Is it necessary to install mudguards on a grant by law?

The standard mudguards of the Lada Granta and Lada Kalina 2 station wagon are small in size and look good. However, they do not cope with their main task - they are not able to prevent splashes, snow and small gravel from flying out from under the wheels of the car. As a result, cars behind, as well as the paintwork of the body and body kit, suffer. The problem can be solved by replacing standard mud flaps with universal mud flaps, or by installing mud flaps from another car, but which ones are better suited?

The following mudguards can be installed on the Lada Granta and Lada Kalina 2:

1. Front and rear mudguards from Lada Kalina. You will have to work a little on the fit contour in place.

2. Front and rear universal mudguards Elegant No. 2. Mudguards with numbers 1 and 2 can be installed on the front without any problems; at the rear it is also possible to install with number 2, but with local modifications.

3. Front mudguards L.Locker. Installed without modifications, made specifically for Lada Granta.

4. Front mudguards Novline NLF.52.25.F10 (for Lada Granta sedan) and NLF.52.25.F11 (for Lada Granta liftback).

5. Front and rear universal SPARCO mudguards. Installed on top of the standard ones, cut to size.

Let us remind you that Lada cars are not always equipped with standard mudguards. If you got a car without them, then it is possible to install original mudguards for the Lada Granta/Kalina 2 station wagon. The catalog number of the rear mudguards is 2190-8404413 and 2190-8404412, the front ones are 21900-8403512 and 21900-8403513. Which mudguards did you choose?

Any responsible driver tries to take care of his car from the very moment of purchase. Protecting the body from dirt, sand and stones is the minimum it should do.

Preparatory stage before self-installation of front mudguards on the Lada Granta Liftback

Let's figure out what types of this product the domestic car market offers, as well as what mud flaps are suitable for the Grant. Their characteristics depend on the material from which they are made.

• Plastic. It is quite hard, so even large stones will not pass such protection. Maintains performance over a wide temperature range. A good bonus is the ability to choose the color of the mudguard to match the body color. There are, however, significant disadvantages.

The plastic part cracks and crumbles under significant mechanical stress. It is most likely impossible to slide off a high side without damaging such mudguards.

• Rubber. Many people choose mud flaps made of this material for their Lada Granta. They are the cheapest and simplest. Installation does not cause any problems, and you don’t have to worry about them breaking. But they also have their drawbacks.

The flexibility of the material, which is a plus, also has a downside. Such mudguards will not hold large stones, and, accordingly, will not fully fulfill their function. In addition, the operation of rubber products at low temperatures leads to drying out and brittleness of the material.

• Combined materials: thermoplastic, polyurethane, rubber-plastic, etc. Such mud flaps for the Lada Granta are the most successful option in Russian conditions. They are moderately flexible; when they hit an obstacle, they bend. At the same time, the sufficient rigidity of the part allows it to be protected both from dirt and sand, and from large stones.

When choosing mudguards for Grant, you need to pay attention to what size they are. As mentioned above, standard parts do not protect the surface of the car. Stones and sand fall into the bottom, bypassing such a small obstacle. Therefore, it is better to buy larger mud flaps for Granta, which ones are right for you - it depends on your preferences.

Some car owners really like to install long mudguards on the Grant - to the floor. But they are only good in the summer and on a flat road. If the car is used in winter or off-road, it can be significantly damaged.

Even in city conditions, the long mudguards on the Grant will constantly hit all the obstacles, of which there are many: speed bumps, curbs, potholes on the roads. This increases the likelihood of damage to both the mudguard itself and the car.

Basic modifications of the Lada Granta Liftback are equipped with standard front and rear mudguards. However, most car owners are unhappy with their functionality. Due to the short shield, the car tilts when driving through puddles.

Types of mudguards for Lada Granta Liftback

In order to eliminate a factory defect, motorists install universal type mud flaps on the Granta Liftback. They are compatible not only with the Lada family, but also with other brands.

Let's look at ways to install non-standard "lockers" (as mud flaps are called) using the example of a Lada Granta Liftback car.

