7 ways to check the functionality of the thermostat without removing it from the car

The thermostat on a VAZ 2107 car is a mechanism by which the coolant temperature is maintained within certain limits. If the thermostat on a VAZ 2107 fails, this leads to increased fuel consumption, reduced engine life, or even jamming. At the slightest sign of malfunction, it will need to be replaced with a VAZ 2107. In the material, we will consider in detail what this device is, why it is needed, and how to replace it.

Purpose of the device

The thermostat is located between the large and small circles of the engine cooling system. Structurally, the product has the form of a housing, inside of which there is a valve with a temperature-sensitive element. This valve switches the coolant flow in a small or large circle.

The coolant flow regulator is connected through pipes to the pump, engine and cooling radiator. At the moment the engine starts, when the antifreeze has not yet warmed up, the thermostat, or rather its valve, is in closed mode. The coolant circulates through a pump and passes only through the cylinder block. The liquid that is in the radiator does not take part in the cooling process of the engine, but until it heats up to 80-90 degrees.

It is important to know! The thermostat valve on the VAZ 2107 opens completely when the coolant temperature reaches 84-86 degrees.

When the set temperature is reached, the thermostat locking disc moves. As a result of the valve opening, liquid begins to circulate in a large circle, passing through the radiator. When fluid circulates through the radiator, the cooling efficiency of the engine increases. As soon as the temperature of the liquid decreases, the valve closes and circulation occurs in a small circle.

The coolant temperature indicators are affected by the following indicators:

  • motor operating mode;
  • movement speed;
  • outside air temperature.

The thermostat maintains the coolant in a certain temperature range. This, in turn, affects the functioning of the motor, for which constant temperature indicators are important. In terms of design, all types of thermostats on the VAZ-2107 are practically no different. Structurally, they are a housing with a thermal valve located inside. The design of the device has three holes that serve to connect hoses from the cooling system.

Malfunctions and methods for identifying them

Such a simple mechanism as a thermostat has only three causes of possible malfunctions:

  1. The valve does not close, as a result of which the liquid constantly circulates in a small circle without passing through the radiator.
  2. The valve does not open completely, which reduces the cooling efficiency of the motor.
  3. The valve does not close. In this case, the antifreeze passes in a large circle through the radiator. This has a negative impact on the engine, as it does not reach the required operating temperature.

Before replacing a product, you need to make sure it is not working. Let's find out in more detail how to check the thermostat of a VAZ 2107. You can determine one of the above malfunctions in the following ways:

  • If the valve is jammed and does not close, then after starting the engine you need to check whether the lower part of the radiator immediately heats up or not. If it happens right away, this indicates that the device is faulty.
  • If the device is jammed and does not open, then the engine temperature will rise, which can lead to costly repairs.
  • Valve wedging can be detected by the fact that the motor does not reach sufficient temperature for a long time.

Such procedures can be performed at home. You can buy a new thermostat and install it in place of the old one, thereby checking its performance.

Another reason for product failure is water poured into the system. If the water is frozen in the system, it is prohibited to start the engine.

Features of replacing the thermostat

To replace the thermostat on a VAZ 2107, or it is also called a thermostat, you will need to use a screwdriver. The replacement principle is as follows:

  • Wait for the engine to cool down.
  • Drain antifreeze from the system.
  • Initially, use a wrench or screwdriver to loosen the fastening of the clamp connected to the radiator. Disconnect the hose. Loosen and disconnect the fastenings of the two remaining hoses (from the cylinder block and pump).
  • Dismantle the device along with the hoses.
  • Replace the product along with the hoses if necessary. If the hoses have obvious defects, it is recommended to replace them immediately.
  • Put on new hoses, then install the thermostat in place and tighten the clamps well.
  • Now you can fill the system up to the mark and close the radiator cap. After starting the engine, the fluid level will drop, so you will need to add antifreeze.

Finally, you need to check the quality of operation of the device.

