The device has become popular in recent years. Now even non-smoking car owners use the cigarette lighter. Indeed, in addition to its nominal purpose, the device performs a lot of functions. For example, various devices are connected to the cigarette lighter socket:
- power bank for mobile phones or tablets;
- charging for laptop and electronics;
- DVR;
- navigation system;
- electric pump that inflates the wheels.
When used correctly, the device works for a long time, but due to certain features it may fail. Read on to find out why the breakdown occurs, how to recognize the cause of the malfunction, replace the cigarette lighter or repair it on the Lada Granta model.
Grant's cigarette lighter stopped working
I decided to check the tire pressure and pump it up a little.
Why did I take a compressor (pump) from my dad’s car that runs from the cigarette lighter? Already knowing that the cigarette lighter was specific, I understood that the plug might have to be held. I walked around 2 wheels, held the plug with one hand, and turned the pump on and off with the other. Then, no matter how I twist the plug, it’s no use. Well, I thought that was it, the cigarette lighter had already burned out. I looked at the plug, took it apart, the fuse is fine. I plugged it in, gave the pump to my dad and pumped it up at a gas station. The next day I realized that the signal was not working
.
Since I had already read a little, I realized that the problem was most likely in the fuse. I opened it, looked, and the F20 at 15A
.
I went to Auto49, bought this F20 and a set of spare ones. Replaced it, the signal worked.
The most interesting thing for me is that, in theory, this fuse is responsible for the trunk lock, the box, and the diagnostic connector in addition to the cigarette lighter and the signal. I don’t know how everything else was listed, but the trunk lock definitely worked when it burned out.
Why doesn't the cigarette lighter work?
The cigarette lighter on a Lada Granta car may not work for various reasons. The most common faults are:
- blown cigarette lighter fuse;
- poor contact;
- broken wiring.
Fuses often fail and blow when using many electrical devices. To prevent this, the maximum power of all electrical appliances should be up to 180 W.
Rust and oxides form on the antennae of a cartridge made of metal during operation. This prevents good connection between the elements (electrical contact). Therefore, it is recommended to periodically clean the contacts from oxides and rust using a needle file.
To detect a broken electrical wiring, a special device, a multimeter, is used. Broken wires are replaced or soldered.
Let's sum it up
All processes for restoring the operation of the cigarette lighter socket are performed independently. Only if one of the wires connecting the equipment is burned out, you will have to contact specialists with a request to replace this wire. In all other situations, it is enough to use your own strength and quickly fix the problem using a soldering iron or simply replacing the fuse or cigarette lighter head.
If your car has non-working electrical equipment, it is worth finding out the causes of the breakdown and eliminating them. This will increase the operating comfort of the vehicle and make the machine safe to use. Have you ever had problems with your cigarette lighter?
Location of the cigarette lighter fuse in the new mounting block
This is a very interesting situation. In the spirit of AvtoVAZ. Remove the cover of the mounting block and you will see a diagram of the location of fuses and relays, which will have nothing to do with reality.
The diagram on the cover of the mounting block, another charade from AvtoVAZ
In this diagram, the cigarette lighter fuse is numbered F20. But in fact, the correct number would be F27.
And then the AvtoVAZ designers gave us a surprise.

Sometimes it is not necessary to change the Lada Granta device. You can carry out the repair yourself. After removing the device, it is worth inspecting the condition of the contacts. The fallen wires should be soldered, and the oxidized contacts should be treated with a needle file. After this, the device can restore functionality.
Inside the cigarette lighter there is a small mica plate. This is a semiconductor that often fails. It needs to be removed. After this, it is worth assembling the device and then checking that it is working correctly.
What does each fuse do?
Controllers are responsible for certain functions in vehicle control.
The fuse diagram of the Granta Liftback is as follows:
Numbering | Maximum value of I in a section of the circuit, in Amperes | Functional |
F1 | 15 | -electrical unit that controls the internal combustion engine; |
-correct operation of the injector;
- spark ignition unit;
- supply of windshield cleaning fluid;
-electric lock in the trunk;
How to remove the cigarette lighter on a Grant
Before work, you will need to stock up on the necessary tools. To remove the cigarette lighter on a Grant, you need:
- protective gloves;
- Screwdriver Set.
