How to replace a VAZ 2110 timing belt and tension roller at home

Replacing the VAZ 2110 timing belt and tension pulley with your own hands

The timing belt is an element of the gas distribution mechanism responsible for the intake of the fuel-air mixture and the subsequent release of exhaust gases. If the timing belt breaks, the valves and pistons will be damaged, which will require a complete replacement of the piston group or replacement of the cylinder head.

What is a timing belt?

The timing belt is a rubber-metal belt with teeth or a metal chain. On the first, the teeth are on the inside, tightly engaging with the camshaft gear of the crankshaft. They provide synchronization for the full operation of the vehicle engine.

We change the belt ourselves (on the 8 valve model)

Replacing the VAZ 2114 timing belt is strictly regulated in the car's operating instructions. It is recommended to change this part after 30-45 km. But you can’t rely only on recommendations; over time, without running the required kilometers, it slips off the gears, eats, bursts, and may even rupture.

For a car with a 1.5-liter 8-valve engine installed on it, a belt break will not have serious consequences: the car will simply stop and will not start. And in a 1.3 liter engine, the valves may become damaged, which will lead to breakdown of the entire engine. If an injector is installed on the VAZ2114, then when the belt slips, eats or breaks, the dashboard will display: “headlight sensor error.” Solve the question after how many km. This part should be changed after a visual inspection and a replacement should be made if it is in poor condition. Which strap is better to choose is written in the manual for the VAZ 2114.

Required Tools

To carry out the replacement yourself, you need to prepare new spare parts and tools:

  • a set of keys;
  • new timing belt;
  • new tension roller.

Stages of work

The DIY replacement sequence consists of the following steps:

  1. The car must be set to the handbrake.
  2. Set to 4th or 5th gear.
  3. After unscrewing the three bolts, remove the cover that protects the camshaft drive.
  4. Next, you need to loosen the generator drive belt and remove it from the crankshaft along with the pulley, leaving the bolt that holds it in place.
  5. Now the car should be put into neutral gear.
  6. The next step is to take care of the marks. To do this, rotate the crankshaft in a clockwise direction, observing the marks and the flywheel. The shaft should be rotated until the mark is parallel to the middle division of the scale.
  7. After making sure that the mark on the pulley is opposite the mark on the protective cover, you need to slightly loosen the fastening nut on the tension roller. If necessary, change the tension roller.
  8. Using a roller, you need to loosen the tension of the strap to remove it.
  9. Next, you need to install a new product on the crankshaft timing pulley.
  10. Then you need to pull the leading branch of the product onto the camshaft pulley so that it does not sag.
  11. Then turn the crankshaft 1.5-2 turns and set the marks. If the marks do not match, the belt should be removed and the installation procedure repeated again.
  12. After setting the marks, you need to unscrew the bolt on the crankshaft and put the generator pulley in place, securing it with the bolt.
  13. By turning the tension roller counterclockwise, it is necessary to adjust the timing belt tension and put on the alternator belt.

Why you should change the timing belt yourself: you will save time and money, you will know what to do if it slips or eats.

How to replace the timing belt of a VAZ 2110 with your own hands

There are 2 rollers under the camshaft pulleys: on the right is a support roller “9”, and on the left is a tension roller “4”. The first has a hole with which the roller is attached. It is visually noticeable that it is slightly offset from the center; this helps to regulate the tension of the timing belt by turning the roller on the axis of the mounting bolt.

The synchronization disk “8”, attached to the pulley “7” of the intake camshaft, allows for the operation of the phase sensor. And the drive front and rear are covered with a plastic cover.

To set the valve timing, special marks are used, marked with the letters “A”, “D”, “E”. They are on:

  • a cover covering the oil pump;
  • pulleys (B);
  • rear cover of the drive belt (marks “C” and “F”).

If the phases are adjusted correctly, mark “A” should coincide with “B”, “D” with “E”, “C” with “F”.

Checking and adjusting the tension of the timing belt.

If you want your belt to last long and trouble-free, it is important to maintain its tension in the correct position. To do this, periodically test the tension. Pay special attention to the first tension of the new belt. If the belt is loose, the lateral load on the teeth increases, which greatly accelerates their wear. In some cases, if the belt is very loose, there is a high probability of the belt teeth moving relative to the pulleys. This can lead, at best, to engine instability and loss of power. In the worst case, it will lead to expensive repairs. To check the tension, perform the following steps:

