Priora 16 valve cooling fan with air conditioning does not work reasons

Where is it located?

The fan is located on the inside of the radiator between the engine and radiator. Bolted to the radiator housing. In luxury versions of the Lada Priora, a dual cooling radiator is installed, one for the engine cooling system, and the other for the car's air conditioning system. It should be noted that when the car reaches a critical temperature, these radiators begin to work in pairs and cool the engine more intensively.

Problems with the damper gear motor or fan motor

A common malfunction on a Lada Priora car is that the heater does not work. No air blowing at all.

First, you should make sure that the heater motor is working - at least cold air should be blowing from the deflectors. If not, then you need to check the integrity of fuse F9.

If it is intact, it means the stove fan is not working. "Priora" is equipped with a "ten" fan. Therefore, removing it exactly repeats the procedure on the “ten”. In some cases, the fan does not spin because leaves or other foreign objects have gotten between the impeller and its housing, which can block rotation. In this case, you can hear a characteristic hum.

Protection system

Since the fan is an electrical part, it must have some kind of protection against short circuits or overheating. To provide this protection, it uses a relay and a fuse, which quite often fail, resulting in the fan not working.

Priora cooling fan fuse

To protect the circuit from short circuits and overloads, a fuse is used, which breaks the circuit when it overheats or a short circuit occurs in it.

The Priora uses several fuses to protect the cooling fan circuit: power and control. The cooling fan power fuse is located under the hood in a block near the battery number F3 at 60A. The control circuit fuse is located in the fuse box under the steering column and is numbered F1 at 25A.

Priora cooling fan relay

The location of the relay depends on the vehicle configuration.

In the “NORM” configuration, the fan relay is located on the main fuse block under the steering column and has the number K1.

In the “NORM+” and “LUX” configurations, the relays are located in the engine compartment and there are 2 of them. For the right fan, relay number 3, for the left fan, relay number 5.

Priora cooling fan sensor

The cooling fan on the Priora turns on automatically when a certain temperature is reached. The coolant temperature is determined by a special sensor installed in the thermostat housing, which sends signals to the ECU when the engine temperature reaches a high temperature, after which the cooling fan turns on and begins to create an artificial air flow through the radiator.

The sensor is a simple part inside which houses a thermistor. As the temperature changes, it changes its resistance.

Modernization

If you want to improve the operation of your radiator fan on the VAZ 2109, we offer the appropriate instructions.

To upgrade, you will need to install a second sensor and modify the system somewhat.

  1. The standard power sensor will be responsible for the operation of the fan at maximum speed.
  2. An additional sensor will include a reduced speed. It is installed at the top of the cooling system.

Now let’s talk more specifically about how to organize all this.

  1. Take a temperature sensor whose response temperature is similar to the standard regulator.
  2. Install it in the upper pipe fitting to the radiator.
  3. To mount the element, you will need a pair of washers and a nut. Be sure to lubricate the washer with sealant to prevent leakage from the installation hole.
  4. Buy a resistor to install on the stove fan. It has several outputs, so if desired, you can make several operating speeds.
  5. It is necessary to make an additional control circuit. Through it, less voltage will be supplied to the motor winding.
  6. The temperature sensor located in the upper part of the cooling system is responsible for turning it on.
  7. It is better to do control not by plus, but by weight.
  8. The system will work through a button in the cabin. To the left of the dashboard there is a grille with two plugs. Cut out one of them and set it to turn off on two modes. You can take the heater switch from a VAZ 2107.
  9. In the first position the low frequency will be switched on, and in the second – the maximum speed.
  10. One common wire is fed to the minus.

Such modernization is not provided for by the design of the VAZ 2109. These are modifications made by car enthusiasts. Therefore, installing a second sensor is entirely your personal responsibility.

The fan is an important component of the cooling system of VAZ 2109 injection and carburetor engines. If you wish and have time, you can easily replace or repair it yourself.

For owners of classic cars it becomes one of the important problems. In addition to various nuances that lead to overheating, a non-working radiator fan

almost always, on a hot day, it causes boiling. Why it may not turn on and how to find the reason, you can learn more about this in this publication.

