How to choose good brake pads for Niva Chevrolet

A brake pad is the part of the braking system that is responsible for gradually reducing speed. The part interacts with the braking surface of the wheel or brake disc and puts pressure on it.

Timely replacement of auto parts will help you avoid an accident - if the pads are faulty, serious braking problems will arise. Let's figure out how to select and replace components for your Niva.

Problem

Comparison of high-quality and cheap pads.
Pads must do two things well. Keep the handbrake “dead” and do not “snack” in braking mode. There are a very large number of manufacturers of this spare part, but based on the price-quality criterion, I settled on LPR and Pilenga. Both manufacturers specialize in brake components and friction materials. The final and irrevocable choice was made by athletes and simply fans of racing and drifting. Practice has shown that under high loads, the “glued” shoe of the pad simply breaks off and the wheel jams. What we are talking about is immediately clear if you look at the photo of “cheap” Pilenga pads (pictured below). The shoe simply sits on the glue, and the “compound mixture” does not fall into the special protrusions. For general development, I will say that there is a third fastening option. The brake shoe is riveted to the base of the shoe and is probably the most durable option, but I have seen it either on trucks or on railroads.

How is the replacement performed?

Replacement of rear brake pads on VAZ 2123, 21213, 21214 and Niva Travel is carried out as follows:

Suspend the rear wheels and remove them:

Now you need to remove the brake drum. How to remove a drum is a story that deserves its own article, but we will try to describe it briefly. The algorithm for removing a drum on a Niva is as follows:

  1. We take a metal brush and thoroughly clean the areas where the drum meets the hub and along the edges.
  2. Spray the joints generously with WD-40.
  3. Unscrew the drum mounting bolts.
  4. Apply blows with the mallet from the back side around the entire circumference of the drum. In the photo, the outer edges of the drums are knocked down and chopped off. This happens when you hit someone not with a mallet, but with a hammer. You shouldn't do this!
  5. If you fail to knock down the drum, try heating it and then repeat the procedure. In 99% of cases, this method will work.
  6. You can cut the drum only as a last resort if you plan to replace it.

Attention! To ensure that the part is dismantled without problems next time, we recommend lubricating the area where it contacts the hub with copper grease.

After removing the drum, the following picture should open:

Pry with a screwdriver and remove the upper spring:

Remove the support bar:

Remove the pad mounts. To do this, press on the cup and turn it to release the support post:

After this, dismantle the pads and remove the handbrake lever from one of the pads. To do this, simply pull out the cotter pin and remove the lever.

Niva rear pads, specifics

Rear pads Pilenga, high-quality option
Now, using a specific example, I will show that “China” is very different. In the top photo I showed cheap pads that cost “2 kopecks”. These are the pads that are sold in 90% of cases. There are two articles in the Pilenga catalog, and they differ only in one letter. The difference in price and quality is VERY BIG. Cheap pads, this is the best illustration of the phrase “this is cheap China.” Dear ones, this is a premium product. The difference is in everything, from the packaging to the quality of the linings and the iron base of the pads themselves. Products are made in two different factories.

TOP 5 good brake pads for Niva Travel

Most often, car owners try to select pads that will not begin to creak during operation. This is very important, because ride comfort depends on it. Below is a list of good products from trusted manufacturers:

  • ROSDOT;
  • Pilenga;
  • TRW;
  • Hi-Q;
  • Brembo;

ROSDOT is familiar to us by the name of brake fluid. Therefore, it is not surprising that the company also produces pads. By the way, the pads are of quite tolerable quality and really slow down. No creaks were found during operation. The reviews are positive. The price starts from 400 rubles per set. The only drawback is the small resource.

Pilenga doesn't excel at making actuators or ball joints, but it does make good brake pads and even wheel cylinders. No beating or squeaks were detected. The price starts from 450 rubles per set.

TRW are more rigid and durable pads. But along with the rigidity, the car owner will hear squeaking in wet weather. You can live with this. The quality is better than the previous ones. Hence the price - from 650 rubles per set.

Hi-Q is a Korean company that is not the most expensive, but is of decent quality. The pads of this brand are aimed at foreign cars, but among the products there are pads for the Niva. Definitely recommended for those who do not want to save on maintenance and are looking for truly high-quality products. Price – from 900 rubles per set.

Brembo is a leader in the production of automotive brake parts. The products of this company are of high quality and are in demand for expensive foreign cars. Although there is no need for such pads in Niva Travel, this company is still suitable for those who tune the engine and are looking for ways to improve the braking system. Price – more than 1000 rubles per set.