Which thermostat to install and how to modify it

What is the best thermostat to install on a VAZ 2107? Under the “seven” you can install a thermostat from a VAZ 2110 car, which is practically no different. But there is still a difference: such a sensor allows the coolant temperature to rise to 95 degrees. Sellers advise: “Install a temperature regulator from “ten”, and you won’t have any problems!”

Modification of the thermostat is necessary if in winter, after turning on the interior heater, the coolant temperature drops to 60-70 degrees. This means that the engine will operate abnormally. It is possible to fix the problem, but this will require modification of the device. You can find out what a thermostat upgrade is in the video below:

After we finalize the thermostat, we will need to check and configure it.

A manual for the car owner: the principle of operation of the cooling device in the car, diagram for VAZ 2107 (Zhiguli), 2114 (Lada Samara) and 2115. How to check its operation, video.

This is a device that allows you to maintain a constant engine temperature due to the operation of thermostats or due to a phase transition. Sometimes you can see thermostats with thermal insulation, which can reduce heat or cold loss. The most common one, used by everyone, young and old, is the refrigerator.

The thermostat performs the function of blocking the radiator from the flow of coolant (antifreeze), actually giving the engine time to warm up. Also, such a simple mechanism helps reduce wear on the car engine. It is closed while the engine temperature is normal, as soon as it reaches a critical point within ninety or ninety-five degrees Celsius, the damper in the thermostat opens and allows coolant to enter the engine and normalize its temperature.

You can also observe the operation of the device at home. You just need to place the thermostat in a container filled with ordinary water and put it on the stove to heat up. As the temperature of the water in the pan increases, you will be able to see the valve on the thermostat open by about two centimeters. To conduct the experiment, it is better to take a new one, and not remove it from your own or someone else’s car.

How to correctly determine that the device is in working condition?

We warm up the engine to such a temperature that the needle does not reach the critical value, and turn it off. We open the hood, find a hose on top of the radiator (a black rubber hose with a metal clamp at the end) and the same one on the bottom. Then, very carefully, they may be quite hot, touch them. If one of them becomes hot, and the other is still cold, and the sensor shows a high engine temperature, this means that most likely the liquid does not enter the engine, but is retained in the radiator, and you need to change the thermostat to a new one.

There is another way of checking, better known as “folk”. It echoes the “experiment” that was described above, to observe the process of the thermostat, only this time you will have to put the thermostat, the functionality of which you doubt, removed from your car, into a container with water, and then the procedure is repeated as Once the water reaches a temperature of 87–90 degrees, the valve should open, however, if this does not happen, then the thermostat is no longer suitable for operation. It is also worth remembering that different thermostats may have different critical valve opening temperatures, so when purchasing a new one, check this with the seller. Since it is no secret to the driver that it is impossible to install a thermostat in a car that has a high valve opening temperature - the engine will not cool.

Video, checking the thermostat VAZ 2101-2107 and Tama (Toyota):

This device is, indeed, not an expensive part, and its cost depends on the brand of your car. The price of a thermostat for VAZ 2101, 2108, 2110 and 2121 is approximately 230 rubles. A thermostat in a housing will cost approximately 400–550 rubles or more, but for a Lada Granta 8V car you can buy it for 1,200 rubles. For foreign cars - on average from 550 to several thousand rubles. The most common, popular and high-quality thermostats are GATES and WAHLER brands. There are also positive reviews about the manufacturer Vernet.

A thermostat is a device that regulates the temperature of the fluid in the engine cooling system. In its standard version, it is 5 cm in diameter and is located between the engine and the radiator. The operation of the thermostat allows you to maintain a constant temperature of the motor due to thermostats or due to the implementation of a phase transition.

The device blocks the radiator from coolant, thereby allowing the engine to warm up. In addition, this inherently simple mechanism reduces wear on the car engine. The device is closed if the engine temperature is normal, but as soon as it reaches a critical level of 90-95 ° C, the damper in the thermostat opens, which allows coolant to enter the engine.

