Button for electric windshield heating Lada Kalina

How does the heated rear window work?

It’s just that wires with a voltage of 12 volts go to the rear window. There are special tracks on the sides of the surface into which these wires are built. The tracks go vertically upward, this is, so to speak, the “main bus”, there are only two of them on the right and left, at the extreme points.

But from them come thin (2–3 mm) horizontal strips that heat the glass itself, clearing it of fog or snow in winter. They are the main working element of the entire structure.

Usually there are several dozen of them, approximately 20 - 40 in the working area, it all depends on the class of the car and the size of its rear window.

Of course, any electrical device is controlled by a fuse, which is designed for a certain voltage and amperage.

Doesn't work, what's the reason?

Actually, there are only two main reasons, and both of them lie in the power system:

  • Fuse. YES it can really burn out. This happens for various reasons, maybe it’s just a minor short circuit and that’s all. Thus, your heating will not work completely. You need to find the fuse and check it . This is the first and mandatory step.
  • If it is intact, then we need to check the voltage on the wires that go to the main “buses” (wide side strips). As a rule, they have ordinary metal contacts. We just take a multimeter and measure it, if there is voltage and it’s about 12 Volts, that means the power is suitable here, everything is fine.
  • The thin lines themselves. To be honest, they can’t all burn out at once. As a rule, from one to three, or at most four, “threads” burn out. Therefore, if part of your window comes off (from fogging or ice), but part does not. It is the non-working threads that need to be looked at.
  • Examine this thin strip and you will see the break point. This will be the burnt part, there may be a little black around it (although the thread is originally brown). Also, the thread will seem to open, this place needs to be connected in order to restore functionality.

On my own behalf, I would like to add that the fuse rarely lights up, mostly it is a break in the “threads” of the glass; they need to be restored.

DIY heating repair

I remember distant times when this was practically impossible! Now technology has come so far - you can buy a rear window repair kit just to restore these narrow strips. I suspect that there is some kind of metallized composition or paint - but it is called conductive glue.

This glue can withstand temperatures from – 60 to + 100 degrees Celsius. This is exactly what we need to buy. The only thing I want to tell you is - don’t take the cheapest composition, now in my opinion it’s about 150 - 200 rubles, take a little more expensive one, about 300 - 400 rubles, such compositions work much longer.

Device

Almost all stern window heater systems are identical and do not differ much from each other.

The entire system consists of several elements that ensure normal and safe operation of the heater:

  • heating threads (their number may vary depending on the device model);
  • electrical wires supplying current to the work area;
  • device safety relay;
  • power button equipped with a signal LED;
  • fuse.

The failure of one of the component elements of the heating device or a break in its electrical circuit may prompt the question of why the rear window heating does not work.

Diagram and marking of fuses and their replacement

If you turn over the cover of the Lada Kalina fuse box, you can see the markings and which fuse and relay are responsible for what. Also, it can be seen in the vehicle’s service and technical book.

Electrical wiring faults

After installing a new fuse element, you should check the operation of the heater, but when the situation has not changed, you need to diagnose the power supply wires. There is a high probability that they may break, break on the mount or burn out, and as a result, currents will not flow to the heating strips. You can check the condition of the wires as follows: initially switch the heating button to the “on” position, then use a tester to check the presence of voltage at both terminals connecting the wires to the heating tapes. Most often they are located on the sides of the glass or at its bottom. If there is no voltage on the wires, then perhaps this is the reason why the rear window heating does not work. What to do in this case? Trace the entire path of the wiring, which means there is a break. Clean the contacts of the connecting sections and terminals, since during prolonged operation they can simply oxidize and not allow voltage to pass through. If it is not possible to trace the wiring path and detect damage at home, you need to seek the help of an auto electrician.

Methods for restoring glass heating filaments

The most unpleasant thing is damage to the glass heating filaments. The difficulty of repair is that these stripes on the rear window cannot be replaced with new ones. But you can try to restore them. There are many ways to restore glass heater filaments, let's try to disassemble them. Stores sell special conductive pastes, varnishes and paints.

In principle, they are sold as repair kits for glass heating filaments. It is repaired as follows. Tape is glued to the sides of the torn thread. The most important thing is that the thread is visible.

