VAZ-2121 (21213/21214) is a small-class all-terrain vehicle (SUV). The body is monocoque, three-door, universal type. Transmission with permanent all-wheel drive, four-speed manual gearbox (starting from 21213 - five-speed), two-speed transfer case and locking center differential. The geometric parameters of cross-country ability are good due to the fairly high ground clearance (220 mm), small body overhangs (approach angle 32°, departure angle 37°) and a relatively short 2.2-meter wheelbase. The first VAZ-2121 model was equipped with a VAZ-2121 engine, created on the basis of the VAZ-2106 engine, an in-line four-cylinder carburetor with a volume of 1580 cm³. Power 75 hp at 5400 rpm, maximum torque 116 Nm at 3400 rpm. The restyled modification of the VAZ-21213 was equipped with a VAZ-21213 carburetor engine with a displacement increased to 1690 cm³ and a power of 80.8 hp. at 5200 rpm and maximum torque of 125.3 Nm at 3000 rpm.
One of the features of the Niva was the use in its design of large-scale units from the VAZ model range. Thus, from the VAZ-2106 model, a 1.6-liter engine with a timing chain drive, a gearbox and a rear axle gearbox were used (on the first Nivas, the axle gearboxes used main gears from the VAZ-2101 with a gear ratio of 4.3). The development of a car that would successfully replace the Niva (2131) in the model range began at AvtoVAZ back in the second half of the 1980s. But it was a time of crisis, and full-fledged design was constantly postponed. And so, in 1998, the Volzhsky Automobile Plant presented the long-awaited VAZ 2123 SUV. The car was named “New Niva” (“Niva II”). VAZ 2123 had a rather original design and was not similar to other VAZ models. The modern streamlined silhouette was in good harmony with the optics and false radiator grille. The interior was pleased with the high seating position, which improved the already excellent visibility. The design of the dashboard was similar to the smaller one in the VAZ 2115 class, but many original changes were made.
The design of the VAZ 2123 uses many components from the older Niva, including the power unit, which has been modified. “New Niva” was produced in limited quantities between 1998 and 2002. In September 2002, the VAZ 2123 was already produced under the Chevrolet brand. General Motors bought it from Volzhsky and made some adjustments and improvements to the design of this SUV. The VAZ 2123 was never launched into mass production, which cannot be said about its successor, the Chevrolet Niva, which received recognition from many domestic motorists.

In order to save space in the car body, the tank is located under the bottom and has a rather complex bent structure with pockets and unconnected cavities. It is especially important to remember that in hot weather it is undesirable to fill the fuel tank to the limit, since it should contain a small reserve volume to compensate for expansion and fuel vapors
Maintenance
For normal operation, engine 21213 should be serviced within the specified periods:
- 10,000 km - change the oil along with the filter;
- 20,000 km – checking the functionality of the thermostat, updating the cabin filter;
- 30,000 km – replacement of the fuel and air filters;
- 60,000 km – spark plugs and batteries are renewed and the crankcase ventilation is cleaned;
- 100,000 km – reinstallation of the oxygen sensor;
- 200,000 km - the timing chain may need to be replaced.
Despite the fact that the internal combustion engine device is copied from longitudinal engines with a much higher service life, it is used on an SUV with non-disconnectable all-wheel drive, so the components wear out more intensively.

The front part of the cabin is no different from the three-door interior. The usual Zhiguli seating position, the same panel, seats and controls. But for the rear passengers it’s a real holiday. I'm not even talking about the convenience of getting into the second row - climbing through your own door is much more comfortable than through the narrow opening between the B-pillar and the reclined front seat. Initially, the car was planned to be equipped with a powerful diesel engine, final drives, rear torsion bar suspension and even a tire pressure regulation system, but later they decided to create a simpler version with a high degree of unification with the models already produced by AvtoVAZ, which was economically justified. This prototype allowed the design bureau under the leadership of Peter Prusov to significantly reduce the time needed to create the car.
The VAZ-2121 appeared in a form close to the serial one in 1972. The artist Valery Semushkin worked on the design of the new car. The car, according to the designer, was supposed to suit residents of both cities and villages.
In 1974, the car was put up for state tests and in the same year received its own name “Niva”, which was patented.
In addition to sales at home, Niva was actively promoted in foreign markets. Over forty years, more than 500 thousand SUVs were sent abroad.
