All modern spark plugs, regardless of which company they are manufactured by or what features they have (for example, spark plugs with platinum elements), have a completely identical device.
Spark plugs VAZ 2114
They include components:
- contact nut for high voltage wires;
- insulator (heat-resistant ceramic);
- a faceted metal insert on the insulator, used for unscrewing the spark plug with a key;
- sealing ring;
- lateral contact;
- central contact.
Spark plug device
There should always be a working gap between the last two elements (for injectors - about 1 mm) - in this gap a high-voltage spark will jump, igniting the working mixture in the cylinder (a separate spark plug is installed for each engine cylinder).
As for the period after which it is necessary to replace spark plugs on a VAZ 2114, it is: about 10 thousand km for simple budget-level spark plugs, about 15-25 thousand km for simple spark plugs from “branded” manufacturers, about 70- 100 thousand km for platinum/iridium spark plugs.
How to remove spark plugs?
To remove and install spark plugs we will need the following tools:
- spark plug key;
- a can of compressed air or a tire compressor;
- brush;
- a set of new spark plugs.
- We turn off the car and open the hood.
- If you have a VAZ 2114 with a 1.6 liter engine, then remove the plastic trim by unscrewing the fasteners. On a VAZ 2114 with a 1.5 engine, you don’t need to do anything.
- We remove the High Voltage (HV) wires by pulling them out by the rubber caps.
- We take the spark plug key and throw it on the candle. We unscrew the candle.
- We perform the same operation with all candles.
What you might need
Before you get started, you should stock up on:
- Special spark plug wrench;
Candle key
- A small bottle of compressed air (or a tire compressor instead);
Compressed air cylinder
- Brush for cleaning from burning and dirt;
Wire brush
- Already purchased a set of new spark plugs.

How to install spark plugs?
The process of installing spark plugs is as simple as removing them:
- We inspect the new spark plug and check the gap on the spark plug between the electrodes.
- First of all, we take the spark plug and tighten it by hand (not with a wrench) in order to avoid stripping the thread if installed incorrectly.
- After twisting the spark plug a little, tighten it with a wrench.
- We connect the high-voltage wires, making sure that the contacts of the wires fit tightly to the spark plug (the wires must be connected in series, each wire is marked which cylinder it is connected to).
Ignition switch and features of its replacement
ZZ plays an important role in the vehicle's SZ, both for an 8-cl and 16-cl engine. It is activated when the starter is working, thanks to it the lighting, turn signals, and power windows work.
Replacement or repair of the VAZ 2115 ignition switch may be required if:
- lost or broken keys;
- the lock was damaged during an attempted theft;
- the 3Z cylinder is faulty;
- The contact group does not work.
To replace you will need: a set of keys, a hammer, screwdrivers, a thin chisel.
The replacement procedure consists of the following steps:
- The car's power is turned off by disconnecting the negative terminal from the battery.
- We remove the steering wheel.
- Next you need to remove the steering column switches.
- Then you need to loosen the bolts securing the clamp that holds the ZZ on the steering column. If the heads are cut off, the bolts should be carefully knocked out using a hammer and a thin chisel.
- Now you need to disconnect the wiring harness.
- Next, you need to completely unscrew the bolts from the 3Z housing and you can remove it.
- A new device is installed in place of the old one.
- Assembly is carried out in reverse order.
After assembly, you should start the engine and check the operation of the switch (the author of the video is the MY LADA channel).

Rating of the best spark plugs for injection cars VAZ-2112, 2115
Most manufacturers specify different replacement times for their spark plugs. In principle, the VAZ automobile industry is characterized by a general indicator of 25-30 thousand kilometers of vehicle mileage.
Advice. Of course, if you notice any problems with the operation of your car or the failure of one of the spark plugs with less mileage, then it is advisable to replace this part immediately.
The spark plugs that are installed on the VAZ-2112 and 2115 are almost identical to each other, so we will consider the rating of spark plugs common to both car models. They may differ slightly in their composition, appearance, etc. But their characteristics are the same. We bring to your attention the five most popular manufacturers of spark plugs for injection VAZ-2112 and 2115:
Spark plugs NGK BCPR6ES-11
- Champion RC9YC. English made candles. Low fuel consumption is observed, they are distinguished by “endurance” and considerable power when the engine operates at high speeds.