The cooling fan of the Priora with air conditioning does not turn on

Modern domestically produced cars are equipped with various controllers and sensors that ensure full operation of the car. If one of the devices fails, this can lead to incorrect operation of the nodes. From this material you can find out what the Priora and Kalina fan switch is and what malfunctions are typical for it.

Priora knock sensor

A knock sensor is a device that detects the knock levels of internal combustion engine processes. The installation location of such a device is the cylinder block. Maintaining it makes it possible to obtain high power, as well as achieve good fuel economy without causing damage to the engine.

The detonation process is the main defect of an internal combustion engine, since the force is considerable and it is impossible to ignore it. Among several different devices that are used as performance optimizations, the knock sensor is used to prevent knocking fuel combustions. Fuel detonation can be controlled thanks to the main indicator - the manifestation of high-pitched and ringing metallic sounds, which, according to indicators, are sometimes mistaken for the clicking sounds of the cylinder-piston group. If the process is strong enough, with faulty knock prevention systems the engine begins to fail.

Description

As you know, any Priora and Kalina have a cooling system that ensures normal engine operation and helps prevent overheating. One of the devices that allows you to cool the power unit is a fan sensor, upon the signal of which the ventilation device should turn on. On Kalina, this controller is designed to activate the fan when the engine temperature reaches a certain point. Thanks to the fan, which must turn on based on a signal from the controller, the engine temperature will always be normal and will not exceed the permissible threshold. If the device does not work, the fan will not turn on, and the engine may overheat.

Engine overheating on a Lada Priora VAZ 2170

When the engine is running on a Lada Priora VAZ 2170, a working cooling system maintains optimal temperature conditions. Malfunctions in the cooling system can lead to engine overheating. If you miss this moment, unpleasant consequences may arise: breakdown of the head gasket, warping of the head and, as a result, complex and expensive engine repairs.

The instrument panel of any car has a coolant temperature indicator. If the engine overheats, the gauge needle approaches the red zone.

Checking the cooling system

At the first signs of engine overheating, if the temperature gauge needle has gone into the red zone, but no clouds of steam are escaping from under the hood, turn on the maximum mode for heating the cabin (see “Heating and ventilation of the cabin”). This is necessary in order to reduce the temperature of the coolant in the engine cooling system. Turn on the hazard lights, depress the clutch pedal and, using the inertia of the car, try to carefully move to the edge of the roadway and stop as far to the right as possible on the side of the road, and if possible, outside the roadway. Let the engine run for a couple of minutes at normal idle speed with the interior heater turned on at full power.

WARNING Do not stop the engine immediately! The only condition is to maintain the tightness of the cooling system. If a pipe bursts or jumps off, or another leakage point forms other than coolant escaping from under the expansion tank cap, the engine will have to be stopped immediately!

After stopping the overheated engine, local overheating of the coolant begins at the points of contact with the most heat-stressed engine parts and the formation of vapor locks. This phenomenon is called heat stroke. 1. Turn off the engine of the Lada Priora VAZ 2170. 2. Open the hood and inspect the engine compartment (Fig. 3.2). Determine where the steam is coming from. When inspecting the engine, pay attention to the presence of coolant in the expansion tank, the integrity of the rubber pipes, radiator, and thermostat.

WARNING Never open the expansion tank cap immediately. The coolant in the car's cooling system is under pressure; when you open the expansion tank cap, the pressure will drop sharply, the liquid will boil and its splashes can scald you. If you want to open the expansion tank cap on a hot engine, first place a thick thick rag on top and only then carefully unscrew the cap.

HELPFUL TIP If coolant leaks are detected, the burst pipe can be temporarily repaired using adhesive tape. Reinforced (usually silver-colored) adhesive tape, which can be purchased at auto stores, is especially suitable for this purpose.

A leak in the radiator, thermostat or interior heater is quite difficult to eliminate on site, so in such a situation it is necessary to add water to the cooling system and carefully monitor the temperature gauge while driving, periodically restoring the level in the cooling system.