To troubleshoot you will need:
- soldering iron with solder;
- diagnostic tester;
- needle file to remove oxides or rust.
Detailed video instructions
After preparation, you can begin the dismantling process.
- Turn off the ignition, open the hood and remove the terminal from the battery. The negative contact must be removed - this will de-energize the system and eliminate the possibility of a short circuit.
- We remove the metal cartridge from its seat.
- Using a thin screwdriver, bend the latches inside the socket.
- We take it out and disconnect the wire block.
- Remove the green filter.
Now you can repair the part or replace it. Assembly is carried out in the reverse order described earlier. Detailed instructions on how to change the cigarette lighter on a Lada Granta car are shown in the video.
Photo of the correct replacement
After carrying out the work, it is advisable to check the proper operation of the device.
- The car cigarette lighter should fit tightly in the socket, and there should be no oxides or rust on the contacts.
- You should measure the voltage on the battery, and then check again by turning on the ignition. If the drawdown is more than 0.5 volts, then there is a short circuit somewhere.
- All soldered wires must be insulated and shrink-wrapped.
Causes of cigarette lighter malfunctions
So, everything is clear with the forms.
But how to choose a device whose use will definitely not burn anything? It is very important to pay attention to whether the maximum electrical load is indicated on the device and what its value is. It should not exceed the standard 15 amperes. Another noteworthy feature is the current strength of the USB connectors. It ranges from 500 milliamps to 2 amperes. It is better in this case to take the maximum. If the device seems too fragile and unreliable in appearance, it is better to refrain from purchasing it. The most meticulously worth inspecting is the connectors of the splitter themselves, those round ones. There should be no circuit board protruding from the bottom of the splitter sockets. The contact sleeve of the splitter should not be too thin. If it appears to be no thicker than foil, the device may be dangerous to operate.
Even when using a high-quality extension cord, remember that the Kalina cigarette lighter is a fire hazard; under no circumstances load the splitter to its full capacity. Don't count on the fuse, because you already understand how quickly it gives out. You also need to be careful with the splitter. On one of the Kalina station wagons, the fuse mentioned above failed when only an empty splitter was connected. This is precisely because of those ill-fated contacts. But after replacing the fuse everything worked again.
Under no circumstances should a more powerful fuse be inserted. Only standard at 15 amps. Otherwise, the wiring will be completely destroyed under the increased load. It is worth paying attention to the plugs. The ones that actually fit will never cause a short circuit. The cigarette lighter may also stop working because dust and oxidation have accumulated in the fuse box. Many car enthusiasts say that if nothing burns out, then it’s only a matter of time. There are 2 simple solutions offered.
- Deliberately break the cigarette lighter itself (that is, not the socket), connecting devices to a splitter.
- Bend the contacts in the socket a little further.
Replacing suspicious plugs with more suitable ones also helps. Take a closer look at the devices that you want to power from the cigarette lighter, otherwise you won’t have enough time to change fuses.
Talk and show: how not to burn your car
What can and cannot be plugged into a car cigarette lighter socket? On-board 12 V sockets, a burnt-out Honda and precautions - this and not only in our educational material.
Several years ago, an intriguing story appeared on many TV channels: a lady’s Honda Civic burned down. They say, I started charging my mobile phone, and then there was smoke, a stench and a full guard... In general, an unpleasant story. But who is to blame?
The television people who rushed in for an interview were openly offended by us: our opinion disappointed them, and the expected scandalous sensation did not happen. Because, in our opinion, no Honda is obliged to be responsible for the behavior of a device unknown to it. Humanly speaking, of course, one can sympathize with the lady, but the obvious culprit of the fire was a charger of unknown origin. And car manufacturers, as a rule, prohibit plugging everything into a socket - and rightly so. Those who disagree with this can mentally put themselves in their place: would you allow it? That's it - it's better not to...
In that story, the court sided with the car dealer’s representatives and rejected the claim. The reason was “violation of vehicle operating rules.” Arguments like “Everyone does this” don’t count: you have to answer for yourself personally.
Plugs of various devices - find two identical ones... And if you take into account that the sockets are also far from identical, it is clear why the possibility of a bad contact is not at all far-fetched. And why, by the way, do car manufacturers prohibit using just anything in their cars?