- NGK BCPR6ES-11. They are distinguished by an affordable price and at the same time impressive performance: they are resistant to wear, stabilize engine operation, and are also able to increase its power, provided that the throttle valve is opened “to the maximum.”
- Brisk DR15YC. An inexpensive model of Czech-made injection spark plugs is perfect for cars driven mostly in urban areas: thanks to the elongated insulator, the spark plug cores quickly and perfectly clean themselves.
- Bosch FR7DCU. A manufacturer that has proven itself in the best possible way. The design of the spark plugs features a copper central electrode covered with a chromium-nickel shell - this increases its resistance to corrosion and erosion. When tested, Boshev candles show not very high, but fairly stable results.
- Beru 14FR-7DU. In their design, these candles are very similar to Boshev's: the core is covered with a nickel shell, which makes the candles also resistant to corrosion and erosion processes. And thanks to the conical skirt, the candles clean themselves quite quickly. In addition, spark plugs from Beru differ in one “trick”: they produce a high-power spark - the fuel burns very efficiently and to the maximum.
We have presented to your attention a list of the best manufacturers of spark plugs for cars of the VAZ-2112, 2115 and Niva series
Be sure to pay attention to the appearance of the candles when choosing the appropriate model. We are sure you will be able to make a good choice
Good luck!
When is it time to replace the spark plug?
The operating interval of one set of spark plugs is usually designed for fourteen to twenty thousand kilometers. Although, the deadlines that manufacturers set are much longer - thirty thousand kilometers. Perhaps such a significant difference in numbers was due to the large number of counterfeit products on the modern auto parts market. And, nevertheless, if you trust the opinion of experienced car owners, then it is better to carry out the replacement procedure early rather than late. What troubles can they bring in used condition:
- Gasoline consumption will increase significantly.
- The cost of operating a car will increase.
- Starting a cold engine will become difficult and take a long time.
- There will be misfires.
- Engine operation will no longer be stable.
Helpful advice: often thrifty drivers put off buying and replacing spark plugs. This is mainly done for reasons of economy. But, as you already know, when they are heavily worn, gasoline consumption increases significantly and visits to the gas station become more frequent. Don't get carried away by the illusion of savings; replace regularly.
If your car has managed to accumulate an impressive mileage on one set of spark plugs, and the car’s traction has begun to weaken, then your VAZ 2114 needs to replace the spark plugs.
DIY replacement instructions
Replacing spark plugs on VAZ 2114 and 2115 is not a complicated process. This work can be performed by any motorist, following the step-by-step instructions given below.
Tools and materials
To carry out the procedure you need to prepare:
- key for removing protection;
- a set of round probes;
- spark plug key;
- new set of SZ.
To avoid counterfeiting, you should purchase original products.
The process of dismantling and replacing SZ
The procedure for removing and replacing spark plugs should be carried out on a cool engine to avoid burns.
The process itself consists of the following steps:
- First you need to open the hood. Then you need to remove the protection from the engine, if present.
- After removing the decorative trim, you need to remove the protective caps with high-voltage wires that are placed on the contacts. The caps should be removed carefully so as not to damage the wiring.
- The areas near the NW should be cleared of dirt so that they do not get into the engine cylinders.
- Now, using a spark plug wrench, you need to unscrew the S3 from the cylinder head. You can start twisting from any side. First you need to move it from the dead center, and then you can carefully unscrew the SZ from the socket.
- Having turned out the old SZ, you need to wipe the thread with a rag.
- Before screwing in new products, it is advisable to check the gap on each of them. For cars with an injector, it should be from 1 to 1.13 mm.
- Installing the SZ is the same simple procedure as unscrewing; it is carried out in the reverse order. New products are placed in the seats of old candles. You need to screw it in carefully so as not to damage the threads in the cylinder head or on the product.
- Next you need to put on the ends of the high-voltage wires. In this case, you need to make sure that the numbers of the wires that are printed on them match.
- At the final stage, the decorative overlay is returned to its place.
After replacing the SZ, it is necessary to observe how the engine operates. If it works intermittently, it is possible that one of the SZ has defects. To detect it, you need to sequentially disconnect each high-voltage wire. A faulty spark plug should be replaced.