The main reasons for sensor malfunctions

So, for what reasons on Kalinas and Prioras, and on all VAZs in principle, the controller may not work:

  1. The first reason is the thermostat not working. This problem is one of the most difficult; when it occurs, the fan will not work correctly. To make sure that the thermostat is working, you will need to touch the lower hose - if it is cold, then the device has really failed. In general, for Kalina, thermostat failure is a fairly common occurrence.
  2. If the thermostat is working, then it is necessary to diagnose the safety elements. You should also check the condition of the circuits themselves; use a multimeter to do this. The fuse diagram should be indicated on the back of the unit cover. In the case of Kalina, the unit is located under the dashboard, you are interested in fuse element 3, its capacity is 50 amperes. If the fuse is working, then you need to diagnose the fan relay, it is marked with the number 1. If these elements are working, you will have to remove the fan control unit - to do this, move the air duct and, using a 10-mm wrench, unscrew its fastening. There should be two relays on the block, they should be checked.
  3. It would also be a good idea to climb into the engine compartment and ring the contacts of the fan itself. The problem may be a break, broken wiring, oxidation of contacts, or a burnt-out winding inside the device. Problems with wires and contacts are solved without problems - bad wiring is replaced, and contacts are cleaned. But if the problem lies in the winding, then the device will have to be completely changed.
  4. The problem may also lie directly in the sensor itself. To start the ventilating unit, you will need to reset the terminals from the device. Diagnosis of the controller is carried out by dismantling the thermostat and placing it in a container with hot water - the thermostat should open at this moment.
  5. Another reason, which happens quite rarely, is a break in the circuit. This problem can be diagnosed using a multimeter - broken wires must be replaced (the author of the video about diagnosing the regulator with your own hands is Dmitry Maznitsyn).

Connector to Panasonic heater fan (2 terminals) for VAZ Kalina, Priora

The VAZ heater fan is most often replaced by the following terms: heating motor, stove fan. Therefore, if you hear these terms, then know that we are talking about the same thing. Different names of this node have equal rights to use.

The VAZ 2170 car is equipped with an electric heater fan motor excited by permanent magnets. To obtain different rotation speeds, an additional resistor is installed in the power supply circuit of the electric motor. It includes three coils and a fuse. When current passes through all three spirals, the 1st speed of rotation of the heater fan is ensured, through two spirals - the 2nd speed, through one - the 3rd speed. When the electric motor is turned on without an additional resistor, the fan motor armature rotates at a maximum 4th speed.

Connecting block 2170 - 8127200-01АХ with 2 contacts assembled with female wires, is one of the elements of the control system harness, connected to the electric heater fan with the Panasonic climate system on cars of the Lada Priora family since 2007, Lada Kalina since 2008. and their modifications. Can be used to make your own cable. The contacts are already crimped onto the wires (wire length 100 mm) and inserted into the connector according to the pinout, so they can be installed on the car.

The electric motor cannot be repaired (except for cleaning the commutator); if it fails, it should be replaced as an assembly with the fan wheel.

Structurally, the heater fan is an electric motor on which the fan is mounted (with an impeller on a bearing), designed for use in a car heater system with an on-board voltage of 12 V, to pump hot air.

On Lada Priora and Lada Kalina cars, various air conditioners are installed - Korean-made and Panasonic - made in Taiwan.

Visually, which air conditioner is installed can be determined by the button in the middle of the central air conditioner control knob. The Panasonic air conditioning control knob has a power button in the middle with a windshield blower design.

The VAZ 21126 heater radiator is made of: tubular-tape, non-assembled (brazed), aluminum. The corrugated aluminum tape in such a radiator is located between aluminum flat-oval tubes. The tanks of this radiator can be made of either plastic or metal.

The design of non-assembled (brazed) aluminum devices is the most universal, allowing the creation of heat exchangers with any specified characteristics. Aluminum stove radiators are light in weight and relatively high rigidity, as well as at optimal prices.

Replacement of contact carrier 2170 - 8127200-01AX with 2 contacts assembled with female wires, which is an element of the under-panel harness connecting the heater motor (electric fan) with the Panasonic climate system on cars of the Lada Priora family since 2007, Lada Kalina since 2008. and their modifications can be carried out independently, without contacting specialized maintenance services.

Video “How to properly replace the thermostat on a Lada Kalina?”

If the problem of a non-functioning sensor in a Lada Kalina car lies in the failure of the thermostat, then this unit will also need to be replaced; detailed instructions for replacing it at home are presented below (the author of the video is Alexey Golubkov).

