For some reason, after starting the car, the “steering wheel with an exclamation mark” light comes on and stays on, and the electric power steering does not work. What could be the reason?

Symptoms of a problem

It is impossible to immediately understand why the electric power steering does not work on Kalina. However, in most cases of malfunction (EUR), a light indicating a steering wheel with an exclamation mark should light up on the instrument panel. After which, specialists from the VAZ automobile plant recommend driving at low speed to a car service center.

Why at low speed? Because in the first years of production (EUR) by the Makhachkala plant, it had the peculiarity of turning the drive wheels of the car as far as possible to the left or right and independently locking itself in this position.

The electric motor and mechanical part (EUR) rarely cause complaints, but the electrics and electronics require a detailed study of breakdowns.

The need to replace the electric power steering and the importance of a qualified approach

Replacing the electric power steering should only be done by experienced craftsmen, and if the warranty period for the Lada Kalina has not yet expired, then the best solution would be to contact the dealer network to solve the problem. If the warranty has expired, and it is difficult to collect additional material resources for qualified repair of the device, then the way out of this situation is to install the electric power steering yourself.

It should be taken into account that this procedure is quite complicated. Therefore, it is not worth carrying out without certain training and technical skills. The result of unskilled actions can be not only a complete failure of the system, but also more complex and expensive repairs. Therefore, the installation of the EUR should be done only after studying all the details and features of the vehicle’s networks.

In such a situation, the device connection diagram will become an indispensable assistant and will allow you to perform the necessary actions more clearly.

To remove a faulty electric booster, it is necessary to partially disassemble the panel located under the steering wheel and disconnect all the wires going to the device. Installing a new type of electric power steering may not be necessary, since the likelihood is quite high that after carrying out some preventive measures, the old device will work no worse than the new one.

One of the most common problems of this type is a knocking sound in the electric power steering, accompanied by a squeaking sound when the wheel itself is turned. In such a situation, EUR lubricant can solve the problem. If this step does not help, then the device requires more detailed diagnostics or complete replacement.

Installing the EUR requires some care. All wires must be connected, the device itself must be installed in its proper place, and the steering column panel must be reassembled.

Removal and installation of the electronic power steering control unit on the Lada Kalina

For this repair you will need a Phillips screwdriver, the whole job will take at least half an hour, as you will have to. After you have “got rid of it”, you can move on.

  • First, unscrew the three bolts securing the plastic trim below the panel:
  • After it is removed, the control unit becomes accessible, as shown in the photo below:
  • The next step is to disconnect all the plugs and wires, out of three. They are attached as usual using latches and are very easy to remove.
  • Now you can unscrew the two mounting bolts with a Phillips screwdriver, which are shown in the photo below:
  • After this, we take it by the upper part and lower the electric power steering control unit down, since it is still attached to the plate. It lowers simply, just apply a little effort and it will be almost at the very pedals, it is clearly shown below:
  • And there is very little left to do - unscrew the three bolts securing the power steering unit from the plate on which it is installed:
  • And holding it from below, we take it out freely. For reference, my 2011 Kalina has a used unit made in Korea. And thank God it’s not ours, the quality of the Korean assembly will be better than that of our craftsmen. At least, I never had any problems with the electric booster in 2.5 years of use.

If replacement is required, install the new module in the reverse order of removal. But it is advisable that you do not have to change this element in the electronics on Kalina, which is quite expensive, around 5,500 rubles according to some official online stores.

One of the most problematic areas of the Lada Priora is the electric power steering. That is why repairing electric power steering is a common problem faced by Priora owners. If you find that the EUR on the Priora does not work, then immediately contact a specialist or do the repairs yourself. Most often, the electric power steering of the Priora has two causes of malfunction.

Interesting fact! Electric power steering was invented and introduced into cars back in 1990 in Japan at the factories of the Toyota automobile concern.

How to determine that the EUR needs repair

The electric booster on the Priora does not work very often. It refuses to work on both new and used cars.