Price issue
High-quality products always cost more. Domestic products are several times cheaper, but the quality leaves much to be desired. Therefore, it is worth buying imported candles that will last much longer than domestic ones. At the same time, the service life of the engine will be extended, and fuel will be consumed more economically.
Is there a difference in brands and manufacturers?
There is a difference and it is significant. Before buying new spark plugs, you should once again look at the car’s operating instructions and check which marking is suitable for your car. On a VAZ 2114, replacement of spark plugs can be from either a domestic or an imported manufacturer. For carburetors with contact ignition, the A17DV spark plug will fit with a gap of 0.5 millimeters. For carburetors with a contactless system, the same is suitable, but with a gap of 0.7 millimeters. For those with injectors, the A17DV-10 at 1.3 millimeters is more suitable.
Poor quality spark plugs lead to poor engine starting
Replacing spark plugs for VAZ 2110
If the spark plugs are not replaced within the time specified in the recommendations, nothing bad will happen, the car may simply not start.
Note. Although, if one of the spark plugs does not work well, excess fuel consumption is possible.
Therefore, it is advisable to pay special attention to the warning signs. These signs include:
- worse engine starting (the starter is activated, but the engine is “silent”);
- twitching of the engine when driving or idling;
- high fuel consumption;
- large CO emissions;
- unsatisfactory dynamics of the engine, which does not produce the maximum number of revolutions, which affects power.
Paying attention to the signs described above, you need to draw timely conclusions, namely, dismantle the old spark plugs, so as not to waste money on expensive engine repairs later. Warning signs have been listed, now let’s pay attention to the signs that indicate a malfunction of the spark plugs:
- Black, wet deposits may cause the oil level in the crankcase to rise.
- Worn piston rings or cylinders may indicate faulty spark plugs.
- Black carbon may indicate late ignition.
- If the insulator is dry and white, it may be causing pre-ignition.
- Due to the incorrect selection of the heating value, the candles will not be able to self-clean, that is, they will become covered with soot. All this can destroy the insulator.
Note! Self-cleaning of candles slows down the process of plaque formation. For this to happen, the temperature threshold of the lower part of the insulator cone must not be exceeded. This figure is 500-600 degrees.
It is recommended to monitor the gap level so that it does not deviate from the factory standard. If the level of this gap increases, the ignition coil will fail. If this figure is less, cylinders may misfire, which causes increased fuel consumption. By bending the side electrode, it becomes possible to adjust the gap level. You can measure the indicator with a cylindrical probe. When choosing spark plugs, you need to pay attention to many factors:
- all product parameters must meet the design parameters of the engine;
- Don’t pay attention to fakes; they mostly copy candles from well-known brands;
- It is recommended to buy spark plugs with an iridium or platinum central electrode, as they are of higher quality, but are more expensive.
How to properly remove the high-voltage wire from the spark plug on a VAZ-2114
Let's go further, carefully remove the high voltage wire from the spark plug of the 1st cylinder and place it on the cylinder head. It is necessary to remove high-voltage wires by holding them by the protective cap, and in no case by the wire itself, since in this case the contact between the wire and the cap can be broken, after which the armor wires will have to be replaced.
After this, it is necessary to mechanically clean carbon deposits and accumulated dirt from the sockets in which the spark plugs are installed. This must be done so that when replacing the spark plugs, the debris that has collected around them does not end up in the combustion chamber. Trying to wash off dirt is pointless and unreasonable, since all of it will somehow go inside the engine, which sooner or later will give results and cause damage to the piston group of your car.
We find out which spark plug wrench is needed for the VAZ 2114
All modern spark plugs, regardless of which company they are manufactured by or what features they have (for example, spark plugs with platinum elements), have a completely identical device.
They include components:
- contact nut for high voltage wires;
- insulator (heat-resistant ceramic);
- a faceted metal insert on the insulator, used for unscrewing the spark plug with a key;
- sealing ring;
- lateral contact;
- central contact.
