How to install an electric antifreeze heater

First, the plug is removed from the cooling system, and hoses are put on the heater pipes. The liquid is drained from the engine, the heating device is installed and fixed. After attaching the hoses, antifreeze is refilled, and an outlet is installed on the car body to connect to the network.

Then special cables connect the control unit, the system itself, and the connector. After the entire installation, it is necessary to check the insulation and tightness of the entire system, connect to the network, and check its functionality.

Webasto installation features

Of course, the autonomous option is more convenient. One of the most common systems of this kind today is the product of Webasto. There shouldn’t be any particular difficulties connecting it, but having certain skills will still come in handy. Before proceeding directly to the installation, you need to do preliminary work, which consists of removing the battery, air filter, absorber, rear seat and fuel tank flap. However, that's not all. You will also need to remove the engine crankcase protection and open the fuel tank cap for ventilation.

The heater itself is mounted in a vertical position. In the engine compartment, the best option for placing it is on the shock absorber strut, to the left (in the direction of travel) of the battery.

When connecting to a liquid circuit, you need to follow a few simple rules. In particular, the hoses should be laid straight, avoiding kinks, and the tightening torque of the clamps should be 2+05 Nm. Also have some kind of container ready to catch any leaking coolant.

Next, we connect the heater to the exhaust gas removal system. One point worth noting here. Everyone probably knows that exhaust gases heat up to a high temperature, so the pipeline must be laid so that it does not touch the plastic and rubber parts of the car. After this, you can connect to the car’s fuel system. Gasoline will be collected from the “ten” using a special tee - it is included in the device and is connected to the fuel drain.

At this stage of work there are also points that require special attention. In particular, protection against abrasion of the fuel line should be provided. In addition, it must certainly be laid in such a way that there is the greatest possible protection from the ingress of foreign objects. Do not leave hanging areas - everything must be secured using plastic fasteners on the elements of the car body.

When installing the fuel metering pump, pay attention to the correct positioning. To ensure reliable and durable operation of this unit, it is recommended to install a fine filter in front of it. When connecting, make sure that the fuel pipe fits into the fitting end-to-end.

When placing the control unit, select the cleanest and driest location for it. Next you need to make the electrical connections:

  • to the heater controller;
  • timer display backlight.

After this, you can attach the Webasto fuses, ground, and connect the power.
Next, we perform another simple procedure. The wiring harness should be connected to the heater. To do this, remove the plastic cover from it and insert the plug blocks into the special sockets. The best option for installing a timer in the cabin is considered to be the place where the standard clock is located. They should be removed from the container, after which all that remains is to do a few simple manipulations. In particular, make a hole for the timer, insert the 8-pin plug into the corresponding socket, and then secure the device itself. That's all - all that remains is to connect the battery and return all previously dismantled elements to their original position. More detailed connection instructions are included with the device. As you can see, the work itself is not that difficult. All you need is attentiveness, a little time, and strict adherence to the instructions.

How the system works

If the car is not used for a long time in frosty weather, the engine oil, which serves as the main substance to prevent wear of parts, hardens. In these cases, antifreeze heating is used. Installing such a device is quite simple, so car owners most often do it themselves.

When choosing an electric heater, the type, size or displacement of the engine is taken into account.

All types of preheating work on almost the same principle. Through a small hole, the antifreeze enters the heating system, the temperature of the antifreeze rises, and then it passes through the outlet hole directly to the engine. Electric heating of the antifreeze is carried out in the housing, gradually circulating, thereby heating all the antifreeze. The maximum temperature is 70 degrees.

Then the antifreeze is refilled and the car starts. After a while, the engine begins to heat up, reaching the temperature required for operation.

Installing engine heating using heating elements

Next, you will need to unscrew the temperature sensor, and then install a tee fitting in its place. In this unit, in turn, we insert a temperature sensor and an outlet for the hose through which heated antifreeze will be supplied from the heater.

Now all that remains is to do a few simple operations. In particular, you need to unscrew the drain plug on the cylinder block, installing instead a hose outlet through which cold antifreeze will flow into the heater. That's practically all. All that remains is to install clamps on both hoses.