If a problem occurs with the electric power steering, a yellow button on the dashboard lights up, with a steering wheel with an exclamation mark on it.

This button notifies you of malfunctions or failure of the electric power steering.

You can drive the car without the help of an electric booster.

To do this, you just need to pull out the power steering fuse, which is located to the left of the steering wheel. Malfunctions of the EUR on a Priora should not scare you, since this malfunction can be eliminated even on your own.

Main malfunctions of electric power steering and their causes

The electric power steering on a Priora fails for the following reasons:

1.When the ignition is turned on, the ESD does not undergo self-monitoring and turns itself off so as not to interfere with the driver and not create an emergency situation on the road. In this case, repairs will be expensive.

2. The electric power steering on the Priora does not work due to a malfunction of the speed sensor. The EUR scans the vehicle's speed from the speedometer, which receives data from the speed sensor. When a sensor breaks down, it begins to provide incorrect information. Then the EUR turns off spontaneously, since it does not know the exact speed of the car. In this case, repair of the electric amplifier is carried out by replacing the sensor.

If the electric power steering on a Priora does not work, a flashing error on the dashboard will immediately let you know.

How to repair the EUR yourself

The electric power steering of the Priora has several causes of malfunction and one way to solve them. For repair you will need:

  1. Head for 8 and 13 mm
  2. Ratchet or crank
  3. Extension
  4. Hammer
  5. Chisel

Latest model of Kalina

Lada Kalina cars are equipped with electric power steering. Its design is very simple, it consists of one block, so even on a standard vehicle, the EUR can be installed without any problems. It contains no liquid, which means it is easy to maintain. But it is worth paying attention to the experience of foreign manufacturers who try not to install ESD in their cars. This mechanism has a special feature: it can operate at both low and high speeds. The second option is undesirable, since the slightest movement of the steering wheel can cause the car to drift into a ditch or to the side of the road.

The Lada electric power steering circuit provides for the mechanism to operate at different speeds, and when driving it either functions or turns off. The malfunction is that the EUR stops in one state. It is prohibited to use the vehicle until the breakdown is repaired. A yellow light on the dashboard will indicate the problem. It shows an exclamation mark and a steering wheel. If the malfunction lies in the power steering unit, and it is not possible to eliminate it, you should remove the fuse that is responsible for the operation of the electric amplifier. It should be taken into account that EMUR can fail not only on old, but also on new Kalinas that have not had time to be run-in.

Debriefing

The electronic control unit (ECU) for the electric power steering is mounted in a bad place, under the heater radiator

. Any leakage of this part causes the ECU to get wet, after which you will feel that the power steering is not working and the steering wheel has become heavy.

If while driving you notice that the tachometer or speedometer needle is at zero and does not move, rest assured that the ESD of your car is not working. This happens because these devices and (EUR) are activated from the same sensors.

Most often on Kalina, the speed sensor fails. Buying a new sensor and replacing it solves this problem. There are very often cases when replacing sensors does not help, (the electric power steering) still does not work. Begin to methodically probe the entire chain of wires related to the system (EUR).

Due to the constant vibration of the car and poor quality of production, connecting plugs and blocks independently break electrical circuits at the most inopportune moment.

Kalina's power steering behaves poorly during on-board voltage fluctuations

. If an old generator produces less than 30 volts instead of 15 volts, then the electronic control unit of the power steering may also refuse to work.

If you broke down on the way

In recent years, the production of Lada Kalina cars (ECU) of domestic production was replaced with Korean ones. The kind they put on Hyundai cars. After that, power steering failures became significantly less frequent. But they started installing Korean blocks on new cars

. And how many thousands of Kalinas travel all over the roads, with old electronics?

Our advice to you is, at the first opportunity, change the electronic control unit on your car to a modern one, you will be healthier.

