Replacing the engine mount on Lada Kalina

Worn engine mounts (mounts) are the cause of many inconveniences that arise while driving. If the supports have hardened during operation, then the vibration of the engine is transmitted to the car body, which is clearly felt when it starts and when cornering.

They can also cause jerking while the engine is braking. If the supports are worn out quite heavily, sometimes extraneous sounds are heard from the engine - clicks and knocks. It is not difficult to replace the engine mount on the Lada Kalina yourself, the main thing is to follow the procedure.

First of all, you need to remove the engine compartment protection (if installed) or the mudguard. After this, disconnect the exhaust pipe (pants) from the exhaust manifold and unscrew the bracket that secures them to the body. In this case, you need to use WD-40 or a similar liquid, since the nuts on the studs will stick thoroughly. Do not knock them down under any circumstances - breaking a pin leads to big complications.

After the exhaust pipe is removed, you need to raise the engine 10-15 mm above its current position using a jack (it is best to lay a board or wide beam between the jack and the engine). Now we have access to the engine mounts and they are in their normal position. To replace the left or right airbag, in addition to regular wrenches, you may need a socket wrench.

When replacing a support, it is also better to use WD-40, since long-term operation puts stress on the threaded connection. Just as in the case of the exhaust pipe, do not apply excessive force so as not to damage the studs. After the necessary support has been replaced, we lower the engine completely and screw the exhaust pipe into place (it is also advisable to replace the gasket between it and the exhaust manifold, or at least coat it with thermal paste). We screw the exhaust pipe bracket into place, put the protection in place - the job is done!

To avoid problems with operation, experts advise every 10 thousand km. Check the condition of the engine mountings. To do this, you will also have to jack up the engine and check how well the mountings of the mountings are tightened.

Lada Granta 8 valve: main faults

Even taking into account the fact that the internal combustion engine of the Lada Granta 21116 is not the most complex unit structurally, certain problems associated with certain engine malfunctions may still arise during operation.

Main malfunctions and methods for their elimination:

The internal combustion engine begins to malfunction (dips occur, loss of power). Most often, this problem is associated with burnout of one of the valves or failure of the ignition coil. The problem is solved by restoring old parts or replacing them with new ones.

Replacing the gearbox cushion on a Kalina: when and how to change it

The Kalina is equipped with rubber-metal gearbox support cushions. This is a simple design consisting of two plates (metal), with rubber located between them.

The low price of the Lada Kalina caused a stir among car enthusiasts who need a car for every day. The budget suggests that it will need repairs soon. Replacing the Kalina gearbox cushion is not the easiest task.

What kind of gearbox cushions are there on Kalina?

These parts are different, and we are not talking about airbags. The first thing that comes to mind is the gearbox support cushion. They are hydraulic and rubber-metal.

Kalina has a large number of such parts installed. These are engine mount cushions that reduce vibration from the power unit. There is a rubber suspension cushion for the muffler resonator. It serves to get rid of extraneous knocks from the exhaust system.

Kalina gearbox cushion

The Kalina is equipped with rubber-metal gearbox support cushions. This is a simple design consisting of two plates (metal), with rubber located between them. Classic rubber is fading into the background, so more wear-resistant polyurethane is actively used. It’s easy to guess why most car enthusiasts install this type of support.

The supports serve to reduce vibration that occurs as a result of the operation of the power unit and suppress extraneous noise, as well as to secure the gearbox to the body.

Characteristic

What is this item? An engine mount is a gasket between body elements and the power unit. This is installed on all cars without exception. On Soviet Zhiguli cars, the cushion was a durable piece of rubber with fasteners on both sides. On more modern “nines” and “eights” (and subsequently all VAZs with a front-wheel drive layout) full-fledged rubber-metal supports were installed.