Standard lockers are “short” due to the protection protrusion at the bottom of only 6.0 cm. This is not enough to fully protect the fender and sills of the car.

Protection - mud flaps for Lada Granta Liftback

The protection protrusion in universal lockers is increased by 2–4 cm depending on the model. This allows you to direct the flow of water (dirt) at an angle, preventing contamination of the body and sills.

At the same time, enlarged mudguards (lockers) have a significant drawback - the holes do not match the standard ones. Often, car enthusiasts drill new mounting sockets for mounting with self-tapping screws.

Required tools and materials:

  • set of aprons;
  • Phillips head screwdriver;
  • screws at “6”;
  • drill, drill bit at “6”;
  • anti-corrosion mastic (aerosol);
  • additional lighting;
  • jack;
  • balloon wrench.

What happens in practice?

According to statistics, traffic police inspectors rarely issue fines for missing or damaged mudguards. There have been cases when, when a conflict arose, police officers began to look for reasons to find fault with the driver.

The discovery of a breakdown of the mudguard gives the inspector a reason to issue a fine, as well as draw up an order to submit the car for inspection with troubleshooting within 10 working days (in accordance with Part 1 of Article 12.5 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation). After receiving the receipt, the driver has 20 days to pay with a 50% discount.

If, after stopping the vehicle to check documents, the inspector discovers that dirt protection is missing, the driver should politely notify the employee that the unit was recently lost and the vehicle is moving to the repair area.

The calm manner of constructing the dialogue allows us to limit ourselves to a warning, but the owner of the car needs to install the shields on the standard point in the near future. Otherwise, if you stop again, you will not be able to avoid punishment.

On some foreign-made cars and on old Soviet cars, the use of mud flaps is not provided. For confirmation, you must present a diagnostic card, which indicates the absence of shields to repel splashes from under the wheels.

On some car models, the shields are molded together with the bumper, or wings with special reflective surfaces are used. In this case, the installation of additional panels will be regarded as making changes to the design of the vehicle.

What mudguards are suitable for the Granta

According to owner reviews, the following brands of universal mudguards are the most optimal: Elegant and Novline. Many people install mudguards on Granta from Kalina. Their advantage is that the holes on the rear parts fit perfectly, but on the front ones you will have to adjust.

Auto parts stores and online stores offer a choice of any Lada Granta mudguards, the price will depend on the manufacturer and material and starts from 300 rubles per pair.

○ Mudguard law.

First of all, let's look at what exactly mud flaps are - and why are they needed?

Mud flaps are called mudguards on the wheel arch. These are elements, usually made of plastic or thick rubber, which serve to retain and prevent dirt, sand or small gravel chips from flying out from under the wheels. By itself, this element has little effect on driving a car, but its use prevents blinding those driving behind or in the adjacent lane.

It is precisely because the presence of a mudguard ensures traffic safety that, according to traffic regulations, it is one of those elements without which the operation of vehicles is prohibited. Clause 7.5 of the appendix to the traffic rules directly mentions them. Accordingly, if there are no mudguards on the car, the culprit will face a fine.

Note to the driver! Lockers from the SPARCO brand are installed on top of standard mudguards. Fixation with three self-tapping screws into factory holes.

For maximum protection of the car body from water, dirt and snow, install extended mudguards. If the machine is used in climatic regions with minimal precipitation, leave the factory lockers.

Selection of mud flaps for Lada Granta Liftback

Material for the manufacture of front and rear aprons: rubber, polymer compounds of varying strength and elasticity. Plastic accessories are cheaper, but of poorer quality. With frequent use in winter, the material becomes deformed and cracks.

Rubber lockers are elastic, adapted for use at negative (positive) temperatures. The cost of accessories is 7–15% more expensive than analogues, depending on the modification and technical parameters.

Mudguard material for Lada Granta Liftback

When purchasing original aprons, the quality of products from domestic and foreign manufacturers is identical.

To solve the issue of protecting the underbody of the car, Lada Granta owners install enlarged front mudguards. Their installation does not differ from the installation of parts of standard sizes.