Electric power steering for modern cars has already become an integral part of them. On the Russian market it was first installed on the Lada Kalina (VAZ 1118). The electric booster added both a lot of positive emotions and a lot of negative ones. Failure of this unit occurs quite often on the first samples. Our guest today was no exception – a car from the Lada “Kalina” family (Fig. 1).

The situation is quite typical: the client complains that sometimes the electric power steering turns off and the electric power steering warning light comes on, but after driving along some hole or rails, the electromechanical power steering (EMUR or EPS) resumes its operation.

This situation is very annoying, because not only the owner uses the car, but also his wife. It is much more problematic for a woman to turn the steering wheel without electric power assistance.

We start the car, and the electric power steering fault light actually lights up and it becomes quite difficult to turn the steering wheel. It is imperative to deal with this problem.

We connect the diagnostic scanner and connect to the EMUR control unit.

On the monitor screen we see the following error: C1044 – incorrect sequence of the rotor position sensor. What is a rotor position sensor and where is it located?

Let's take a break from our malfunction for a moment and touch on a little theory. Let's understand the EMUR device and what main parts it consists of. Let's consider all its parts separately.

Design EMUR Kalina 11186-3450008-00

  1. Steering shaft
  2. Electric motor
  3. Electronic control unit
  4. Torque sensor
  5. Rotor position sensor

We remove the EMUR. On the nameplate (Fig. 7) there is article number 11186-3450008-00 manufactured by Aviaagregat, Makhachkala.

Remove the steering wheel, steering column switches and ignition switch. To get to the torque sensor, you must first remove the electric motor. We unscrew the bracket with 4 bolts, the cardan shaft, the lock nut and the 3 bolts securing the electric motor.

Causes of EUR failure

This is a useful car unit

The main cause of the malfunction lies directly in the electric amplifier. When the ignition is turned on, a self-diagnosis of the system occurs, which the mechanism does not pass. As a result, the EUR is simply turned off, and this affects the ease of driving. Repairing the device can cost a pretty penny, so if the car is still under warranty, it is better to have it serviced by a dealer. If the amplifier fails completely, turn off the power. In this case, the torque will be received by the steering rack, bypassing the electromechanical amplifier.

Another frequently occurring malfunction is a breakdown of the speed sensor. This sensor is responsible for the operation of the electric booster at different speeds. The power steering operates at full power only when driving at very low speeds. When accelerating, the force created by the amplifier on the rack decreases. The speed sensor is responsible for this operating algorithm. It is not difficult to replace it yourself, so repairs will cost a small amount.

If the speed is higher, then the EMUR works less, since it is not needed. For this reason, on Kalina with electric power steering, control at high speed is the same as in the “standard” model without this device. If the speed sensor connected to the speedometer fails, the electric power steering control unit receives incorrect data. As a result, the power steering switches off, and the driver sees a yellow indicator on the dashboard, notifying about an error in the electric booster.

But unexpected repairs and system failure can be avoided. It is enough to undergo diagnostics in a timely manner. It will show all the problems that are present in the car components. This is the easiest and surest way to get rid of problems. If the EUR breaks down, you will have to remove it and carry out repairs or replacement. It is dismantled with the steering column. To do this, you will need a 13 mm wrench, a Phillips and a flathead screwdriver.

Before starting dismantling, it is necessary to install the wheels in a straight position and remove the negative terminal from the battery.

Warning icons on the panel

The steering wheel icon can light up in two colors. If the yellow steering wheel is on, then adaptation is required, and when a red image of the steering wheel with an exclamation mark appears, you should already be concerned about the failure of the power steering or power steering system. When the red steering wheel lights up, your steering wheel will probably become very difficult to turn.

The immobilizer icon usually blinks if the car is locked; in this case, the indicator of a red car with a white key signals the operation of the anti-theft system. But there are 3 main reasons if the immo light is constantly on: the immobilizer is not activated, if the tag on the key is not read or the anti-theft system is faulty.