The cooling fan on Lada Priora is the most important element of the system for maintaining the operating temperature of the car engine. It provides rapid cooling of the radiator, which cools the coolant in the system. The temperature sensor activates the device. When the desired temperature is reached, the sensor sends a signal to the ECU, which activates the fan until the temperature in the system drops to the operating temperature. Quite often, an element of the cooling system fails for one reason or another, which negatively affects the engine.

If the cooling fan on a LADA Priora fails, this can cause serious damage to the car’s engine and urgent measures must be taken. Initially, it is worth studying the main causes of this malfunction and taking a number of measures to eliminate them.

Replacing the engine or coolant temperature sensor

On modern cars, and Priora is no exception, you can find two temperature sensors under the hood. Below we will consider the purpose of each of them:

  1. The first one is screwed into the cylinder head - acts as a pointer that transmits data to the arrow in the instrument panel
  2. The second is located in the thermostat housing - it has a more important role, it transmits signals to the ECU to turn on the fan, and also plays an important role in forming the fuel mixture during engine starting. Difficulty starting in cold weather or uncertain starting of a warm engine may be due to the failure of this sensor.

This article will discuss the second option, since it plays a more important role in the electronic engine control system. In order to carry out this repair of the Priora, you will need to use the following tool:

  • The head is 19 mm deep
  • Extension
  • Ratchet handle
  • Phillips screwdriver

Instructions for replacing the engine temperature sensor (coolant) on a Priora

It’s worth noting right away that Priora comes with both an 8- and 16-valve engine, so many may think that the repair procedure will be different because of this. But in reality, everything will be 99% the same. The thermostat housing is also accessible on both the one and the other motor, so getting to it is not difficult.

Perhaps it is better to first remove the pipe connecting the air filter and the throttle assembly.

We disconnect the chip (connector) from the temperature sensor, as shown in the photo below, after first releasing the latch.

Now we take the head with an extension and a knob, and with its help we unscrew the sensor, which is demonstrated more clearly in the photo below:

When it turns easily, you can finally turn it out by hand.

When installing a new temperature sensor on a Priora, you need to use a special thread lock, which is clearly visible in the top picture - dark gray.

A new engine temperature sensor can be purchased at a price of 200 to 300 rubles. The cost depends on the manufacturer of the part.

Causes of cooling fan breakdowns on Lada Priora

In order to diagnose the above problems, we do not need special skills or professional tools. You can test all these procedures in the garage or on the street. The main thing is to know where to look and what to do. There are two fairly common faults:

  • the cooling fan of the priors does not turn on at the required moment;
  • the device constantly works, despite the low heating of the internal combustion engine.

In the first case, it is obvious that the reason is a breakdown of the device itself, or a failure of a fuse or relay. In the second case, most likely the temperature sensor is faulty.

Troubleshooting and Troubleshooting

The main reasons for fan failure are:

  • Failure of the cooling fan relay. This problem is diagnosed by simply replacing a potentially faulty part with a working one.
  • Problems with the electric motor itself. If it malfunctions, the rotor stops rotating the impeller. The functionality of the node can be easily checked. Connect the fan directly to the battery. If the blades do not spin, then the element must be replaced or repaired. To carry out technical work and detailed diagnostics of the electric motor, use the diagram.
  • Temperature sensor. If the fan does not turn on when the engine temperature is 90% or more, then most likely the problem is there. The malfunction is determined as follows: disconnect the two contact wires from the sensor and connect them together. If the electric drive starts to spin up, this indicates that the sensor has failed.
  • Damage or break in the circuit. In this case, we are talking about a banal wiring break, lack of ground. It is recommended to use a multimeter for diagnostics.
  • Malfunction related to the operation of the thermostat. The cooling fan on the Priora does not turn on at temperatures of 110, 115, 120 degrees? It is worth taking measures that would not be difficult to do in a garage environment. Although this can be done right on the street...

Factory setting of fan temperature

The switch-on temperature depends on which ECU is installed and what settings are used in it. In stock, the first fan should turn on at 97 degrees, the second at 104 degrees.

A little more and the fan should turn on. Depends on the settings in the ECU.

You can change the switching parameters using an on-board computer, for example, BC STATE. We don’t have a BC, but we connected it specifically from another machine, and set the response temperature to 95 degrees. By the way, our editorial office has one of the very first Prioras. Here the factory temperature for turning on two fans at once is 104 degrees.

