Hi all. Such a misfortune happened. At one point, the wipers simply stopped working. The first thought is the fuse. I'll go under the hood and the corresponding fuse will burn out. I put another one on and it immediately burns out. Another one - the same. I disconnect the contact from the motor, install a fuse, just connect the contact - it burns out. OK. Due to very strict necessity and knowing some of the peculiarities of the Russian “maybe”, I take a screwdriver and with the side of the handle I lightly tap the motor from all possible sides. I set the fuse, connect the motor - silence. I turn on the wipers and they work! That's the end of the fairy tale. And whoever fixed it is a great guy. The horseradish was there... We are not in a fairy tale.
The next day the same bullshit. And as luck would have it, we had such a rainy week. I open the hood and carry out “repairs” according to a well-established scheme. Horseradish. Okay... I'm going to work as is. And I have to tell you, in the rain and without wipers - a specific pleasure...
In the evening I decide to replace the motor because I can’t live like this any longer. But, having learned the price of 3000 rubles
, a week of waiting and looking into the family budget, I understand that
this little engine is not so bad
+))) Why bury it ahead of time?+)))
I am attempting DIY repair #1.
Although a repairman makes me like a rheumatologist from a gopnik. So that you understand, I looked at the windshield wiper motor for the first time in my life. No, I'm not blonde. I just don’t like tinkering with cars and do it extremely rarely and only in the most critical situations.
Attention. This is my first time performing this trick. There may be easier ways to remove it, but I didn't know about them.
Before you start repairing, read the article to the end!
Removal:
1.
Remove both wipers.
2.
Remove the plastic parts that surround the wipers. To do this, using a flat screwdriver, remove the rubber seal that goes through both plastic parts and is attached to the pistons. Next, the right part is lifted and the left one is taken out from under it (in the direction of travel). There is simply a piston hidden under the right part that secures the left part.
3.
Through the space between the open hood and the windshield on the driver's side we see the mechanism for attaching the motor leash with a trapezoid (metal parts that drive the wipers). Carefully remove the end of the trapezoid from the leash with your hand (it’s called a trapezoid, right?+)))).
4.
By hand, with force in one direction or another, we turn the motor driver (the metal part attached to the nut) to the vertical upward position.
5.
On the other hand, from the engine compartment, unscrew the motor itself. There are four bolts.
With the motor removed:
We analyze everything that can be understood. We watch everything and everywhere. And we put it back. Check - it works! But not for long. About a day. Why? Who knows…
I give up.
I’m going to take the motor for diagnostics to the same service center that recently installed a new generator for me.
Verdict - replacement motor. The electric motor itself is working properly, but a hole has formed on the plastic gear, into which one of the contacts falls and jams the movement of the motor. And even if you are careful, even just a little bit, there is no way to fix it.
No way. Somehow they explained everything to me in this spirit.
Having reviewed my budget again, I understand that I have nothing to lose now
, but I still have hope for a bright future.
“Why am I not Russian or what?”
I'm making another attempt to repair the motor.
Because at the moment I already know all the features of the breakdown.
As an experienced master, in 5 minutes I remove the motor and take it home.
At home, upon a detailed inspection, the words of the service technician begin to reach me. Indeed, under the plastic casing in the area of the metal contact ring, “caries” has formed in one place on the inner circle. A small hole into which the contact fell. When you figure it out, you will understand everything yourself.
Well, if you have caries, then you need to get a filling.
Plastic seal. There is still no way out.
I hope everyone at least once in their life melted some kind of plastic and dripped it onto the asphalt, the legs of their comrades and other objects?+)))
It was decided to stupidly bury the “caries” with molten plastic
and clean the area with sandpaper.
We are preparing a cleaning kit consisting of a shot glass with vodka, women's cotton pads, cotton swabs, and various tools in the form of thin screwdrivers.
1.
Remove the metal contact ring.
2.
Feel free to remove the old grease using cotton pads and napkins.
3.
We very carefully scrub off the “caries” with cotton swabs dipped in vodka. Because if you drip plastic onto an oiled part, it will not stick to the part.
4.
Gradually carefully dig up the plastic. For the material I used white plastic ties. The plastic in them is quite durable and fusible.
5.
Using sandpaper, we grind off the excess plastic deposit until a smooth surface is formed and the contact can slide unhindered.
