The service life of the Priora/Kalina timing belt depends on the operating conditions and the quality of the product itself. The manufacturer recommends checking the belt at least once every 45,000 km. mileage If signs of wear appear, it is recommended to replace it with a new one. Do you know which timing belt is better to choose? |
The timing belt (Timing Belt) is a closed rubber belt with notches on the inside. It is designed to synchronize the engine crankshaft and camshaft.
What timing belt is installed on Priora and Kalina from the factory ? Standard timing belts for Niva Chevrolet and Lada Priora, Kalina from GATES (Gates). Belt part number: 21126-1006040 (5631XS).
The price of a timing belt starts from 1200 rubles. and depends greatly on regions.
A broken timing belt on a Priora or Kalina can lead to bending of the valves, which will require expensive engine repairs. To prevent this from happening, you should regularly check its condition. When choosing a timing belt, you need not only to choose the right manufacturer, but also to be able to distinguish the original from the fake, because according to statistics, more than half of the products are fake. An example of how to distinguish an original Gates timing belt.
To reduce the likelihood of purchasing a low-quality product, it is recommended to buy a timing belt from trusted suppliers, or order spare parts online from trusted sites. (see also Replacing the Timing Belt). What reviews can you leave about timing belts for Priora/Kalina?

The normal operation of the engine depends on the quality of consumables such as timing rollers. When choosing a repair kit from a well-known manufacturer, you should be sure to verify its authenticity - you can purchase a fake on the market even from a trusted seller. For a car such as the Lada Priora or another modern VAZ model, replacement timing pulleys are produced by a huge number of enterprises. The wide range of prices for a repair kit makes it difficult to choose, because the highest cost does not mean the best quality of the product.
The review below contains information about the most reliable and trusted brands under which timing rollers are produced. The rating was formed on the basis of the manufacturer's technical data, assessments of professional auto mechanics, opinions and experience gained by owners who have made their choice in favor of a particular brand.
Timing belt tensioner rollers for VAZ (Lada) Priora
for repair of VAZ (Lada) Priora
It was in trial, it ended after 2 years, I just bought trw, there is a little play and jamming from the factory.
The problem with the rollers does not last even 10,000 km and they begin to make noise and make other indecent sounds. But today it just killed me that I put on a new video and went and heard what kind of buzz it was making.
The original Conder roller clicked—you can hear clicks when the hood is open when it’s hot. I bought a Trialli video - I know China, but it looks good - I returned it to the store after 5 days. Ordered and installed Gates - 7 days, returned.
I bought it at the VBF store, who knows if it’s a fake or not, the balls don’t click, but the rustling noise persists after 2 days.
Over the weekend I replaced the timing belt rollers because... There was noise from the timing belt. After checking, it turned out that the roller bearings were noisy. My father and I took off the belt and checked the bearings. Both bearings had play and were dry. The support one even wedged a little.
We went to get new ones, but finding normal rollers turned out to be problematic. Everything they looked at was of dubious origin and did not inspire confidence, and was sold together with a belt (Gates). My belt was in excellent condition, so I was not going to overpay for it.
After visiting 5 stores, we found the rollers separately from the Trialli belt. This is their original number (21216-1006135, 21216-1006238). After installation the noise disappeared. Belt tension roller kit, support/tensioner Trialli Linea Qualita.
I installed a Trialli timing belt tensioner pulley on a chisel (I know it’s China, but there was no choice, but it was necessary urgently) - at first glance, the quality was good, there were no complaints about the appearance or rotation. True, in terms of service life - I sold the car 2tkm after the replacement.
Those who installed it are all happy. They have a double row support bearing.
The scientist, through bitter experience, after repairing the “head” due to the wedge of the roller, decided, out of harm’s way, to change the rollers between belt replacements. The last “arrival” was at 97 thousand. 35 have passed. It’s time!)
It is worth noting that the dismantled Gates rollers were in very good condition. Now they installed Andykar.