Optimal temperature

After turning off the fan, the temperature should be at this level. If this is not the case, then look at the thermostat; most likely it circulates the liquid in a small circle.

The optimal temperature for turning on the cooling fan depends on the operating conditions of the vehicle. If the main mileage is on the highway, then the factory settings (universal) will be optimal. If you live in a “warm city” and often get stuck in traffic jams, then it is better to lower the switching temperature. It's calmer this way.

An internal combustion engine is a complex mechanism, in order to ensure smooth operation of which a number of conditions must be met. And the temperature regime is no exception. For example, if the temperature is insufficient, this will negatively affect the quality of the formation of the fuel mixture in the cylinders. If, on the contrary, the heating is too strong, then the cylinder-piston group may jam, which in turn leads to the need for lengthy and expensive repairs.

Thus, the normal temperature (operating) for the Lada Priora engine is 85-90 degrees. When the temperature rises to 97-100 degrees, the fan should automatically turn on. If this does not happen, then the problem may lie both in the fan itself and in the sensor for its activation. But first of all, you should check the wire connections.

Gearmotor repair

In most cases, the extraneous sounds produced by the heater damper drive on a Priora are associated with cracking of the plastic gear. When its teeth are cut off, the mechanism stops working normally. Replacing it is quite difficult, but possible. After dismantling the gearbox, release the compressed plastic cover and bend it, then carefully remove it.

After carefully inspecting the mechanism, determine which gears are faulty and install new ones. Determine the condition of the commutator, bearings and brushes of the mechanism. Lubricate the bearings with silicone grease, which does not harm other structural elements. If after assembly the system functions normally, replacing the heater gear motor will not be necessary.

Purpose of the air recirculation system

How is the recirculation mode useful? Firstly, it ensures a much faster establishment of the optimal temperature inside the car, especially after the car has been parked for a long time. This is achieved due to the fact that the intake of external air stops. Consequently, only the air that circulates through the heating or air conditioning system is involved in the blowing process.

Secondly, if it is necessary to cool the cabin in the hot season, the energy consumption for operating the evaporator in recirculation mode becomes half as much as when using the oncoming external flow.

Thirdly, the mode for blocking the air intake from outside is very useful in cases where conditions outside are far from ideal in terms of the presence of various contaminants and unpleasant odors in the air. Such factors, for example, could be:

  • driving on country roads with no hard surface - on such roads in the summer there is a column of dust, and any oncoming car threatens to turn the air in the cabin, even with the windows completely closed, into a dense suspension that becomes impossible to breathe;
  • driving in a traffic jam, when the virtual absence of dynamics and dense traffic lead to multiple concentrations of exhaust gases that easily penetrate into the cabin;
  • driving past sources of unpleasant odors - for example, a cow barn, pig farm, poultry farm, landfill or industrial complex with specific odors;
  • movement in long tunnels in conditions of traffic jam speed, when stagnation phenomena greatly increase the concentration of exhaust;
  • if foul-smelling or polluted outside air has already leaked into the cabin, and it’s still a long way from leaving for a clean zone, turning on internal recirculation will also be useful - the bad air is usually cleared quite quickly.

New Lada: Lada Priora standard equipment (photos, features and options) » Lada.Online - all the most interesting and useful about LADA cars. Note that, despite such useful features of the Priora air recirculation mode, its use should not be long-term, since in this case there is no air exchange. This leads to a decrease in the amount of oxygen and a corresponding increase in the concentration of carbon dioxide. The latter, as is known, has a suffocating effect on the body, causing drowsiness in the driver and passengers. Therefore, long driving (more than 15 minutes) in this mode is not recommended, since it has a bad effect on people’s well-being.

The second negative point is that if you breathe the same air for a long time, it becomes saturated with moisture, which is abundantly present in a person’s exhalation. And if, in addition to the driver, there are also passengers in the car, an increase in air humidity leads to rapid fogging of the windows, which even the turned on air conditioner cannot cope with.

From a physics point of view, fogging is the result of exceeding the concentration of moisture in the air, the so-called “dew point,” especially in the area of the windshield, which always has a temperature lower than in the cabin. For this reason, climate systems in the “defrost” mode (defrosting the windows) automatically block the recirculation of cabin air.
