Cars of the classic series developed by VAZ do not particularly pamper our fellow citizens with additional equipment. Power steering was not installed as standard on the VAZ 2107; none of the rear-wheel drive models of this manufacturer can boast of such a sophistication. Additional equipment to reduce the load on the driver and facilitate control can only be installed as an option.

The power steering for the seven was specially designed and manufactured by one of AvtoVAZ’s development plants. The kit has been successfully tested and approved for use on vehicles of this model. It should be remembered that the operation of vehicles with changes made independently to the steering design is prohibited; in fact, this is a restriction on the use of non-certified equipment.

A power steering wheel was not installed on the VAZ 2107: this mechanism was difficult to install in the systems of a rear-wheel drive car, and besides, such equipment significantly increased the market value of the car.

The first hydraulic boosters for the VAZ 2107 were designed and manufactured at AvtoVAZ. However, production batches could not boast of the latest equipment - power steering was sold as an additional option.

Why do we even need additional equipment for the “seven” if the car already fully met all the requirements of its time?

Hydraulic power steering (or power steering) is an element of the vehicle’s hydraulic system, a structural part of the steering wheel. The main task of the power steering is to ease the driver’s efforts when driving a car, that is, to make steering turns easier and more accurate.

The VAZ 2107 power steering device is designed in such a way that even if it fails, the car can be driven, the steering wheel will just turn harder.

Car owners of the “Seven”, whose cars have factory power steering, highlight a number of advantages of such additional equipment:

  • minimizing fuel consumption;

When purchasing, it is important to make sure that the proposed kit has a technical passport certified by the wet seal of the manufacturer. Power steering device

We can say that the “seven” is equipped with the simplest type of power steering. It contains several basic elements that make it easier to control the car:

  1. Hydraulic pump mechanism. It is through the cavities of the pump that an uninterrupted supply of working fluid is carried out and the necessary pressure is created.
  2. Steering gearbox with distributor. This device is designed to ensure the passage of air flow. The air directs the oil in two directions: into the cylinder cavity or in the return direction - from the cylinder to the tank containing the working fluid.
  3. Hydraulic cylinder. It is this mechanism that converts oil pressure into movements of the piston and rod, which reduces physical force when applying pressure to the steering wheel.
  4. Working fluid (oil). Oil is necessary for the stable operation of the entire power steering system, since it not only transmits movement from the pump to the hydraulic cylinder, but also simultaneously lubricates all components. Oil is poured into a special container and supplied through high-pressure hoses.

In addition to the equipment, it is necessary to purchase a special operating fluid for hydraulic systems. It is marked ATF; the use of substandard oils leads to rapid equipment failure.

Is it possible to install a hydraulic booster on a VAZ 2107

If we talk about equipping the “seven” with a non-factory power steering, then we can consider this operation appropriate and even necessary.

The installation of power steering on a VAZ 2107 is dictated by the complexity of the vehicle’s management in various operating modes. Only with a booster does the quality of control and reliability of driving on uneven roads improve.

Thus, structurally, the “seven” of any year of manufacture is ready for installation work, however, it is recommended to turn to specialists for this service, since it will be extremely difficult to install the power steering mechanisms yourself.

You should also take into account the disadvantages that the driver of a VAZ 2107 will inevitably encounter after installing a power steering wheel:

  • high cost of the power steering kit;
  • installation work is problematic (you need to pay for the services of a professional);
  • the need for regular maintenance (checking the oil level, lubricant, etc.).


In winter, the oil may freeze and, as a result, the power steering may not work correctly until the engine warms up.

The VAZ-2107, to which thousands of compatriots are accustomed, is inferior in several respects to its foreign counterparts, which is why motorists who want to improve the characteristics of their own car do their own tuning of the VAZ-2107 steering. The most affordable version of the EUR for the VAZ 2107 is the “Aviaagregat” mechanism from a domestic manufacturer. The mounting location for this device is the location of the standard steering column. The design of the electric amplifier includes a relatively small number of parts:

  • the amplifier itself;
  • bracket for its fixation;
  • intermediate value cardan;
  • casing, wiring and fastening elements.

From what year is the gyroscope installed on the field?