1. Unscrew the 5 bolts securing the protective timing cover and move the cover to the side.

2. Press the timing belt exactly in the center between the camshaft pulleys with a force of 100 Newtons (10 kgf). The belt deflection from the horizontal position should be no more than 7 millimeters. Modern tension rollers are also provided with a tension control mechanism. To check the quality of the tension, make sure that mark A on the outer part of the roller coincides with protrusion B.3. To adjust the tension, slightly unscrew the roller mounting bolt and, by rotating the roller, achieve complete alignment of the marks described above (see figure)

Signs by which you can determine the need to replace the VAZ 2110 timing belt

To replace the timing belt on time, you need to monitor the condition of the engine. The timing belt needs to be replaced if:

  1. there are oil leaks on it;
  2. there are many cracks and signs of increased wear on its surface;
  3. timing belt teeth are damaged;
  4. the belt has delaminated, cuts, bulges or folds have appeared;
  5. threads appeared on the surface.

Causes of belt breakage

One of the common problems with the model is the failure of the timing belt. The reasons for this may be different:

  • Simple wear and tear caused by a long period of use of the vehicle;
  • Regular increased loads under which the engine has to work intensively;
  • Mechanical damage as a result of improper operation or received during the repair of other components;
  • Manufacturing defect.

Regardless of the causes of the problem, it must be eliminated. Over time, it stretches so much that the gear teeth jump by 1-2 links. This disrupts the valve timing and causes interruptions in engine operation. But this is the best-case scenario for such a situation. The worst is when the strap breaks and the valves bend.

Timing belt replacement algorithm

  1. Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery.
  2. Remove the generator drive belt.
  3. Then we install the piston of the first cylinder in the position where the top dead center is located.
  4. Using a 15mm wrench, unscrew the bolt that secures the tension roller. After this, turn the roller a little, then the timing belt tension will decrease.
  5. Straighten the belt from the camshaft pulleys, then from the tension roller, as well as from the water pump timing pulley. Then remove it completely.

7

  1. Fix the crankshaft and unscrew the bolt that secures the generator drive. Usually, for these actions you need an assistant who will fix the crankshaft by holding the flywheel ring teeth with a mounting tool. At the same time, you need to remove the clutch housing plug and unscrew the pulley mounting bolt.

Step-by-step instructions for replacing the roller

The work of replacing the timing roller on a VAZ begins with dismantling the old mechanism. To simplify the task, you can use schematic images that indicate the location of the main components.

After reading the diagrams, you need to slightly unscrew the nut holding the roller (it is indicated by the blue arrow in the previous image). Behind it is a washer, which is important not to lose when turning it out. It is enough to slightly turn the roller by hand and loosen the belt. The mechanism itself is presented in the form of an oval structure, which is responsible for adjusting the tension of the belt drive.

After completing these steps, you must remove the belt from the camshaft, taking special care. It also needs to be released from the video itself. To completely remove the belt, you will need to unscrew the bolt holding the generator pulley.

At the next stage, after successfully dismantling the belt, you need to completely unscrew the nut holding the tension roller and the washer that is located behind it. Further along the shaft, remove the roller itself and check its bearing. This is done by rotating the outer part of the roller (it should not jam, play, make squeaks or other extraneous sounds). Make sure that there are no defects and that no grease is leaking from the bearing. Otherwise, the substance will contaminate the roller.

Note!

After removing the old roller, look at the spacer ring installed behind it and check it for defects. If the part is in good condition, not crimped or deformed, there is no point in buying a new ring, because you can put the previous product in place.

Installing the timing belt VAZ 2110

Reassemble in reverse order.

  1. There is a special recess for installing the generator drive pulley.

11

  1. When installing the belt, it is necessary to monitor the tension of the leading branch.

12

13

  1. Tension the belt using a special wrench with two protrusions at the ends.

3

  1. Place the key in the hole on the outside of the tension roller. Turn it from left to right until the cutout on the outer disk coincides with the protrusion (it has a rectangular shape) of the inner bushing of the tension roller.
  2. Using a 15mm wrench, tighten the tension roller mounting bolt.
  3. If the timing belt makes noise after the timing belt is installed, this most likely indicates that the tension pulley bearing is faulty or is about to fail.
  4. Remove the rollers. Rotate them to make sure that there is no play or jamming.
  5. If there are any irregularities in the operation of the tension roller, it should be replaced.

Installation of a new video

You need to install a new part on VAZ cars in the reverse order to its original place. In addition, installation must be carried out in such a way that the two existing holes are directed outward and not inward.

At all stages of installation, you need to monitor the marks and prevent them from moving. All that remains is to check the tightness of the roller fastening and adjust the tension of the belt drive.

To test the correctness of the actions, you should start the car and evaluate the quality of work. If a large branch wobbles even at low speeds, it is necessary to increase the tension. Any noise and hum should be excluded. If they are present, the tension must be loosened.
