How to rinse an injector with your own hands

With the increase in the number of cars on the roads, the number of various services and workshops is growing. Despite fierce competition, the cost of their services does not fall. To save money, it is advisable for every vehicle owner to understand how it functions.

In this case, car owners “open their eyes” to how to properly maintain their “iron horse”. The electrical and fuel systems require special attention from the motorist.

Injectors - what are they?

Let's figure out what injectors are and what they are needed for. Injectors are an electromagnetic mechanism designed to spray fuel into the cylinder. Their number depends on the number of cylinders in the car. The VAZ car has 4 cylinders, therefore there are also 4 injectors.

A serviceable and clean injector sprays fuel evenly without any delays or jerks.

A clogged injector may not spray fuel at all or, on the contrary, pour it in drops. As a result, the engine cannot operate normally and correctly.

Ultrasonic injector washing

The fuel filter is located at the rear of the car, under the body. To replace, you will need to install the car on a viewing hole or jack it up.

The gasoline in the fuel line is under pressure. Any work under operating atmospheres, including replacing the fuel filter, will be accompanied by fuel splashing. Before starting work, you need to reduce the pressure in the system. This can be done in 2 ways: raise the rear seat, disconnect the power, or remove the fuel pump fuse F21.

  • Now you need to start the car and wait for the engine to stall, running out of gas. The starter must be left on after the engine is stopped to relieve pressure. Don't forget to apply the handbrake.
  • You can bleed off any remaining fuel.

Now you need to climb up the car and unclip the latches. This is easy to do with a flat-head screwdriver, but accumulated dirt or corrosion can interfere, causing the metal parts to turn sour.

  • A fuel filter is available, but it is better to take it with a rag, since there may be fuel residues in the hoses. You will need to first remove the assembly from the grooves.
  • A new fuel filter is installed in place. Don't forget to perform the rotation, it is indicated by an arrow on the body.

  • Depending on the shutdown method, the fuel pump is connected to the on-board electrical network.
  • Now a test run of the motor is performed. It works like this: the ignition is turned on, but the engine does not need to be started. After 5 seconds the operation is repeated. After another 5 seconds, you can try to start the car. Pauses are necessary in order to raise the pressure in the system to operating levels.
  • If the car starts normally, the work on replacing the fuel filter yourself is completed.

Symptoms of clogged injectors

Loss of dynamics is one of the main signs of clogged injectors. If they are contaminated, the car simply will not accelerate properly.

  • Unstable idling, the engine at idle will operate unstably and intermittently.
  • Starting difficulties can occur when there is contamination or when the injectors stop holding pressure. Fuel begins to drip into the cylinder, which can cause popping sounds in the exhaust pipe.
  • Ringing fingers are inevitable when the spray nozzle is clogged; this is due to the fact that the fuel entering the cylinder is mixed with air and the concentration of fuel in this mixture is quite small, so the engine experiences detonation.

Driving with dirty injectors will not provide any driving pleasure. And driving with such a problem is highly not recommended.

Signs of contamination

Conventionally, the process of contamination of nozzles is divided into three stages:

1). At the first, low level, fuel consumption increases, although engine operation remains normal.

2). With the second, medium, there is a significant increase in fuel consumption. The engine gives a “tweaking” effect. There is unevenness in the exhaust. The car accelerates worse. There is a foreign smell in the exhaust.

3). With the third, strong one, the engine operates unstably. When idling, it is possible to stop its operation, or the operation of individual cylinders. Possible popping sounds in the air filter. Acceleration dynamics deteriorate significantly, and fuel consumption increases noticeably.

When to clean injectors

Cleaning of injectors on Lada cars is carried out according to the condition of the car. If there are no problems with your car, then there is no need to clean them. Also, to find out for sure whether the injectors need to be cleaned, you first need to diagnose the fuel system. You can learn more about how to diagnose the fuel system in our article.

The manufacturer recommends cleaning the injectors every 50,000 km. Since the fuel at our gas stations leaves much to be desired, just before this mileage they begin to become clogged and flushing them will be useful. You can wash it at a service station, or you can do it yourself. Next, we will look in detail at how to wash the injectors on a VAZ car at home.

