Cleaning the throttle valve of a VAZ 2110: what you need to know

The throttle valve is an integral part of almost any car. The domestic masterpiece represented by the VAZ 2110 is no exception.

It is noteworthy that there is no place for a car without a throttle valve, but it is this valve that often causes a lot of trouble to the car owner.

Most often, problems with the throttle manifest themselves in the form of incorrect operation of the gas pedal, strange behavior of revolutions when accelerating or driving on the road. The first thing you need to do is check if everything is fine with the damper.

Unit design

Operating principle of the throttle valve

The throttle valve's job is to supply oxygen, which the engine needs to operate properly. It is with the help of this valve that the air supply to the engine is regulated during combustion of the fuel mixture. Air enters the cylinders from the environment when the valve opens, having previously been cleaned through the vehicle's air filter. The flap turns, opening the way for air, by pressing the gas pedal.

Operation of the throttle valve VAZ 2110

At the same time, the number of revolutions on the tachometer increases. In the VAZ 2110 car, the throttle control is electronic, which allows you to perform more useful work than with a mechanical type. The VAZ 2110 throttle valve is located under the hood of the car, in its central part. As a rule, it is located between the intake manifold and the air filter; all these devices interact with each other. In some assemblies of the VAZ 2110 car, it can be located on the passenger side of the car.

Several sensors also take part in the operation of the throttle valve. The main one is the air flow meter sensor. It is he who electronically controls the air supply to the engine. If there are problems with the throttle valve, it is most often the cause of failures. Also, one of the common reasons for poor operation of the throttle valve in a VAZ 2110 car is partial or complete contamination of the valve. This happens due to untimely replacement of the air filter and affects the operation of the engine - of course, for the worse.

Throttle valve of a VAZ 2110 car

Engine performance directly depends on the amount of air that comes with the fuel mixture. If the air supply is limited, the fuel mixture will not be enough for complete combustion.

Throttle valve, potentiometer, idle speed controller

Gasoline is used as fuel in the internal combustion engines of VAZ-2109, VAZ-2110 and other models produced or produced by the Volzhsky Automobile Plant. However, in the cylinders it does not burn on its own, but in a mixture with air. The throttle valve is needed to prepare the air-fuel mixture in the required proportions. It is located behind the air filter in front of the intake manifold.

Basically, the throttle valve is an air valve that regulates the amount of air entering the engine. The principle of its operation is to change the cross-section of the air channel. When it is fully open, air flows freely into the intake manifold. To determine the opening angle, a throttle position sensor is used, which is connected to the engine control unit. Based on the signals transmitted by the sensor, the control unit issues a command to increase the amount of fuel injected, the working mixture is enriched, and the engine operates at maximum speed.

The smaller the throttle opening angle, the less air enters the manifold, and the lower the engine speed.

Cleaning the throttle body - when to start?

For every VAZ 2110 owner, sooner or later there comes a time when it is necessary to clean the throttle valve yourself. One of the characteristic signs of its contamination is unstable engine operation. At idle, the engine may run unevenly, and in some cases even stall. When trying to start the engine, delays may occur.

Cleaning the throttle valve VAZ 2110

During normal engine operation, the number of revolutions on the tachometer in operating mode should be 900 rpm, the value should be stable. Floating speed on the tachometer, unusual sounds from the exhaust pipe - all these are also signs of a dirty valve. When driving the car at high speed, fuel consumption will noticeably increase; when driving at low speed, jerking is possible. In both cases, the car engine will work under load.

The valve becomes dirty due to oil dust and various gases. They settle on the throttle valve and can be seen with the naked eye. Since the type of throttle valve device is not complicated, you can then do the cleaning yourself without leaving the garage. To clean the VAZ 2110 damper, you need a standard set of tools, as well as any injector or carburetor cleaner - due to their chemical properties, they are all suitable for this task.

Dirty throttle valve VAZ 2110

The car's service book states that the damper should be cleaned once every 35,000 km. As practice shows, it is better to perform this action more often, at least once every 15,000–20,000 km. Cleaning the throttle body won't take much of your time, but it will significantly increase engine power. Experienced drivers constantly monitor the condition of the valve, and even if there are no problems with the engine, they remove deposits on the surface of the valve.

Throttle assembly update result

It is worth noting the appearance of some problems in the operation of the engine on the VAZ 2112 after installing a throttle valve with a diameter of 52 mm.
The reason for this is a violation of the fuel-air ratio, which leads to incorrect operation of the ECU and engine. After this, many people prefer to use the ECU firmware editor, but there is no way to return the old throttle assembly to its place. Although the problem could have been simple contamination of the old regulator. After updating the firmware, a decrease in fuel consumption of 0.5 liters is noticed - maybe not significant, but still a plus. As a result, we can say that simply installing a throttle valve with a larger diameter will not give a significant increase in power and other indicators. Only in combination with a firmware update and other minor engine tuning will the effect be noticeable. However, the validity of these actions in individual cases must be taken into account. After all, even on forced engines there can be a damper of standard sizes (for example, 46 mm), which is enough for the correct operation of the air intake system.

Superficial intervention or deep cleaning?

There are two ways to clean the throttle valve. The first is a superficial intervention that does not require complete removal of the entire device. And the second is a complete cleaning, which must be performed in cases where your car’s engine is not working well.

