the harness block
Removing the remote control unit
Raise the rear seat cushion. Loosen the screws securing the carpet in the rear left door opening.
3. Having folded back the edge of the carpet and the sound insulation, disconnect the wiring block from the remote control unit.
4. Using a 10 mm socket wrench, unscrew the two nuts securing the block to the body.
5. Remove the remote control unit.
Installation is carried out in reverse order
If the immobilizer keys are lost
If you lose a working key, you need to purchase a blank and cut it to work with the ignition switch. Then you need to perform the immobilizer training procedure using a training key and a new working key.
Video “Disabling the immobilizer on Kalina”
The channel “Elm327 Equipment for car diagnostics” showed the procedure for deactivating the standard blocker using a special connector.
There were several reasons why the Lada Kalina does not start, the starter does not turn, and the immobilizer is blinking. There are several reasons and each of them can cause different damage, but we will consider them all.
The video shows a problem with the immobilizer on Kalina:
How to disable the immobilizer
If the immobilizer breaks down or malfunctions, the car owner is faced with a choice: replace the control unit or disable the system. A more rational solution, from a security point of view, would be to purchase a new control unit and keys, but there is no guarantee that this unit will last long. Another solution would be to deactivate the system. To disable the immobilizer unit, several methods are used that will require the performer to have knowledge in electronics. If you do not have such skills, then it is wiser to take the car to a service center, where the unit will be turned off by qualified specialists.
Using a crawler
A bypass device is often used when installing alarm systems with auto start. The operating principle of such a device is based on the use of a separate unit with a standard key or chip installed inside. The unit is located in the car interior under the plastic trim of the pillars or in the instrument panel.
The signal from the key or chip is read by the unit's antenna and transmitted to the ignition switch. The crawler is controlled using a separate relay. If necessary, the crawler can be set to permanently exclude the immobilizer from the circuit. The car can be started with a key without a chip, but data will be supplied to the immobilizer from the bypass device control unit.
One of the classic devices is the Starline crawler model BP-03, which can work in conjunction with any security alarms. Device connection options are shown in the photo below.
In addition to the key crawler, you can use keyless devices that emulate the signal from the chip. The operating principle of the devices is the same. The main disadvantage of this scheme is the retention of a standard immobilizer on board, so this option can only be recommended if security systems with auto start are installed.
Without a lineman
If the car owner does not want to install the crawler himself, then he can remove the immobilizer only by reprogramming the ECM system units.
On some blocks you will have to change the layout of the elements, but on others - not. Such products include the ECM model M73 manufactured by Avtel.
Before starting work, you must remove the unit from the car and connect a standard K-Line type adapter according to the diagram below. You will have to make the transition wiring harness from the unit to the adapter yourself.
Connecting the M73 block
After this you need to proceed as follows:
- Install the OpenBox software on your computer, run it and read the stock EEPROM firmware.
- Save the factory EEPROM data for rollback to its original state (if necessary) and modification.
- Download and install the HxD file editor and open the downloaded firmware.
- Add a line consisting of two FF characters at the beginning of the text and save the change.
- Load the corrected file into the block memory. You can use ready-made versions of untrained firmware that are publicly available.
- Disconnect the unit and install it back on the car.
Causes of malfunction
Let us list the reasons for the occurrence of such a phenomenon as a non-working starter and a flashing immobilizer. First, it’s worth noting that it all depends on the intensity of the blinking, but let’s take the most common concept. So, the reasons for the malfunction:
- The most deplorable and fatal option is the ECU burned out . This usually happens because liquid has gotten into it.
Inspection of the ECU on Kalina
It is best to determine all these reasons at a car service center, since this is not often possible with your own hands.
ECU burned out
The insides of the ECU block are filled with antifreeze, we are trying to fix it
If the ECU burns out, then you can “dry your oars” because the owner ended up with a substantial amount of money. Often, this happens due to the fault of the motorists themselves, who try to install additions to the car themselves, or simply spill coffee on the dashboard.
This malfunction can be treated by replacing the control unit and updating the firmware. The procedure is expensive, so it is recommended to treat the car carefully, especially inside.
The most important problem is that there is a design flaw: the ENGINE CONTROL UNIT is installed in such a way that if the hood seal leaks, it floods with water. And the block “comes to a halt.”
To prevent this from happening, we recommend that you move the engine control unit to another location, higher, under the panel.
Ignition key and lock
Out of sync ignition keys. Key training will be required
A malfunction of the key or ignition switch can only be treated in one way - by replacing them. In this case, you will have to flash the same car control unit. This is not a critical malfunction, but it will cause trouble and hassle.