Inside information

ATE pads, manufacturer Galfer
As in any other area, the world of spare parts has its “skeletons in the closet” that a retail customer will never know about. I will briefly tell you one of them. Several times I brought ATE pads (Germany) to order for “gourmets”. At the seminar held by this manufacturer, the Germans honestly said that they are developing mixtures (pad compound), and production is located at third-party manufacturers. Moreover, manufacturing plants are divided into several segments based on quality. For the high class, these are Textar factories (supplier of the Mercedes conveyor belt), for the low-end segment these are factories whose names will not mean anything to anyone. The ATE rear pads had “branded packaging”, and on the pads themselves there were “papers” with the name glued to them. That is, no stamping of the name or anything more serious. A Scandinavian dealer told me that the Niva front and rear pads are produced by an Italian factory, the Galfer brand. This manufacturer makes products under its own “flag”. Further practice has shown that the quality of ATE disc pads can be rated as “four”, and drum pads as “three”. But the reason is still the same, failure of the lining under heavy load.

How to tension the top spring?

Install new pads in reverse order. The hardest part will be tightening the top spring. To do this, assemble the entire mechanism, put a spring on one of the pads and install a stump under the hub, screw in the drum mounting bolt and place the metal tube vertically as follows:

To secure the pads, clamp them using wooden wedges.
Now insert a screwdriver and tighten the spring as follows:

To make the spring put on, you can push it with your fingers towards the hole. All that remains is to put the drum in place and assemble it.

This is how to change the rear pads on Niva Chevrolet and Niva Travel.

Addition

Sangsin rear pads
Since the work with Pilenga pads was over, due to the cunning of the Chinese, it was necessary to find an alternative. At the request of the services, 2 high-quality options were found. The first option is Korean pads Sangsin Brake (South Korea), Hi-Q series. Also produced in Korea. The second option is the domestic manufacturer VIS (VazInterService). There will be no special comments about these manufacturers. I will note only one thing, these are not expensive and budget options, they are excellent and good options.

How to choose front pads?

There are many manufacturers that produce linings for Niva 21213 and 21214. Among them are the following:

  • Original. Catalog number – 21213501090. Price is 556 rubles.
  • PILENGA. The price is 401 rubles.
  • BOSCH. Price: 839 rubles.
  • LUGAS. Price: 853 rubles.

BREMBO is considered to be the best manufacturer of brake pads for Niva 4x4 and Niva Chevrolet. But their price is quite high - 1123 rubles.

The choice of pads should be based on operating conditions. If the car is often used on highways or in the city, then good pads, like Lucas and Brembo, are needed, but for off-road use the original will be enough. The manufacturer of the brake discs is much more important for Niva, since the discs more often suffer from factory defects and often arrive at the store already crooked.

Markon pads

rear pads Markon
In 2022, I became acquainted with the products of the Markon brand from Yaroslavl. They make the pads themselves, at their own factory. The most important thing is that they are in the “Russian price range”. As a good difference from cheap China, we can note 9 welding points connecting the base of the block with the plane of the lining. Handbrake holds well. These pads are not anything outstanding, just a high-quality Russian spare part.

How do you know when it’s time to change the pads on your Niva?

To determine the wear of the rear brake pads on the Niva, there is a special inspection window. Drive the car into a pit or overpass, get to the rear wheels and look out the following window:

To see the pads, you need to pry and remove the rubber gasket.

The remaining thickness of the block must be at least 1.5 mm. If it is less, the linings should be replaced.

Cylinder block

The geometric parameters of the VAZ-21214 cylinder block coincide with the VAZ-21213 block. On the front engine cover there is now space for installing a crankshaft position sensor. Five classes are defined based on the deviation of the cylinder diameter. The size of each class differs from the previous one by 0.01mm. Classes are designated by letters (A, B, C, D). The cylinder block is marked on the bottom surface of the block.

The VAZ-21214 engine uses VAZ-21213 connecting rods. New bolts were used to fasten the connecting rod cover, ensuring greater reliability and accuracy of assembly.

The VAZ-21214 engine uses VAZ-21213 pistons of the original design; there are oval dimples on the bottom to reduce the compression ratio.

There are conical bolts. You can knock it inside the disk. But to push a week out of there =) Although, if they try REALLY hard so that not a single one fails..

For example, pull it off with a puller ala for brake drums, then carefully put a new one in place and press it in with nuts.

If you try without taking it apart, then yes.

And so, you put the car on supports, unscrew the ball and steering rods, the hub nut, take out the knuckle, hub, CV joint, knock out the disk... put everything back and adjust the bearings...

Suicide 1 nut that always unscrews or 3 bolts that always turn sour, which you have to install new ones every once in a while. Captain It's not very convenient to twist those bolts. Well, to me anyway. And so the head is high and normal. Again, they are secured by bending the plate. And here business is 1 minute extra.

Suicide Zhora I wrote it, with a sledgehammer on the lever. With 2-3 hits, anyone will pop up. Let’s not touch the ball anyway!

PS: 2 years of work in the service teaches you to do everything quickly, and not oh! with all sorts of nuts, washers and groovers with a diameter of 8 mm.