To perform the first type of cleaning, you will need a pre-purchased cleaning product and a fine brush. Open the hood, remove the corrugation, it goes from the air filter housing to the throttle valve. You will see a valve - it is easy to recognize by its completely round shape. Treat it with a chemical and let it sit for a few minutes, then remove the dirt with a brush. If necessary, use a rag. Repeat the procedure several more times until the flapper valve turns a bright color. This work can be carried out once every 3–5 thousand kilometers, fortunately, it does not take much time.

Removing the corrugation from the throttle valve

For more detailed cleaning of the throttle valve in a VAZ 2110, you need to completely remove the entire injector mechanism. It is also recommended to replace the gasket and O-ring, which are included in the throttle valve repair kit, which is easy to buy at any auto store. Before starting cleaning work, remove the terminals from the battery.

Then disconnect all air pipes connected to the throttle body. After this, remove the fastenings of the throttle cable and unscrew the throttle valve itself. It is attached to two bolts that are screwed into the engine housing. Electronic sensors must be disconnected carefully to avoid damaging them.

Disconnecting the air pipes of the throttle assembly

After that, take a chemical and treat the entire body and all the grooves of the throttle body. Do this until you completely get rid of the dirt. You can also clean the air flow meter sensor. To do this, carefully treat its hairs with a cleaning product and remove the dirt with a brush. Give the entire device time to dry completely before reassembling. Do not forget to change the gasket and ring, which are located in the corrugation. Also pay attention to whether all air pipes are intact. Perhaps some require replacement with new ones. For maximum effect, you can also replace the air filter.

Let's sum it up

Taking into account the above information, it becomes clear that the throttle valve is an important element of a fuel injection engine. At the same time, it is a mistake to believe that the throttle assembly does not require regular maintenance.

Moreover, although the manual recommends cleaning the damper every 35 thousand kilometers, it is important to make allowances for the operating conditions of the vehicle. As a rule, even in cities, roads in the CIS countries are not clean, and the air is quite heavily polluted. If a car drives on dirt roads, air pollution increases significantly.

It should also be noted that VAZ 2110 car owners often do not install the best air filters. The result is active and rapid contamination of not only the filters themselves, but also the throttle assembly. For these reasons, it is optimal to change the air filter every 15 thousand km, and also clean the throttle valve (at least superficially) every time it is replaced.

It is also necessary every 30-40 thousand km. completely remove the throttle assembly, deep clean it, at the same time clean the sensors and electrical connectors, check the condition of the corrugations, pipes, etc.

Finally, we note that you need to constantly monitor the condition of the throttle and regardless of whether there are any problems with the engine. This approach will allow not only to achieve stable operation of the internal combustion engine, not to lose engine power and not to consume excess fuel, but also to increase the service life of the power unit. “Turn the Engine” is dedicated to one of the greatest blessings of civilization - the piston internal combustion engine. Signs of trouble

The problem with many VAZ 2110s is that until a serious increase in speed, the car remains, as motorists say, in a “sluggish” state, it does not pull, and becomes more or less playful only when the revolutions reach approximately the 3000 mark.

This is very often associated with improper throttle operation. Moreover, the main culprit may be the manufacturer, but more on that later. And now - about some more signs of malfunction:

  • engine speed fluctuates;
  • there is no clear response from the car when you press the gas pedal;
  • when changing gears, jerking can be observed;
  • vibration is observed when the car is idling;
  • stalls when changing speed;
  • The engine does not start well if the car is already warmed up and then turned off.

Troubleshooting

Before taking any action, you need to check the VAZ 2114 throttle valve for possible problems.

In order to accurately diagnose a malfunction or incorrect operation of the throttle, there are characteristic signs inherent to it. These are:

  • Instability of engine speed at idle, their unreasonable increase;
  • Periodically stalling engine;
  • Jerking while moving;
  • The discrepancy between the effort when squeezing the gas pedal and the final result (the proper reaction from the engine does not occur, power does not increase, the car does not pick up speed or does it late).
  • Noticeable increase in fuel consumption in standard driving mode.

Please note that problems may be caused by:

  1. The TPS sensor is faulty, resulting in the wrong amount of fuel being supplied to the system.
  2. Malfunction of the idle speed controller.

Therefore, sometimes it is advisable to check these important elements of the system.

Correction of a factory miscalculation

It is quite common for a throttle assembly to come out of the factory with something that cannot even be called a defect, but can still be attributed to design errors. In theory, air should flow into the space behind the throttle, for which a channel of approximately 2.5 mm is specially made.

But the whole problem is that this channel was pressed against the wall of the receiver, thus blocking the possibility of air flow. A slight modification of the throttle assembly can help in this case.

This material will help you install engine crankcase protection yourself: https://vazweb.ru/desyatka/dvigatel/zaschita-dvigatelya.html

Bored channel for air flow in the throttle

To do this, just take a file and use it to make a small groove in the indicated place. 2 - 3 mm will be enough. But before doing this, it is necessary to remove the throttle.

