Replacing the rear springs of a Lada Granta


Good day to all! Yesterday I did what I had planned several months ago - I lowered Grant. I did not cut the springs, but simply installed new Technospring springs.

Front springs: -70; Rear springs: -90;

The process of replacing the springs itself took about 4 hours. I think it's good for the first time =)

By the way, the progressive spring should turn downwards more often! In the photo the spring is installed INCORRECTLY!

I didn’t cut or overcook the racks (=and it will be fine)

So, the result of the work: the view has become much better, the car has become more stable on the road, comfort has been maintained at the same level.

In the basic configuration, the ground clearance of the Lada Granta Sedan and Lada Granta Liftback is 160 mm. The clearance height is quite enough to overcome all road obstacles.

Tuning enthusiasts often practice the so-called understatement of Grants. To do this, non-standard suspension elements are installed, and the vehicle's ground clearance is reduced by 30 - 70% of the base one.

The advantages and disadvantages of tuning and how to carry it out will be discussed below.

Ways to understate Liftback Grants

  1. Buying an air suspension on a Lada. The average cost is from 37 to 50 thousand rubles, depending on the place of purchase and technical characteristics.
  2. Front and rear suspension kit with mechanical ride height adjuster. If necessary, we independently adjust the suspension height, reduce (increase) the stiffness of the shock absorbers.
  3. The most cost effective option is to install a lowered suspension kit. We dismantle the standard shock absorbers and springs and install new ones on the factory mounts. The lowered Lada Granta is ready.
  4. Low-profile tires: changing the car's shoes to a low-profile range. Cheap and cheerful, but not advisable.
  5. Installation of lowering springs, which are sold at retail. We select the height according to the ground clearance.
  6. Trimming one or two coils on factory springs.

Problems with lowered cars

One of the two main problems in Russia is roads. It is they, or rather their quality, that spoil not only the lowered suspension, but also the stock one.

• Loss of comfort when driving a car.

Sometimes it’s impossible to look at ultra-low cars trying to overcome a bump or other pothole on the road without tears.

• With an illiterate approach to underestimating the car's play (self-adjusting screws on springs, etc.), the suspension will not last long. And its incorrect operation only harms its entire presence, both the car and its owner.

Option No. 1 Installation of short springs


Lowering springs

Let's look at how to properly lower the Granta Sedan.

  1. We place the car on a flat platform, secure the rear row of wheels with wheel chocks, and activate the parking brake lever.
  2. Jack up the front part (side) of the car and remove the wheels.
  3. Unscrew the upper and lower fastenings of the front shock absorber assembly and disconnect it from the hub. We remove it from the wheel arch.
  4. We disassemble the front strut module into its component parts: shock absorber, spring, support bearing, bowl, nuts.
  5. In place of the standard spring, install a new one (short one). Depending on the wishes of the owner, the spring height will be 30 mm, 50 mm, 70 mm.

If the owner does not pursue any specific goals when tuning, it is enough to limit the size to 30 or 50 mm. When choosing the specified parameters, there is no need to replace the standard shock absorber or insert additional rubber spacers under the support bearing mount.

We assemble the structure in reverse order.

Springs and strut supports for Lada Granta - choose the best

It is better to install original springs. No manufacturer offers the same accuracy as VAZ in this case. There is only one reason for this - no one wants a manufacturer of springs specifically for Grants to do it efficiently and cheaply. Therefore, you have to give preference to stock solutions. As for the upper and ball joints of the Lada Granta struts, it is worth paying attention to the following features:

  • the upper supports of the front struts are most often installed in Russian SS20, there are options for using more expensive solutions, but this purchase takes a long time;
  • but the rear upper supports for shock absorbers are not easy to find, the Acomi company will help you here, but it is better to contact the officials and buy what was originally in your car;
  • VAZ ball joints are no good and cost 20-30 thousand, so it’s better to buy Belmag or Forward, which are made in Russia and cost very affordable money;
  • you can also choose German Kraft ball joints, but here you should beware of fakes, so always choose parts based on price and quality with a specialist;
  • It is better to buy any small details such as fasteners, bolts, nuts and washers from the factory, as otherwise you may simply not reassemble the car properly after disassembly.

There is an opinion that factory spare parts are always better than analog ones. But in the case of the Lada Granta this is not at all the case. Sometimes you can find quite adequate spare parts that fit Granta from German and Japanese brands. And then you can buy really wonderful additions and parts that last for years. However, any part has its own service life, and this also needs to be remembered.

Option #2: Installing a complete suspension kit

The process is similar to above:

  1. After hanging the car and removing the wheel, unscrew the fastenings of the shock absorbers, hub, ball joint tip, suspension arm, and silent blocks.
  2. We remove the parts one by one, installing new sets.
  3. We complete the assembly, the ground clearance is lowered by 3 - 7 cm.

Note to the driver! Service center technicians do not recommend installing the air suspension on the Lada Granta yourself in “garage” conditions. Due to the complexity of the design, the work must be carried out by professionals. Subsequently, quality assurance will be provided.

How to remove the spring and shock absorber on a Grant?

  1. If the vehicle is equipped with an ABS system, then before starting the repair process with shock absorbers and springs, it is imperative to remove the sensor of this safety unit.
  2. Now you can disconnect the tie rod. This manipulation involves simultaneously disconnecting the tip of the steering mechanism from the swing arm located on the shock-absorbing element.
  3. To prevent a large error in the installation angles of both Lada Granta wheels, before dismantling it is necessary to mark the location of the upper bolt with a washer, with which the suspension element is attached to the steering axle with its bracket. An ordinary marker can be perfect for this. This simple action will allow you to easily get to the service center in order to subsequently correct the camber and toe. And while driving, the car will not so obviously try to move to the side.
  4. Unscrew the bolts securing the strut and knuckle. First, we release the upper bolt paired with the eccentric washer, and then remove the lower fastener. Now the time has come to disconnect the strut from the trunnion. We proudly perform this action.
  5. Let's go back under the hood. We find three points (nuts). This is the attachment point for the shock-absorbing element to the body spar cup. The nuts are unscrewed evenly (one at a time, but by a small amount). This will prevent the rack from skewing. We support the shock-absorbing element itself from the inside of the wheel arch so as not to cause it to fall. The entire event is implemented using the key at “13”.
  6. Having achieved victory over the nuts, we solemnly remove the stand.
  7. We use ties for spring elements. The process of clamping the coil with these devices is carried out until the moment when the spring is released from the thrust between the cups of the rack and the support.
  8. After making sure that the spring is free, use a “22” key to unscrew the central nut of the rod.
  9. Now let's start disassembling the rack. We dismantle the support with its bearing, remove the upper metal cup and the damping element. All that remains is the boot and the spring itself.
  10. We inspect all parts for signs of wear or damage.

Disadvantages of lowered suspension on Grant

  • limited vehicle operation area;
  • mandatory presence of a smooth road surface, absence of gravel, crushed stone, coarse and medium-sized stones;
  • restrictions on the number of transported cargo and passengers;
  • frequent need for technical inspection and maintenance;
  • premature failure of air suspension elements during frequent use in winter.

How best to make an understated Grant:

  • seek qualified assistance from service station specialists;
  • install components only under warranty;
  • exclude handicraft repairs.

Now you know which racks are best to install. Replacing the shock absorber strut, as well as disassembling it in order to change specific parts, did not turn out to be a complicated procedure. This work can be done by an ordinary Lada Granta owner who has the desire and the tools. Upon completion of the repair work, do not forget to check and adjust the alignment.