The wipers stopped working - we find out and eliminate the cause
Poor quality work of any component and element of your car is not just discomfort during the trip, but also a certain irritating factor. Every time you have to deal with the fact that some piece of technology does not work in a decent way and does not offer a high enough quality of functioning. This is especially difficult for idealists, for whom everything should work at the highest level and without problems. One of the most annoying problems is the failure of the wipers. If the windshield wipers stop working, wave randomly, or stop when the control knob is turned off right in the middle of the glass, you should think about possible problems. Here we should highlight several main components that can break. Trapezoid, wiper fuse, intermittent wiper relay, power handle and other elements.
You can find the cause yourself, or also seek help from specialized forums where similar problems are discussed. Often on forums you will find the same symptoms of a problem and you can easily repair your car. If the wipers stop working, you will have to do something quickly. Otherwise, you will have to experience significant difficulties when traveling in rainy or simply wet weather. In winter, the inability to clean the glass from sticking dirt and constantly sticking snow will simply not allow you to drive normally. You will have to stop every two minutes and clean the windshield. Let's look at the most common problems with wipers in modern cars.
Trapezoid - the mechanism for direct operation of the wipers
One of the most complex mechanisms in the wiper system kit is the trapezoid. Today, no car manufacturer has such a reliable wiper drive mechanism to guarantee long-term operation of the device. Banal jamming of brushes or excessive emphasis on the glass, improper activation of the wipers, freezing to the glass in winter - all these reasons can be detrimental to the trapezoid. Among the possibilities for restoring this mechanism, it is worth highlighting only a few possible steps:
- purchasing a new trapezoid is often the best step for domestic cars, in which the wiper mechanism costs about 1000-1500 rubles;
- for foreign cars, purchasing a new trapezoid will cost exorbitant amounts of money, so in this case, repairs should be made and broken parts restored;
- Often the bushings and tips in trapezoids fail, which are often plastic and are terribly resistant to frost, so they can simply be replaced;
- if it is not easy to find a repair kit for a trapezoid for your car, you can try installing bushings and other parts from other cars of a similar class;
- Direct replacement of the trapezoid is necessary if even repair work does not eliminate the problem, or after repair the mechanism begins to tap during operation.
Operating principle and purpose of the motor
The windshield wiper motor is one of the main components of the entire system. Its purpose is to ensure the movement of the brushes along the windshield and rear window (if we are talking about a hatchback or station wagon). The windshield wiper motor itself supports operation in several modes - slow, intermittent, and the fastest.
In general, the design of the wipers includes an electric wiper motor with a gearbox, a unit that returns the blades to their place, as well as levers and the brushes themselves. As a rule, a washer device also functions with the brushes, providing water supply to the glass. The windshield wiper motor itself is considered one of the most unreliable components, which fails quite often.
Measuring the length of the brushes
In order for the wipers to clear the windshield from one edge to the other, it is important to choose the right length. If your car has factory wipers, just measure them with a tape measure.
Take the time to measure both wipers, as some car models have different lengths. Typically, the driver's side has a longer brush. If the lengths are different, you will have to buy windshield wipers individually of different sizes. They are the same for many models. For example, the wipers on the Lada Priora are both 51 cm long. You can buy a set of two pieces. By the way, manufacturers indicate the length in centimeters and inches. For example, 17 inches is 43 cm.
What to do if your car has non-factory wipers? This happens when the previous owner of the car installed products that are not suitable in size. For example, if they are too long, then the edge of the rubber gets on the body and rides up - the brush does not fully adhere to the glass and does not clean it at all. And there are also short rubber bands that do not reach the edges of the windshield - dirty stains remain there and dry out with a gray frame. In such cases, it is better to find out the factory parameters of the brushes.
Based on the most popular requests from car enthusiasts, we have compiled two tables in which we have collected examples of car models with recommended parameters for windshield wiper blades. For convenience, we divided them into Russian-made cars and foreign cars.
Video “Detailed instructions for repairing an electric motor at home”
A detailed guide on the topic of repairing the wiper motor is given in the video below (the author of the video is the Auto Electrician HF channel).
The windshield cleaning system on your car should be serviced periodically. This is necessary for its proper operation, because the system can fail at the most inopportune moment. To prevent this from happening, you need to follow a few simple recommendations. Let's look at how the wiper motor is serviced and repaired, what are the weak points of the system and what to pay attention to first.