On a VAZ 2110, the throttle assembly is removed in the following sequence:

  1. Disconnect the connectors of the sensor that regulates the position of the throttle valve, its drive cable and the XX regulator;
  2. We partially drain the coolant;
  3. Next is the removal of the air hose located on the body of the mass air flow sensor. Why do you just need to loosen the clamp;
  4. We also loosen the clamps: where the throttle pipe is attached to the air hose; where the hose of the 2nd crankcase exhaust circuit is attached to the cylinder head cover pipe. We remove the connected hoses - the air and 2nd crankcase ventilation circuits;
  5. Having loosened the clamp, remove the hose of the 1st crankcase gas exhaust circuit from the throttle assembly fitting;
  6. Having loosened the clamps, we remove the hoses supplying and discharging coolant;
  7. You will need a wrench with a 13mm head, with which you need to unscrew the nuts securing the throttle assembly to the receiver on a VAZ 2110;
  8. It is now possible to remove the throttle assembly from the studs;
  9. It remains to remove the sealing gasket and, if your VAZ 2110 has a system that traps gasoline vapors, disconnect the hose for purging the adsorber.

Even if the purpose of removing the throttle was to modify it, still do not forget that for stable operation it also needs periodic cleaning. To be honest, there is nothing complicated in this procedure, but it will help the engine run better, which is quite important.

For cleaning you will need:

  • short and long screwdrivers;
  • toothbrush (soft, or just old);
  • cotton buds;
  • cleaning agent;
  • rubber or cotton gloves.

For cleaning to give the desired result, it must be carried out very carefully. First, you can go through all the cavities with a toothbrush, at the same time cleaning the idle speed control (it must also be removed). Further, more delicate, cleaning is done with cotton swabs. Pay special attention to the area where the throttle valve is located and the place where the XX regulator fits.

Please note that cleaning the crankcase ventilation duct with conventional means is not possible, but it can be easily done using the foot pump available in each trunk. The diameter of the fitting is similar to the wheel one, you just need to add cleaning agent and pump your foot several times.

If you have problems mentioned at the beginning that started recently, cleaning should fix them. If there were problems from the beginning, do not forget about improvements. Sometimes only replacing the throttle assembly helps.

Tuning by replacement

The standard valve (throttle assembly) usually has a diameter of 46 millimeters; many fans of various tunings decide to replace this part with an alternative one:

  • VAZ 2112 throttle valve 52 has a larger diameter (there are also valves of 54 and 56 millimeters)
  • Is there any benefit from such tuning?
  • In various online stores they often offer to replace the standard 46 mm throttle body (DU) and install 52, 54 or 56 mm
  • The product description says that an enlarged throttle body (also known as the throttle body) leads to a decrease in air flow speed, which improves the performance of the air intake system
  • The effect of installing an alternative damper will be clearly visible when using a zero-resistance filter in the system
  • We recommend installing a unit with a diameter of 52mm, because... the diameter of its air inlet for a standard receiver is 53mm

The valve is standard (standard) on the left and new (increased flow diameter) on the right

  • In order to install a remote control of a different diameter, as a rule, nothing needs to be modified
  • The maximum necessary action is a small trimming of the gasket (this is most often necessary when installing a 56mm throttle assembly)

The following positive effects are noticed after such an installation:

  • The car becomes more agile
  • Problems with idle speed disappear
  • The gas pedal also becomes more responsive.

Installation disadvantages:

  • Fuel consumption increases, although many believe that the BC gives incorrect readings and consumption does not change
  • Some owners see the effect exclusively on 16-valve engines

The picture we described above may appear completely different:

  • All the positive effect that many people notice when installing a larger diameter remote control usually appears because the old remote control already needed cleaning and naturally the motor was not working correctly
  • After installing a (clean) new remote control, the engine starts working in its normal mode, this seems like a “new breath”
  • In other words, all the described effects appear after regular cleaning of the remote control.
  • And besides this, after replacing the remote control, with a larger diameter you will have new problems with the operation of the motor that did not exist before
  • This is due to a violation of the ratio of gasoline and air, which the ECU is no longer able to correct.
  • And instead of simply returning the remote control to the standard diameter, the owners are recommended to replace the firmware, the price of which is higher, but there is no point
  • There is also an opinion that a remote control with a diameter of 52, 54 or 56 millimeters is a completely useless thing, and only installed in combination with other engine tunings produces a noticeable effect
  • It remains unclear whether this effect is caused by remote control or other modifications to the engine
  • After all, if on a turbo engine with a power of no more than 200 horsepower, standard 46mm dampers are left and their work is quite enough

Throttle valve for VAZ 2110

What is a throttle valve in a car? This is a regulator of the patency of the channel cross-section, which changes the amount of medium, gas or liquid flowing in the channels. It is part of the design of the engine intake system. The throttle valve is an element without which the air will not be adjusted to form a fuel-air mixture, that is, the car will not operate uninterruptedly.

At its core, it is a valve, which is also called a throttle. The design consists of the following elements: the throttle itself is presented in the form of a round plate; it can rotate 90 degrees, that is, at a right angle, fixing the closing and opening of the flow. The body of the device has a complex mechanism, since it is part of the cooling system.

The throttle valves on different types of carburetors are different:

  • if the carburetor has a falling current or rapid discharge, then the damper will be in the form of a rigid plate;
  • horizontal type carburetor - vertical gate valve;
  • in the fuel injection system - represented as a separate unit.