What can you plug into a car socket anyway? Unfortunately, there is no clear distinction between what can be done and what cannot be done. We conducted research on this topic, but the results were not clear. Some car manufacturers only allow the use of devices with their own brand on the label, others nod to mandatory compliance with the requirements of a certain SAE standard (and which car owner has seen it?), others categorically prohibit the use of the cigarette lighter socket for any unauthorized consumers, others stipulate the maximum current consumption...
It is necessary to distinguish the cigarette lighter socket from the on-board socket. Historically, the cigarette lighter appeared earlier - almost a hundred years ago. On the same Zhiguli, for example, there were no sockets - however, there were no gadgets for sale in those days either. Today we are actively fighting smoking, and therefore cigarette lighters are becoming a thing of history. But there are several sockets in a car.
At the same time, a lot of problems are caused by discrepancies in the designs and sizes of both the sockets themselves and the plugs. In particular, in a regular socket there is no bimetallic spring-grip for the cigarette lighter. In practice, many plugs like to jump out of their socket or, worse, make bad contact.
Manufacturers of gadgets use different plugs - it was this circumstance that, in our opinion, was the cause of the car fire mentioned above.
Fan heaters of different types. The power of the models shown is from 150 to 200 W. The actual current reaches 15 A - this is a lot. In case of poor contact, local heating is guaranteed. In addition, such devices are usually forgotten to be turned off, since they are intended for long-term use. And taking into account the fact that the real benefits of such heaters are ridiculous, it is better not to use them unless absolutely necessary. However, as for the benefits, this is my personal opinion.

Why didn't the fuse blow on that car? By the way, usually its nominal value is 15 A, less often - 10 A (in Zhiguli they used 16 A). Now imagine what happens if for some reason the device consumes a similar current for a long time, and the contact “sparks”.
Solid power begins to dissipate in the outlet, which quickly heats up and... well, the rest becomes clear. If there is thermoplastic around that is afraid of heating, then exactly what happened to the lady will happen. The fire was not a fire, but the torpedo melted.
In this case, the current can remain within the tolerance limits - this is not a short circuit! On my own behalf, I’ll add that in practice, fuses can often easily withstand increased current: this is not good, but - that is what it is...
Even if the likelihood of a fire is low, you should never provoke it. And we do this often. Below are the advice of a man who once survived a full-fledged fire, losing... Okay, I don’t want to remember.
Repair work
To begin with, we advise you to make room for yourself near the car so that you can open the doors without any problems, nothing prevents them from always being in the open position, and you have the opportunity to approach and move away from the car without overcoming multiple obstacles.
If in summer you can simply drive your car outside, then in winter you will have to limit yourself to the available space of a closed garage.
You are ready? Then you can start repairing.
Dedicated place where the cigarette lighter fuse is located on the VAZ 2114
- The first situation is that the fuse for the VAZ 2114 cigarette lighter has failed. A popular problem that is not so difficult to solve. The primary task is to determine where the cigarette lighter fuse is located on the VAZ 2114 . It's simple. Open the hatch where the entire fuse box is located. The element you are looking for is located to the left of the steering column. This is a 20-amp fuse, which has a special marking - F4 . It is difficult to confuse it with others, so finding the fuse is not a problem at all. Take a tester and check its functionality. If it works, we continue to look for the problem. If the fuse fails, you can simply purchase a new one. It’s cheap, so there shouldn’t be any problems finding and purchasing it.
- Since the old fuse has burned out, you won’t be able to simply take a new one, put it in place and supposedly complete the repair. It is extremely important to understand exactly why the old fuse blew. Figuring out how to remove the cigarette lighter on a VAZ 2114 is quite simple. Be sure to check the quality of the contacts in the blocks when leaving the mounting block. It is designated X1. This block has connections from the cigarette lighter located in the passenger compartment. If the reason is in the contacts, tighten them.
- The most popular problem with a cigarette lighter malfunction is the car owner’s own mistakes during operation. When connecting external devices to the device, there is no need to unscrew the plugs in different directions. Because of this, the plates short out and the cigarette lighter simply stops working.
- Another fairly common problem is a burnt-out backlight bulb. It is quite simple to replace it, but to do this, our device must first be removed from its socket.