So, the power unit was mounted on four pillows. Two of them are on the gearbox, and the rest are on the engine. To avoid unnecessary loads, the box and motor are rigidly fixed. Any distortion leads to a change in the geometry of the input shaft. As a result, all the vibration is strongly transmitted to the gearbox lever and the transmission itself.

Where are the pillows? This element is installed on the engine from several sides:

Also note that not all vehicles have a rear support. This function is performed by the gearbox itself.

In this case, it is attached closely to the motor. The pillows themselves are made in different shapes. They are often an aluminum or steel cylinder with a silent block inside. To secure it to the body, a so-called “paw” is used. It also has a rubber spacer. This is exactly how modern engine mounts are designed. Symptoms, how to diagnose a part, what affects wear - we will consider in the course of this article.

What indicates the need to replace a particular pillow?

Many factors influence the service life of parts. The gearbox support is designed for an average of 100 thousand km. However, it is necessary to take into account temperature changes, which worsen the properties of rubber, and uneven roads, leading to premature wear. As a result, their service life may be significantly reduced.

The fasteners may be pulled out - this occurs as a result of loose tightening of the fastening bolts. The seats are being broken down. In this case, replacing the Kalina gearbox mount is inevitable.

A broken gearbox support affects the wear of the cushion

When oil leaks and gets on the supports, the properties of the rubber deteriorate, which also leads to wear.

With this malfunction, you will hear suspicious clicks and extraneous sounds in the front of the car. Usually the sounds appear when starting or braking. This is due to the high load at these moments.

Correct diagnosis of a breakdown is the key to a long vehicle life. To determine when it is necessary to replace the Kalina box cushion, look at it carefully. There should be no cracks or signs of delamination on the rubber. The rubber should be soft and not dry. If at least one sign is present, change the support, do not delay repairs. Continuing to drive a car with a worn mount may cause it to rupture.

Useful tips

Motorists recommend replacing the support in warm weather. In winter, the pillow becomes very dull, and can only be removed after preheating (using a hairdryer or blowtorch). If the support does not come out, it is recommended to use VD-40 type lubricant or its equivalent from. Regular lubricant will not work for this.

Often dust and moisture enter the cavity of the old cushion, resulting in corrosion processes occurring on the cylinder. It is not possible to remove the pillow. If you are replacing the rear support, pay attention to the direction indicated by the arrow on the part. It must be installed in the direction of travel of the vehicle. Otherwise, there is a risk that the element will not withstand the load and will break.

Replacing pillows

Failure to diagnose a fault in a timely manner can lead to more serious damage. Therefore, at the slightest suspicion of wear, take action.

Rear gearbox/engine

When clicking in the engine compartment, pay attention to the rubber-metal pad to which the gearbox bracket is attached. The appearance of hard impacts in the front of the car also indicates that it is necessary to replace the gearbox cushion on the Kalina. If it fails, urgent replacement is necessary.

First, prepare all the necessary tools: sockets, wrenches, jack.

Hanging a car

To make it easier to dismantle the gearbox support, the car must be driven into the inspection hole. Then put it on the handbrake and place chocks under the rear wheels.

Hanging the power unit

Now you need to place stops under the engine and under the gearbox so as not to break the clutch mechanism. Hydraulic mounts are perfect for this.

Install the stops so as not to damage the box body.

Removing the support and cushion

Now the most interesting part is dismantling the support. Unscrew the bracket that secures the brake and fuel lines under the bottom of the car, and move them as far as possible from the transmission support.

Unscrew the 2 bolts securing the pillow itself and the support bracket.

Replacing the pillow

After removing the old, worn-out cushion, install a new one in its place. Many Kalinovods install a support and bracket from a VAZ-2110 on their car (using a slight modification of the bracket to lower it a little).

Support for the Kalina checkpoint

In order not to waste time on modifications, you can install the original support.

Machine assembly

When all replacement operations have been completed - a new pillow has been installed, a bracket has been installed - tighten all the fasteners. Carefully remove the hydraulic feet from under the box and engine.