Before we begin installing the front mudguards, we dismantle the wheels on the Lada Granta. Then use a wrench to unscrew the 3 lower mounting screws and remove the standard fender liner. Next, we cut grooves in the mudguards to determine the optimal thresholds. This must be done extremely carefully so as not to cut off more from the part than necessary.

Having done this with one mudguard, we attach the second one to it and cut out the same part. Next, we place the mudguard under the fender liner and mark the places where the holes need to be made. We do not completely screw the finished mudguard into place behind the arch liner, move it in the desired direction and tighten the fasteners until they stop.

Having completed this procedure for each of the front wheels, we get a Granta with reliable protection for the bottom and lower part of the front doors.

According to many car enthusiasts, the standard Lada Granta mudguards installed by the manufacturer do not always cope with their main functions. You should understand in detail which of them can be used for a Lada Granta car, and how to install it correctly.

Mud flaps of any car are designed to perform 2 main functions:

  • protect the parts of its lower part from metal corrosion;
  • prevent small crushed stone, debris and larger stones from being thrown from under the wheels onto vehicles driving behind.

A special feature of VAZ vehicle configurations is that not all of them are equipped with front mudguards. In some cases, aesthetically pleasing small-sized protective devices are installed on the Granta, which are not able to perform their main functions. These problems can be solved by installing oversized mud flaps from other car models or using their universal version.

When choosing them, you need to pay attention to the material of manufacture, which includes:

  • rubber;
  • plastic;
  • modern elastic thermoplastic.

Rubber mud flaps are considered the simplest. They are easy to install, generally cope with the task, but in the cold they become dull and crack easily. In this regard, the motorist will have to replace rubber mud flaps almost every season.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHDEc9sgjyU

Mud flaps made of plastic are considered more reliable. They have a higher degree of machine protection, are durable, and aesthetically pleasing. The disadvantages of this option are:

  • certain difficulties in installation;
  • high price.

More often than others, protective devices are installed made of modern material - elastic thermoplastic, which differ:

  • sufficient strength;
  • long service life;
  • resistance to temperature fluctuations;
  • reasonable price.

The disadvantage of these thermoplastic car protection parts is their inability to withstand large volumes of dirt and large stones.

Now we can name the options for mudguards suitable for Grants:

  • universal SPARCO (front and rear);
  • L.Locker (front);
  • Lada Kalina (front and rear);
  • Elegant (front and rear, with minor modifications).

Selected mud flaps can be installed on a car yourself, without the involvement of specialists. To do this, you need to prepare the following tools in advance:

  • set of wrenches;
  • hacksaw;
  • screwdriver;
  • marker;
  • flat head screwdriver.

The installation of front and rear mudguards on the Lada Granta is practically no different.

The algorithm for installing front car protection parts is as follows:

  1. The wheel is removed so that it does not interfere with work in the future.
  2. Use a wrench to unscrew the 3 mounting screws from the bottom and remove the standard fender liner.
  3. Mark and use a hacksaw to cut a groove on the mudguard to determine the appropriate threshold.
  4. A similar groove cut is made on the other front mudguard.
  5. The mudguard and fender liner are combined, and the places where the holes are drilled are marked with a marker.
  6. Using a screwdriver, drill 3 holes.
  7. The prepared vehicle protection element is fastened to the arch liner.
  8. The wheel returns to its place.

To install the rear mudguards on the Grant, first use a flat-tip screwdriver to pry up and pull out the arch piston retainer. Then the latch on the rear bumper is removed in the same way. Next, the rear protection elements of the car are installed according to the fastening algorithm described above.

How to choose mudguards?

Front mud flaps and, accordingly, rear mud flaps on the Grant and in any car are intended to perform two main functions:

  • protection of lower body panels from corrosion;
  • preventing any kind of debris and stones from being thrown from under the wheels towards the road users driving behind.

A distinctive feature of the VAZ model range is that front mudguards are not installed by the factory on all representatives of the model range. In some cases, small decorative protective devices can be seen on the Lada Granta. It is clear that such structures will not be able to fulfill their intended purpose.

