So which “janitor crew” should you prefer? Newfangled hybrid or familiar frameless? Bosch or Denso? More expensive or cheaper? As a result, we decided to hold a professional skills competition. The Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant volunteered to help us: it has a couple of stands for life testing of brushes - you can drive it for at least a year. But we limited the test period to four months: this roughly corresponds to a year’s mileage on a live car.

Each pair of windshield wipers was bought in triplicate - just like in Gaidaev’s comedy. The first - on the stand, the second - in the thermal chamber, the third - on the car for comparison: it was and is now.

At the same time, on the left (driver's side) the maximum size of the brushes is indicated. If you set it even 1 cm more, the wipers will knock and fail faster. On the right passenger side it is possible to increase the length of the brushes. The maximum length in this case will be 45 cm.

Most often, when replacing, drivers prefer to choose a longer wiper on the passenger side as it cleans the windshield better. The price in this case differs slightly.

Motorists approach the issue of selecting wipers for Lada individually. Some people don’t like blades that are too long, while others, on the contrary, are sure that the more area the windshield is cleaned, the better.

Most often, frameless wipers “Lada-Grants” are offered with a size of 60 x 45 cm. They are easy to use and have a longer service life.

The cheapest option is the frame brushes that come with a new car, but they don’t last long.

How to understand that the length of the wipers is chosen incorrectly:

The glass is difficult to clean even after prolonged operation of the wipers. Ideally, the brush should clean the windshield in an average of three passes over it. The quality of cleaning decreases when the wiper is not pressed tightly against the glass.
During operation, the brush touches the rubber seal on the windshield and cleans in stripes.
During operation, the wipers (right and left) touch each other and slow down movement, and accordingly affect the driver’s viewing angle. This indicates that the wiper blades are too long. Sometimes long brushes can even touch the driver's door, which is accompanied by a knock.
Wipers that are too small clean a small area of the windshield, reducing visibility through it, especially on the driver's side.

The length of the driver's windshield wiper is 600 mm. The length of the passenger wiper is 410 mm. The type of fastening is “hook” (hook in English).

Foreign manufacturers indicate the length of the windshield wiper in inches, so the suitable length for a passenger blade is 16″. Sixteen inches - 406 mm, probably because of this, brushes with lengths of both 40 and 41 cm can be installed on the right side of the Granta. If desired, you can install a passenger windshield wiper up to 45 cm, but I would recommend staying in the range of 400...410 mm.

I have added brush article numbers to the selection: they will help you find specific products in stores that sell auto parts (this is faster and, most likely, cheaper). Also, the articles will allow you to avoid compromises in the form of several centimeters in the length of the brushes - choose only what is made specifically for your car.

HOW WERE THE RESULTS EVALUATED

Technical indicators were assessed by a group of experts on a 5-point scale; these assessments were recorded in the test report. Ratings for the price/quality ratio were also given on a 5-point scale: according to the principle “more is better.” The calculation method is simple: dividing the cost of each product by the number of points scored, the best attitude was given a score of 5 points, and the worst - 1 point. The rest received proportional intermediate grades. Thus, an “excellent” student could ideally receive 5 points for both technical results and optimal pricing policy. The same applies to the outsider, who in both cases was threatened with one.

Change brushes at least once a year!

The competition turned out to be democratic: long and short, America and Eurasia were represented. Prices range from 300 to 910 rubles per piece. We were pleased that we did not notice the overwhelming superiority of one design over the other. From an engineer’s point of view, everything is logical: advertising is advertising, but there is no need to lose your head. Frankly, only the overseas “Tights” couldn’t handle it: tearing off the tape is almost like hitting glass with a shovel. But the malfunction is not directly related to the type of design: a specific technology clearly failed.

It is curious that “Anko”, “Champion” and “Tights”, even being new, did not receive the maximum rating. Bench tests reduced the cleaning quality of all products, albeit to varying degrees. This reinforces the need for an annual “changing of the guard” on the windshield. Competitors are listed in alphabetical order. The best value for money is the German Heiner Hybrid; Denso, Valeo and Vin scored the maximum points. Our choice ultimately fell on the Korean “Denso”: low price, text in Russian, excellent scores and... And, whatever one may say, the most modern design. You can't escape fashion.

Replacing standard wipers on Priora is carried out as quickly as possible, without tools:

Raise the windshield wiper arm.
Unclip the cover that secures the brush to the lever.
Lower the brush and remove it from the hook of the lever.
Place the new part on the hook instead of the previous one.

To replace the elements of the windshield wiper (together with the arms), do the following:

Disconnect the negative from the battery;
On the left under the hood, remove part of the sound insulation. Remove the expansion tank.
Above the wheel arch, unscrew the nuts securing the tank (the “10” head will help).
Unscrew the bolts of the upper fastening of the windshield wiper trapezoid, remove the special bracket.
Disconnect the wires from the motor by first pressing the latch.
Find the heater and unscrew the top mounting screw with a Phillips screwdriver.
Use a marker to mark the position of the crank. Remove the trapeze and then the motors.
To carry out dismantling on the right side, you will have to remove some of the units from the right - this way it is more convenient to carry out the work.
Install the windshield wiper trapezoid in the reverse order.

Above the driver's knee (just below the headlight on/off unit) there is a plastic part of the upholstery, which can be removed by unscrewing three bolts. Relays (cubic and rectangular) are hidden under it, and a little lower is the fuse box (dies with a plastic cover). A good fuse is one in which the metal coil is visible through the inspection hole in the cap. If there is no metal coil, then the device is faulty.