The types of damper drives are: electric, mechanical. It is possible to imagine an electric throttle only in modern car models. Distinctive features characteristic of this type of drive: idle speed is adjustable, there is no mechanics between the damper and the pedal. Thanks to the use of such a drive, it is possible to influence the rotating element without any effort.

To increase the reliability and strength of the element, a module with two sensors is installed. With mechanics, things are completely different. This type of drive is found only in budget cars. There is a connection between the damper and the pedal through a metal cable. We will also warn drivers that if the position of the flap valve and its position sensor is violated, this will entail the following: the speed will fluctuate, the idle speed will increase, the car will stall when the gear is in neutral, and fuel consumption will increase. If a malfunction does occur, a signal on the dashboard will definitely let you know.

Idle speed

The principle is to supply the required amount of air into the fuel rail to create the mixture in the correct proportion. Air enters through the filter into the throttle valve of the VAZ-2110. When idling, a small amount of air passes through the valve to maintain crankshaft speed at 750 rpm. The damper is completely closed at this moment. As soon as the driver presses the accelerator pedal, the damper opens (the angle of rotation of its axis is recorded by a position sensor and sends a signal to the electronic control unit).

Evidence of pollution

Don't forget that the throttle valve can become dirty. Signs of this are the following criteria: the engine begins to stall, lose speed, the engine starts with difficulty, at the minimum speed of the car, jerking begins. Always check the throttle assembly for causes of problems. Damper contamination occurs in many cases. Settlement occurs on the walls of the mechanism, entering the assembly due to ventilation of gases. Another reason is poor filter performance.

Prevention of use

The throttle valve itself is designed for the entire life of the vehicle, that is, it does not have a replacement frequency. Therefore, it is replaced when the unit fails due to mechanical failure, failure of the entire engine, or other critical reasons. More often than not, the throttle position sensor mentioned above fails. Accordingly, it must be replaced.

For normal engine operation, the throttle valve must be periodically cleaned and reconfigured. This can be done either when the above signs of breakdown appear, or simply periodically so as not to bring it to such a state. Depending on the quality of the fuel used and the operating conditions of the vehicle, it is recommended to clean the throttle valve when changing the engine oil, that is, every 15...20 thousand kilometers.

Step-by-step cleaning instructions

If the damper does get dirty, it doesn’t matter; with the help of several cleaning steps, the car’s operation will be restored. Before cleaning, you must remove the throttle assembly according to the following instructions:

  • remove the corrugation;
  • turn off the power supply to the sensors;
  • push out the “weight” that secures the pedal cable;
  • disconnect the coolant pipe;
  • remove the ventilation hose; unscrew the assembly fastening;
  • Unscrew the idle speed control.

To clean mechanisms, special products are required, in most cases aerosol cans. The best solution for this task is a carburetor or brake cleaner.

General characteristics

If we consider the throttle assembly as a whole, it will consist of several parts:

  • coolant outlet and supply pipes;
  • ventilation system tube;
  • a sensor that controls the position of the damper;
  • RXX;
  • the damper itself;
  • condensation system pipe.

Knowing the throttle structure and what it looks like is necessary for cleaning. This unit is one of the most important components of the intake system. When the throttle operates correctly, a sufficient amount of air is sent to the engine, which is used to enrich the fuel mixture. The damper is controlled by an electronic gas pedal, which, when pressed, changes the opening angle.

This mechanism is located between the intake manifold and the air filter. Getting to it for preventive cleaning will not be difficult even for someone who has just become a car enthusiast.

To work, you will need to prepare tools and materials for cleaning.

Description and performance check of the VAZ 2110 throttle valve

Let's look at the example of the throttle on a VAZ 2110 car. The position of the throttle valve on a VAZ 2110 is the engine compartment. The type of drive in this car will be mechanical, we discussed this earlier. The throttle position sensor itself on a VAZ 2110 car is located in the throttle assembly; it is popularly called the “right foot sensor”.

It is used to measure the amount of throttle opening and transmits information to the car's engine block. The sensor operates on the principle of a conventional resistor. A resistor is an element of an electrical circuit that has a certain or variable resistance. Sensors can be contact or non-contact. In the car it is located on the throttle pipe and connected to the damper. The main danger is that if it malfunctions, information regarding the throttle position will be distorted.

The VAZ 2110 throttle valve and injector are important components responsible for supplying air and fuel to the engine cylinders. Many owners of this car model have a desire to check the functionality of the VAZ 2110 throttle sensor. And more than once this situation has baffled drivers. Now we will tell you about this; with the ignition on, you need to use a voltmeter to check the “minus” and the contact of the voltage element.

The reading should not be higher than 0.7 V. Then open the damper, turn the plastic sector and measure the voltage again. Now the sensor should show at least 4 V. With the ignition on, pull out the connector, check the resistance, turn the sector and see how the device readings behave. If they jump, then urgently replace the sensor, preferably with a non-contact one. Motorists say it will last much longer.

Having checked many sites for selling auto parts and comparing the cost of the throttle, we can say that the average price of a VAZ 2110 throttle body is 2 thousand rubles, or even higher. When purchasing this part for your car, do not forget to consult with the seller.