Possible windshield wiper malfunctions and repair methods
Fault Remedy
The wiper motor does not work, the fuse in the mounting block is working:
Wires are damaged, oxidized or their tips are loose - Crimp the tips, replace the faulty wires
Faulty steering column switch - Replace the faulty wiper switch
The electric motor brushes are stuck, the commutator is very dirty or burnt - Eliminate the stuck brushes, clean the commutator or replace the gear motor
Break in the armature winding of the electric motor - Replace the gear motor
Auxiliary relay faulty - Replace relay
The wiper motor does not work, the fuse protecting the wiper circuit in the mounting block blows:
The brushes are frozen to the glass - After turning off the cleaner, carefully separate the brushes from the glass, make sure that the rubber scraper is intact, and restore the mobility of the brush joints
Wiper blades touch body parts - Check that the arms are installed correctly, straighten deformed arms or replace the wiper
Short circuit in the motor winding - Replace the gear motor
The wiper motor does not operate intermittently:
The wiper relay is faulty - Replace the relay
The steering column switch is faulty - Replace the faulty switch
The wiper motor does not stop intermittently:
The wiper relay is faulty - Replace the relay
The petals of the limit switch do not press well against the gear of the gearmotor - Bend the contact petals of the limit switch
The contacts of the limit switch are oxidized or burnt - Clean the contacts or replace the purifier gear motor
The brushes stop in any position:
The nut securing the crank to the axle is loose - Having correctly installed the crank, tighten the nut
The contact petals of the limit switch do not press well against the gear of the gear motor - Bend the contact petals of the limit switch
The brushes do not work synchronously:
The lever of one of the brushes on the shaft is loose - Install the brush in the desired position and tighten the lever securing nut
The wiper motor works, but the brushes do not move:
The nut securing the crank on the gear axis of the gear motor is loose - Having correctly installed the crank, tighten the nut
Gear teeth are chipped - Replace the gear motor

Are the rods the wiper arms or the leash?
Do I hit the brushes on the counter? ¶
Well then everything is clear.
It’s just that before replacing, you should have noticed the position of the gearbox shaft on the trapezoid body, you didn’t do that, and that’s why this shit happened now ¶
Replacing the windshield wiper gear motor
Remove the “-” terminal of the battery. Use a marker or felt-tip pen to mark the position of the blades on the windshield.
Use a screwdriver to pry it off and remove the plastic cap.
Unscrew the nut securing the brush lever
Remove the leash along with the brush from the shaft
We also remove the second leash.
Using a wrench, unscrew the two screws securing the right and left facings
We take out the plug for the screw securing the left facing using a screwdriver and unscrew the two screws securing the right and left facings
Removing the left facing
Slide the motor wiring block to the right and remove it from the holder
Having released the block clamp, disconnect the block of the wiper gear motor from the wiring block.
Use a 10mm socket to unscrew the two bolts and a 10mm wrench to unscrew the cleaner mounting nut.
We take out the windshield wiper with gear motor assembly
Use a felt-tip pen to mark the position of the crank relative to the wiper bracket.
Using a 13mm wrench, unscrew the crank mounting nut and remove the crank from the gearmotor shaft
Unscrew the three bolts securing the gear motor to the purifier bracket
Remove the gear motor from the bracket
Remove the protective film from the gear motor
Use a screwdriver to unscrew the four screws
Remove the gearbox cover with gasket
If necessary, we replace the gears of the gear motor and clean the contacts of the self-stop mechanism.
We assemble and install the gear motor on the purifier bracket in the reverse order.
To install the gear motor shaft in its original position, we put the wire terminal on the “negative” terminal of the battery.
We connect the block of wires to the block of the gear motor and turn it on using the steering column switch, then turn it off and wait until the electric motor shaft stops.
In this position of the gear motor shaft, we install the crank along the previously applied mark.
We carry out further installation of the purifier in the reverse order.
Lada Kalina Hatchback -=First car=- › Logbook › The wipers do not work. Problem with gear motor
Hello everyone! I haven’t visited Drive2 for a very long time. I confess, it’s my fault (Several changes have been made to the machine in a few months =) I will write about everything in more detail in separate blog articles.
So, a serious problem suddenly overtook me. I was driving along the highway, it was raining, I turn on the wipers, they do one cycle and freeze forever... With an astonished look, I try to revive the wipers, but they are silent. I pull over to the side of the road, the first thing I do is check the transmission - everything is ok. I open the hood, visually the rack and the motor are in perfect order... thoughtfully tugging at the contacts near the engine, I took out a cloth, wiped the glass and drove quietly to my destination. I’ll tell you honestly, friends, driving in the rain with non-working windshield wipers is an extreme thing))) God forbid, someone should experience this for themselves.