I have a Priora with power steering, so I was tired of changing the tensioner pulley of the alternator belt! I bought Ladovsky and Trially and Gates to no avail! They don't walk very well! They start rustling loudly almost from the very beginning! I found a video from the cartridge company!
It is stated in the description that the bearing is from NSK! I installed it, so far so good! I was surprised that the surface itself is poly-wedge steel!

How to adjust the generator roller on a Priora with your own hands
The generator belt tensioner roller is a small but very important part of the machine. If it fails, the operation of attachments and electrics is at risk. But you can diagnose, lubricate and even change a spare part yourself; it does not require much effort or serious knowledge in the automotive industry.
On Lada Prioras with air conditioning and power steering, as well as those equipped with power steering (electric or hydraulic power steering), the alternator belt is additionally maintained in an optimally tensioned state by a special roller. The Priora generator belt tension roller is an important part that ensures the operation of the attachment.
Which timing belt tensioner rollers should I choose for VAZ (Lada) Priora?
Last month, PartReview users preferred Gates. 12% of positive votes belong to this manufacturer.
In second place were the Patron timing belt tensioner rollers - 12%.
INA closes the top three with 12% of the votes.
In the general rating of timing belt tensioner pulleys, which takes into account the opinions of owners of different brands and models of cars, these brands occupy the following positions:
- Gates received 4th place, PR score - 68. Data from 26 reviews and 83 votes are taken into account.
- Patron has not yet managed to collect the required number of reviews to participate in the rating. If you add a review and indicate this brand and model of your car, you will help fix this.
- INA - 1st place, and PR score was 83. Data from 64 reviews and 202 votes are taken into account.
Where is the Priora generator roller located?
The tension roller of the Lada Priora generator belt is used to hold the auxiliary drive belt on the pulleys of the drive device; it is responsible for a tight fit and preventing slipping.
The drive belt in a Priora with 8 or 16 valves is located under the hood on the right side of the engine (along the direction of the car). If you look directly at the assembly, the bypass roller will be located on the top left, it is clearly visible. This is noticeable in numerous photos of the Priora’s engine compartment available on the Internet, and in videos with instructions for repair and replacement.
The part is of an eccentric type and is visually distinguishable due to the off-center bolt.
How to properly replace a timing belt
To prevent the drive belt from breaking and repairs, it is necessary to promptly replace and tighten the product. Work on replacing and adjusting tension should only be carried out on a cold engine.
Tools
What you will need to complete the task:
- set of wrenches;
- a device for installing and adjusting the tensioner, can be purchased at a car store;
- ruler or construction tape;
- two screwdrivers - with a flat blade and a Phillips blade;
- set of star keys;
- clean rags.
Channel In Sandro's garage, I made a video showing the procedure for replacing the timing belt on a 16-valve Priora engine.
Instructions with pictures
Below is a detailed description with photos of how to install a new belt and correctly align it with the marks:
- Using a star wrench, remove the five bolts that secure the upper timing cover. Dismantle it.
- Turn the engine crankshaft clockwise until marks 1, which are located on the camshaft toothed disks, are aligned with marks 2 located on the rear cover of the unit drive. If, as a result of the above actions, the pulleys continue to rotate, do everything again, but now the crankshaft must be turned two turns. To align the marks, the screw securing the tensioner pulley must be turned using a 15 mm wrench. It is advisable to maintain a tension torque of 20-25 Nm, but this cannot be done without a torque tool. Set the crankshaft and camshaft to the top dead center position of the compression stroke of the first cylinder.
- To check the position of the crankshaft, remove the rubberized plug from the top of the clutch housing. It will be more convenient to disconnect the cooling system pipes, and also disconnect the connector with wires from the refrigerant temperature controller. Make sure that the mark on the flywheel is located in front of the notch installed on the clutch housing cover. To prevent the crankshaft from turning when unscrewing the screws securing the accessory drive shaft, you will need the help of a friend. The assistant needs to sit behind the wheel and engage fifth gear while holding the brake pedal. At this time, use a 17mm socket to remove the screw securing the drive pulley. Dismantle this unit.