Salam to everyone! There are already articles on this topic, but since each case is unique in its own way, I will describe in detail how it all happened. I’ll say right away that the article is not for the faint of heart and not for those whose hands do not grow from their shoulders. There are many places where non-standard situations arise: somewhere to knock, somewhere to bend, somewhere to file, and somewhere to weld. Everything needs to be done reliably, carefully thinking through every step.

It all started with a “Shniv” gearbox, which was accidentally caught at a flea market and was given away for almost nothing.

Next, I began to look for other spare parts and came across the website of the manufacturer of these same devices: “Steering Components LLC.” I’ll say a few words about this resource. Since I had not installed power steering before this incident, the support representative was at one point inundated with a barrage of my chaotic and not entirely competent, or rather not at all competent, questions. The representative withstood my onslaught with dignity and brilliantly answered each of the questions, thereby creating in me strong confidence in the seriousness of their enterprise. In the process of communication, it turned out that a ready-made “GUR FOR VAZ 2101-2107 CLASSIC” kit is currently available for purchase. This is a kit that is installed in the corresponding car without any “collective farm” (in the worst sense of the word). But since this option is too expensive for me, and I already had the Chevy-Nivovsky gearbox in stock, after clarification of all my questions, the rest of the VAZ kit was additionally ordered without, accordingly, the gearbox.

In addition to the power steering kit itself, the fan, brakes, and steering wheel were modified. The fan remains the same, let's finish it a little.

You need to buy an additional Vacuum Brake Booster (VUT) from Niva, also known as the “nine-wheel” one, and you will also need a very rare part, this is the “Nivovsky” bracket for the VUT. The main brake cylinder (GTC) can also be supplied from the Niva, but I personally am not satisfied with the presence of brake hoses, so the GTZ was also supplied from the Nine.

As it turned out, a small series of “classic fives” equipped with this same power steering was released. As I understand it, they did not change the standard VUT and GTZ, they simply shifted it forward by 6 mm using an adapter plate, and re-drilled the hole in the brake pedal with a shift of 6 mm (the old hole was pre-welded).

Yes, I almost forgot, the brake/clutch pedals will have to be removed, the plate at the bottom (under the gearbox) is slightly filed down and the brake pedal is bent to go around the thicker steering shaft and the gearbox housing protruding into the interior. In this regard, I don’t know what options there are, maybe some kind of Nivov pedal, in short, I “hit” it with a copper hammer and digested a nickel of the pedal itself, much like in this article.

Why not hydraulic?

There are two types of power steering:

  1. Electromechanical.
  2. Hydraulic.

When the hydraulic power steering operates, high oil pressure is created in the system. The design of the hydraulic booster consists of supply pipes, a pump, a special reservoir and working fluid. The pump creates oil pressure, which affects the entire mechanism, making it much easier to turn the wheels.

Therefore, turning the steering wheel will be much easier. In general, the design of a hydraulic booster is very complex, installation takes a long time, and all mechanisms need to be regularly maintained. Only in this case will the hydraulic booster work perfectly.

If the car does not have a hydraulic booster installed, it is very difficult to install it. You will have to purchase additional parts, as well as make very serious changes to the steering mechanism. It is for this reason that it is not advisable to install a hydraulic booster on the “seven”.

Electric amplifier

It has one big advantage - the cost is almost half that of a hydraulic booster. Installing the device on the “seven” is very simple, there will be no difficulties. When using an electric amplifier, there is no need to carry out a technical inspection; it is very reliable and durable.

Unlike a hydraulic booster, normal operation does not require refilling fluid or maintaining the pump and pipelines in working condition. You just need to connect the device to the car's electrical wiring. It is for these reasons that this power steering design is installed on “classic” series cars.

From what year is the gyroscope installed on the field?

This article will be of interest to owners of Nivas produced before 2007. After 2007, they began installing power steering on the Niva from the factory; until 2007, they thought that it was not needed. Having driven a VAZ 21214M with power steering, now I can’t even imagine how you can drive without it; after all, the steering wheel on the Niva is quite heavy. I decided to look into the issue of installing power steering. I analyzed the information on the Internet and came to the conclusion that there are 2 ways to solve this problem. The first is the installation of a hydraulic booster, the second is the installation of an electric booster.