Ways to check the functionality of the thermostat

The safest way to determine if the engine cooling control element is faulty is to remove it and then immerse it in liquid. This is done as follows:

  1. Remove the thermostat and pull out the cooler start element from it.
  2. Fill a small container with fairly hot water (for the purity of the experiment, it is best to have a thermometer suitable for measuring water temperature on hand). The temperature in the container should be 75 degrees.
  3. Keep the thermometer in the water along with the thermostat and gradually increase the temperature of the liquid to 90 degrees.
  4. As the water temperature increases, the rod should extend from the trigger element. Replacing the front brake pads of a VAZ 2115 yourself. The article provides detailed video instructions and advice from professionals. If this does not happen, then you will have to replace the thermostat.

You should not leave the thermostat in place if you find on its body:

If you have not previously encountered dismantling a thermostat, then you can check its performance in another way. To do this, in the morning (the car engine must be well cooled), start the car and touch the radiator pipe. If the thermostat is working properly, it heats up; if this does not happen, replace the part.

How does a thermostat work in a car?

The main materials used to make these devices are brass and copper.
The way the thermostat works in a car is hidden by a small cylinder that you can see from the engine side. It contains a ball of artificial wax, the melting point of which is 82°C. This material was not chosen by chance - it is capable of increasing in volume (transitioning from solid to liquid) under the influence of heat. The pin of the device is connected to the valve and pressed into the wax cylinder. When the wax melts, it creates pressure that causes the pin to fall out of the cylinder and open the valve. When open, it allows coolant to flow into the radiator. When the engine temperature returns to normal, the wax takes its original shape - it hardens. There are many reasons that can cause problems with this device, but the most common is corrosion.

If the valve of the device is constantly open, the cooling liquid will constantly pass through the radiator before entering the engine. Under such conditions, the motor will take much longer to reach operating temperature.

If the valve, on the contrary, is constantly closed, then the engine will begin to gain temperature without the necessary cooling, and the car will simply “boil.” It is impossible to continue further movement on such a vehicle.

Refinement of a budget car

You can install a thermostat from Granta to Priora. To do this, you will need to buy pipes, a gasket, a tee, a temperature sensor, studs, and antifreeze. Since the Granta, unlike the Priora, has a radiator located further from the engine, a long pipe will be required for tuning.

You can splice standard pipes. To do this, use the SOD pump pipe from the “ten”. A straight section with fasteners is cut off from it. Experts attribute the advantages of such tuning to the rapid warming up of the interior and engine; the operating temperature of the internal combustion engine fluctuates within 92°C.

In order to correctly modify the ODS on the VAZ 2110 and Priora, it is recommended to use a book on the operation of these vehicles.

If necessary, it is recommended to consult with auto mechanics.

The price of such a device is really not high. The cost of the device for a VAZ 2106, 2109, 2110 and 2121 car is approximately 400-500 rubles. For foreign cars - from 500 rubles to several thousand. The Gates and Wahler brands have proven themselves well.

We hope that our article helped you understand how a thermostat works in a car (a video can clearly show this process).

The VAZ 2107 thermostat is a device that maintains the coolant temperature within specified limits. Operating a car with a faulty thermostat leads to increased fuel consumption, reduced service life, and even engine failure. Therefore, the thermostat must be replaced immediately at the slightest sign of malfunction.

Consequences of using a faulty thermostat

You cannot continue driving with a faulty thermostat. The engine will not warm up properly, and the flow of antifreeze will normally flow in large and small circles. This can cause a number of serious problems:

  • overheating of the internal combustion engine with all the consequences;
  • underheating of the engine, which will lead to worse fuel combustion and increased consumption, and the oil will grow a beard on the valves;
  • antifreeze boiling in the expansion tank;
  • failure of the entire cooling system, etc.

“One winter this happened to me. I’m driving home from a business trip, about 50 kilometers behind me. The track is flat, there is no snow, I move at a speed of 100-120 km/h. Well, I think why should it heat up, fifth gear, the fan cools it, that’s all. Suddenly I looked at the antifreeze reading arrow - below 40. This shouldn’t happen. It’s good that I stopped by the car service on time. The guys quickly determined the thermostat was faulty and replaced it with the original one. I also talked with the mechanics - they said that the open valve position is not so destructive for the engine, but fuel consumption increases and the valves become dirty. You’re lucky, they say it’s not stuck in the closed position, then the motor would have overheated and knocked.” Misha Kim, driver, Andreevsk.