- Pay attention to the moving core of your cigarette lighter. Examine it externally, check the quality and integrity of the spring coils. If there is damage, you will have to replace this element. The problem is that the core is not sold separately; auto parts stores offer only a prefabricated design. The only search option is all kinds of car flea markets, where grandfathers sell spare parts from their old cars. Despite the apparent absurdity, in such places you can often find excellent parts for cars such as the VAZ 2114.
Tips for motorists
The main problems associated with the failure of the cigarette lighter on a Lada Granta passenger car are that most inexperienced drivers begin to use the cigarette lighter socket not for its intended purpose, but as an outlet for connecting various additional devices that require on-board power supply of 12 volts. At the same time, these drivers do not have basic knowledge about the safe use of the cigarette lighter socket.
Firstly, Lada Granta drivers should know that the electrical circuit of the cigarette lighter, as well as the sound alarm set, trunk lock and gearbox is protected by fuse F20 (15A, blue), located in the mounting block in the front panel of the cabin to the left of the steering column. This means that the total power of consumers powered through this fuse should not exceed 180 watts (15A x 12V = 180W).
Therefore, the driver should ask what the power consumption of the device he wants to connect to the cigarette lighter socket is. If this power is more than 180 watts (for example, a compressor for inflating tires), then when it is connected to the cigarette lighter socket, the current in the circuit will be more than 15 amperes and fuse F20 will blow. Instead of a blown fuse, it is impossible to install another one, but one designed for a higher current strength, as this can lead to strong heating of the wires, melting of the insulation and a fire.
When do you need to adjust headlights on a Grant?
The main motive for working with headlights is insufficient road lighting. There are many reasons for this:
- From the factory the car comes with a low beam adjusted for the driver's weight of 75 kg . This is a universal setting - if your weight is different, you need to adjust it immediately after purchase;
- the hydraulic corrector has failed - when it breaks, the headlights either shine crookedly or are not adjusted at all;
- Driving over bumps and potholes over time leads to changes in the settings of the light beam;
- buying a car second-hand - it is not known exactly how the lights were set up by the previous owner.
Basic methods
If the cigarette lighter is faulty or occupied by other devices, use non-standard methods for connecting the DVR. With their help, there will be no need to use extra connectors.
The DVR is connected in the following ways:
- through a lampshade located on the ceiling;
- to ignition;
- directly to the battery;
- to the radio power supply;
- to the inner surface of the cigarette lighter.
The most common methods used are connection through the lampshade and ignition.
Before installing the recorder in the car, you need to decide where to mount the device.
Let's consider two fastening options:
using a suction cup;
It is recommended to use the standard fastening method - with a suction cup, since the suction cup comes complete with the device and can be easily removed from the glass, unlike adhesive tape.
Lamp lighting
If the device is located on top, it is recommended to connect the DVR to the lampshade. This is the closest power supply point. To complete the task you will need the following tools:
- flat screwdriver and Phillips screwdriver;
- a set of cables with which the device will be connected to electricity;
- a set of fastening brackets with Velcro;
- insulating tape;
- soldering iron;
- female cigarette lighter socket (optional).
Wiring Guide:
- The upper lampshade is disassembled using a screwdriver with a Phillips or flat tip - depending on the type of fastener.
- The contacts of the lampshade and the recorder are connected plus to plus, minus to minus. You can connect the ends of the wiring to the lamp plug.
It is impossible to insulate wires; this is stated in all rules for using electrical equipment. A poor connection often causes interference in video recording and distorts the recording. To determine which wire to connect the lamp to the recorder using a multimeter, marking the wires will also help. Red is a plus. Black is a minus.
The standard plug for supplying power to the recorder does not fit - it is disassembled or an additional female cigarette lighter socket is purchased. It is recommended to entrust the analysis to a specialist with technical education or work experience. Safety when connected to the lampshade is ensured by the power module. It is sold in many stores.
To ensure maximum safety when connecting to a lighting device, a power module is used. It must be purchased separately from the set as it is not included in the package.
The nuances of manipulating the power unit
To correctly replace an element in a LADA Granta, you should use specific rules and know where the so-called fuse box is located. If a burnout occurs, do not rush and replace the failed part with an analogue one. It is recommended to check the serviceability of the current collectors protected by this fuse.
We replace the element that contains the fuse box in strict accordance with the requirements of the circuit. There is no need to resort to installing fuses designed for a higher current limit, as this can cause a fire. It is also necessary to disconnect the negative voltage from the battery.
