Using a “13” wrench or a socket of a similar size, unscrew the clamp securing the rear part of the exhaust tract.

We remove the muffler from the rubber hangers and mark the places for installing a new corrugation. The old corrugation will have to be cut off.

We weld a new corrugation. Pay special attention to the weld, because if there are holes in it, the exhaust system will begin to “sniff” and will soon burn out at the location of the hole. To reliably protect the weld, paint it with a heat-resistant primer and cover it with a similar sealant that is resistant to high temperatures.

Reinstall the exhaust tract and install a new gasket. Replacing the corrugation is a guaranteed way to get rid of exhaust noise, but it is also the most expensive and labor-intensive method.

The next method in terms of cost and time is to tie the standard corrugation with steel clamps. Purchase two or three screw clamps measuring 60*80 and install them according to the attached photo.

The exhaust system consists of an exhaust manifold integral with the catalytic converter (catalytic converter), additional and main mufflers and pipes connecting them.

A control sensor for oxygen concentration in the exhaust gases (lambda probe) is installed in the upper part of the catalytic converter (before the converter). A metal multilayer heat-resistant gasket with a sealing coating (common for the catalytic collector and intake pipe) is installed between the catalytic collector and the cylinder head.

For normal operation of the converter, the composition of the exhaust gases (in particular, the oxygen content in them) must be within strictly specified limits. This function is performed by the electronic engine control unit (controller), changing the amount of fuel supplied depending on the readings of the oxygen concentration sensors. The cause of failure of the converter may be interruptions in the ignition system: unburned fuel burns out in the converter, damaging the pores of the converter. A bellows-type metal compensator allows the power unit to oscillate on rubber-metal supports without transmitting these vibrations to the exhaust gas system.

Between the rear part of the additional muffler pipe and the front part of the main muffler pipe there is a metal ring with two spherical outer surfaces, which makes it possible to compensate for errors in the manufacture of parts. The inner surface of the flanges is also spherical, the flanges themselves are tightened with a clamp.

What to consider when replacing the resonator

When replacing, you need to consider what you want to get as a result. You can install a 2190 resonator, which is installed on Grants at the factory, but it is not a fact that this will solve your problem for a long time.

Many owners do just this, but even when replacing, it is worth paying attention to the condition of the entire gas exhaust system of the car, the condition of its other components: the manifold, the gas receiver pipe, the gas extinguishing catalyst and the corrugated pipe.

It may be necessary to change the entire system, or some additional components. But the whole problem is that after driving another 5-10 thousand, it is possible that you will return to the starting position - the resonator on the Grant rattles.

Which is better 2190 or StinGer?

What is best is up to you to decide. You need to take into account your needs and requirements for the car. The resonator of the Lada Grant, if it has been replaced with high quality, performs well in operation. This is exactly what the manufacturer wanted to give you, this is his idea. If you want to get a good exhaust sound, you can install a stinger. Often a Grant Sport resonator is replaced with a stinger. This type of tuning makes the car more sporty. Replacing the resonator

Replacing the muffler on a Lada Granta with your own hands

Replacing rubber cushions of the exhaust system on a Lada Granta

3. Move the muffler slightly upward and remove it from the rear rubber cushion. Then we remove it from the front suspension.

4. Remove the main muffler.

Installation is performed in reverse order. To make installation easier, rubber hangers are generously moistened with soapy water.

Removing an additional muffler with your own hands

To complete the work we will need: two 13mm spanners and a screwdriver with a straight blade. First of all, we need to separate the pipes of the main and additional mufflers. For this:

1. Using spanner wrenches, unscrew the nuts of the two bolts, through which the fastening clamp securing the pipes of the additional main mufflers is tightened. An important point: we do not completely unscrew the nut of one of the bolts.

2. We take out the bolt, the nut of which we completely unscrewed and removed. Next, remove the clamp.

3. Carefully separate the pipes. We take out the sealing ring. We inspect it for severe abrasions and damage. In case of severe wear, the metal-graphite ring must be replaced.

4. Using a flat-head screwdriver, bend the locking tabs of the mounting plate.

5. Use wrenches to unscrew the nuts that secure the collector flange to the additional muffler pipe. Remove the locking plate.

6. Lift the additional muffler and carefully remove its bracket from behind the rubber suspension. Remove the sealing gasket.

7. Hold the muffler and remove it from the rear rubber cushion. We remove the additional muffler from the car.

8. Install the new spare part in the reverse order.

I removed the resonator and welded in a normal corrugation instead of the factory one. It will be inconvenient to weld in place, so it is better to remove the resonator. Some craftsmen say that you can carefully cut it with a grinder and weld it in place. But I advise you to take it off anyway.

The mounting bolts on this machine are already different, so they came off easily. Moreover, our Lada Granta has a low mileage.

When you install a new gasket, you need to pull it through 2 times. After the first time, given that there is no flame arrester, the gasket will burn out and cut. Therefore, you need to re-stretch it. This is the only disadvantage when removing the resonator.

I decided to weld a 3-layer corrugation with internal reinforcement, size 150x45.

It is approximately the same size, but if necessary, you can trim it with a grinder. It can be seen that the layers of the mesh are made denser compared to the factory one.

How to weld correctly

First you need to weld 1 end, which goes to the manifold (spider). Then hang the pipe in place to weld it evenly.

Now let’s fix the resonator, fix it by welding so that everything is smooth. Then scald as needed. We boiled the corrugation, this is how it looks when welded.

Looks like a factory one. I hope that after checking all the vibrations and squeaks will disappear.

Do not forget that after installing the spider or flame arrester, you need to tighten the exhaust pipe fastening 2 times. The second time is better to delay the next day.

Muffler replacement process

It is necessary to prepare the car for work, for this we select a flat area, and then simply put the handbrake on and engage first gear. The procedure for carrying out operations when removing the muffler on Grant:

1. Using a mechanic's tool, remove the tightening clamp located between the muffler and the resonator. To remove the clamp, you need to have two “13” wrenches in stock; for convenience, we use a head with a wrench and a “13” socket-type wrench. It should be noted that the muffler fasteners are located in a zone of thermally unstable temperatures; they are periodically subject to heating and cooling. Therefore, unscrewing such fasteners can sometimes be quite a difficult undertaking.
2. After releasing the clamp from the two fasteners, it is necessary to move the Lada Granta muffler in the direction of the exhaust gas outlet, having previously tapped the bend of the product with a plumber's hammer.
3. Next, we unfasten the muffler one by one from the rubber hangers with which it is attracted and fixed to the bottom of the car.
4. We remove the muffler from the car and put it to the side, because it is necessary to install a new damper.