Purpose of the thermostat VAZ 2107 injector

The thermostat is installed at the intersection of the large and small engine cooling circles. It is a temperature-sensitive valve that switches the flow of coolant along a small circuit (through the cylinder block) or a large circuit (through the cooling radiator, depending on its temperature. The thermostat is connected to the pipes from the pump, engine and radiator. When the engine and, accordingly, the cooling the liquid is not warmed up, the thermostat is in the closed state. In this position, antifreeze from the water pump is directed to the cylinder block, bypassing the cooling radiator, and the liquid in the radiator does not participate in the cooling process. After the coolant has warmed up to 80-90 degrees, the temperature-sensitive element enlarges, displacing the valve's shut-off plate. At the same time, some of the antifreeze begins to circulate in a large circuit, passing through the radiator. As the temperature rises, the thermostat valve opens more and more, directing more antifreeze through the radiator, which improves cooling efficiency. As the engine cools, the reverse process occurs, antifreeze begins to circulate along a small circuit.

Depending on the operating mode of the engine, air temperature and speed (intensity of air flow to the engine and radiator), the coolant temperature fluctuates, and accordingly, the opening value of the thermostat valve changes. Due to this, the optimal operating temperature of the engine is maintained.

VAZ 2107 thermostats do not differ in design, regardless of engine type, and are a non-separable cylindrical body with a thermal valve inside. The housing is equipped with three pipes for connecting the cooling system hoses.

Thermostat malfunctions and their identification

The VAZ 2107 thermostat (injector) is a simple device, so it has only 3 possible faults:

  1. It does not open, constantly passing antifreeze through the small circuit. The engine does not cool down.
  2. It opens only partially, which reduces engine cooling efficiency.
  3. It does not close, constantly passing antifreeze through a large circuit (through the radiator). In this case, the engine does not warm up to the optimal operating temperature.

To check the functionality of the thermostat, you should check at what temperature of the antifreeze the valve begins to open. It is also necessary to check the maximum valve stroke. Given the non-separable and opaque body, it is impossible to fully test the thermostat without a special stand. But it is quite possible to carry out a simple test of functionality simply by touch.

If the thermostat is working properly, the tank at the bottom of the radiator does not warm up immediately after starting the engine, but after the temperature gauge shows 80–85 degrees (the instrument needle stops 4 mm from the red zone of the instrument scale).

If the lower tank starts to heat up immediately, this indicates that the thermostat is not closing. If even after warming up the antifreeze the lower reservoir remains cold, the thermostat jams (does not open).

Insufficient valve hot-pot can be determined by the fact that the engine is overheating (the latter, however, may have other reasons).

If there is any malfunction of the thermostat, it must be replaced.

Replacing the thermostat VAZ 2107

The work of replacing a thermostat does not require high qualifications and expensive tools (devices). All you need is a slotted and Phillips screwdriver or an 8mm socket wrench to loosen and tighten the clamps holding the coolant hoses. The procedure is as follows:

Let's check the functionality of the thermostat of the carburetor engine cooling system of VAZ 2105, 2107, 2108, 2109, 21099 cars. To check the thermostat and evaluate the correctness of its operation, you need to know its role in the car's cooling system and the principle of operation. The thermostat separates two circles of the cooling system (small and large) and has two valves: bypass and main. While the engine is warming up, coolant circulates through the small circle and the open thermostat bypass valve. The thermostat prevents it from mixing with the liquid from the large circle and thereby helps the engine warm up quickly.

As it warms up (coolant temperature is about 87º - 2108, 2109 and 80-85º - 2105, 2107), the bypass valve closes, and the main one opens, and the liquid flows into a large circle. At a temperature of 102º (94º for VAZ 2105, 2107), the main thermostat valve is fully open, and the additional one is closed. Circulation occurs through a large circle, providing the required temperature conditions for normal engine operation.