Operation of the sensor system

The air flow sensor is of great importance. It allows you to estimate the amount of air that enters the fuel rail through the throttle assembly. Depending on the position of the VAZ-2110 throttle valve, the volume of air passing through it changes. But the air cannot be weighed, felt, touched. Therefore, a more cunning way was invented to estimate its quantity - by heating a platinum filament.

When the ignition is turned on, a platinum filament in the mass air flow sensor heats up (this is why the sensors have a high cost - more than 2000 rubles). The electronic control unit contains the reference temperature of the filament. When air passes through the sensor pipe, the thread cools by several degrees (due to airflow). The control unit records the difference and, knowing all the geometric dimensions of the sensor, calculates the approximate amount of air passing into the fuel rail per unit time.

Remote control position sensor

The remote control position sensor can be contact (supplied as standard) or non-contact. Most often, a non-contact TPS is installed after removing the old one and discovering that it will not be possible to restore it efficiently.

This sensor on the VAZ 2110 is located directly on the throttle pipe, attached to the throttle axis.

The following symptoms indicate that the VAZ 2110 TPS needs to be checked and it needs to be cleaned (and possibly replaced):

  • “Floating” idle speed;
  • When the gas pedal is pressed during acceleration, the car moves jerkily;
  • Increased fuel consumption compared to before;
  • It is possible (but not certain) that the "Check Engine" light on the dashboard will light up.

The main danger is that if the TPS malfunctions, it will distort information regarding the position of the damper, then your VAZ will be guaranteed interruptions in engine operation, plus excessive fuel consumption.

Throttle assembly VAZ 2110 | VAZ 2111 | VAZ 2112 - removal and installation

RECOMMENDATION The throttle assembly on VAZ 2110, VAZ 2111, VAZ 2112 vehicles can be removed without draining the coolant. This will require two M10 bolts as plugs.

WARNING Start work only after the engine has cooled down to a safe temperature (not higher than 45°C).

Removing the throttle assembly

1. We prepare the car for repairs (see paragraph 2a Preparing the car for maintenance and repair). 2. Remove the wire terminal from the negative terminal of the battery (see paragraph 2 Battery - removal and installation). 3. Remove the decorative trim of the engine (see Decorative trim of the engine - removal and installation). 4. By unscrewing the expansion tank cap, we relieve excess pressure from the engine cooling system. 5. Remove the air supply hose to the throttle valve. 6. Disconnect the throttle valve drive cable from the sector (see paragraphs 3 and 4 Throttle valve - replacing the drive cable) 7. Disconnect the wire connector from the TPS (throttle position sensor). 8. Disconnect the wire connector from the idle air control (see paragraphs 2 and 3 Idle air control (IAC) - check and replacement). 9. Use a Phillips screwdriver to loosen the clamps securing the crankcase ventilation system hose and two coolant supply hoses. . and adsorber hose.

14. While holding the throttle assembly in a raised position, remove the coolant supply hoses from the throttle body fittings. 15. Insert M10 bolts into the hoses. To prevent them from falling out, tighten the hose clamps.

Throttle assembly installation

We install the throttle assembly and all the removed parts on the car in reverse order.

useful tips for motorists

Checking the functionality of the sensor

With the ignition on, use a voltmeter to check the VAZ TPS voltage between the “minus” and the slider contact (it should not exceed 0.7 V). Open the damper by turning the plastic sector and measure the voltage again.

This time the sensor should output at least 4 V or a little more. With the ignition off, you need to pull out the connector and check the resistance between any terminal and the slider contact. As you turn the sector, watch whether the voltmeter readings change smoothly.

If they “jump,” then a replacement is necessary, preferably with a non-contact TPS.

As evidenced by the practice of a huge number of VAZ car owners, a contactless sensor will last much longer, it does not require additional adjustments, modifications, and inspection will be needed much less often.

Do-it-yourself cleaning of the throttle valve on a VAZ 2110

The throttle valve is an integral part of almost any car. The domestic masterpiece represented by the VAZ 2110 is no exception.

It is noteworthy that there is no place for a car without a throttle valve, but it is this valve that often causes a lot of trouble to the car owner.

Most often, problems with the throttle manifest themselves in the form of incorrect operation of the gas pedal, strange behavior of revolutions when accelerating or driving on the road. The first thing you need to do is check if everything is fine with the damper.

Unit design

In simple terms, without terminology unnecessary for most motorists, the throttle valve is nothing more than the gas pedal of your car.

By pressing or releasing this pedal, you thereby close or, on the contrary, open this damper.

The device provides a path for additional air to enter. When you press the gas pedal to the floor as much as possible, you open the throttle fully, so the engine speed increases.

Location

Throttle position sensor (TPS). Replacing TPS

How to clean the throttle valve yourself Thanks to the fact that in our century cars are equipped with injection engines and have, so to speak, brains. They are equipped with many different sensors that are responsible for most processes. This is of course very good and convenient, BUT... If at least one fails, the operation of the entire car is disrupted, and this is what affects: consumption, power, dynamics, etc. In this section we will look at what a throttle position sensor (TPS) is, what it looks like, what it does, and how to change it (there is nothing complicated about it).

Type of sensor and its functions. So, this sensor is shown in the photo:

Why is TPS needed? Everything is simple here, it is needed to control the injectors (supply more or less fuel), depending on how much the throttle valve is open.