- Remove the washer. To ensure that the further assembly procedure does not cause difficulties, we recommend fixing the camshaft pulleys relative to each other; this will require a wooden wedge. It must be carefully, effortlessly driven between the teeth of the shafts. The wedge itself should be placed along the grain of the wood.
- Using a 15mm wrench, loosen the screw securing the tensioner. As a result of these actions, the roller will rotate, which will weaken the tensioner.
- Remove the worn belt from the camshafts. Remove the product from the coolant pump pulleys as well as the crankshaft. Remove the strap from the engine compartment. Remember that after dismantling the product, it is not allowed to rotate the crankshaft and camshaft over long distances, otherwise this will lead to contact of the valves with the pistons, as a result of which the former may bend.
- When changing the strap, the support and tension roller of the product are also replaced. To do this, unscrew the screw securing the device and remove it with the thrust washer. Using a 15 mm wrench, unscrew the bolts that secure the support element; it is removed from the seat with a screw and washer. Assess the operating condition of the pumping device. There should be no traces of refrigerant leakage on the mechanism body. If the pump is working, then its shaft rotates freely and without any extraneous sounds or jamming. Otherwise you need to replace it.
- Before installing new rollers, a special sealant must be applied to the threads of the screws that secure them. The bolt of the support device must be tightened to a torque of 34-41 Nm, but the tensioner does not need to be fully tightened. Before installing the belt, make sure that the camshaft marks match the marks located on the rear drive cover. With the disk of auxiliary elements removed, you can independently adjust the position of the crankshaft by aligning marks 1 on the toothed pulley and marks 2 on the oil pump device.
- Install a new belt on the crankshaft. Pull the product, placing one part of it behind the support roller and the other behind the tension roller. After this, the strap can be put on the camshaft pulleys. If, as a result of dismantling, you used a tool to fasten the pulleys, then at this stage it must be dismantled.
- The final step is to adjust the tension of the product. To do this, use pliers to turn the tensioner counterclockwise. This action is performed until the first cutout on the outside of the device cage is aligned with the second cutout on the inner sleeve. Use a 15mm wrench to tighten the screw. If you have a torque wrench, then tensioning should be done taking into account a torque of 20-25 Nm. After installation, the crankshaft must be turned by the screw securing the pulley several turns. The node must be moved clockwise. Make sure that the marks on the crankshaft and camshafts match during installation. If any devices, including the pump, pump and other components, need to be replaced, it is better to do this during the repair.
Which generator roller is better to install on the Priora?
Of the good non-original “prior guides” note:
- Hofer (HF code 608230);
- Gates (T39176);
- Lynx (PB-5039);
- Trialli (CM170);
- Marel (2110).

Less common are accessories from INA and Andycar. Among the inexpensive and fairly popular options for replacing the tension roller of a Lada Priora generator belt with air conditioning or power steering, we can highlight the products of the Vologda Bearing Plant - the VBF roller (catalog number 830900AKE). But reviews from car owners indicate the “floating” quality of VBF parts, and their purchase should be approached with caution. Many people advise installing Gates spare parts.
There are also drive belt repair kits supplied with this part, for example, Trialli GD613.
Video review of replacing the accessory drive belt on a 2170
A video review of the Priora repair was recorded especially for this site and specifically for this article. It clearly and easily shows the entire process of replacing a belt.
I hope that after watching the video there are even fewer questions left. If there are any, you can ask them below in the comments or on the channel.
How to replace or tighten the alternator belt using Priority and belt replacement technology
Hello, dear motorists! Well, let's move on to specific cars and their fans?
"PRIOR GUARDS". This is what owners of cars from one of the latest VAZ series called “Lada” call themselves. "Priora".