The handbrake icon lights up not only when the handbrake lever is activated (raised), but also in cases where the brake pads are worn out or the brake fluid needs to be topped up/replaced. On a car with an electronic handbrake, the parking brake light may come on due to a glitch in the limit switch or sensor.

The coolant icon has several options and depending on which one is lit, draw conclusions about the problem accordingly. One red lamp with a thermometer scale indicates an increased temperature in the engine cooling system, but a yellow expansion tank with waves indicates a low coolant level in the system. But it is worth considering that the coolant lamp does not always light up at a low level; perhaps there is simply a glitch in the sensor or float in the expansion tank.

The washer icon indicates a low fluid level in the windshield washer reservoir. Such an indicator lights up not only when the level actually decreases, but also if the level sensor is clogged (the sensor contacts become coated due to poor-quality liquid), giving a false signal. On some vehicles, the level sensor is triggered when the washer fluid does not meet specifications.

The ASR icon is an Anti-Spin Regulation indicator. The electronic unit of this system works in tandem with ABS sensors. When such a light is constantly on, it means the ASR is not working. On different cars, such an icon may look different, but often in the form of an exclamation mark in a triangle with an arrow around it or the inscription itself, or in the form of a car on a slippery road.

Catalyst icon

It often lights up when the catalytic element overheats and is quite often accompanied by a sharp drop in engine power. Such overheating can occur not only due to poor cell throughput, but also if problems arise in the ignition system. When the catalyst fails, high fuel consumption will be added to the burning light.

The exhaust gases icon, according to information from the manual, indicates a malfunction in the exhaust gas purification system, but, as a rule, such a light starts to light after poor refueling or the presence of an error in the lambda probe sensor. The system registers misfires of the mixture, as a result of which the content of harmful substances in the exhaust gases increases and, as a result, the “exhaust gases” light comes on on the dashboard. The problem is not critical, but diagnostics are worth doing to find out the cause.

The exclamation mark is on - what to do?

We have noticed that new topics often appear on car forums where drivers ask about the exclamation marks that are displayed on the Lada Priora panel.

They rarely specify where it is lit and what is depicted on the icon. In this section we have collected a small FAQ

Listed below are all the exclamation marks that can light up on the instrument panel of a VAZ 2170 car. The designations for these icons are as follows:

  • The red exclamation mark in the circle (bottom) is lit. The indicator indicates that there is a problem with the vehicle's brake system. This is usually a low brake fluid level. Add it to the tank and, most likely, the sign will stop lighting. If this does not happen, then it is worth checking the system for damaged components. When igniting, the indicator lights up for 4 seconds and then goes out.
  • The red exclamation mark in the triangle/circle (above) is lit. Modern versions use a triangle instead of a circle. The indicator tells us about defects in the operation of the brake force distributor. Use extreme caution if the light comes on while driving.
  • Exclamation mark next to the steering wheel icon. When illuminated for a long time, it indicates a malfunction in the electric power steering (EPS). Like other icons, it lights up when ignited and goes out after a few seconds if the system is working properly.

New Lada: LADA Vesta family of the new model year - Official LADA website If the red triangle lights up while the engine is running, then you should diagnose the brake force distributor

Sometimes the indication is caused by faults in the electronics. Terminals are coming off, contacts are oxidized, defects in the on-board computer are a few reasons for the random appearance of icons.

To avoid damaging one of the systems, check the electronics first. To do this, it is enough to dismantle the device on the Lada Priora and see if the terminals are securely seated in the sockets.

If the brake system indicator lights up, first check the fluid level in the reservoir, and only then fill in new antifreeze.

Hello. The steering wheel light came on in the panel with a yellow exclamation mark. And when this sign lights up, the tape recorder turns off. And the sign is always off. It disappears and then appears again.

Before this I changed the brake disc and pads. They also told me to change the silent blocks. Changed the oil. What could it be?