Like all parts of a car, this sensor has a service life and tends to fail. Of course, you can go to a car repair shop and pay extra money. In general, replacing the TPS is not a difficult task and you can do everything yourself; if you have all the tools, you will spend a maximum of 5 minutes.

This sensor can be classified as a variable resistor - it has three contacts: 1) Power (5 V) 2) Ground 3) Controller

By pressing down the gas pedal, the TPS looks at the output voltage and determines the quality of the mixture, taking into account the position of the DPS (angle).

If this sensor fails, the mass air flow sensor takes over its responsibilities.

TPS malfunctions. 1) The first thing you can feel when the TPS breaks down is a floating speed. Moreover, there are situations when the engine runs stably, and then, for no reason at all, it starts accelerating (even when the car is warming up). 2) The next trouble is the car jerking at start-up or at low engine speeds. Moreover, at 1500 rpm you already need to switch to a lower gear, otherwise it seems that the car is about to stall. 3) The dynamics leave much to be desired (well, there’s no need to describe anything here, I think you’ll feel it for yourself in your car). 4) When you move at speed and switch off the gear, the engine may stall (not a very common occurrence, but it happens a couple of times per 100 km, or even more often). 5) The check light comes on 6) The consumption increases (if during normal operation of the car the average consumption on a VAZ 2110 is 7-7.5 liters, then when the sensor is not working it reaches 10 liters).

I think we've sorted out the nasty stuff. Now let's move on to diagnosing the sensor, because the above things can happen for other reasons. First of all, measure the voltage at the output of the slider (the ignition should be on). To do this, we throw a voltmeter to the contact of the slider and to the minus. A sensor malfunction will be indicated by a voltage greater than 0.7 volts. We do all this at idle speed. To be convincing, you can open the damper completely (“turn it on”), the output voltage should be less than 4 volts. Plus, you can check the resistance. Let's use an ohmmeter, connect it to the output and to the power supply. If you slowly change the throttle angle, the resistance should also change smoothly. If you have identified one of the fault points, then you need to replace the TPS. It is not expensive: 150-400 rubles, depending on the company and quality, I would not recommend saving.

Replacing the sensor. I think even novice car enthusiasts can replace the TPS, because all that is required is to unscrew 2 bolts. Here you may need a screwdriver with a short handle; with a long one it won’t be convenient - you won’t be able to get it.

We unscrew the bolts, remove the sensor, pay attention, there is a gasket there. When replacing the sensor, it is also better to replace it. We put on the gasket

We put the new sensor in place (nothing can be confused here). We tighten the bolts to the end, but don’t be too heroic, since our sensor is plastic and can burst

Snap the wiring harness block. That's it, the repair is complete, there is no need to configure anything additional. The only BUT. If your check light comes on during a breakdown, then when replacing the TPS, you need to reset the error, otherwise the sensor may continue to work incorrectly (since this error is stored in the brain). However, do not rush to computer diagnostics. Everything is much simpler. You can reset the check error yourself.

Debugg

If you notice that the throttle has begun to perform its direct duties poorly, do not rush to go to a service station and hand over your money.

The problem with the damper can often be solved with your own hands.

Most often, a problem with the throttle occurs due to contamination, which leads to impaired functionality. To correct the situation, simply clean the element.

When Cleaning Is Required

The practice of "tens" car owners shows that on these cars the throttle becomes clogged literally just a few years after the start of active use of the car.

The biggest “pests” for the damper are particles of oil, dust and gases coming from the engine crankcase.

When the engine is running, dust mixes with air and oil, forming a kind of mixture that enters the throttle valve. Over time, this substance sticks to surfaces and accumulates on the idle rod.

Soon the thermal gap becomes covered with dirt, and access through the idle air regulator channel is significantly deteriorated. If you do nothing, the engine will begin to work incorrectly, the dynamics will drop, and the engine will respond late to pressing the gas pedal.

Signs of contamination

Problems with the throttle valve can be identified by characteristic symptoms.

Signs

Explanation

Engine has difficulty returning from high to low speeds

This happens when you take your foot off the gas pedal. Instead of a smooth return to the required parameters, the speed literally drops to the 400 rpm mark. The engine may stall and begin to shake. The speed can return to the desired level, but with difficulty

The engine is difficult to start when cold and even when operating temperature is reached

To start the engine normally, you need to turn the starter for a long time. You can identify the problem by smell. The characteristic aroma of unburned fuel will come from the exhaust pipe. Try pressing the pedal all the way down several times. This will open the throttle fully, air will flow in, and the engine will start. But in the first few minutes the engine will still stall

Troubling the motor is a rather indirect sign, since this is how the engine can behave in various types of failure. But don't rule out problems with the throttle.

Symptoms of pollution

These include:

  1. It becomes difficult for the engine to switch from high speeds to lower speeds and vice versa.
  2. The engine stalls while moving with shaking and has great difficulty restoring normal speed.
  3. The engine stalls at idle speed.
  4. Cold starting of the engine is difficult. In order to start the engine, you need to turn it with the starter for a long time.
  5. You will smell gasoline from the exhaust pipe.
  6. The first few minutes after starting the engine will “triple”.