I like the stylish and modern car in many ways. The ingrained belief that domestic cars are useless for anything is gradually dissolving. Cars have indeed become more convenient, attractive, and their technical equipment has improved significantly.
The differences between Priora and previous modifications are noticeable immediately as soon as the hood is opened. The new owner of a new Lada will have to learn a lot from scratch. Such a simple, at first glance, manipulation, like replacing the generator belt with a Prior, will require significant effort.
A distinctive feature of new car models is the ability to choose a car with additional equipment already in the basic configuration. Thus, the Priora can be equipped with a hydraulic booster (power steering) or air conditioning.
Of course, driving such a machine becomes even more comfortable, but the price for comfort becomes a more complex design of the generator belt drive. The Priora alternator belt with air conditioning or GUR is much longer, follows a different path (alternator belt chain), and is maintained and changed according to completely different rules.
Signs of tensioner failure
The following symptoms indicate poor adjustment or failure of the unit:
- whistling, increased noise, rustling from the generator unit (extraneous sounds are not necessarily associated with the tensioner, but may indicate its misadjustment or malfunction);
- hum and buzzing that occurs when the belt roller bearing of the Priora generator wears out;
- vibration of the roller and belt, indicating a worn bushing;
- too much belt deflection (more than 8 cm) or excessive tension (less than 0.6 cm) - if detected, adjustment must be made;
- the fastening bolt begins to heat up;
- backlash in the tension roller (this, like the hum, indicates a worn bearing);
- uneven wear and stretching of the belt on one side (as a rule, this sign indicates a bend in the tensioner bracket).
Why does the generator roller whistle and make noise?
The whistling noise may not be related to a malfunction. For example, sometimes the unit begins to make noise and hum in humid weather when moisture gets on it and the pulleys. After warming up and drying, the symptoms stop.
But if the car starts to whistle, squeak and rustle “when cold” and constantly, this may indicate:
- thickened tension roller lubricant or its deficiency;
- sagging or excessive belt tension, as well as its wear;
- slipping of the drive belt due to oil getting on the surface;
- Tension roller malfunction;
- misalignment of pulleys.

The first thing to check is the tensioner eccentric roller and belt tension.
What bearings are on the Priora generator (VAZ 2170): size, price, article number
We have already figured out how to replace failed parts. Now it remains to understand which bearing is better to buy. There are different generators on Priors - 115A or 90A. The second is for a less powerful car without air conditioning and power steering. Ball bearings have a number (marking). The front element is 6303, the rear element is 6202.
There are a lot of both original and non-original spare parts on the market:
- Front ball bearing 6303: FAG 6303 2ZR (Germany), SKF 6303-2Z (Sweden), KOYO 6303 ZZ, CM (Japan), NTN 6303 ZZ (Japan).
- Rear ball bearing 6202: FAG 6202-С-2HRS, SKF 6202-2-RSH, KOYO 2RS, NTN; 6202LLU.
In addition to the bearings listed above, below is a table that will help you navigate the offers on the market and select the best quality part:
How and with what to lubricate
If the check reveals a lack of lubricant, it can be changed. You can use Litol-24.
To lubricate the tension roller of the Priora 16 class generator, you should:
- Dismantle it.
- Remove the anthers.
- Wash the tensioner to remove any remaining old grease (this will also help to visually check the condition of the bearings).
- Apply a layer of Litol.
- Reinstall the anthers, mount the eccentric roller and check the tension.
In addition to Litol, the CRC lithium-based consistency demonstrates good qualities. It is resistant to high temperatures and rotation speeds. Chevron Delo Grease EP NLGI 2 has similar properties; the authors of repair video guides often recommend lubricating the mechanism with it.
It is important not to apply too much lubricant, otherwise it will begin to squeeze out onto the belt.