And varnish or paste is applied to the damaged thread. Then you need to wait until it dries. Then the tape is removed and the glass heater is checked for functionality. There are also folk methods using metal shavings, but, probably, in our time, no one will bother.

Well, that’s all, we looked at how to turn on and off the heated rear window on a Lada Kalina car. Good luck to everyone on the roads. Bye everyone!!!

Controls

What to do if the rear window heating does not work, and the diagnostics showed that all elements of the system are working? Perhaps the reason for this could be the power button. When the heating is turned on, a light indicator on the button lights up, indicating the operation of the system. So, the toggle switch is in the “on” position, the indicator light is on, but no warm-up occurs. This indicates that the working contacts of the toggle switch are burnt out or worn out over time, and therefore no energy is supplied for heating. In case of this breakdown, you need to replace the button, since it is almost impossible to repair a damaged one.

How to turn the heated glass on and off on a Lada Kalina

The heated rear window button is indicated by a square inside with three arrows going up. To turn it on, press the button, remember that the ignition must be on. After turning on, the orange indicator lights up, which means that the threads have begun to heat up. Turn it off, press this button again and the indicator should go out. The heating will also turn off when the ignition is turned off.

Restoring Heated Strips

So, the rear window heating does not work, what to do and where to start the repair. The first thing you need to do is get a high-quality repair kit for restoring electrical filaments. You can purchase it at any auto store or car market at a very reasonable price, but not less than three hundred rubles. Kits that are too cheap have low quality materials and simply may not solve the problem.

How does heated glass work on Kalina?

The rear window heating device is very simple and the heating principle is elementary. The rear glass has threads through which current passes, and accordingly the threads heat up and warm the glass. During normal operation, the threads heat up to 70 degrees, and this is enough to freeze the glass and remove fogging.

Technological process of repair step by step

First, we determine where the chain breaks on the threads. Often these are easy to identify; they are visible to the naked eye. Usually this is mechanical damage in the form of scratches, abrasions and large torn parts.

Then we study the instructions for using the repair kit: methods for applying the conductive agent and the time until it completely dries. The next step is to prepare the surface of the damaged area for restoration. To do this, just wipe it with a rag soaked in an alcohol solution to remove dirt and degrease it.

After this, you should stick strips of adhesive tape on both sides of the thread in the area of \u200b\u200bthe break.

Imported cars

On imported cars, in addition to the standard heated rear window, rear view mirrors are also equipped with such a device. The principle of operation of such equipment is as follows. Including the heating of the stern glass, the mirrors are also heated at the same time.

Repair manual for VAZ 2110-2112, Lada Priora, Kalina

Rice. 10.11. Scheme for switching on the rear window heating element: 1 – mounting block; 2 – rear window heating element; 3 – rear window heating switch; 4 – ignition switch (lock); 5 – main fuse block; A – to the electrical package control unit, terminal “10”; B – to the lighting control module (device lighting control), terminal “58b”; C – to the “plus” terminal of the battery; K4 – additional relay (ignition relay); K2 – relay for turning on the heated rear window

The diagram of the rear window heating system is shown in Fig. 10.11.

The rear window heating element is switched on using relay K2 installed in the mounting block.

To prevent the battery from being discharged by a heating element left on when the engine is not running, the heating can only be turned on when the ignition is on. To do this, power is supplied to switch 3 through an additional relay (ignition relay) K4, which is activated when the ignition is turned on, and fuse F11. Power is supplied to the heating element through fuse F2 in the mounting block located in the vehicle interior.

Location of the main fuse block

The main fuse and relay block of the Lada Kalina is located under the left panel of the steering wheel, where the main light switch is located.

In order to gain access to the main fuse panel of the Lada Kalina, you need to do a number of manipulations:

    On the closing panel, on the left and right, there are grooves that need to be pulled alternately. Also below. This operation should be done carefully so as not to break the plastic fasteners.

Gently pull and remove from the grooves

Gained access to the fuse box

Thus, the fuses and relays of the main unit of the Lada Kalina, as well as the control board, are changed.

Location of additional fuse box

The additional fuse box is marked with an arrow in the photo.

The additional relay and fuse box for the Lada Kalina is located to the right of the front passenger's feet. It can be accessed by unscrewing the cover bolts and removing it. In order to dismantle this block, unscrew the 3 mounting bolts. The replacement process is carried out in the same way as with the main unit.