Drive your car a short distance, try to drive over uneven roads. If the extraneous sounds are gone, there are no more knocks in the front of the car when overcoming bumps, the problem has been diagnosed and solved correctly.

Rocker/lever

If the gear shift lever fails, its support must be immediately replaced.

Disassembling the interior and removing the handle

Replacing the gearshift lever cushion on a Lada Kalina involves dismantling the central tunnel.

  • Remove the leather gearshift lever cover. To do this, lift it on all sides along the perimeter of the base.
  • Remove the central plastic tunnel, which is secured with screws and self-tapping screws.
  • Unscrew the 4 bolts on the metal pad that holds the rubber support.

Finally, unscrew the central bolt that holds the plastic bushings and connects the handle to the gearbox rod.

Disconnecting wiring

To make it easier to dismantle the rocker support, turn off the power supply to the lock button. It is designed to engage reverse gear.

Turning off jet thrust

To remove the rocker pad, you need to disconnect the box drive.

To do this, crawl under the car and loosen the linkage by loosening the clamp. The pillow is free, all that remains is to disconnect the boot.

Replacing the pillow

Now nothing prevents you from installing a new rubber cushion instead of the old one.

Car assembly

After installing the new pad, return the drive to its original position. Screw on the metal plate. Replace the plastic bushings, fasten them and the gearshift knob with the bolt that was removed earlier.

Rear engine mount of Lada Kalina

Connect the reverse locking chip and install the center tunnel. Place the leather cover on the gearshift lever.

This completes the assembly of the car after replacing the rubber support of the rocker.

Adjusting the gear shift drive

In order to engage gears correctly, it is sometimes necessary to adjust the gearbox linkage. To do this, place the shift lever in the reverse gear position. Loosen the clamp connecting the torque rod to the adapter.

While holding the rocker, have an assistant set the lever to the correct position for reverse gear. After this, screw the mounting bolt back. This completes the adjustment of the rocker.

So think about it now. One has an effect, the other does not. It's like they're on different cars.

Yes, it seems to me that it’s really impossible to feel the difference.

I also carried out the same operation, I just installed the stock original pillows, well, the Grant ones didn’t inspire confidence in me; they were too soft. And I got the original pillows, no matter the price, as it happens EVERYWHERE for 590 rubles, the gearbox pillow is 300,

I did the right thing by changing it, especially since the gearbox cushion looked like it was definitely asking for a replacement! Strange, when replacing the gearbox support, I immediately noticed that the low-frequency noise in the cabin had become significantly smaller and the vibrations had decreased. Maybe because my gearbox torque rod has been removed. But when I changed the side supports of the engine to Anvis, the impressions were twofold: at idle the vibrations decreased a little, and when driving, sometimes I began to feel how the engine was moving on these supports (this is especially felt during sharp acceleration and on uneven roads). This is how the pies turned out...)

Structurally, I only like the rear gearbox cushion, and the side ones are very loose, unlike the Kalinov ones, the emphasis on them is more powerful than on the Grant ones, this is exactly what gives the engine telephony.

I agree about the Grant side airbags. In my opinion, this design solution for the pillows is due to the fact that the Grant engine already has a light piston engine - therefore there is less vibration from it. and if you put thin supports on a viburnum with a heavy piston engine, the fine-frequency vibrations will naturally decrease, but most likely there will be a feeling of engine rocking, without additional upper support from the extension of the cups...

This is exactly what I wanted to say, but you described it in more detail, well done! It seems like the only comments on my page are negative about these supports, but where I didn’t read everything they said that this is the solution to all problems with vibration. I expressed my opinion. On viburnum the Kalinovskie ones are better!

Did the supports become any problem?

There were no particular problems with the installation, the left side was just sweaty, it didn’t want to fit onto the studs itself, so I had to help with the installation.

I recently started hearing a sound when starting, as if something inside the dashboard was vibrating.