Replacement procedure
- We turn off the engine and be sure to wait until it cools down;
- Raise the hood lid and fix it in the open position;
- If your engine capacity is 1.6 liters, then you will have to unscrew the fasteners and remove the plastic cover (owners whose engine capacity is below 1.6 liters do not face this procedure, because they do not have this plastic cover on their car);
- We pull out the high-voltage wires using the rubber caps;
- We remove the resulting dirt and carbon deposits with a brush;
- We unscrew the spark plug by placing a spark plug wrench on it;
- We repeat the same steps with the remaining old candles;
- The new spark plug should be inspected again, the gap between its electrodes should be checked;
- First, we tighten the new part by hand, not with a tool, this will protect the thread from breaking if the installation suddenly turns out to be incorrect;
- We continue the twisting procedure, but with a tool;
- We reconnect the high-voltage wires we removed earlier (the explosive contacts should fit snugly in the spark plug).
Attention! A common mistake for novice car enthusiasts. Each spark plug has its own high-voltage wire. Under no circumstances should they be confused. The wire must be connected to the cylinder in series, following the marking rules.
You should not tighten the parts with special frenzy; their threads can be seriously damaged by rough forceful movements.
Replacement process
Before replacing, you need to prepare: study safety precautions, select the necessary tools and materials.
Safety rules when replacing spark plugs:
- Carry out the replacement procedure when the engine temperature drops below 30-40 degrees Celsius. Thanks to this recommendation, you can prevent the occurrence of burns on the skin.
- Disconnect the on-board network. To do this, disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
- Wear gloves. They will help protect your hands from minor injuries.
Required tools and materials:
- Candle key;
- Compressed air cylinder;
- Brush for removing dirt;
- New ignition elements;
- Gloves.
Step by step procedure for replacing spark plugs:
- Stop the operation of the power unit. Wait until it cools down to an acceptable operating temperature.
- Lift the hood lid. Using a special design, fix it in the open position.
- Grab the rubber caps of the high-voltage wires and carefully pull them out of their installation locations.
- Clean the surface from dirt using a brush.
- Unscrew the ignition element using the key.
- Carry out similar actions with the remaining candles.
- Check the new spark supply element. Measure the gap between the electrodes.
- Tighten the consumable by hand. Complete an action using a tool.
- Connect high voltage wires.
Please note: the main mistake of a novice car owner is to confuse the wires. You can't do this. High-voltage wiring is connected according to the markings in strict sequence for each cylinder.
Replacing spark plugs on a VAZ 2114
The next step is to unscrew the spark plug using a spark plug wrench, usually a 16 or 21 socket wrench, depending on what spark plugs are installed on your car. Spark plugs are unscrewed only when the engine is stopped and cooled; if this rule is violated, there is a possibility of getting burned and damaging the threads. If even after the spark plug is “torn off” it continues to unscrew tightly, there is no need to rush, make a couple of turns in the opposite direction and try to carefully unscrew it again. This must be done so as not to damage the threads in the cylinder head under any circumstances. If the spark plug is difficult and tight to unscrew, this may be due to the fact that a large amount of soot has accumulated on its walls or rod.
So, when the spark plug is unscrewed, you can install a new, pre-prepared spark plug. Install and tighten it until your fingers begin to slip, then arm yourself with a spark plug wrench and tighten it, being vigilant and careful not to accidentally strip the thread. Excessive tightening of the spark plugs is fraught with damaged threads in the cylinder head, as well as subsequent problems with replacing spark plugs.
Checking and replacing the ignition coil
On rear-wheel drive cars of the classic family with a carburetor engine, the ignition coil (in automotive circles it is often called a “bobbin”) is installed in the engine compartment on the left mudguard and secured with two nuts.
On later injection versions, an ignition module is installed, mounted on the cylinder block.
Before deciding to replace the coil, you should make sure that it is not working, otherwise the repair may be useless and money will be wasted.
Verification methods
The simplest method, which does not require special equipment, but is unsafe. Remove the central high-voltage wire and crank the engine by turning the ignition key. At the same time, we lean the removed wire against ground or the car body. If there is a spark, then the coil is ok. An assistant may be needed for this operation.
The second method, which is also more accurate, is to measure the resistance of the coil windings using a multimeter measuring device or “popularly” using a tester.