Old windshield wiper motor
When I arrived home, the first thing I did was contact an electrician. He took the electric motor, simply disassembled it, reassembled it and, connecting it to power, saw that it was alive. I happily put it in its rightful place and went about my business. The next day it rains again. I turn on the wipers, they work very slowly, do 2 cycles and die again. This time I already knew roughly what the problem was, so I didn’t stop, and having already practiced extreme driving without wipers in the rain, I went to an electrician. He was again “glad” to see me with a gear motor in my hands. He took it apart again, replaced all the brushes, cleaned the contacts and the engine came to life again. When the electrician returned this engine to me, he said the phrase: “If it dies again, it’s better to buy a new one.” Well, the man looked at nothing - after 2 weeks the motor died again. It was decided to replace this piece of hardware.
New gear motor, which, unfortunately, did not fit.
I arrive at the local Phaeton auto parts store. I’m buying a gear motor for Kalina for 1,900 rubles, the toad, of course, is choking, but there’s nothing to do, you can’t drive like that in the rain. At the delivery of goods they give you a motor without a box, documents and even with a small scratch on the lid. When I asked where the equipment was, the manager replied that the supplier brought them in this form and offered a bag. D When I arrive home, the first thing I do is run to change the motor. I remove the rack, remove the motor, install a new one, connect it to the connectors, and simultaneously check its functionality. I had just started to screw the engine to the mounts when I decided to check whether the rack would fit the new engine, since it differs slightly in size from the factory one. I connect the rail and see that it does not fit the slots at all. There were ideas on how to make it fit, but reason prevailed over flights of fancy and I decided to change the gear motor in the store. 15 minutes later I’m already approaching the store’s checkout counter. As soon as the seller saw me, he asked: “Well, didn’t it fit?” I really wanted to tell him a lot about the low-quality spare parts, but I only said a modest: “Yes, can I replace it?” The store manager said that my case is not the first and that gear motors come from the factory with two types of splines - large and small. I came across just a small one, but they didn’t have a large one in stock, so I wrote a statement and my money was returned.
A box with a new gear motor =) You can immediately see that this is the original.
I drove home upset, but on the way I noticed a small store called “Samara”. I go there, there is a young girl at the checkout who happily helped me choose the right gear motor. Moreover, I got it in a branded box, with quality control marks, a guarantee and instructions for connecting, and even for 1,700 rubles. I was extremely happy when the motor fit without any problems. This is how, for relatively little money and in 3 hours of total time, I got rid of the problem with non-working wipers.
Comparison of two motors - on the right is the factory one, on the left is the new Samara one.
PS, I saw many topics on the forums with the problem of the wipers not returning to their original position. In fact, the solution is very simple - you need to adjust the splines connecting the rack and the gearmotor. You need to let the motor rotate its axis a full cycle and then insert the rack in the desired position and that’s it, the problem will be solved.

Water as a summer washer fluid
Many car enthusiasts in the summer do not consider it necessary to use special products and replace these special compounds with ordinary tap water. But this is fundamentally wrong. The fact is that water, even clean water, contains a lot of elements that can react with air. Air, in turn, also contains a huge number of elements from the periodic table.
Due to foreign impurities, water can contribute to the formation of various oxides and salts that clog the injectors.
Water can also cause other technical problems in the windshield washer system. It often happens that the gearmotor fails and the system can become unstable. Windshield wiper blades often fail.
Possible causes of the malfunction and ways to eliminate them:
When the windshield wiper is on, the electric drive does not work:
Fuse blown:
- remove the cover located to the left of the driver, under the steering column, under it there is a mounting block;
- on the cover of the mounting block there is a diagram of the location of the relays and fuses of the car, we find the required fuse and change it if necessary;
Relay fault:
If the wipers on the Lada Kalina do not work intermittently, you need to change the relay located in the mounting block, next to the fuses.
Wiper motor malfunction:
- we check the ground terminal of the electric motor, screwed to the car body next to the rack;
- we clean it and the attachment point;
- install in place;
VAZ 1117 If this does not have a result, disconnect the connector for the electric drive of the windshield wiper, located under the windshield frame.
Using a tester or any other continuity test, we check whether power is coming to the connector. If power comes in, then it is necessary to change the wiper motor.