So, which ones are better? The installation of oversized mud flaps, borrowed from other cars, for example, mud flaps from Kalina, can help solve this problem.

When choosing the required products, you should pay attention to the material from which a specific model of mudguards is made.

These may include:

  • rubber;
  • plastic;
  • thermoplastic with elasticity.

The most common option is to use rubber products. Their installation is simple and they perform their assigned functions quite effectively. But in frosty weather, such front and rear mudguards on the Grant are prone to hardening and subsequent cracking. This property makes it necessary to resort to replacing these products with new ones every season, including mud flaps from Kalina.

More reliable options include plastic mud flaps. These accessories are more durable and look impressive. But they are not without drawbacks, namely:

  • some difficulties during installation;
  • high cost.

Most often, car enthusiasts are inclined to install products based on modern material - elastic thermoplastic. This version of mudguards has the following differences:

  • has increased strength;
  • serves for a very long time;
  • resistant to temperature changes;
  • has a relatively low price.

Among the shortcomings, the owners note:

  • inability to withstand increased volume of dirt;
  • inability to cope with large stones.

Now the time has come to identify the modifications of the mudguards that are best suited for the Lada Grant:

  • “SPARCO” (for front and rear wheels), which have versatility;
  • “L.Locker”, designed for the front axle;
  • "Lada Kalina" (for both axles);
  • “Elegant” (“front” and “rear” versions, slightly modified).

Modern mud flaps on the Grant are made taking into account the aerodynamic features of the body. In motion, an air flow is generated that flows around the body panels and prevents dirt from settling on their surface.

Sequence of actions when installing (replacing) mudguards

  1. We take priority safety measures: install wheel chocks, engage first gear, and squeeze the handbrake.
  2. We jack up the “necessary” side of the car and remove the wheel.
  3. We apply an apron and mark the location of the factory holes. We mark new ones as needed.
  4. We drill the missing holes and lubricate them with anti-corrosion mastic to prevent the formation of rust.
  5. We remove the factory locker and install it on top of the standard one if you purchase a SPARCO.

By analogy, we fix the rear mudguards on the Grant Liftback.

Reviews

Positive
1.Vasily: Factory lockers are enough for me. They look nicer than other analogues. If you encounter a large puddle along the route, then nothing will save you from the mud.
2.Vladimir: It’s already been a year since I bought the car, there are no comments, the aprons are holding strong, they’ve survived the winter and haven’t cracked.
3.Kirill: I caught a snowdrift several times in winter, I thought that I would tear off the apron, but nothing, they held on confidently.
4.Vladislav: I’m pleased with the quality of production of the factory aprons, they repeatedly clung to the curb, they held up and did not deform.
5.Ignat: I’ve heard a number of negative reviews about the quality of the plastic, but I can’t confirm it. I've been using the car for over a year, factory lockers are installed.
Negative
1.Victor: The standard aprons lasted six months, after which they fell off in the winter. I didn’t bother and bought new universal ones.
2.Ivan: the quality of production of my native aprons is poor, they are fragile, in the cold they become deformed and burst. They recommended installing it from Renault Logan, the location of the fasteners is identical.
3.Gennady: I don’t recommend factory lockers, install universal ones from Renault Logan. The quality is poor, they become deformed in the cold.

Lada Granta Liftback must be equipped with mud flaps to protect the body from dirt, snow, and sand. Since the width of the standard lockers is not enough for effective protection, we recommend installing long mudguards on the Granta Liftback.

Installation of mudguards for Lada Granta Liftback

When purchasing aprons, give preference to those made of rubber; plastic ones are more likely to become deformed and subject to damage. Be sure to check for the presence of a mounting hole in the top of the mudguard. If not available, drill it yourself.

Reliable fixation is the key to long service life.

○ Lawyer's advice: how to avoid a fine.

But let’s imagine that, despite the rarity, you are the one who is unlucky, and the traffic police inspector who stopped you is trying to fine you for the lack of mud flaps. What to do in this case?