Measuring ignition coil resistance
We clean the coil contacts (studs on the body). The first check is the resistance of the primary winding. To do this, connect an ohmmeter to two studs and take measurements. Depending on the type of coil being tested, the resistance should be within the following limits: coil 2101-2107 B-117A = 3-3.5 Ohm; coil 2108-099 027.3705 = 0.45-0.5 Ohm.
Then we check the resistance in the secondary winding circuit. We connect one terminal of the tester to the central terminal of the high-voltage wire, and leave the second terminal of the probe at the terminal of the primary winding. In this case, the resistance of the working coil should be as follows: B-117A = 7.4-9.2 kOhm; 027.3705 = about 5 kOhm.
Replacement with a new one
To replace the ignition coil (bobbin) of a VAZ 2107, you must do the following:
- We remove the high-voltage wire from the coil cover.
- Using a size 8 wrench, unscrew the nut from the terminal marked “B” on the coil cover and remove the ends of the green and brown wires. To avoid losing small nuts, we recommend putting them in place.
- Similarly, disconnect the blue wire with a black stripe from the terminal marked with the letter “K”.
- If the colors of the wires turn out to be different, and this is possible, mark their position before disconnecting. From terminal “B” the wire is laid in the wiring harness, from terminal “K” - one is connected to the terminal of the ignition distributor, the second goes into the harness.
- Using a 10mm wrench, unscrew the coil mounting nuts three to four turns.
- We remove it from the car.
We install the new coil in the reverse order, observing the written order of connecting the wires.
Models and manufacturers
There are several models of ignition coils on the shelves of car dealerships. For “classics” (2101-2107) - B-117A, and for VAZ cars of the eighth family (2108-21099) - 027.3705.
Basically, all reels are of domestic production, manufacturing companies: ATE-2, Citron, Stary Oskol. According to numerous reviews, coils from Stary Oskol are considered to be the highest quality.
After replacement
Unpleasant surprises can await car owners even after old ignition parts are replaced with new ones. This can happen if the store sold you a bad, faulty spark plug. In this case, the engine jerks and runs intermittently. Naturally, the defective part must be replaced again. And in order to determine which one is faulty, you will have to disconnect the explosives one by one. When the wire with a faulty spark plug is disconnected, no changes in engine operation are observed.
Replacing spark plugs on a VAZ 2114
Replacement time
Failure of a spark plug occurs due to improper operation of the vehicle, incorrect selection of the brand, or poor fuel. As a result, defects appear on the elements, which can be used to identify engine malfunctions.
Basic faults
- The spark plug body and electrode are oily .
Occurs due to wear of the piston rings. Oil between the rings and the cylinder wall penetrates the combustion chamber, flooding the electrode. A wet element does not produce a spark regularly, and the engine begins to operate intermittently, with a drop in power. There is a need to repair the engine with all the ensuing problems. Old and new spark plugs - Chip or breakage of the insulator .
This defect, in order to avoid detonation, requires replacing the spark plugs. Spark plugs with a broken insulator need to be replaced - Plaque on the body (prevents sparking).
Requires thorough cleaning. The cause of the plaque is considered to be low quality fuel (gasoline). Plaque on the spark plug body appears as a result of using low quality gasoline. - Overheating of the case (presence of a white tint on it).
The reason for this is high-octane gasoline, for example, Au 95 instead of Au76 or Au 92. On the VAZ-2114, owners recommend using 92 gasoline. White deposits indicate overheating of the spark plug. - The mismatch between the spark plug brand and the engine is also a reason for their overheating.
The white color of the insulator and the melted electrode indicate the use of a lean combustible mixture. This leads to the appearance of carbon deposits inside the cylinder. And the excessive length of the threaded element of the spark plug leads to damage to the piston.
How to replace spark plugs?
Before considering the question of how to change the spark plugs of a VAZ 2114, you should first talk about how this can be done? The answer here will be very simple - a spark plug wrench.
Spark plug keys for VAZ 2114
They are available in a variety of shapes, lengths and sizes of the working part. The most important thing to consider when purchasing this tool is the size of the VAZ 2114 spark plug wrench. It should be exactly 21 mm, no more, no less. All other characteristics, for example length, are not so important.
We can only say that many experienced car enthusiasts and car service workers advise not to save money and to purchase a more expensive key with a universal joint and a handle. It is much more convenient to use than a regular tubular wrench with holes for a wrench or screwdriver.