Disconnect the terminals from the battery. Remove the decorative caps from the leashes. Unscrew the nuts securing the leads and remove them. Remove the plastic grille under the windshield frame by unscrewing the bolts that secure it. Having unscrewed the trapezoid fastening (two bolts and one nut), remove the electric motor from the box and disconnect it from the trapezoid. We install a new one, repeating the procedure in reverse order.
If power does not come to the connector, the steering column switch must be replaced. Disconnect the battery terminals. Remove the plastic steering column cover. Disconnect the switch block and, pressing the latches on both sides, remove the steering column wiper switch. Install a new one by repeating the process in reverse order. Assembling the casing.
When turned on, the wipers on Kalina do not work, but the electric drive rotates
It is necessary to check the condition of the gearbox and wiper trapezoid.
Unscrew the plastic grill under the windshield frame. First remove the wiper arms and unscrew the nuts that secure them. We check whether the gearbox axis of the electric windshield wiper drive rotates.
If the axis rotates and the trapezoid is stationary, check the splined connection of the gearbox and trapezoid, and if necessary, tighten the fastening nut. If the connection is severely worn, it is necessary to replace this unit.
If your windshield wipers on your Lada Kalina do not work, this is not a reason to despair. As a rule, the cause is a minor malfunction. Such as a blown fuse or a loose nut on the spline connection between the gearbox and the windshield wiper drive, which can simply be tightened.
The windshield wiper electric drive system is quite reliable and does not require special maintenance. It is enough to follow basic operating rules. If during the winter period the wipers are frozen to the windshield, then before turning on the windshield wiper, it is necessary to free them from ice. And they will serve you without causing any problems.
Removing the windshield wiper mechanism completely is quite an easy job, for this we need 10 by 13 heads, a ratchet, a knob, a 10 and 13 ring spanner, you can also use an open-end wrench.
First of all, you need to get down to work on removing the wiper arms and plastic linings; detailed information on removing the plastic linings can be read here: Replacing the cabin filter on a Lada Kalina.
If you have sorted out the removal of the plastic covers, we proceed to the process of unscrewing the trapezoid mounting bolts. First, unscrew it on the left, as shown in the picture.
Then in the center.
After this, unscrew the nut on the right side; for this it is better to arm yourself with an open-end wrench.
Now there is nothing holding the trapeze, you need to slightly tilt it forward.
We take it out of the seat.
The final step when removing is to disconnect the power plug of the motor. To do this, you just need to bend the plug lock and remove the plug. First you need to disconnect it from the body; the plug is attached to a clip.
Removing and installing the windshield wiper motor on Lada Kalina
The motor is connected to the trapezoid by 3 bolts and one nut. So we unscrew the 3 bolts using a 10mm socket.
After this, unscrew the nut securing the trapezoid and the motor shaft.
You can remove the motor, since there are no more fasteners.
If there is a need, we replace the trapezoid or motor and assemble it in the reverse order.
Let's sum it up
Such an important process as replacing wipers, or when changing the windshield wiper trapezoid on a LADA Kalina car, is a very simple undertaking. There is no need for special devices or fancy tools. The brushes are removed by opening the locks.
Repairing or replacing a part such as a windshield wiper trapezium appears as a more responsible job, but it is not capable of causing difficulties for an inexperienced owner of a Lada Kalina. In such situations, do not hesitate to take action.
When is it necessary to replace windshield wipers in Kalina?
Over time, owners of practical Lada Kalinas notice the appearance of brush marks on the surface of the windshield. Such “artifacts” create an obstacle to good visibility. In this situation, the indicated components will need to be replaced, and the trapezoid will likely need to be replaced
Many experienced owners advise purchasing frameless brushes, which, in their opinion, are able to “bravely” withstand temperature changes and can demonstrate a relatively longer service life of approximately 1.5 million cycles
Before replacing, you should understand the required size of the products. For Lada Kalina, you should purchase a driver's side brush with a length of 600 mm, and for the glass area opposite the passenger - 400 mm. For stern glass, the brush has a standard parameter of 360 mm. This wiper needs to be replaced much less frequently, since the intensity of its work is significantly lower compared to the front components.
Rubber seals
Gaskets and seals are made of rubber. Over time, they lose their positive properties. Due to temperature changes, they become tanned and crack; this also happens due to an aggressive environment. For this simple reason, seals need to be changed periodically.
If you do not do this, it is quite possible that the device will fail. The next time you service the glass cleaning system, it is advisable to change the seals and rubber gaskets.