The best timing rollers for a Priora 16 valves
I've been wanting to write for a long time and now I'm finally writing. The prior drivers know very well that from the factory the “VAZ Gates KIT timing kit with two (plastic) rollers and, accordingly, a (Quality) belt” is installed on the Priora. Therefore, everything that I will describe below is my purely objective opinion of this or that brand. And since the eternal timing problem on the Priora was haunting me, I decided to replace this timing belt with a “Marel KIT Magnum timing kit with a reinforced belt from Contitech and two (iron) rollers. I changed the timing belt somewhere along the mileage, I don’t remember exactly, but it seems like 33,000tkm. I changed it because the deflection roller started whistling. At first I thought that the generator tension pulley was whistling, so I had to go to the store and buy it. I arrived home, everything worked well, I installed a new tensioner pulley for the generator in the garage and thought that everything would be OK, but no. The next morning the roller whistled again, it was already clear that it was not the generator tension pulley, but perhaps some kind of timing pulley. I had to remove the generator pulley and start the car without it, the whistle appeared again, I realized that it was a timing pulley and I would have to get into the timing belt. In short, I removed this plastic fastener that hides the timing rollers in order to get to this ill-fated timing belt, and I saw these two “Squishy” videos, well, the rollers, I thought. I went to the store again to buy a timing belt, not a fake, but an original, of course. It cost us 3,150 rubles back then.
When I arrived at the store, a familiar salesman advised me to take “Marel KIT Magnum”
It is immediately clear from the photographs that the quality of the factory Gates KIT rollers does not shine at all in comparison with the same Marel KIT Magnum rollers.
After purchasing this timing belt, I decided to go to some people I know for a service to have the timing belt changed because I simply didn’t want to bother with the replacement. We completed the procedure in about forty minutes. The Gates belt was not changed; it was in excellent condition. After installation I went home, to say of course the difference between the Gates KIT and Marel KIT Magnum did not notice at all, of course there is no difference, but there is one big positive BUT there is still “THIS IS THE QUALITY OF THE ROLLERS OF THE Marel KIT Magnum.” After replacing the timing belt rollers, I began to operate the car as it was before replacing rollers. When I drove 7,000 tkm on these rollers in the cold, when the temperature in the morning was already below zero, I noticed that the timing roller began to whistle. I had to climb into these videos with my own hands. Disassemble the timing belt to get to the rollers and begin their visual diagnostics. When I removed the rollers from the engine, I decided to fill each of them with grease. When I removed the boots on the rollers, there was frankly very little lubrication. To put it simply, it was not there at all; the bearings were running almost dry. In general, I put LOCTITE in the bearing for the first time so that the car would run, it was better than driving without lubrication. Of course, before driving, I washed both rollers. When I did all the work and put these rollers in place and started the car, the rustling noise that the rollers had before lubrication disappeared. It feels like the rollers are working much easier than before they were lubricated. Of course, I wanted to lubricate the whole thing with LIQUI MOLY MEHRZWECKFETT BEARING LUBRICANT, but alas, I couldn’t find such a lubricant in stores. I had to be content with what was at hand. After lubricating the timing rollers, I forgot about it. I didn't change the belt; it was too good. Now I have in stock a belt from a very well-known and quite high-quality company for its products. If, again, this is not “Palenka” but a quality product from this company. I also decided to take apart the Gates videos and see how they were doing. The videos were already in the garage. So there was no lubrication just like on the Marel rollers. There was also very little of it. In general, I now clearly understand that before installing the rollers on the machine, you need to fill them with lubricant if you want them to run much better than they can run without lubrication. But for myself, now I’ve definitely decided to continue buying “Marel KIT Magnum”
How to tension a roller
After replacement or dismantling and subsequent return to place, the roller must be adjusted for proper operation of the drive mechanism. To work you will need tools:
- Size key
- Special key for tightening. It is a structure welded to the base in the form of a pair of rods with a gap of 18 mm between them (similar to a key for an angle grinder). The rods are designed for insertion into technological holes on the roller.