How to find out what condition the thermostat is in: working or not

To check the thermostat on a VAZ 2110 it is not necessary to remove it from the car. You can simply start the car and warm it up to operating temperature. After warming up, leave the cabin, open the hood and look into the engine compartment. There you will need to find the lower pipe coming from the thermostat itself. This detail needs to be thoroughly felt. If it is slightly warm at the very beginning, and gradually warms up as the engine warms up, then the thermostat is working as expected. If the lower pipe remains cold, then the thermostat needs to be changed. To check the functionality of the VAZ 2110 8-valve injector thermostat, you can disassemble it and remove the thermocouple. He is precisely responsible for the operation of the cooler. It needs to be checked. To do this, you need to take hot water and lower this element into it. You will need to place a thermometer in the water and observe how the temperature changes. The device itself will also need to be monitored.

The water will need to be heated. Once it reaches 90 degrees, the thermocouple rod should extend. If this is not the case, then this part needs to be replaced. By the way, in most situations in the VAZ 2110 you do not need to completely change the thermostat. This is quite expensive and, as a rule, is only necessary when there is visible damage.

When the need arises to replace the thermostat from Granta for a VAZ 2110 injector 8 valves, car owners are forced to buy a new device. You should also be careful here. It is advisable to check the device before purchasing. To do this, blow strongly into the fitting. If it is not noticeable that air is passing anywhere, then a small circuit prevents its passage. This means that such a part is not worth buying. How much does a thermostat cost for a VAZ 2110? It is impossible to answer this question unambiguously, since the price depends on whether the unit is new or used.

Methods for cleaning injectors

Injector flushing additives

There are a huge number of different additives for flushing the injector. Such additives are poured into the car tank and mixed with fuel. The mixture of fuel and additives enters the main elements of the fuel system and flushes them, including the injectors. But, as a rule, such washings do not bring much results, since all the dirt that was washed away to the injectors gets and settles on them, which can only aggravate the situation. Using this method is not recommended.

Instructions on how to wash injectors yourself

The number of drivers is growing every year, as is the income of numerous services and workshops. Unfortunately, many of them are simply “riders” who do not have the slightest idea about the functioning of their car.

Proper and timely maintenance of your car is a guarantee of safe, accident-free driving. Following the advice of experienced specialists, any car owner can wash the injectors without any problems.

With the engine running

This method allows you to clean not only the injectors, but also has a beneficial effect on the piston rings, freeing them from coke.

Flushing is carried out only with the engine running:

  1. For an effective procedure, you will need a plastic two-liter bottle, in the lid and bottom of which holes with a diameter of 12.5 mm are drilled.
  2. Two nipples for tubeless tires are inserted there.
  3. The car's fuel hose is connected to the upper one, and the compressor hose is put on the lower one to build up pressure.
  4. An injector cleaning agent is poured into the bottle and air is pumped to a pressure of 2-2.5 atmospheres.
  5. This design is attached to the hood with the neck down.

After this, the engine starts and continues to run until the flushing fluid is completely used up.

With removal of injectors

This method is relatively complex, since it requires dismantling all the injectors and wires. This method, using a car battery, a 9-volt battery, wires, and a thin syringe needle, simulates the operation of each individual injector.

For this procedure, an injector cleaner is used. The results of such a point method are characterized by efficiency and quality.

Do-it-yourself cleaning of Lada Granta injectors

It will not be news to anyone that gasoline at gas stations is not getting any better. Frankly, he's bad. Without going into details, the quality of the fuel greatly affects the performance of the power system, in particular the injectors. On Lada Granta and relatively new Lada Vesta with 16-valve engines, cleaning the injectors is one of the mandatory measures.

When to flush the injectors on a Lada Granta

The difficulty in diagnosing injectors on modern engines is that it is almost impossible to visually assess their condition without removing them. Signals about loss of injector performance can also come from the on-board computer.

In addition, the driver may notice a number of changes in the behavior of the car:

  1. Increased fuel consumption.
  2. Deterioration in dynamics.
  3. Power drop.
  4. Difficult cold or hot starting.
  5. Dips, unstable operation in transient conditions.
  6. Unstable idle speed.

