At the beginning of 2022, VAZ conducted surveys of users of cars with an AMT robot, probably noticing that many complaints were coming from car owners living in megacities, who are under the threat of regularly getting stuck in traffic jams, where the gearbox shows not entirely favorable “behavior.” And all this is due to the lack of the so-called “creeping mode”.

If we consider the conditions of being stuck in traffic jams, there are only two types of traffic jams:

1. The first type is a standing traffic jam, where traffic occurs in the mode: drive 5-10 meters and stop. In this mode, judging by the reviews, the gearbox robot behaves quite well: the driver pressed the gas pedal - it moved smoothly and began to move, released the gas pedal - it stopped.
2. The second type of traffic jam is when the flow of traffic moves at walking speed, where the notorious “creeping mode” is required. In this case, it is difficult for the driver to select the engine speed not in the first gear of the gearbox in order to move synchronously with the flow of cars in a traffic jam, since when adding gas, the gearbox takes a pause while the car is still rolling, and then begins sharp acceleration, while the driver releases the gas pedal and clutch turns off, etc. If you look from the side, the car moves jerkily.

According to yet unconfirmed information, it is precisely this problem of the AMT’s lack of a “creeping mode” that the VAZ developers plan to solve.

Interior

The interior of the XRAY can be called laconic rather than budget-friendly. It is not overloaded with buttons and unnecessary elements. Even the seat heating buttons are in the blind spot and do not interfere with the eye.

You also don’t need buttons to control the media system – there is a touch screen. However, under the thumb of the right hand on the steering wheel there is a block of keys. The steering wheel is also perfectly adjustable in height, and a comfortable grip is designed for the fingers. There is no adjustment for reach, but you can adjust the driver's seat so that it is comfortable to sit.

The numbers on the dashboard are easy to read, and there is an on-board computer with a lot of necessary gadgets, including the outside temperature. The storage problem is also well resolved in the cabin - there is a drawer under the front seat, spacious pockets on the doors, and cup holders are provided on the console in the center.

There are no complaints about the assembly of the interior: the gaps are even, the structural elements do not move, there is no rattling. The finish is quite decent to the touch and visually.

The profile of the seats, as always, is not the best: the seats are flat, the cushion is short, and there is no lumbar support. Your back will get tired on long trips. A family of four can comfortably fit inside the cabin. In the rear seats, thanks to the slightly reclined seat backs, two adults and, even more so, children will be moderately comfortable. However, the third one there will be clearly superfluous.

Right to certainty

A safe car is one that is visible on the road. LADA XRAY will never get lost in traffic, thanks to bright LED daytime running lights. The LED strip also performs a styling function, highlighting the chrome “X” of the front end.

Test Drive

Before XRAY, AvtoVAZ did not make crossovers. We can safely say that the XRAY is a compact urban crossover with front-wheel drive. The car turned out to be tightly built, with a high hood and a massive rear end.

Even the basic version of the model comes with 16-inch wheels. The high ground clearance of 195 mm only emphasizes the seriousness of the model.

Body coating thickness

Now it’s worth taking a closer look at the thickness of the body covering. Only high-quality paint can prevent premature corrosion of the metal and aging of the car as a whole. The hatchback body design is designed in the updated corporate style of LADA, called X-Style due to its characteristic features. As a rule, after running-in, the robot and the driver adapt to each other. The driver already automatically starts the engine from the neutral position of the lever and simultaneously presses the brakes. Gear changes have returned to normal and become shifts without interruption in the power flow or without “jerking”.

Some reviews regarding the “behavior” of the robot after running-in recommend not to “fall” on the gas pedal when starting to move, trying to quickly gain speed to switch from the initial speed to the next one. This manipulation does not give the desired effect, however, the transition from second gear to third and subsequent transitions will be carried out much faster, unless, of course, you reduce engine speed by releasing the gas pedal.

In traffic, it is recommended to accelerate within the appropriate gear for the traffic flow, which makes driving as economical as possible. In this case, the gas pedal can be used to control the robot, indicating the engine speed at which switches it needs to make.

Technical characteristics of Lada XRay Crossover

The car is designed for use in difficult road conditions, it has good dynamics and excellent handling. The crossover's increased ground clearance and energy-intensive suspension provide a fairly high level of cross-country ability. The vehicle is characterized by maneuverability due to the use of an engine subframe and gas-filled shock absorbers.

Particular attention is paid to safety issues; a number of active systems are installed on the car:

• ESC - directional stability.
• ABS - anti-lock braking system.
• BAS - Brake Assist.
• TCS - traction control.
• EBD - brake force distribution.

The LADA XRAY crossover is equipped with airbags for the driver and front passenger. This, coupled with belts equipped with a pretensioner, allows you to avoid injuries during emergency braking or an accident. The 1.8 liter 5MT version of the model has the best dynamic performance, capable of reaching speeds of up to 185 km/h, and will accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 10.4 seconds. At the same time, the car can run on 92 or 95 gasoline and consumes no more than 7.2 l/100 km in the combined cycle.

Paint quality

This indicator is very important in AvtoVAZ cars. After all, many should remember that in previous models, corrosion on the metal appeared even before the car’s warranty expired. Now, the domestic manufacturer promises that all problems associated with corrosion are a thing of the past. He informed us that strict requirements are imposed on the quality of Lada X-ray painting. Here are some of them:

1. Resistance to various weather factors, which are expressed in temperature changes, high humidity, etc.
2. Resistance to mechanical irritants: dust, pebbles, sand, etc.

LADA XRAY is produced by the Togliatti automobile plant in eleven modifications, which differ in the level of equipment. The manufacturer offers three main configuration options for the crossover:

• Standard. The basic version is equipped with LED running lights, a security alarm and an immobilizer.
• Classic. It is produced in two versions: with and without air conditioning, it is possible to disable the passenger airbag.
• Comfort. There are three trim levels and in the maximum version the car is equipped with an audio system, a multifunction steering wheel and central locking with remote control.
• Luxe. Two options. The car is equipped with exterior mirrors with direction indicators and 16-inch alloy wheels.
• Luxe/Prestige. There are three versions, while the top version is equipped with rear view cameras, rain sensors and a climate control system.

The color range of LADA XRAY crossovers is varied: the basic equipment cars are mostly white (“Glacial”). For red, gray-beige, brown, black and silver metallics you will have to pay an additional 12 thousand rubles.
