Do you know how much time was allotted to the VAZ-2121 SUV? Until 2006. Shortly before its 30th anniversary, the legendary Niva was supposed to retire. But I didn’t go - the demand was not falling. In 2009, the car underwent a very deep technical update. Everyone thought it was the latter. No! For the 35th anniversary, the SUV, now hiding behind the unpronounceable name “Four by Four” (since the rights to the name Niva were famously seized by the Americans from GM), again underwent a course of rejuvenation.

This rejuvenation is the result of a small victorious war of the new VAZ president, a Swede by birth, Bo Andersson. It was he who proposed to quickly create an “urban version” of the “old Niva” according to a simple recipe: easy correction of appearance, implantation of modern options, etc. refusal of the “downgrade”. This is how the Lada 4×4 Urban appeared, the production of which was undertaken by the court company VIS-Auto. (Although now the release is being transferred to the main conveyor).

And it seems like nothing tricky, but the car is in great demand! We tried for several months to get Urban for testing. And when they got it. We were completely disappointed, even though we didn’t have to call a tow truck in Gatchina cheaply. This is the most ordinary “old Niva”! Only hung with plastic and equipped with air conditioning. Even the downshift remained. Therefore, it is not surprising that the new version is chosen by old fans of the model, although the Swede planned to win off some customers. at Chevrolet Niva and Renault Duster.

What Duster? What kind of "Shniva"? Yes, the Lada 4×4 Urban looks cool from the outside - a sort of nostalgic retro style. But inside there is already nostalgia with tears in my eyes. The doors slam shut with the familiar Zhiguli clatter, transmission control levers protrude from the central tunnel, and the microclimate is regulated by an ancient system of three sliders, next to which the “toggle switch” for turning on the air conditioning is located. And it all looks extremely bad.

Among the traces of “urbanization,” we noticed a more compact and convenient steering wheel, as well as a trim on the central tunnel, which housed a pair of cup holders and buttons for controlling the windows and mirrors. The promised “new chairs” (with heating, by the way) turned out to be reupholstered with old “eight” ones - they are betrayed by the frame reinforcement, which persistently presses on the back. Although, thanks to different padding, the seats became more comfortable.

But it was not possible to muffle the SUV with improved sound insulation: the transfer case howls, the heater hums, and as soon as the speed exceeds 90 km/h, the wind begins to sing loudly and annoyingly. They didn’t fight vibration at all: the innate misalignment of the gearbox and the transfer case, mounted on only two supports, is an eternal source of terrible vibrations, which the VAZ team unsuccessfully tries to pacify with CV joints on the intermediate shaft and dual bearings on the output shafts.

But all these considerations fade when the car gets into operational space. It is off-road that is the native element for the urban “Urban”. Poor salon? Creepy vibrations? But it has perfect geometry and honest all-wheel drive. Scatter, crossover-fuckers, a real SUV is coming! Even with plastic bumpers. And if you cut down the gear, you can even forget that a rickety 1.7-liter engine is hidden under the short hood, since there is enough traction always and everywhere.

However, after an intoxicating “grip” through a sand quarry, the understanding comes that even the outstanding off-road capabilities of the “old Niva” continue to remain undeveloped. See for yourself. The accelerator pedal travel is too small to properly dose traction. The gearbox and transfer case control levers are completely devoid of feedback. The “center” lock does not engage if the car is parked at a slight angle.

All these shortcomings should have been eliminated during the 2009 modernization. But then the VAZ bosses allocated only 150 million rubles (in order to make a “Priora” from the “top ten”, the VAZ team also generously spent 150 million, but in euros), and therefore the engineers had to carefully set priorities. And the suspension became such a priority. This is how steering knuckles and lower control arms from the Chevrolet Niva, other rebound and compression buffers and long-stroke shock absorbers appeared.

Now the suspension is the main advantage of the old woman after cross-country ability. You don’t have to slow down in front of potholes: without bumps and dives on completely broken roads you can drive at a speed of “hundreds” - you won’t catch up! But only on poor surfaces. As soon as decent asphalt begins, the Niva becomes an outsider - 83 “horses” and 128 “Newtons” with a 1210 kg curb weight are barely enough to accelerate to 100 km/h in 17 (!) seconds.

In general, despite the Urban prefix, Lada 4x4 continues to remain a guest from the past. Tiny trunk, rear seats suitable only for children, backwardness of most technical solutions (like a worm-wheel steering mechanism). And absolutely indecent quality of parts, as well as an extremely low level of passive safety. You need to understand: it is impossible to make a modern car out of the “old Niva” with just “design from Steve Mattin”.

Required set of tools

  • Sheet metal 3 mm. (dimensions depend on the chosen bumper shape and Niva model);
  • Cardboard (will be used to make a template);
  • A grinder saw with a sufficient supply of discs;
  • Welding apparatus;

You can replace the metal with a 150 mm profile pipe. width with thickness 3-4 mm. It's a matter of appearance and personal preference. In addition to everything you will need:

  • Scotch;

  • Scissors;
  • Marker;

Assembling the power bumper frame for Niva

The durability of Niva bumpers will be the envy of many similar cars. But, unfortunately, as a result of a strong blow, even such a durable structure can be replaced.