While checking the ignition switch
Immobilizer
First, it’s worth determining why the immobilizer started flashing. This can be done according to the error diagnosis manual. But, in any case, most motorists recommend replacing it. This is not a simple matter and the owner will drink a lot of blood. You can try to deactivate it, more details here.
Starter or relay failure
We check the contacts on the starter and its relay
Let's consider this option also as a coincidence. If the immobilizer flashes and the starter does not turn, then this is a “normal” phenomenon for the starter, since it will not be supplied with power for anti-theft purposes. But it doesn’t hurt to check the contact between the starter and the relay. You can close the starter directly (see video).
Why does the immobilizer not see the car key?
Understanding the principle of its operation will help you understand why the immobilizer does not see the key. A working security system unit makes contact with the key, reads the unique code and compares it with the one stored in memory. When it is not possible to read the code or it does not correspond to what is written in the block, the immobilizer blocks the engine from starting.
The main reasons why the immobilizer does not see the original key, and ways to solve them, are collected in the table.
Problems | Cause of occurrence | What to do? |
Malfunctions in the power supply of the engine control unit | Low battery charge | Charge or replace the battery |
Broken wiring | Detect and repair the break
Fuse blown | Inspect fuses, test circuits for short circuits, replace blown fuses
ECU contacts are bent, loose or oxidized | Inspect the ECU connectors, align and/or clean the contacts
Firmware failure | Damage to controller software files | Reflash the ECU, register the keys or remove the immobilizer |
Control unit memory failure | Repair (resolder the flash and flash the unit) or replace the ECU, register the keys or repair the immobilizer
Physical chip failure and magnetic irradiation | Shocks, overheating, getting the key wet | Start the car with a different key, buy and register a new key |
Irradiation of a key by an EMR source | Remove the radiation source, start with a different key, replace and register a new key
Drop in battery charge level | Leaving the car with electrical appliances running will cause extreme wear and tear on the battery | Charge the battery or replace it with a new one |
Poor antenna-receiver contact | Damage or oxidation of contacts | Inspect the wiring, clean the terminals, restore contacts |
Antenna failure | Replace antenna
Lost communication between immobilizer and ECU | Poor contact, oxidation of connectors | Ring the wiring, clean the contacts, restore integrity |
Failure of the immo block or ECU | Diagnose units, replace faulty ones, flash keys or reset immobilizer function
Malfunction in the power supply circuits of the immobilizer unit | Broken wires, oxidation of connectors | Check wiring, restore integrity, clean connectors |
The immobilizer does not recognize the key in cold weather | Low battery | Charge or replace the battery |
The immo bypass unit in the security system with auto start is faulty | Check the immobilizer bypass, the chip installed in it, and the bypass antennas
Freezing of electronic components | Warm up the key
The battery in the active key is discharged | Battery life expired | Replace battery |
The immobilizer bypass unit does not work or does not work correctly | Bypass block failure | Repair or repair the bypass block |
Label offset in the crawler | Correct the label |
If the immobilizer does not see the key well, the reasons are most often poor contact, mechanical damage to the block or chip, or low supply voltage. You need to pay attention to the problems listed above when your car displays an immobilizer error after an accident.
In some cars, after an accident, the safety system may block the fuel pump. In this case, the protection must be deactivated. The method is different for each model, for example, on a Ford Focus you need to press the button to turn on the fuel pump in the niche near the driver’s left foot.
Software disabling the immobilizer from the ECU
Situations where the immobilizer does not always see the key due to the firmware are rare. Usually, if software fails, it fails irrevocably. The malfunction can be resolved by rebinding the key or software disabling the immobilizer.
Owners of Ford, Toyota, Lexus, Mitsubishi, SsangYong, Haval and many others equipped with a non-standard alarm with auto start in the presence of a lineman may encounter cases when, when cold weather sets in, the immobilizer does not see the key. Therefore, you need to start troubleshooting in the bypass block. If the tag is equipped with its own battery, you need to check its charge level, as it quickly drops in the cold.
Most keys for cars with an immobilizer are passive: they do not have batteries, and the power is supplied by induction from a coil installed in the area of the car lock.
To avoid problems with the immobilizer, it is recommended to take the following precautions:
- do not disassemble the key, immobilizer and ECU;
- do not throw the keys, do not get them wet or expose them to electromagnetic waves;
- use high-quality bypass units when installing non-standard alarm systems with auto-start;
- when buying a used car, ask the owner for all the keys, a piece of paper with the immobilizer code written down for flashing new ones, and also clarify information about the features of the installed alarm (its model, availability of immo bypass, location of the service button, etc.).
When purchasing a used car with only one main key, it is not possible to link new chips to the unit. Only replacing the immobilizer or ECU will help. The costs of these procedures can reach tens of thousands of rubles!