Don't forget that the wiper blades themselves are also rubber and should also be checked regularly. Often replacement is performed once a year. If the brushes are made of silicone and of high quality, then they can last a couple of years, but hardly more. This is due, again, to temperature changes.
When do you need to change wipers on Kalina?
It often happens that the wiper drive system works, but marks remain on the windshield that interfere with normal visibility. In this case, the wipers need to be replaced. Previously, domestic cars were equipped with brushes, into the frame of which a rubber part was inserted, which cleaned the glass. But recently frameless brushes have been used.
They work better, and their resistance to different weather conditions is higher. Although frame brushes are cheaper, frameless brushes will last longer. They can operate efficiently from 1 to 1.5 million cycles.
When planning a replacement, you need to consider the size of the wiper blades. For the Lada Kalina, this is a 600 mm blade on the driver’s side of the windshield and a 400 mm blade on the front passenger side. On the rear window, the standard blade is 360 mm long. The rear wiper is replaced much less often than the front ones. They wear out much more slowly because they have to be turned on less often.
Classic type
This includes frame wipers, which can only be used in summer. Despite the simplicity of the design - it includes supports on hinges, curved rocker arms and rubber bands - this type cannot be used in cold weather, because the hinges fail too quickly. They used to be metal and would rust, but now they are being replaced by axles, bushings and joints made of plastic. However, this does not negate the above: the use of frame wipers in winter sharply reduces the service life of these elements; in addition, they cope with their task one hundred percent only in warm conditions.
Which wipers to choose for the summer primarily depends on the price. If you buy cheap ones, the rubber bands will not fit tightly to the glass, squeak and crunch. If you purchase more expensive products, these shortcomings do not exist, and they will last at least a year. This type of windshield wiper has a number of advantages:
good adaptation to different windshield configurations;
protection from dust and dirt provided by the presence of a protective casing;
good performance in cold weather without icing;
strength of the main structural elements.
The flip side of frame windshield wipers is the rapid wear of the rocker arms, which is why the cleaning rubber periodically loses its grip on the glass quite quickly. Accordingly, there are flaws in cleaning. Secondly, the appearance of these products leaves much to be desired, since they tend to rust prematurely. Finally, when we choose wipers for a classic car, we must be prepared for the fact that the mechanical hinges will wear out after just one season of use.
What to look for when choosing?
It is no secret that the level of visibility to the rear depends on the efficiency of the brush, which is especially important when maneuvering in cramped conditions and in bad weather. When choosing, you should lean toward high-quality branded products that will not subsequently emit an annoying squeak when rubbing against the glass and do not have to think about how to remove and replace the wiper. You should also inspect the integrity of the working element of the brush, which initially should not have cracks or breaks. An important role is played by the force with which the rear wiper is pressed to the surface of the glass, as well as the material from which the product is made.

Put a leash on the first viburnum) I calmly changed the frame ones to winter frame ones. I didn't even think it was a problem
I also struggled for a long time with removing the factory wiper. I couldn't get it off with a screwdriver. He freaked out and pulled it out with pliers and a hammer. Alka got up without any problems, cleans with a bang. So there is no need to change the leash.
Alka - you need to remember. Is this the brand of wipers?
An adapter from Alca fits.
The system is the same as on the classic. You did not completely remove the windshield wiper, but only the blade itself. The adapter also needs to be removed. Last summer I pulled it away from there and installed alca.
Oops, this is news. Thanks for the enlightenment. We will try. How to remove it? Do I need to pry it somewhere?
You can’t explain it on your fingers, look at how it’s done on the seven and you’ll understand everything right away)
There were no problems. O.o. I stopped by on the way to the auto shop and took the first one I came across (it came with a bunch of adapters) and it fit like a native
Do-it-yourself troubleshooting
When the drive works when the wipers are turned on, but the wipers do not move, repairing the trapezoid in such a situation will come down to replacing the bushings.
To do this, you need to remove the trapezoid, which is located under the plastic decorative trim under the windshield. Windshield wiper repairs are carried out in the following order:
- unscrew and remove the windshield wiper blades along with the leads;
- unscrew and remove the plastic cover, for which you will need a TORX T20, or “star”;
- unscrew the trapezoid, which is attached to the car body with a nut and two bolts;
- disconnect the windshield wiper drive from the battery;
- remove the trapeze together with the drive.