  • The temperature sensor in the Honda Fit came on - 1 answer

This icon means that the electric power steering is disabled. You need to check the actual voltage of the generator (there may not be enough voltage), if the voltage is normal, then carry out diagnostics with a scanner, check for errors in the ECU memory, then check the connector, wires, and the power steering itself. The steering wheel should turn tightly.

Tell me, I can’t find anywhere what the icon on the instrument panel in the form of a schematic “steering wheel” with an exclamation mark means, when you insert the key into the lock and turn it lights up along with the other icons and then, like everything else, it goes out, what does it mean, Yaris sedan 2008 "American"

to grandm: You most likely have electric power steering. This is an indicator of its malfunction.

It doesn’t light up like all the icons when you turn the key, and then goes out like all the other icons, I just couldn’t find anywhere what it means, thanks for the clarification

to Messier:

Good afternoon, when you turn on the ignition, the ECU gives a command for self-diagnosis of the entire system, that’s why all the icons on your dashboard light up and after a while they go out (but not all of them! Some go out when you start the engine)

And the “steering wheel with an exclamation mark” icon itself, yellow or red, means that you have electric power steering. If it lights up while driving a car or with the engine running, then this is already bad (indicates a breakdown of the power steering system)

Drivers are notified of the presence of malfunctions in various vehicle systems using icons on the instrument panel. It is not always possible to decipher the meaning of such burning icons intuitively, since not all car enthusiasts are well versed in cars. In addition, on different cars, the graphic designation of the same icon may differ. It is worth noting that not every light on the panel only indicates a critical malfunction. The indication of light bulbs under the icons is divided into 3 groups by color:

  • Red icons indicate danger, and if any symbol lights up in this color, you should pay attention to the signal from the on-board computer in order to take measures to quickly resolve the malfunction. Sometimes they are not so critical, and it is possible to continue driving the car when such an icon on the panel is on, but sometimes it is not worth it.
  • Yellow indicators warn of a malfunction or the need to take some action to drive the car or service it.
  • The green lamps of the symbols inform about the vehicle’s service functions and their activity.

We will present a list of the most frequently asked questions and an explanation of the icons and indicators that light up on the instrument panel.

There are many badges with a car silhouette emblem. Depending on additional elements, this indicator may have different meanings.

When such an indicator lights up (a car with a key), it informs about malfunctions in the engine (often a malfunction of some sensor) or the electronic part of the transmission. To find out the exact cause, you will need to perform diagnostics.

A red car with a lock lights up, which means that there are problems in the operation of the standard anti-theft system and it will be impossible to start the car, but if this icon blinks when the car is locked, then everything is normal - the car is locked.

A yellow vehicle indicator with an exclamation mark notifies the driver of a hybrid vehicle that there is a problem with the electric drive. Resetting the error by disconnecting the battery terminal will not solve the problem - diagnostics are needed.

Everyone is used to seeing the open door icon lit when a door or trunk lid is open, but if all the doors are closed and the light on one or four doors continues to shine, then often the problem should be looked for in the door terminals (wire contacts).

The slippery road icon begins to flash when the stability control system detects a section of slippery road and is activated to prevent slipping by reducing engine power and braking the slipping wheel. There is no need to worry in such a situation. But when a key, a triangle, or a crossed out skid icon appears near such an indicator, the stabilization system is faulty.

The wrench icon pops up on the display when it’s time to perform vehicle maintenance. It is an information indicator and is reset after maintenance.

Information icons

  • The machine icon may light up differently; it happens that the “car with a wrench” icon, the “car with a lock” icon, or an exclamation mark are lit. About all these notations in order:

Fault indicators

The battery icon lights up if the voltage in the on-board network drops; often this problem is associated with a lack of battery charge from the generator, so it can also be called the “alternator icon”. On vehicles with a hybrid engine, this indicator is supplemented by the inscription “MAIN” at the bottom.