A type of spark plug key VAZ 2114
In addition to the spark plug wrench, you will also need a soft steel brush and a compressor (or a small can of compressed air).
The replacement procedure is performed in the following order (only on a completely cooled engine):
- Open the hood and remove the engine cover (if equipped).
- Remove the high voltage wires from the spark plugs.
- Clean both the spark plugs themselves and the surface around them with a soft brush and compressed air (so that when unscrewing, dirt does not fall into the spark plug wells).
- Use a spark plug wrench to unscrew the spark plugs (it’s best to just move them with a wrench and then unscrew them by hand - this will help avoid damaging the internal threads in the sockets).
- Take new spark plugs and check their clearance (it should be about 1 mm).
- Insert new spark plugs into place and tighten (at first - also by hand, with a key - only at the very end).
- Place the high-voltage wires onto the contact nut of the spark plugs.
- Put on the cover (if equipped) and close the hood.
The spark plugs should be replaced with new ones all at the same time. You should absolutely not replace only one or two spark plugs, even if the remaining ones seem to be “fully functional”.
WHAT TO DO IF IT'S FLOODED?
Every car owner should know what to do when the spark plugs are flooded. Most often, motorists encounter this problem when operating a vehicle in the cold season. In such cases, purging the motor will help. To do this you need to have with you:
- Candle key. Let me dwell on this in more detail. There are many of them in retail chains; any customer request can be satisfied. You can choose the simplest tubular one, the price of which is a little over 80 rubles. Or buy expensive keys with cardan shafts, at a price of 300 rubles apiece. Good reviews are received by such models as a key with a T-shaped handle FIT 63745, keys with cardan models FIT 63747, VIRA 511045, or this one.AIRLINE AK-S-01;
- Spark plugs, preferably new ones;
- Charged battery.
How to extend the life of a candle
The idea of extending the service life of our part seems very attractive. The question is how to do this correctly? Some drivers are confident that if they drive slowly, the spark plug will last them longer. And they are wrong! The spark plugs actually clean themselves, but only when driving fast. At high engine speeds, it is freed from the deposits that have formed.
In addition to high speeds, you can extend their service life by regularly checking the clearance. The latter must be within the limits established by the factory. Final recommendations:
- Carefully select new replacement spark plugs. They should fit your car as best as possible.
- In winter, allow the engine to warm up thoroughly before driving.
- Under no circumstances should candles be flooded.
- Always have an extra set of new candles with you.
Signs of faulty spark plugs
Signs of faulty spark plugs:
- Reduced power of the power unit and increased fuel consumption;
- Wave-like acceleration when sharply pressing the gas pedal;
- Stopping the power unit at high speeds;
- Prolonged cranking of the starter when starting the power unit;
- Triple.
Some symptoms may appear under special operating conditions. For example, when warming up the engine at sub-zero temperatures. However, this still indicates that the ignition element is faulty.

Signs that it's time to replace spark plugs
The above figures are approximate and should not be strictly adhered to. Sometimes even a simple candle can last longer than its allotted time, but a “branded” one may turn out to be of poor quality and quickly fail.
Incorrect “minor repairs” of flooded spark plugs by calcination or cleaning using coarse sandpaper also greatly reduce the service life.
Taking all this into account, replacing spark plugs with new ones should be done not according to some digital indicators, but guided by the following signs of their wear:
- the color of the electrodes is different from brown and does not change after cleaning (white color indicates overheating, black/dark brown indicates problems with fuel combustion);
- there is practically unremovable plaque/carbon deposits on the electrodes;
How to choose good candles
When choosing spark plugs for 2114 8 valve injector, you should be guided by the following important points:
- Electrode homogeneity. A high-quality branded candle, even a budget-class one, will have electrodes with a clean, single-color surface. The presence of any stains on it should immediately cause refusal of the purchase.
- Manufacturer. It is best to give preference to time-tested products. Thus, spark plugs from Finwhale, Champion, and Bosch Platin receive good reviews from car enthusiasts.
- Color and size of electrodes. The highest quality candles have the thinnest electrodes (they are usually made of alloys of gold, silver, palladium, platinum or are coated with these metals). Spark plugs with the usual thick electrodes are more budget-friendly and have a shorter service life and lower-quality spark production.