If you do not remove the trapezoid, then when installing the bushings you can bend the hinges, which will lead to improper operation of the wipers. Therefore, it is better to remove the entire trapezoid and replace it not with weight, but with emphasis.
The destroyed bushing is immediately visible. It can be simply removed using wire cutters. To insert a new one, it and the locking ring must be steamed in hot water, otherwise it will not be possible to put it all on the hinge. Before putting on the locking ring, the bushing should be treated with lubricant (for example, lithol). All disassembly and assembly work takes a maximum of 40 minutes.
But if the central bushing “flies”, then most likely the entire windshield wiper mechanism will have to be replaced. Replacing a windshield wiper trapezoid is an even simpler task than the process of removing and installing new bushings. All work is carried out according to the algorithm described above.
Naturally, a complete replacement of the windshield wiper trapezoid will cost more than repairing the windshield wiper. But it will be more reliable. New ones are almost guaranteed to last longer than refurbished ones. Although some Lada owners claim that a rebuilt and repaired Kalina wiper trapezoid can easily last two years. Well, you should always base it on whether you are willing to spend time or money.

- Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery, disconnect the connector and the trapezoid with the wiper motor.

The windshield wiper cleans the glass by supplying water from the windshield washer reservoir.

Methods for attaching brushes
Before 1999, most car manufacturers used a type of mounting for OEM windshield wiper blades called a "hook" or "hook". This is a universal device in the shape of the letter “U”, which allows you to snap the brush into place and not worry about the reliability of its installation. The following types of mounts are currently gaining popularity:
- Side pin - appeared in 2005 on BWM, Volvo and other cars. Allows brushes to be fixed using a special 22 or 17 mm side pin.
- Button or “Push Button” is an adapter for standard 16 mm wide wiper blades. It is enough to snap the device into place for fastening, and to remove it you need to press a special button.
- Pin lock - fixation of brushes using a special built-in lock. Used in Audi cars.
“Push Button” mounting scheme
This is not a complete list of types of fastenings. Each manufacturer can use their own designs for fixing brushes.
Despite the relative simplicity of windshield wipers, it is difficult to imagine a modern car without them. Drivers can control the operation of the wipers directly from the cabin, remove dirt and improve visibility of the road situation. And electronic systems automatically monitor the cleanliness of the glass, increasing the comfort and safety of driving without human intervention.
Original sizes of brushes on Grant
The length of the driver's windshield wiper is 600 mm. The length of the passenger wiper is 410 mm. Fastening type - “hook” (in English hook).
Foreign manufacturers indicate the length of the windshield wiper in inches, so the suitable length for a passenger blade is 16″. Sixteen inches - 406 mm, probably because of this, brushes with lengths of both 40 and 41 cm can be installed on the right side of the Granta. If desired, you can install a passenger windshield wiper up to 45 cm, but I would recommend staying in the range of 400...410 mm.
I have added brush article numbers to the selection: they will help you find specific products in stores that sell auto parts (this is faster and, most likely, cheaper). Also, the articles will allow you to avoid compromises in the form of several centimeters in the length of the brushes - choose only what is made specifically for your car.

How to choose a wiper for your car
If it was decided to completely replace the brushes, then you need to choose the right wipers for the car. It is better to do this by comparing the ones you select with the old ones removed from the car. When selecting, it is better to focus on certain rules:
Mounting type. Some car windshield wipers from the same manufacturer may have different ways of securing the arm. In order not to make a mistake in choosing, it is better to compare the type of fastening with the old brush. If the choice fell on windshield wipers whose mount does not fit the leash, you can additionally purchase an adapter for them. Length
It is also important to select windshield wipers based on the length of the vehicle. The maximum deviation of the length of the brushes can be 1.5-2.0 cm, but no more
Again, when selecting, it is better to choose a wiper after comparing it with the one removed from the car. View of a janitor. Here the selection is already carried out according to preference. You can buy inexpensive frame ones or spend more on purchasing frameless or hybrid ones. Manufacturing company. When purchasing cheap windshield wipers made in China, you cannot count on durable and high-quality cleaning work. There are many companies engaged in the production of high-quality wipers. Moreover, the same model can be produced with different adapters for certain car brands. Here are just some of the best manufacturers of windshield wipers for cars - Bosh, Denso, SWF, Valeo.
Having made the correct selection of car wipers, all that remains is to install them on the car by putting them on a leash until the latch is activated.