The oil icon, also known as a red oil can, indicates a drop in the oil level in the car engine. This icon lights up when you start the engine, and does not go out after a few seconds or may light up while driving. This fact indicates problems in the lubrication system or a drop in oil level or pressure. The oil icon on the panel may have a droplet or waves at the bottom; on some cars the indicator is supplemented with the inscription min, senso, oil level (yellow inscriptions) or simply the letters L and H (characterizing low and high oil levels).

The airbag icon can light up in several ways: either the red inscription SRS and AIRBAG, or “a red man wearing a seat belt,” with a circle in front of him. When one of these airbag icons lights up on the panel, the on-board computer notifies you of a malfunction in the passive safety system, and in the event of an accident, the airbags will not deploy. Read the article on the website for the reasons why the airbag sign lights up and how to fix the problem.

The exclamation mark icon may look different and its meaning will accordingly be different. So, for example, when the red (!) light is on in the circle, this indicates a malfunction of the brake system and it is advisable not to continue driving until the cause of its occurrence is determined. They can be very different: the handbrake is up, the brake pads are worn out, or the brake fluid level has dropped. A low level is precisely what poses a danger, because the reason may not only be in heavily worn pads, as a result of which, when you press the pedal, the fluid disperses throughout the system, and the float gives a signal about a low level, the brake hose may be damaged somewhere, and this is much more serious. Although, very often the exclamation mark lights up if the float (level sensor) is faulty or shorted, and then it simply lies. On some cars, the exclamation mark is accompanied by the words “BRAKE”, but this does not change the essence of the problem.

An exclamation mark can also light up in the form of an “attention” sign, both on a red and yellow background. When the yellow “attention” sign lights up, it informs about a malfunction in the electronic stabilization system, and if it is on a red background, it simply warns the driver about something, and, as a rule, explanatory text is displayed on the dashboard display or combined with other informative text designation.

The ABS icon may have several display options on the dashboard, but regardless of this, it means the same thing on all cars - a problem has occurred in the ABS system, and that the anti-lock wheel system is not working at the moment. You can find out the reasons why ABS does not work in our article. In this case, movement can be made, but there is no need to rely on the ABS to activate; the brakes will operate as usual.

The ESP icon may either light up intermittently or stay on constantly. A light with this inscription indicates problems with the stabilization system. The Electronic Stability Program indicator, as a rule, lights up for one of two reasons - either the rotation angle sensor has failed, or the brake light sensor (aka “frog”) has died for a long time. Although, there can be a more serious problem, for example, the brake system pressure sensor is covered.

The engine icon, some drivers may call it the “injector icon” or check, may glow yellow when the engine is running. It informs about the presence of engine errors and malfunctions of its electronic systems. To determine the reason for its appearance on the dashboard display, self-diagnosis or computer diagnostics are performed.

The glow plug icon may light up on the dashboard of a diesel car; the meaning of such an indicator is exactly the same as the “check” icon on gasoline cars. When there are no errors in the electronic unit’s memory, the spiral icon should go out after the engine warms up and the glow plugs are turned off.

This material is informative for most car owners. And although absolutely all possible icons of all existing cars are not presented here, you will be able to independently understand the main symbols of the car’s dashboard, and will not sound the alarm when you see that the icon on the panel is on again.

Almost all possible indicators on the instrument panel and their meanings are listed below:

The main elements on the dashboard of a car are the tachometer, speedometer, fuel level and coolant temperature. In modern cars, the instrument panel has a large number of different indicators informing the driver about the condition of the car and its possible malfunctions.

In this article we will talk about the indicator in the form of a red exclamation mark on the Lada Kalina car, namely, you will get the answer to why the red exclamation mark lights up in the car and so frightens drivers who do not know its purpose.

Lights indicating a malfunction

Now let's look at the indicators that indicate problems.