Therefore, the simplest way to check the functionality of the thermostat is by touch, directly on the car. When operating correctly, its upper part warms up first, and then the lower part.

The procedure for checking the thermostat on VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099 cars without removing it from the engine

When the engine warms up, circulation occurs in a small circle. Warms up: cylinder block, cylinder head, carburetor heating block, stove, upper part of the thermostat. We check the heating of the thermostat with our hands: its upper part should be warm, and after a few minutes it becomes hot. The bottom of the thermostat remains cold. In addition, the lower hose to the radiator will also be cold, and the upper one will be slightly heated.

After some time, the lower part of the thermostat and the lower radiator hose suddenly become hot - this opens the main thermostat valve. Circulation went through the radiator (large circle).

The procedure for checking the thermostat on VAZ 2105, 2107 cars without removing it from the engine

The check is similar to the check on VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099, only when circulating in a small circle, the following elements of the cooling system warm up: the cylinder head tee, the upper hose to the radiator, the upper radiator tank, the heater. The lower part of the radiator and its lower hose remain cold. After the thermostat operates at a temperature of 80-85º (the coolant temperature gauge needle is 3-4 mm from the red zone), the lower part of the thermostat and the lower radiator tank warm up.

Preparing for replacement

In order for the car to be completely ready to replace the thermostat, you need to wait until the engine cools down to at least 40-50 degrees. It is extremely dangerous to work while it is hot; you can get burned. It is performed quite quickly on the VAZ-2109; the most difficult and tedious procedure is emptying the system. To do this, you need to use two drain holes, which are located in the lower part of the radiator (the plug is unscrewed by hand) and in the engine block (head bolt 13).

But what should you do if the system is filled with antifreeze, which is quite expensive? We must try to preserve it so that it is not expensive to repair the car. To do this, first of all, by opening the stove tap, unscrew the clamp on the pipe that goes to the throttle valve. It is necessary to drain the maximum possible amount of antifreeze through it. Yes, this procedure is slow, but it will save almost all the liquid. Only after this can you unscrew the plug on the radiator and on the engine block. And don’t forget to unscrew the cap on the expansion tank to increase the pressure.

Features of the Grants thermostat

The factory installed thermostats on 14-series cars that were more similar in design and operating principle to those used on 9-series and 10-series cars. These are pump thermostats that operate only when the temperature reaches +90..95 degrees.

The main feature of the Granta thermostat is that it can be installed on a VAZ-2114 without major design changes. But engine performance will be much better, cooling efficiency will be higher. The thermostat's response temperature is approximately 60 degrees, which allows for normal movement in any traffic jams. Even standing for many hours in heavy traffic with the engine running will not cause the antifreeze to boil.

  1. Wait until the engine cools down.
  2. Drain the antifreeze.
  3. Loosen the clamp on the radiator pipe going to the thermostat. Disconnect the hose.
  4. Loosen the clamps and disconnect the hoses from the cylinder block and pump pipes going to the radiator, and disconnect the hoses.
  5. Remove the thermostat from the car along with the three hoses attached to it.
  6. Loosen the thermostat hose clamps and remove them.
  7. If the thermostat has band clamps, replace them with worm clamps.
  8. Install the hoses on the new thermostat and put on the clamps without tightening them.
  9. Install a new thermostat on the car, put hoses and clamps on the corresponding pipes.
  10. Tighten the clamps
  11. Fill with coolant.
  12. Start the engine, make sure there are no antifreeze leaks and that the new thermostat is working.

Installing a New Thermostat

Before installing a working device, it is necessary to clean its location from dirt and rust. Apply a thin, even layer of any neutral sealant to the degreased surface. You should wait at least 10 minutes for it to dry slightly. After this, a new node is installed.

In the end, all that remains is to pour the required amount of coolant into the system, making sure that no air pockets form.

To make sure that everything is functioning normally, you need to start the power plant and inspect all connections for leaks. If detected, the latter are eliminated by tightening the fastening clamps.

In the vast majority of cases, after replacing the old thermostat, all unpleasant symptoms disappear for a long time.