Why wipers don't work on Kalina
The Kalina car is available in three body types. If "Kalina" has a sedan body. then the wipers are only on the windshield. and on hatchbacks and station wagons. The second wiper is located on the rear windshield.
There is a wiper mode switch on the steering column, which also works with the windshield washer. To the left of the steering column, there is a mounting block, there is a 20 amp fuse F4. protecting the electrical circuit of the wipers from overloads and a relay that allows operation in intermittent mode. The electric motor with gearbox and brush movement mechanism are located in front of the windshield.
If, when you turn on the windshield wiper, you do not hear the noise of the engine running, you will first have to check fuse F4. You can get it out using gray tweezers located in the cell on the far right of the mounting block. Having taken out the fuse, we look through the window where the thread should be. If it is empty, then it is burned out, but there are times when the thread burns out in the body itself, and then it will seem to you that it is intact. If there are such suspicions, it can be checked with a test lamp. Before replacing a fuse, it is necessary to find the cause of its failure. You also need to check the fastening of the ground terminal; it is located on the car body near its left pillar.
If the electric motor still does not work, you will have to check whether voltage is supplied to it. This can be done using a warning lamp with the ignition on and the wiper mode switch. There are two options here. First, there is power, which means you need to look for the cause in the electric motor itself. Its brushes may freeze or the armature winding may burn out. Second option, there is no power. Then you will have to disassemble the steering switch and check the condition of the pads for oxidation of the contacts.
If the windshield wipers do not work intermittently. you need to check the K6 relay located in the mounting block. The easiest way to do this is to replace it with a known good one. When the wiper motor is running, but the brushes are not moving, the cause may be loose fastenings of the nuts of the drive mechanism or shearing of the gear teeth in the gearbox.
If your brush speed has decreased, you will have to disassemble the gearbox. since rust appeared on its axle due to lack of lubrication.
The device of a windshield wiper is not so complicated and almost any driver who understands technology can fix malfunctions that may arise during its operation.
What are the causes of breakdowns?
The most likely factor causing the wipers to stop is the blown working element in the fuse. Eliminating this malfunction involves performing the simplest action - replacing the fuse link. It is located in the corresponding mounting block, located on the left side of the steering column. It will be useful to stock up on a fuse diagram, which will help you easily find the insert we need.
When the purifiers stopped functioning intermittently, the control relay most likely became unusable. This component is also located in the previously designated block. When a relay fails, it is replaced with a new analogue. However, we note that according to numerous reviews from owners of domestic small cars, certain statistics have been formed indicating the small number of cases of breakdowns of this kind.
The most common cause is the destruction of bushings. They are made of plastic, so they do not boast a long service life, which reaches a maximum of three years. The process of destruction of elements is primarily influenced by the quality indicator of the material. Here, the only effective measure is replacement, and to carry it out you should acquire a repair kit, which is available at a specialized retailer. In this case, the trapezoid is replaced.
If the owner of a Lada Kalina discovers that the wiper drive is not working, this indicates that the unit’s motor has failed. In order to verify this fact, you will need to make sure that voltage is supplied to the motor contacts from the on-board network. This procedure is easily performed using a regular tester. If there is power, then we definitely change the motor.
Modernization of wiper arms for Lada Kalina 2
It is not always possible to buy a wiper arm for the first Kalina; in this case, the design can be modified. It is necessary to remove the leash and tension spring. Then drill a new hole in the metal bar of the lever closer to the brush. We install the spring using a screwdriver, clinging it to the new hole. Now the tension will be stronger, which will allow the rear wiper to clean the glass better.

By the way, another way to solve the problem of poor cleaning of the rear window is to install a frameless wiper. Let us remind you that the front wiper blades can be installed in larger sizes.
For Lada Granta, Kalina, Priora
The resistor shown in the photo is responsible for the number of strokes. Our task is to replace (using a soldering iron) it with a resistor with lower resistance. To get two sweeps of the wipers after washing the windshield, it is enough to solder a resistor with a resistance of 47 to 68 kOhm (0.25 W). To make three swings - from 70 kOhm. The result of the modernization on video:
It is worth noting that on sale you can find a wiper relay with advanced capabilities:
- There is a pause adjustment, that is, you can set any time between sweeps of the wipers;
- Three strokes after the washer, instead of four (there is no problem with the wipers squeaking on the glass);
- After the washer, the first stroke is delayed.
However, replacing a resistor in a relay yourself will cost only 5 rubles, and a functional relay will be 70-100 times more expensive.
