FREQUENCY OF CHANGING TRANSMISSION OIL
If you look at the operating instructions for the VAZ 2107 car, it says that the transmission oil should be changed every 60–70 thousand kilometers. The problem is that these figures are only valid when the operating conditions of the car are close to ideal, which is not the case in practice. Why? Here are the reasons:
- low quality gear oil. The reality is that the modern car enthusiast often has no idea what exactly he is pouring into the gearbox. It's no secret that fake gear oil is found all the time. Products of well-known brands are especially often counterfeited, and the quality of the counterfeits is often such that only a specialist can recognize them;
- low quality of roads in the country. When driving on bad roads, the load on the gearbox increases significantly. As a result, the lubricant life is developed faster. In addition, the driver’s driving style has a significant impact on the oil life. For some car enthusiasts it is softer, for others it is more aggressive.
Taking into account the above, it is recommended to change the transmission oil after 40–50 thousand kilometers, and it is advisable to buy lubricant only in specialized stores that are official dealers of the selected lubricant brand. This is the only way to minimize the likelihood of purchasing counterfeit gear oil.
About types of transmission oils
Modern industry offers a wide range of different fluids, and the quality of the gearbox depends on the correct choice. At the moment, there are three types of oils: synthetic, semi-synthetic and mineral water . Each of these mixtures has its own set of characteristics and properties.
Mineral transmission is the most budget option. This oil has good lubricating properties, but has a significant drawback. In extreme cold conditions it freezes very quickly .
Unlike mineral water, synthetics and semi-synthetics have a higher price. In addition, such oils thicken less at low temperatures and are excellent for use in severe frosts. Synthetic and semi-synthetic oils also differ from each other. The consistency of semi-synthetic liquid is thicker than synthetics. It is great for cars with high mileage. Synthetic oil is better used for new gearboxes, as it is thinner and can leak if there are even the smallest defects in the seals.
When choosing products, first of all, you need to pay attention to viscosity. SAE index indicates .
SAE standards, transmission fluids are divided into the following categories:
- Summer oil (marking consists of numbers only).
- Winter mixture (in its designation it has the English letter W - winter ).
- All-season liquid. The marking of such a lubricant consists of two numbers, which are separated by the letter W. This oil can be used all year round.
Synthetic and semi-synthetic oils that have the following viscosity classes are suitable for the gearbox:
- SAE80W85 is an all-season liquid with a temperature range from -35 °C to +35 °C.
- SAE75W90 is a mixture used at any time of the year with a recommended temperature range from -40 °C to +35 °C.
- SAE75W85 is a multi-season oil, designed for work within the range of -40 °C...+45 °C.

CHECKING THE OIL LEVEL IN THE TRANSMISSION
To check the oil level in the gearbox, you need to do a number of simple steps.
- The car is installed on a viewing hole.
- The oil drain and fill holes on the gearbox are cleaned with a metal brush.
- Using a 17 wrench, unscrew the plug from the hole for adding oil.

Which oil to choose?
For filling into the gearbox (regardless of modification), the manufacturer recommends using oils of two groups:
- GL-4 is a highly additive fluid designed for high-speed, low-torque manual transmissions or low-speed, high-torque manual transmissions.
- GL-5 - oils designed for hypoid gears, in which the gears rotate at an angle to each other; have proven themselves well in gearboxes operated in harsh conditions.

I decided to take the synthetic oil XADO Verylube 75W-90 GL 3/4/5. It is slightly cheaper than XADO 75W-90 oil due to the absence of revitalizant. Otherwise, as I understand it, there are no differences. I bought the oil in the official XADO store in our city, from Zhenya Spice69. In addition to 3 liters of oil, I also took 3 liters of flushing oil, since the oil in the transmission has not been changed for a very long time, and there is probably a lot of crap in there, and on top of that - changing the type of oil and mineral water to synthetic. I bought the washing on tap, since it is packaged in 2-liter bags, but I need 3 liters) And it’s a little cheaper)

Since I have a garage without a pit, I had to solve this issue. In the nearest garage cooperative I found an overpass for 10 UAH/hour.
I stopped by and drained the old used oil from the axle and gearbox. The liquid drained from the box was generally black, and from the gearbox it was a little lighter.

The next step is to drain the rinse. The oil that came out of the box was quite dark, and from the bridge, surprisingly, it was more or less light; unfortunately, there are no photos. Well, now all that’s left to do is fill in new oil) As many people advise, when pouring oil into the box, I jacked up the front left wheel so that a little more oil could be poured into the box than the smart book says) Instead of the required 1.6 liters, I got about 1.7 liters of oil . And 1.3 liters in the gearbox. After the operations performed, we finally check the tightness of all the traffic jams, give the uncle the guard 30 UAH, and we are good to go))) Everything about everything took a little more than an hour, with the help of my best friend Yurik2101klasika))))