It is recommended to clean the damper every 50-60 thousand kilometers . You should also periodically perform certain preventive actions.

Causes of pollution

A mixture of dust and oil particles slowly covers the surface of the valve during operation. This is especially noticeable in places where there are air turbulences.

If you do not clean it on time, then over time the thermal gap will become overgrown with such plaque. Also, the valve stroke in the damper, which regulates the idle speed of the car, will decrease.

Cleaning the damper

This work must be done with the engine turned off. You also need to wait until it cools down to avoid burns.

Tools and materials:

Key "13" for removing the throttle assembly

Set of screwdrivers for work

Carburetor cleaner

Ear sticks that can be used to clean the flap

Throttle assembly gasket

  1. Screwdriver Set.
  2. The key is "13".
  3. Rags (you can take ear cleaning sticks).
  4. Pad.
  5. Flushing liquid.

Repair work

Now to the question of how the cleaning procedure is performed. For everything to go smoothly and without problems, it is enough to prepare all the necessary materials and tools in advance, place everything at hand and get to work.

To clean the throttle you will need:

  • Screwdriver Set;
  • 13mm wrench;
  • Throttle valve cleaner.

Specialized preparations made from appropriate components are sold specifically for these purposes. Do not spare money on their purchase, since the funds will last for a long time. This is more profitable than changing the damper every time.

Cleaning with special means

Preparation

Let's start with the preparatory activities that will ultimately allow you to get to the throttle body and more and clean it properly.

  1. Remove the casing that is installed on the power unit.
  2. Unscrew the cap on the expansion tank. This will allow you to relieve excess pressure from the cooling system.
  3. Slightly loosen the tension on the mounting clamps, then remove the forced ventilation tube.
  4. Examine the current condition of the air pipe, which should also be removed and, if necessary, replaced.
  5. If there are significant traces of oil in the pipe, then you can be 100% sure that the throttle is definitely clogged.
  6. The problem is most likely in the forced ventilation duct. This is explained by the fact that contaminants in the form of gas from the crankcase and oil particles have no other way than through the ventilation branch.
  7. Next you need to remove the damper heating tubes. To do this, just loosen the clamps with a screwdriver.
  8. For a while, come up with plugs for them from improvised means - old spark plugs, some kind of non-hollow rubber bands. In short, anything that fits the diameter of the hole.
  9. Remove the fuel tank ventilation system hose. To do this, you must first unscrew the clamp, remove the cable and unscrew the throttle mounting nuts.
  10. Be sure to remove the connectors from two sensors - idle speed and throttle position. They are located on the unit being repaired, so there will be no problems with the search.

There is nothing difficult about cleaning the throttle valve. This procedure can be easily done with your own hands, without involving specialists from car services and without spending extra money.

  • Using the purchased throttle cleaner, clean the channels and the entire disassembled assembly;
  • Rinse the engine's forced crankcase ventilation duct especially carefully, since this is where the largest amount of pollutants comes from;
  • Use sharp objects if you want to carry out the work responsibly and as thoroughly as possible. A simple knitting needle will do;
  • Remove the idle air control. To do this, simply unscrew a couple of bolts;
  • Be sure to wash the unit thoroughly;
  • Check the condition of the rod. If it is heavily soiled or there is play, the element is easiest to replace. It's not expensive;
  • Inspect the current condition of the gasket. If the gasket is damaged, be sure to buy a new one. Even if it is in satisfactory condition, we advise you to make a replacement once you have begun to dismantle this unit;
  • After washing the throttle assembly elements, return all its components to their places, proceeding in the reverse order.

Cleaning result

If you follow the recommendations, use special cleaning products and do not rush, after the washing procedure all problems with the gas pedal will disappear, the engine will again clearly respond to your “commands”.

As you can see, cleaning the throttle is quite simple. The most difficult stage can only be called disassembling the unit. And then, in the confident hands of a master, even a beginner, everything will go smoothly and without mistakes.

Cleaning the mechanism

Inspection work is carried out exclusively on a cooled engine, in order to avoid injury and burns. The repairman needs to prepare the following available tools: a size 13 socket wrench, screwdrivers, and a special liquid for cleaning the DZ VAZ 2110.

Algorithm for dismantling and cleaning the unit:

  1. Remove the plastic cover of the power unit.
  2. We unscrew the cap of the expansion tank to minimize the pressure in the coolant system.
  3. We dismantle the air ventilation pipe. At the same time, we carry out a visual inspection for the presence of traces of engine oil, which may indicate that the valves are clogged.
  4. Using a screwdriver, remove the throttle sensor.
  5. Remove the gas tank ventilation system pipe.
  6. Disconnect the throttle cable.

To clean the throttle valve of a VAZ 2110, you will need a chemical cleaner that will remove dust, debris, carbon deposits from the throttle valve channels. Depending on the degree of blockage, you can use a household needle to clean it.

We unscrew the idle air control (IAC), also rinsing it with cleaner. At the same time, we carry out a visual inspection of the unit, and if there are defects, we replace it.

The throttle valve gasket on the VAZ 2110 injector should not have mechanical damage. If there is a discrepancy, replace it. The cleaning process is complete. We reassemble in reverse order.