One of the most objective methods of identifying a fake is to study its value. As already mentioned, the electrodes of good spark plugs contain rare earth or even precious metals, which makes their high price obvious. That is why you should not purchase such products, the cost of which does not differ from the cost of ordinary candles, because in the vast majority of cases they will turn out to be fake.
Which spark plugs to choose for the VAZ 2114 and how often should they be changed?
Most car enthusiasts and Samara owners are wondering how often spark plugs should be changed. Let's try to find the answer to this and many other questions regarding such an important element in the car as candles. They seem like small things that can fit in the palm of your hand, but the car won’t move without them.
Spark plug
WHAT ARE CAR CANDLES
A spark plug is a small part of a car engine that creates an electric spark that ignites the fuel-air mixture. Using a spark, it creates a mini-explosion in the cylinder, due to which the piston begins its movement. The number of such mini-fuzes in the engine is determined by the number of cylinders. Ordinary business class cars, and in particular VAZ 2114 cars, have four-cylinder engines, which means there are 4 units installed in it. But there are elite class cars or sports cars. They have six- to eight-cylinder internal combustion engines, respectively, 6-8 pieces are installed.
Let's look at the spark plugs for the VAZ Samara. As mentioned above, 4 pieces are installed in the VAZ internal combustion engine. Each consists of a nickel housing, a contact rod protected by a ceramic insulator. A spark occurs when the central and side electrodes come together.
It is important that all 4 candles work synchronously, which means they must be from the same manufacturer and the same brand, that is, from the same materials. It is not advisable to replace one or two spark plugs. If it’s time to change, then it’s better to have all 4 at once.
DEFECTS AND DAMAGE TO SPARK PLUGS
During operation, damage and defects may appear on the spark plugs. Sometimes they are the result of improper operation, sometimes due to the wrong brand of spark plugs. Defects on the spark plugs can also help diagnose engine problems. What will happen if you do not change the spark plugs when defects occur, you will learn from this section of the article. The brown color of the electrodes and the absence of damage indicate that the spark plugs are operating normally and you can continue driving.
Examples of defects and description:
- The electrodes and housing are filled with oil. This defect indicates that the removable rings on the pistons are worn out and require replacement. It is the rings that allow oil to pass through, and the plugs filled with liquid spark irregularly and detonate. The engine needs to be repaired urgently. Dirty igniters must be washed from oil, dried and inspected. If there are no other defects, then they can be left for further use.
- The electrode insulation is broken . You cannot drive with chipped insulation; you need to change the spark plugs, as they cause detonation in the engine.
- Plaque on the surface of the body indicates low quality gasoline. It is necessary to change the gas station that sells the surrogate, and clean the spark plugs from deposits that prevent a spark from occurring, and you can continue to drive on them.
- Overheating of the housing is indicated by white spark plugs or a worn out upper electrode. Ignition devices can overheat for two reasons:
- You use high-octane gasoline, which means you need to change its brand;
- The type of spark plugs is not suitable for your engine and therefore they also need to be replaced.
- A lean mixture and the formation of carbon deposits inside the cylinders are indicated by the white color of the insulator with a smoky tint to the body and slightly melted electrodes.
- Painting the body and contact in a golden or glossy color, as well as mechanical damage, indicate that this brand of spark plugs is not suitable for your engine. The last defect occurs due to the excessive length of the element. Incorrectly selected, long specimens can damage the piston. Therefore, they also need to be replaced.

What candles should I put?
Choosing candles is a responsible matter. The service life of the engine, its power, fuel consumption, and successful starting depend on their quality.
When choosing, the greatest attention should be paid to the central electrode, such indicators as: heat resistance, thermal conductivity and ductility.
The best products are candles in which the smallest gap is 0.4 -0.8 mm, made of expensive materials: platinum, iridium, palladium coated with silver or gold (video author - Avtosferaomsk).
It is important to understand what kind of spark plugs are produced for the VAZ 2114. When choosing a new product, you need to study its characteristics in order to choose which spark plugs are better. A large number of SZ manufacturers have appeared on the car market, but there are several leaders whose products are in greatest demand. SZ must work synchronously, so you need to buy them from the same manufacturer and from the same material.