Power steering. Two types of hydro boosters can be installed on the old-style Niva. The first is from Chevrolet Niva with a ZF gearbox, and the second is Russian-made with a specially designed one for Niva 2121-213. During installation and observations, it can be said that the fundamental difference in these G/amplifiers is that in the latter, the gearbox housing is steel, not cast iron, and should better withstand shock loads (they are often installed on vehicles prepared for “active off-road”), as well as the bipod is more everted, but so far there have been no complaints about any of the guru designs, as the companies that install them claim.

True, it is necessary to note the difference in the installation of these structures. The Russian-made hydraulic booster is heavier. In the case of installation on a Niva 2121, it is often necessary to change the vacuum booster and its bracket on the 214th or Sh/Niva model, because Gur does not become otherwise.

A hydraulic booster for Niva costs between 27,000 and 31,000. The kit contains everything necessary for installation, including instructions.

If you are a technician, then I think you can easily figure out how to install it; in extreme cases, there are detailed instructions on the Internet with photographs for installing it, but just in case, I copied the procedure for installing the power steering at the end of the article. If you don’t want to bother installing it, then installing it in the service costs about 5,000 rubles.

Electric power steering. Electric power steering is an original steering column consisting of: a steering column, an electric motor, a worm gear, and a control unit. Electric power steering, in my opinion, is easier to install, and its cost ranges from 14,000 to 17,000 rubles. This is what it looks like.

Advantages over the hydraulic booster (according to the manufacturer): • Manufacturability of installation - the EURU is mounted in one unit on the car without intruding into the engine compartment. • Reliability - there are no components inherent in hydraulic boosters (hoses, pulleys, fluids). • Environmental friendliness. • Energy saving, lower fuel consumption from 5% to 8% - the EURU operates only when the steering wheel is turned and mainly in parking and low-speed modes. • Information content - EURU ensures an increase in steering effort with increasing vehicle speed. • Price - EURU is 1.6 times cheaper than a hydraulic booster.

Main technical characteristics of the EURU: • Supply voltage (nominal) - 12V; • Maximum compensating moment from 35 to 42 Nm (corresponds to a decrease in steering force from 22 kgf to 3.5 kgf); • Maximum current consumption is 55A; • Weight of the electric mechanism is 10.5 kg.

Equipment

Without modifications, you can install the Priora’s electric power steering on the “seven”. Products manufactured by are used with the same success. Device contents:

  1. Directly electric amplifier.
  2. Intermediate cardan shaft.
  3. Fasteners.
  4. Wiring.
  5. Brackets for fastening the electric power steering on the steering wheel of the “seven”.
  6. Decorative plait.

When purchasing, be sure to check the equipment included with the device. If some item is not in the box, you must immediately inform the seller about it. Otherwise, problems will arise during installation.

Steering tuning

Tuning the VAZ-2107 steering can begin with a well-founded decision to replace the factory steering wheel with a sportier device with a diameter of 320 mm. Such a unit will give the car owner many advantages: firstly, he will be able to park with greater maneuverability. When upgrading the steering wheel, do not forget about installing a safety glass.

Those motorists who prefer sports tuning (low-number rack) should be prepared to pay twice as much money for the unit than for a simple standard device. However, after installation, the car will be able to turn the wheels in just two steering turns.

The third step to improve the car could be adjusting the camber and toe. Experts who have been working with different VAZ models for many years increase toe-in and negative camber on the front axle. At the same time, it is imperative to pay attention to the toe-in of the rear wheelbase, which should, on the contrary, decrease.

Basic Installation Recommendations

Then the steering wheel is inserted (you can take it from a Lada Kalina). The next step is to connect the electrical part of the EUR. The red wire to the battery is connected through the fuse. The brown one connects to any mounting pin of this mechanism. The orange wire (ignition) is connected to the blue (ignition switch) through a fuse. The tachometer cables are connected to the dashboard chip to the blue-brown wire. The gray cable from the speed sensor is connected to the wire running from its 2 to 9 pin of the ECU.

Some VAZ 2107 drivers decide to install power steering on their car. This pleasure will cost them 5-6 thousand rubles. more expensive than installing an electric booster system. However, the workflow will take longer due to upcoming rework.

VAZ 2107 is the legendary AvtoVAZ model. However, for all its advantages, by modern standards the design clearly lacks advanced elements. For example, power steering - after all, all cars of the latest generation, even in basic configurations, are necessarily equipped with this mechanism.