The throttle sensor is also subject to inspection, a malfunction of which can be indicated by instability of idle speed, loss of throttle response and agility of the vehicle. It is sometimes called a throttle position sensor (TPS). The TPS is installed on the intake manifold. The main purpose is to monitor the position of remote sensing in a given period.

To check the functionality of the TPS, you will need a multimeter. The readings when the ignition is on and the remote control is closed should not be more than 0.6 Volts, and when open – 4.0 Volts. If a discrepancy is detected with the specified data or chaotic jumps in the readings, it should be immediately replaced with a new one, having also checked it first.

There are two types of TPS: shoulder-resistive, the service life of which can vary from 5 thousand to 60 thousand, depending on the quality of the assembly. The second type is contactless, which are famous for their long service life, despite the high price, compared to their “younger brother”. Such sensors are also called Hall sensors, as the principle of operation of the electromagnetic effect was invented by a scientist with that name.

If instability in the operation of the power unit is detected, you should contact specialized technical service centers for a high-quality and prompt replacement of the damper or TPS. The average price for a VAZ 2110 throttle body will be about 270 rubles. During diagnostics, qualified specialists will conduct a complete inspection of the unit, check the operation of its main components, and, if necessary, replace it.

All certified service stations provide a guarantee for spare parts and components, which indicates the quality of the products. Having installed new spare parts, the driver will no longer be bothered by instability in the operation of the vehicle for a long time. It should be remembered that systematically carrying out preventive maintenance on a car will significantly extend its impeccable service life and prevent sudden breakdowns, which is much more economical than carrying out major repairs of the unit.

Functions

In simple terms, without terminology unnecessary for most motorists, the throttle valve is nothing more than the gas pedal of your car.

By pressing or releasing this pedal, you thereby close or, on the contrary, open this damper.

The device provides a path for additional air to enter. When you press the gas pedal to the floor as much as possible, you open the throttle fully, so the engine speed increases.

Removing the throttle mechanism from under the hood of a car

Repairing the product yourself is extremely easy. The VAZ 2110 throttle valve is removed from the hood in a matter of minutes. It also takes a little time to check the damper position potentiometer and, in fact, clean it with a special product.

Cleaning the throttle valve on a VAZ 2110-2112

In order to wash the product from contaminants, you will need to buy a spray with carburetor cleaning liquid from a car store. From extensive experience using sprays, we can say that higher price offers in no way affect the quality of cleaning. Therefore, you can buy the cheapest one. This pleasure costs about 100 rubles.

Thoroughly wash the entire internal surface of the VAZ 2110 throttle valve until it sparkles like new and then wipe it with a rag. Don't forget to unscrew the idle air control and wash its channels in the same way. Check the condition of the regulator mechanism, replace if necessary.

Signs of damper contamination

The car itself may tell you that it’s time to start cleaning the damper. To do this, you need to listen to the engine. A few main signs:

  • when the e-gas pedal is released, the engine speed decreases jerkily;
  • difficulty starting in winter;
  • When starting, a strong smell of gasoline may be felt in the garage;
  • at the beginning of operation, the engine stalls, since not all cylinders start at the same time;
  • the car jerks during acceleration;
  • it is impossible to brake with the engine and coast;
  • when switching to low speeds, the car may stall;
  • When driving at low speeds, shocks are felt.

The appearance of these symptoms is due to the fact that insufficient air enters the engine and the fuel mixture becomes poorly enriched. Due to the design features, combustion product residues accumulate on the damper - unprocessed fuel, soot, drops of oil. Dust and small particles of sand are added to them from the air supply system, which makes the mass very thick. The intervals between preventive cleanings are shortened by poor quality fuel and engine oil.

When the layer of dirt becomes thicker, the damper cannot move smoothly, and its opening angle becomes smaller. Because of this, the amount of air entering the cylinders is reduced and engine power is reduced.

Cleaning

Even if the purpose of removing the throttle was to modify it, still do not forget that for stable operation it also needs periodic cleaning. To be honest, there is nothing complicated in this procedure, but it will help the engine run better, which is quite important.

For cleaning you will need:

  • short and long screwdrivers;
  • toothbrush (soft, or just old);
  • cotton buds;
  • cleaning agent;

Preventative cleaning of the part

In order not to wait until the VAZ 2114 throttle completely stops functioning, it is necessary to carry out surface washing of the part. This cleaning method is very simple. But do not forget that by performing such an operation, you will only clean some parts of the damper from dust. Consequently, the work will not be of much use. However, superficial cleaning will be an excellent start for VAZ drivers who have no experience in servicing the throttle valve.

Surface washing of the part

For preventative cleaning, it is necessary to remove the corrugation from the surface of the part. Next, we spray the internal parts of the damper with a cleaning agent, after which we thoroughly clean its structure with a rag or brush. The same must be done on the reverse side of the throttle valve. After this, install the corrugation and close the hood of the car.

Installing the throttle body corrugation

This cleaning method can be performed every 20–30 thousand km. In this way, you will significantly reduce the clogging of the element and extend its service life.

Nature of faults

Malfunctions or incorrect adjustment of the damper can be manifested in the following features:

  • uncertain or difficult engine starting;
  • increased fuel consumption;
  • increased idle speed;
  • failures when accelerating;
  • Jerking when switching.