How should the belt be tensioned?
- The eccentric roller retaining bolt must be loosened.
- Clamp the roller cage and turn the part counterclockwise or clockwise with the adjuster key, increasing/decreasing the belt tension. At the longest section between the pulleys and the shaft, it should bend by about 6 mm.
When the desired result is achieved, the fastening is finally tightened.
How to change the generator roller on a Priora
The part cannot be repaired, only lubricated if its technical condition allows. If there is a malfunction, the spare part is replaced. Let's look at how to change the roller of a Priora generator with air conditioning.
To replace the Priora generator roller, you need a 17 mm wrench and a tension wrench.
Progress
There is almost nothing to disassemble:
- Unscrew the fixing bolt.
- Remove the old part (you should remove it carefully, making sure that the belt does not slip off, and holding it with your other hand).
- Install new one.
- Make sure that the belt fits into the grooves of all rollers and pulleys.
- Tighten the bolt, but do not tighten it completely.
- Adjust the tensioner.
- Tighten the bolt.
- Check tension.
Gates belts for Priora
When entering a car store, the owner of a Priora with a 16-valve engine inevitably faces the question of which timing belt is best to choose. Among the large number of spare parts, many owners prefer GATES products.
In 2022, it celebrated the centenary anniversary of the start of V-belt production. Our research and development center allows us to produce high quality spare parts.
- By adding nitrile to the product material, which is a synthetic substance endowed with increased wear resistance.
- The presence of fiberglass threads in the cord. They are arranged in a spiral in a rubber shell.
- The products are manufactured with different tooth profiles, which ensures the girth of the pulleys and reduces noise when the motor is running.
- The company's employees regularly take measures to protect their products from counterfeiting.
The company can offer buyers the following options for purchasing spare parts:
- parts with normal quality;
- reinforced spare parts;
- The set will include rollers;
- extended kit (seals, gaskets, washers, bolts).
Reviews
Stepan. Novosibirsk city. I had a choice from several companies producing belts. A friend advised me to choose GATES. I made the purchase from an auto store with good reviews from customers. The product is packaged in original packaging; counterfeit products were not found in the store. It was changed by specialists at a car service center, the mileage after replacement is already more than 30 thousand km, there are no comments.
Vladimir. Tver. The Priora's speedometer had more than 50 thousand kilometers when it decided to replace the timing belt. The old one still had clear markings from the gates company, so I decided to opt for this manufacturer. I did the replacement myself. At the same time I changed the pump and rollers. There are no complaints about the operation of the timing belt.
Alexander. Leningrad region. After my neighbor’s garage belt broke and bent the valves, I paid attention to the condition of the timing mechanism parts of my own car. I took the Priora by hand, so I didn’t know the exact mileage of the belt. The old belt was still normal. I took a kit from GATES, it has been working for the second year without problems.
How to check the generator roller
After diagnostics with removal, lubrication, replacement or adjustment, the roller must be checked. After completing the adjustment, check the tension according to the diagram:
- manual control by pressure - a correctly tensioned belt should not bend by more than 0.8 cm;
- start the engine;
- turn on all possible energy consumers - air conditioning, heating, high beams.
If all components are working properly and there is no extraneous noise coming from the generator, the setup is correct. If there is a whistling sound, the belt is most likely under-tensioned, and if the bearings are humming, it is likely to be too tight. The procedure should be repeated more carefully, controlling the tension. Normally, the belt should bend by 0.6-0.8 cm when pressed.
Alternative manufacturers
Not all vehicle owners can choose the right spare part for their car. This is due to the wide variety of products, including timing belts. The main supplier of rubber products for VAZ cars is the RTI plant in Balakovo. In addition to this, sellers can offer buyers Bosch products, which have high quality workmanship and reliability. Also on display you can see products from the companies Daiko, Kontitek, Lynx. Their cost ranges from 700 to 1500 rubles.