Domestic manufacturers include DVRM candles, produced in the city of Engels. They are installed on VAZs from the factory. The quality of the products corresponds to the price, but there are defects, so when purchasing they need to be checked for serviceability. Products A-17DVRM (1.0) are produced for engines with injector 8 and A-17DVRM (1.0) for 16 valves.
Domestic SZ A-17DVRM
Among imported products, good Czech Brisk candles. They are in demand due to their good quality. 10 series of these products are produced, differing in design. They have a clearance of 1.1, there is an SZ for 8 valve injection engines - BRISK SUPER FORTE LOR15YC-1 and for 16 valve BRISK SUPER FORTE DOR15YC-1.
Japanese products are always of high quality. These spark plugs are installed on some brands of cars directly at the factory. They have a higher price, but also have corresponding quality. When purchasing, you should beware of fakes, as there are a lot of them. For engines with 8 valves with an injector, DENSO W20TT is intended, for engines with 16 valves - DENSO W20EPR-U11.
NGK is a leading manufacturer of SZ. They are installed by manufacturers on some brands of foreign cars. As a car enthusiast, I claim that spark plugs last an average of 25-30 thousand kilometers. For engines with a 16-valve injector, NGK spark plugs No. 13 BPR6ES-11 are produced.
Replace the oxygen sensor (lambda probe)
The oxygen sensor in your car is part of the exhaust system that monitors how much oxygen is not burned in the engine's combustion chamber. This sensor helps control the vehicle's fuel consumption. A malfunctioning oxygen sensor (lambda probe) means that the car computer is receiving incorrect data, which can significantly increase fuel consumption and reduce engine power. Most cars have 2 to 4 oxygen sensors. If you have a home car error scanner, then by connecting it to the car, you can easily find out which sensor needs to be replaced.
For what reason does the oxygen sensor in a car become unusable: Over time, the sensor becomes covered with a layer of used engine oil (oil soot), which reduces the accuracy of reading sensor readings for regulating the gasoline mixture and distributing optimal fuel consumption. A malfunction of the oxygen sensor in a car leads not only to increased fuel consumption, but also to an increased content of harmful CO2 substances in the exhaust.
What needs to be done: If you do not change a faulty car oxygen sensor, this can lead to failure of your car's catalyst (it may burst), which will result in expensive repairs. The cost of new catalysts is very high due to the precious alloys they contain. On some cars, there are several catalysts, the cost of which can reach up to 90,000 rubles. So don't delay replacing the sensor. Although replacing the sensor and its cost is not very small, it is not commensurate with the cost of the exhaust gas catalyst system. You can also save on replacement costs by doing it yourself. Many car manuals have detailed instructions on how to replace the oxygen sensor yourself. If you know where the oxygen sensor is located, then it will not be difficult for you to disconnect the faulty lambda probe and replace it with a new one
Remember that you cannot delay replacing this important element!
Recommended replacement intervals
The manufacturer has established clear parameters for changing the lubricant in the VAZ 2115 engine. They are determined by the mileage of the car (10,000–15,000 km) or the period of use of the lubricant (1–2 years). You need to change the engine oil depending on which indicator comes first. In other words, the car enthusiast should not wait for the speedometer to exceed the established mileage indicator. If, for example, you were unable to travel 10,000 km in a year, then it is still better to change the lubricant.
In addition to the indicated indicators for oil change intervals, many years of practice suggest a number of factors that influence more frequent replacement of engine lubricant. Without waiting for the intended mileage or time period, you have to change the engine oil taking into account specific operating conditions.
The reduction of intervals is affected by:
- intensive use of the car at high speeds;
- frequent and prolonged towing (trailer, van);
- type of oil used: it is better to change mineral water after 8,000 km, semi-synthetic – 12,000 km, full synthetic – 15,000 km;
- initially low quality lubricant;
- large amounts of gasoline entering the engine crankcase due to faulty spark plugs.
Worn spark plugs do not ensure complete combustion of fuel. Some part of it does not burn and ends up in the crankcase. Motor lubricant thins out and loses its viscous properties. This process can be signaled by the lighting of the control light associated with the pressure sensor. Then, as quickly as possible, drain the highly diluted lubricant and fill in a new one.