The red battery symbol lights up on the control panel if there is no battery charge from the generator unit. In the case of hybrid cars, the appearance of such a light will be accompanied by the inscription Main.
A lamp in the form of an oil can informs the driver that there is a lack of motor fluid in the power unit. The symbol always appears when the ignition is activated and disappears after the engine is started. If the indicator lights up after starting the internal combustion engine, then you need to check the oil level in the engine, all leaks must be eliminated.
Malfunction of the airbags. You need airbags; if an emergency or collision occurs, then most likely the airbags will not deploy.
This symbol can be made in different variations. If the color of its glow is red, then there are malfunctions in the functioning of the brake system, so the system must be checked before driving. The lamp may come on as a result of a lack of brake fluid in the reservoir or worn out pads. It is possible that the reason for the appearance of the lamp is due to a sensor failure.
The on-board computer detected malfunctions in the functioning of the ABS. If there is ice on the roads, then the problems must be corrected, since such driving can be very dangerous. The brake will function, but the ABS system will not work.
The Check Engine light comes on when the electronic control unit detects a malfunction in the operation of the power unit. There can be a huge number of reasons in this case, so you need to do computer diagnostics.
Faulty glow plugs - this symbol is only available in diesel vehicles. If the light is constantly on, you need to check the ignition system.

If you are faced with a problem with the dashboard not working, then the video below will allow you to familiarize yourself with the repair process using the example of a Volkswagen car (the video was filmed by the altevaa TV channel).

Hi all! Today I want to raise a rather current topic that, judging by the questions on the forums and the number of requests in search engines, worries a large number of people. I want to talk about a phenomenon where when you press the brake pedal, an exclamation mark on the dashboard lights up.

I will try to give a comprehensive answer to this question and explain why this happens and what kind of damage may be involved. Go!

Let me start, perhaps, with the fact that if a lamp (!) lights up on the panel, it means something is wrong with the brake system. As a rule, this indicator signals a low level of brake fluid (BF) in the system. As you can imagine, faulty brakes are no joke and the problem needs to be addressed. I’ll say more, if anyone doesn’t know, OPERATING A CAR WITH A BURNING INDICATOR (!) IS PROHIBITED!

Since you don’t know what’s wrong and what caused this error to appear on the dashboard.

What does the exclamation mark mean?

The illumination of a red exclamation mark on the instrument panel informs the driver that the fluid level in the brake system is insufficient. When this sign lights up on the instrument panel, it is necessary to stop the car as quickly as possible, check the level of brake fluid in the reservoir, as well as the brake line for leaks.

The fluid level should be between the minimum and maximum marks; if there is not enough liquid in the tank, it must be added.

If, during inspection, leaks of brake fluid are found from the fittings of hoses and tubes or other connections, it is prohibited to continue driving.

Why may TJ levels decrease?

The reasons for the decrease in level may be the following factors:

  • Brake fluid leak;
  • Pad wear;
  • Damage to the fuel oil level sensor;

Brake fluid leak

This problem can occur after driving on deep snow or gravel roads, where brake line tubes and hoses are at risk of damage. Leaks are also possible at the connections of the calipers and the main brake cylinder.

Pad wear

When the pads are worn out, the caliper piston comes out of the seat much more than with new pads, therefore, the volume of fluid required to fill the space increases, and the fluid level in the reservoir drops.

When replacing the pads with new ones, the level should be restored to normal.

Damage to the fuel level sensor

This reason occurs quite often. The cap of the brake fluid reservoir contains a sensor that measures the fluid level; when it drops, the contacts on the sensor close and the lamp on the instrument panel lights up in the form of a red exclamation mark, informing that the brake fluid level is low.

Quite often it happens that the fuel fluid level is within acceptable ranges, but the indicator still lights up, this indicates a malfunction of the level sensor or its power circuit.

Checking the fuel oil level sensor

Checking it is quite simple; to do this, you need to unscrew the brake reservoir cap without disconnecting it from the connector. Then forcefully raise the “float”, then the lamp should go out; if this does not happen, then most likely the problem is in the sensor.

The next step is to check the control circuit. To do this, disconnect the sensor from the connector and insert a jumper into the plug, closing the two contacts together. When closed, the lamp should light up.