In order to remove the rear bumper on a Niva, you need the following tool:

  • Head 22
  • Strong and long collar
  • Extension
  • Ratchet

You will need to remove it completely with the fasteners, since I personally was not able to unscrew it from them. Because it is impossible to reach from below with a long wrench, and with a short wrench it is impossible to unscrew such large nuts. Therefore, it is easier to remove it with the mounting brackets - that is, unscrew one bolt on each side where it is attached to the side members.

So, first of all, we spray grease on the bolts, since they are completely soured.

We wait a few minutes and, using a powerful and long lever, unscrew the bolts.

If the connections are a little loose, you can use a ratchet handle to do this much faster:

When the bolts on both sides are removed, the bumper no longer holds anything and you can try to pull it out. To do this, we take it seriously and try to remove it with brackets from the holes in the body on each side:

With the rear bumper removed from the vehicle, you can now detach it from its brackets. Since there are no other obstacles and access to the bolts and nuts is free, this can be done very quickly. Again, I recommend spraying it with WD or a similar lubricant first, since these connections will rust completely!

Installation or replacement with a new one is carried out in the reverse order of removal. The price of a new rear bumper assembly for a Niva is approximately 1,200 rubles, including the linings. And the brackets are sold separately, and they cost around 150 rubles.

The rear bumpers and methods of attaching them are different for the regular Niva 4×4 and the Urban.

Similarly, unscrew the bolt securing the bumper connector to the left rear side member. We remove the rear bumper and rubber seals in the same way as the front ones.

Having finished with the front, we move on to the rear. The first thing I didn’t like was the protruding bumper and towbar, as well as the flimsy attachment of the bumper to the car.

We remove the bumper, there is no rot and that’s it!)

We again take a 50/50 thick-walled profile and push it in instead of pipes. We weld it to the spar with a continuous seam. We take a corner and weld it onto the transverse spar (where the shock absorbers are attached). Next, we connect the profile and the corner with a square pipe.

Next, we take a corner and bend it under the stock bumper, welding it along the bottom.

After installing the bumper, we shorten the towbar and hang the towbar as high as possible with minimal protrusion.

The result is minimal overhangs and a power bumper. We transfer the trailer socket to the bumper itself so that it does not tear it off after each trip)

The bumper is attached to the corner through eye bolts M16 and towbar mounts... The design turned out to be strong and not heavy... All kinds of tests have already been carried out: I pulled out a Patriot, Pajero 3, Cherokee and that's it!

Installing the rear bumper is done in the reverse order. Here it is also worth using the services of an assistant, since the rear bumper is also partially attached to plastic latches. It is forbidden. But only if the kenguryatnik is not provided for by the design. Clause 7.18 of the Basic Provisions of the Traffic Regulations states that it is prohibited to make changes to the design of the car without registering them with the traffic police.

The Niva and most other SUVs and crossovers are precisely vehicles on which the plant has never installed guardrails, unless we are talking about a single or specially designed model for special operating conditions, but, as far as we know, there have never been any in history.

Stop! A kenguryatnik is not a structure!

“making changes to the design of a vehicle” is the exclusion of components and equipment not provided for by the design of a particular vehicle, made after the vehicle is put into circulation and affecting road safety.

Kenguryatnik - equipment? Yes. Does it affect road safety? And how! Not for the safety of the driver, but of the pedestrian in the event of a head-on collision with the latter. What if you register it with the traffic police?

We have already described the procedure for registering changes made in our special article about this. Laconically, this is quite expensive and time-consuming: you need to undergo an examination in general for this possibility, obtain permission based on its result, then make changes, but only in an organization that has a license for this, then go through the examination again, receive a certificate and only then register the whole thing at the traffic police department.

But even if you decide on such a procedure, you will be disappointed at the first stage - you will not receive permission to install a guardrail, because it directly affects road safety and is prohibited. This design change cannot be officially registered.

What to do?

In fact, there is nothing to do if, as we noted above, kengurin is not installed from the factory. First of all, find out if your SUV model comes with it. This is only relevant for fairly old models, since new ones are simply prohibited from being imported into Russia with a guard due to the same non-compliance with the Technical Regulations.

Preliminary preparation for dismantling

Before you start removing the bumper on a Chevrolet Niva, you need to study all the design features of this structural element of the car. The fact is that it is made of 90% plastic. Such plastic may be reinforced in some cases, but not in others. It all depends on what kind of restaling the manufacturer carried out on the Chevrolet Niva. Changes also came to the console of the central tunnel. Wide cup holders and electric window control buttons appeared there. It is unclear what prevented the creators from making these buttons on the doors. But thanks for that too. Above these buttons there is a joystick for adjusting the mirrors. The steering wheel in the Urbana has become smaller in diameter and more comfortable to grip (380 versus 420 mm in the Niva). Otherwise, the car has retained Russian pragmatism. Nothing extra.

How to install bumpers on a Lada 4×4 Urban at the factory

You will need to buy a body kit or in parts. Part numbers:

  1. cut down the guide pipes in the place where the bolts pass;
  2. make holes in the wings for the side mounting of the bumper;
  3. remove the chamfer so that the gaps between the bumper and the body are within tolerance (3±1.5 mm).

Such tuning of the Lada 4x4 will make it more attractive, but less practical off-road.