Of course, there is diagnostic equipment, there are scanners and special programs for a computer or smartphone, which will also show that it is time to clean the injectors. Another thing is that not everyone can use all this, and not everyone needs it. And preventive maintenance will never hurt the injectors if the cleaning is done correctly and efficiently.

The optimal mileage between injector cleanings, as practice shows, is a maximum of 20,000 km, and preferably 12-15 thousand.

At the same time, experienced grant managers recommend cleaning the injector on both 8-valve and 16-valve engines, immediately before every second oil change .

General information

It is no secret that most modern drivers, even at the driving school stage, devote too little time to studying the general principles of operation of vehicle components and assemblies or completely ignore this part of the training course. In this regard, the topic of this article will be relevant for many.

So, the nozzle, or as it is also called the injector, is part of the injection system of injection gasoline and diesel engines. The purpose of the device is to atomize fuel to form a fuel-air mixture in the intake manifold or combustion chamber. According to injection methods, there are four types of nozzles: mechanical, electromagnetic, piezoelectric, hydraulic. However, the general operating principles and basic design for all types remain the same.

Instead of fog, you get streams that mix very poorly with the air. As a result, the engine begins to work intermittently. To resume normal operation of the injectors, you need to return the exhaust ports to their original capacity. In particularly advanced cases, ultrasonic cleaning of the injectors is used to remove deposits that can completely block the outlet. This procedure is possible with special equipment and is quite expensive. Therefore, even car service centers offer injector washing and other methods of cleaning them, which are quite accessible at home or in a garage.

Methods for cleaning Lada Granta injectors. Why clean

Injectors are cleaned in different ways. There are several methods, and the most effective is bench cleaning followed by checking the performance and shape of the torch. It looks something like this.

Bench testing of injectors. The results of flare formation are immediately visible

If for some reason we do not have the opportunity to perform bench cleaning, we will clean it ourselves and there are at least three simple ways to do this:

  1. Injector cleaner . This method is perfect for the laziest - just pour injector cleaner into the tank, it mixes with fuel and restores order in the power system. Not long ago, we looked into the merits of the best fuel system cleaners for 2022. But this technology has a significant disadvantage. It cannot be used in cases where the car’s mileage has exceeded 30-50 thousand km. Everything is very simple. During this time, a huge amount of rust and debris accumulates in the tank, fuel filters, fuel module and line. All this will be dissolved by the cleaner, mixed and supplied directly to the nozzles. In addition, no one knows how rubber seals and rings will react to a chemically aggressive agent. Therefore, there may be more harm than good.
  2. Cleaning injectors without removing them from the engine . Nice and simple method. The advantage is that in this way we also clean the intake manifold, intake valves, and combustion chamber from carbon deposits. Sometimes this technique even helps to decarbonize the rings. The downside is that after washing without removing it you have to change the oil and spark plugs. Although, as we said, cleaning can be timed to coincide with changing the oil and filters.
  3. Washing injectors with removal . Everything is clear here. This is the best way to get your injectors looking their best. The method works if we know for sure that the fuel system is in order, there are no problems with the electronics and there are no frogs croaking in the tank. You can literally rinse on your knees and without any stands.

Popular flushing fluids

Among such compositions, the most popular include:

Distinguished by the versatility of Liqui Moly. It can be used when you need to flush the injectors of any car. Disadvantage: carbon deposits on the cylinder head and valves cannot be removed.

Well-cleaning and carbon-removing Wynn's. Used if the car was manufactured no later than 2002. But it is still advisable to make sure that it can be used to wash the injectors of a specific car model.

Carbon Clean can be called something in between the two discussed above.

Laurel liquid gives a good effect. It has almost the same composition as Wynn's. The only serious difference is that the price of Laurel is much higher for the same effect.

Not everyone knows that the main reason for clogging and failure of injector nozzles is the low quality of Russian gasoline. Therefore, the procedure for cleaning the power system is most in demand in this country.

However, washing the injector and nozzles without removing them is a fairly simple operation. Although disassembling and cleaning the injector in a workshop is quite expensive. But you can save on this procedure by cleaning the injectors in the “field” conditions, in your garage. In this article we will tell you how to do it yourself.
