MD tuning stands for throttle modernization. There are quite a few ways to modify the throttle assembly, but this article will discuss the most popular scheme proposed by the American engineer Ron Hutton. According to him, correct MD tuning can increase engine power and reduce fuel consumption by up to 25%.

MD throttle tuning, myth or not?

It is believed that the inventor of MD (Modern Throttle) tuning is the American engineer Ron Hutton. According to him, this modification of the throttle assembly allows you to change the state of the air flow (create turbulence), which allows you to increase engine power and reduce fuel consumption by up to 25%. Is it really?

How to make MD throttle tuning with your own hands

Great accuracy does not play a role here.
The cutting depth should depend on the wall thickness, usually 2-3 mm (no more than 5 mm). To remove any burrs that have formed, you can use fine sandpaper. The process is not complicated and does not require ECU firmware. How to do MD tuning is shown in the video (watch from 8 min 46 sec):

If the tool is powerful enough, the work will not take more than 15 minutes. At service stations they charge from 7,000 rubles for such tuning of the throttle valve.

Reviews about MD tuning

After such modernization of the throttle assembly:

  • + The gas pedal becomes more informative (more responsive).
  • + Increase in power from 1000 to 3000 rpm.
  • + Reduced fuel consumption.
  • ─ Loss of elasticity.

To find out whether there is an effect from MD tuning, an experiment was carried out (look at the video above from 12 minutes 30 seconds):

  1. The car's tank was filled to maximum.
  2. We drove about 20 km by car.
  3. We filled the tank to the maximum (consumption was 2.01 liters).
  4. A modernized throttle assembly (diameter 46 mm) was installed.
  5. We drove the car along the same section of the road.
  6. We filled the tank to the maximum (gasoline consumption was 1.61 liters).

Thus, fuel savings amounted to about 20%. In addition, an increase in low-end power was noted.

If, after upgrading the throttle assembly, problems with idle speed appeared, then most likely the tightness of the closed throttle valve was broken (too large recesses were made).

What reviews can you leave about MD tuning?

MD tuning throttle body Chery Tiggo

1) The throttle is a thing that shuts off the air supply to the intake manifold, from 0% (if you do not take into account the XX valve) to 100%.
2) By increasing the throttle, we cannot change the lower “bar”; you won’t go below 0%; if you do a little more, you won’t reach XX. Total: in the extreme position the throttle should completely shut off the air supply. 3) But by increasing the throttle cross-section, we change the “upper bar”, which means the maximum possible air passage increases. Compared to the “standard” throttle, the maximum air flow is more than 100%. But the air does not fly into the black hole, but replaces the air in the manifold, which the cylinders pulled into themselves. But the cylinders can only absorb a fairly limited amount of air. This means that improved air flow through the throttle valve simply reduces the vacuum in the intake manifold, thereby reducing suction losses. But the suction losses with the throttle fully open are not so great. So increasing the throttle by 5% in no way indicates a 5% increase in power. 4) If we also add exhaust resistance, etc., then everything will turn out very complicated. But we can say for sure that MD tuning will be most harmoniously combined with a tuning exhaust system. In fact, it turns out that there should be no real “arrival” until the new damper is fully open. After all, the old one can provide a similar air flow! The only difference is how much the gas pedal is pressed; with the new throttle you only need to press it a little less. And in reality there is no increase when the throttle valve is partially opened! Only sensations. It turns out as if you press the gas pedal a little deeper with the old throttle. While the new damper provides air flow within the limits provided by the old damper, we can only talk about some kind of reconfiguration of the gas pedal (less pressure opens up more air access to the manifold). The real gain in reality is just that small difference that is felt when the throttle is fully opened. And the difference will be greater, the more air the engine requires, and this includes exhaust, and phases shifted to the “tops” and other modifications... In any case, the suction losses that the intake system provides are about 50% of the engine losses at idle . At idle, a warm engine consumes less than a liter of fuel per hour. But the modified throttle does not affect these losses, but only affects the losses when fully open, and they are much smaller... How often do you have the throttle open 100% (pedal to the floor), I think much less than 30% of the time you are driving, then This saving may appear, but it will amount to a value comparable to the measurement error.

So what's the bottom line? 1) MD tuning - tuning is quite real, and the more interesting it is the more modifications are made to the car; 2) At partial throttle opening angles there is no real “arrival”, only a sensation; 3) You should not count on a reduction in fuel consumption. If a reduction is obtained, this is the result of the fact that you feel more confident behind the wheel.

It feels like, a friend says, the throttle response at the bottom is noticeable, in terms of consumption (on gas). A friend went to a gas technician to reduce the gas supply, for the sake of experiment, by 10%. According to the traction has not changed According to km. it became less than a liter, it looks like there is some sense in this tuning. There is an exhaust growl at the bottom, “the growl is pleasant