First of all, you should ask the traffic police officer on what basis he requires you to have mud flaps. If your car is old or foreign-made, there is a chance to avoid a fine: on old Soviet cars, mud flaps were not initially installed by the manufacturer, and some models of foreign cars, instead of rubber mud flaps, can be equipped with specially shaped wings that prevent dirt from flying away.

At the same time, by virtue of Art. 1.5 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation in this case, it is not you who must prove that mudguards are not provided for by the design - but the inspector that there is a violation. If you have a valid inspection certificate, which was carried out without mudguards, this method will work, since installing mudguards is already a change in the design of the car.

In addition, you can refer to clause 2.3.1 of the traffic rules

According to this norm, if there is a malfunction specified in the list from the appendix to the traffic rules, the driver is obliged to take measures for repairs, and if this is not possible, move to the repair site, observing safety precautions. The absence of mudguards is not one of those malfunctions in which movement is absolutely prohibited (as, for example, in the event of a malfunction of the brake system)

If a protocol is drawn up, you will need to make a note in it with the following content: “There were no faults when leaving the parking lot, I acted in accordance with the traffic rules.” This will come in handy if the mudguards provided by the design actually fall off along the way. In general, do not agree with a fine under any circumstances - otherwise you will not be able to challenge it.

Well, the most important thing is to keep an eye on the car and check the strength of the mudguards. This is easier than appealing the decision to avoid a fine.

Fine for mud flaps, passenger car, must be installed? Dmitry Zmaznev will talk about this.

Installation of front and rear mudguards on a Lada Granta car

Many car enthusiasts prefer to install only front mudguards. However, protective elements for the rear wheels are no less needed. By installing them, you will protect not only your car from damage, but also the front of the car behind you.

Replacing rear mudguards on a Lada Granta is done in almost the same way as installing front protective devices. To dismantle the old part, use a flat screwdriver to pry up the arch piston retainer. We take out the latch and set it aside. We perform the same action with the clamp holding the mudguard on the rear bumper.

Parts from the Lada Kalina car are excellent for installing rear mudguards. In this case, you can choose both standard and increased protective elements. The main thing is that the parts reliably cover the body and bumper of the Lada Grant from stones and sand.

Arch protection

Wheel arches on Lada cars have always been a weak point. All sorts of dirt and debris always accumulate there, and some other oil will leak out: and you end up with corrosion all over the wheel. Previously, even on Soviet cars, iron arch protection was installed, which was tightly attached over the original arches and, in fact, simply rusted in their place. During their operation, various problems often arose, up to their complete wear and falling onto the wheel while driving. Today, cars, including Lada, are supplied immediately with a certain protection of the arches from corrosion. The opinions of car owners about them are very different: some say that this is quite enough, while others are sure that additional reinforcement is simply necessary. In any case, if you drive a lot, and especially in winter, then installing fender liners is simply necessary.

The first thing that becomes noticeable if you don’t install fender liners is how the paint slowly begins to peel off from the edge of the arches. All sorts of flying pebbles and other dirt just slowly knock it down

And inside the arches simply begin to rust, and if you do not pay attention to all this, then after a few years you may notice with horror that your suspension begins to fall off. And here there will be no time for jokes: you will have to weld the holes so as not to weld them into the new arches into the body

And it’s good if the body is initially galvanized. In this case, you can ignore everything that is happening for a longer time, but the result will still be the same.

The first thing you can do to protect your Lada car from corrosion is to install plastic fender liners, which have infected the car market with their popularity for a long time. They cover the entire arch with high quality, they rust and are made of such dense plastic that they cannot break in the arch. The only subjective drawback to using them is that most often they are attached to the arch with self-tapping screws. It is really subjective, since during normal installation the holes are treated with anticorrosive, and very often the wheel arch liners are simply glued on and there is simply no need to make holes. In addition, modern cars often already have special holes for mounting fender liners. You just have to specifically look for the necessary fender liners for this car; perhaps this will be some difficulty, but most often you can cope. As a last resort, you can always order from the manufacturer, although you will have to wait some time.
